Voith and MeReview Date: 2003-08-23
Adam Voith, like many good writers today, uses what he knows (music, college life, etc.) and mixes it in with fictional (or nonfictional) characters in made-up (or not) settings. The point is, Voith proves that writing doesn't have to work in a binary system where it's either fiction or nonfiction. Like Annie Dillard's books, it doesn't matter whether Bridges With Spirit is based on fact or not; these stories contain truth. You see it in the way Voith's characters love, hang out, and even die (see the brilliant "My Best Friend's Funeral," which has a word exchange too affecting to describe here). The author isn't afraid to experiment, and does it in a way that's not distracting and actually has a PURPOSE, such is the case of "Introduction: Mickey" (one of the best chapters in Bridges With Spirit).
The book's not without its glitches, though. There were several sections I shook my head and wondered on, such as the rather juvenile magnetic poetry and overly pretentious play/film/story combination chapter. Choice of font was a little wrong, too. The words are meant to be READ, not admired for their indie-look.
Other than the above complaints, Adam Voith's Bridges With Spirit is an excellence read for anyone looking for good literature these days in the vein of Salinger. Fans of independent music should buy this without hesiation.
Oh, and Voith's from Indiana, too, which is super cool.

Review printed in November 1998 issue of "Civil Engineering"Review Date: 1998-11-27
Bridging - discovering the beauty of bridges
This is a little book (235 x 187 x 13mm) in metric measurement, but it is a very big book when one considers the quality of its construction and the quality of its contents. Its stitched signatures contain 283 glossy full colour bridge photographs from 16 North American and European countries. The photographs selected for publication were of bridges constructed throughout the last 20 centuries, including 20 stone structures of Roman construction. The book consists primarily of photographs, with a brief introductory text for various book divisions, and brief and generally interesting photo captions. The book appears to be a labour of love for Mr Robert S. Cortright, a retired banker, and his patient and supportive wife Kathy who initially were
`enthusiastic tourists, thrilled with all of the sights encountered in travel. Gradually [their] focus of attention and the focus of the camera began to be concentrated upon bridges. Ultimately, that concentration escalated to the level of an obsession.'
This obsession, supported and guided by a perceptive eye and an intuitive appreciation for the conceptual genius and exceptional craftsmanship displayed by early bridge builders, and by the time, patience, and persistence to locate suitable perspectives, resulted in a portfolio of over 4,000 bridge photographs from 20 countries. Of these, nearly 300, considered by Robert Cortright to be his best, now grace the pages of this fine publication.
Unfortunately, the editors, in an apparent effort to achieve page format variety, an effort that has generally succeeded, spoiled a few of the larger photographs by superimposing caption text directly on the photographs. However, this one fault diminishes the overall quality of the book only slightly.
Bridging will make a suitable companion to Fritz Leonhardt's Bridges: aesthetics and design and to the Highway Agency's The appearance of bridges. It should be in the personal library of all bridge engineers, architects and other fine bridge enthusiasts. For those interested in this book, copies should be obtained as soon as possible, since the modest cover price of $29.95 suggests that its first edition may not be available for long. M. P. Burke
Perfect gift (especially for yourself)Review Date: 1999-07-15
I grew up with the Mississippi bridges of St. Louis and have lived for decades with the bridges of New York City -- so I feel that the photographer is a kindred spirit and made this book for me. Cortright awakens the eye and mind to the beauty of bridges -- from all angles and in all weathers. These are not promotional postcards, but lovingly composed and arranged photographs that give us not only the settings but the personalities of these bridges.
See the Civil Engineering review below for a fine appreciation of bridge builders' and Cortright's achievements -- technically and aesthetically. Better yet, take a look at the book.
Fascinating, eye-opening and a heck of a lot of funReview Date: 1998-10-28
Bridges are little pieces of land suspended over a precipice. Engineers have spent the last 3000 years trying to solve the problems of seemingly uncrossable rivers and chasms, and Cortright's photographic selection of bridges, spanning more than two millenia and 16 countries, traces the increasingly more sophisticated ways that builders have triumphed. Interestingly, many seemingly high-tech solutions go right back to the very first arches and cantilevers. Others seem totally out of this world.
You'll learn alot about the different kinds of bridges and their basic principles, but more than that, this book is downright entertaining. Cortright appears to be one part expert photographer and one part eccentric, and his gorgeous photographs are grouped by in ways that tickle one's fancy rather than in a dry, dusty textbook manner. Categories include Stone Bridges, Wooden Bridges, Bridges of Iron and Steel, Bridges