Passionate about Passionate DestinyReview Date: 2008-04-28
Passionate Destiny by Dee S. KnightReview Date: 2005-09-13
Dr. Margaret-Amis Hollings loses her job and decides to move to the historic mansion she recently inherited in Virginia. She's divorced and disillusioned that she'll never find real love. Soon after moving into the mansion, River Peace, she starts waking up with the sensation of having been passionately loved the way she'd always dreamed of. Except, she starts to wonder if she's just dreaming, it seems so real and sensual.
Margaret hires Aaron Belton to make needed repair to the mansion, who, unknown to Margaret, knows the place well and has his own plans to someday have River Peace, which he believes should have been rightfully owned by his ancestors.
An attraction and relationship starts to develop between Margaret and Aaron, reluctantly at first. Margaret finds herself confused about her feelings for the present-day Aaron, and her ghost lover, whose name also happens to be Aaron. The story develops with some twists and a mystery sub-plot, but the romance itself is what you'll remember after you've read it. I liked the little twist in the epilog, and hope it leads to a sequel!
Ms. Knight's writing immediately draws you into the tale, with a hero and heroine you can't help liking. The story is believable, despite the ghostly element. A keeper for me, and I hope to see more like this from her!

Honest and Deep Approach To YogaReview Date: 2003-12-19
It approaches yoga practice as a gateway to the internal, as a way of making a deeper connection with oneself and discovering themselves through the practice of yoga. This isn't a book on asana (postures) so if you are looking for that this book is not what you need, rather look into books such as Erich Shiffman's "Yoga The Spirit And Practice Of Moving Into Stillness" , Donna Farhi "Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit: A Return to Wholeness" which are both excellent books on learning Asana as well as the deeper aspects as well.
The author writes with openness about his own experiences, and does not try to come across as all wise and knowing, but rather someone who himself is very much "in process".
I highly recommend this as a book for those who are looking to take their practice of yoga beyond the physical.
Another book I would highly recommend is Stephen Cope's "Yoga and The Quest For The True Self" which also is focused on the internal aspects of yoga. This book actually goes (in my opinion) even deeper than the Phoenix Rising book in terms of covering the psychological aspects in a much more in depth way and it's just a wonderful companion to have to help you deepen your practice.
Also, check out "Bringing Yoga to Life : The Everyday Practice of Enlightened Living" by Donna Farhi which is also a book on the internal and life changing practices of yoga.
Still, that is to take nothing away from "Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy" which is definitely a book I would highly recommend to those looking to go further on their path.
Reviewed for Yoga Journal by Richard Miller, Ph.DReview Date: 2002-07-15
Michael Lee wrote his book on Phoenix Rising yoga Therapy (PRYT) from this perspective. We get to know Michael and his life first. As he describes his own psycho-spiritual journey, we tangibly feel how his approach to training teachers grew organically out of her personal life experiences. And as Michael tell his story, I see that he is also telling my story. It is not just about his journey in life and Yoga, it is also about my journey. This is also the story of how the PRYT training came to be, and thus if you are thinking of taking this training or are interest in following the story of a well-known Western yogi, I can recommend this unpretentious book.
I like that Michael acknowledges early on that each one of us is unique. We each follow a singular path to freedom, and we hold within ourselves the answers that guide us on our path. In turn, true teachers don't tell us what to do. They support us as we discover our own understanding. They help us accept ourselves as we are, so that we may listen deeply and uncover our own voice and song. Phoenix Rising, as envisioned by Michael, supports these views. It supports the therapist as guide, not as "one-who-knows-all."
Michael constantly reminds us that we need to keep out of our own way and the way of the student. Our mind is quick to give advice, but this instills an attitude that the therapist knows what is best for the client. Michael advises us to keep quiet and allow the client to come to his or her own knowing. While simple, this is perhaps the single most powerful message in the book - the attitude of listening, staying out of the way, witnessing, and being inwardly still, while at the same time being an actively engaged loving presence.
In Michael's words, "The more invisible and unobtrusive I am, the more clients feel they have permission to surrender to their body's innate wisdom. The process [of PRYT] unfolds naturally, guided by their inner being as I simply provide a space of acceptance and love, affirming all aspects of each person as the work of the Divine within."
At its core, PRYT is a practice that promotes transformation by drawing on the unique wisdom of the body. And as Michael affirms, "For empowerment and transformation to occur, the process must honor the spirit and stay out of its way. When this happens, Yoga is therapy."
Michael once told me that he was not trying to create a be-all-end-all training for Yoga teachers and therapists. He was interested in concentrating on a particular psycho-spiritual approach utilizing body and breath to enable students to get in touch with their core beliefs and emotions. Through PRYT he wanted to dig one well deeply, in one place. I'd say; he's struck a clear spring for refreshing water.

I should also add that this is the sort of work, short on words though not in meaning, that may appeal to documentary video afficianados rather than those looking for a purely textual approach.
I consider myself fortunate to have stumbled across this book and hope to find more like it.

RELAX--ENJOYReview Date: 2000-12-04
Some years ago I wrote to Mike about a hand that I was proud of the result, but my more traditional player/friends scorned my wizardly thinking. I held S-QJ10, H-XX-D-XX C-A10XXXX. Partner opened one heart. For various systemic reasons the bid 1NT was not available to me. I cleverly bid 1S; confusion reigned, and we received an excellent result--but my purist friends were horrified at my bid. Mike's response to my letter was "did you ever hear of the word 'pass'?" I loved it.
To serious and non-serious bridge players, get this book. It's a treat!

A must read for those who work!Review Date: 2005-03-17
It is loaded with simple and useable information to enhance your own daily production at work. This book will make life a whole lot easier for you if you read it. I found this book very useful, and I still use it today. I have read this book perhaps a dozen times since I first acquired a copy 15 years ago. The data in it is still useful today, as I found it back when I first read it. It is a very relevant book to our times, with the economic stuggles our country is experiencing across the nation. This is a very important book for the executive, the small business owner or the average employee. The chapter that covers the subject on 'Handling the Confusions of the workaday world' is particulary vital to anyone who strives to succeed. There is also a magnificent chapter entitled 'Exhaustion' which will lift the struggle of the 'daily grind' from anyone's job.
I highly recommend this book be obtained and read, as well as circulated among your fellow co-workers if you want a stable future where you are employed. It really works!

Too often people getting stressed out because of their jobs and work when it is not necessary. That was Chapter two. Then there is the Chapter Five "Life as a Game" - this is such a great point of view to run your Day to Day life, it takes the seriousness out of work and life! I love it! It greatly helped me change my attitude and enjoy daily life more.

A hilarious piece of crackpot garbageReview Date: 1998-07-20
It's about getting rid of impurities in your body. Short summary: sweat them out in a sauna for 8 hours a day, for a month, while exercising until exhaustion, and taking dangerous levels of Niacin.
L Ron Hubbard (who originally claimed to be a Nuclear Physicist on the cover of this book -- until people found out that he failed out of college) claims that radiation can be "washed off" buildings, and in the same way "washed out" of your body. Sure, radioactive DUST can be washed off buildings, but radiation is an ENERGY, not a SUBSTANCE, and when it affects your body, cells deep inside are changed and damaged -- you can't wash that off.
In successive years, Scientology has claimed that this prime example of Hubbard's "perfect" technology applies to LSD and psychiatric drugs, and that you can't reap Scientology's super-powerful benefits without gett! ing rid of these dangerous chemicals.
Uh huh.
There are plenty of web pages that go into great detail about Hubbard, Dianetics, Scientology, and various other trappings of this cult. Just search for "Scientology Criticism."

how labor markets really work!Review Date: 2002-11-14
Yet, those immediately around us may not be very useful in helping us find a job! Our close associates know what we know at the same time we know it! Therefore, they are not very useful for telling us something new -- like where a job opening is. To find out about jobs, we don't already know about, we need to go outside of our immediate social circle to connect to people we don't see very often any more[old friends, college chums, old army buddies, former co-workers, old sorority sisters]. They now live in different social circles than we do. These social circles have information not available in our social circle -- some of the info is about job openings.
This classic book is still highly relevant and useful after 30 years! The book is somewhat `academic' in parts, but is so full of `gems' that it is worth slogging through the research numbers. Every college graduate should read this book and keep it handy till they retire.

This book is a mix of academic and practical. I have recommended it to several clients and friends who don't mind the academic prose to find pearls of wisdom here. Very useful for people trying to understand how the knowledge-worker job-finding process works. Good for HR folks and those who have been RIFfed. A great supplemental book for an HR class in Talent Mgt.
The science of labor marketsReview Date: 2003-03-05
Through a very academic approach to the problem, the scientific approach is best to help us understand how people get jobs. I originally read this book as an undergraduate in a labor economics course, and I have recently consulted it again (10yrs later) and found many insights I had not caught the first time around.

Ohio Covered Bridges.Review Date: 2007-10-20
Beuatiful Scenery!Review Date: 2000-01-27
A Bridger's DreamReview Date: 2007-02-11
And they are well-groomed to pen this guide. Leib is a journalist and a frequent contributor to the regional cycling tabloid, Bike Midwest. Butterman is a historian. Both love cycling. And covered bridges.
The meat of the book is the very thorough description of 11 suggested tours that are charted within seven Ohio counties. The tours vary in length (24 miles is shortest, 60 miles is longest) and in degree of difficulty, so even a beginner teen or adult cyclist with a handful of 20-mile rides under the belt could find one to enjoy. On the flipside, there are some longer, more hilly, and downright tougher rides, many of which include gravel roads, a better fit for a mountain bike. Some include all paved roads but most have at least some stretches of dirt road, making a "hybrid," mountain bike, or road bike with wider tires the best fit.
At the beginning of each tour chapter, to the right of the book crease, the authors give a quick description of the terrain, road conditions, traffic level, and points of interest. Printed to the left of the crease is a simple map of the route, leaving out just enough details to keep the "lightweight" map readers from getting confused. This gives a quick synopsis of and look at the tour. What I thought was missing from this quick snapshot was a little, square map with a dot pinpointing the tour's location in the state. Instead, I had to flip back to the beginning of the book to find the one larger version of the Ohio map, which has the location of every tour in the book marked with numbered dots.
This missing, small map, however, was my only complaint. Following the one-sentence descriptions of terrain, traffic, etc., the authors provide an interesting, several-page read on each tour, covering the history of the area and of the specific covered bridges in the route. This was the most interesting part for this reviewer-HistoryChannel fanatic. Immediately following this text in each chapter is the all important route cue sheet. The sheets are very thorough and include: point to next point mileage, cumulative mileage, street (and route) name and important landmarks.
Each route is well-covered and quite detailed, but where the book really delivers for the connoisseur is in the Glossary and the Preface. The glossary provides simple diagrams and definitions of at least a dozen types of bridge designs, so amateur carpenters and would be engineers get a special treat. In the "Basic Data on Bridges" section of the glossary, the list includes each bridge in the book, its date of completion, its length and its "truss type" (explained earlier in the glossary). The preface gives the rationale for touring these bridges via bicycle and provides a short, interesting history of the emergence of the covered bridge, her rise to prominence, her gradual, nearly wholesale replacement by new structures, and her preservation and great admiration in recent decades.
The book is slim (107 pages), easy to pack, and specific information can be easily found within despite the absence of an index.
I have always lived within an hour of Ohio and I have been waiting for such a book for a long time. I love the subject and I love riding in Ohio. I've already picked out my first personal tour--Ashtabula County, Eastern Leg. This small book will "loom large" on my shelf of regional touring guides.
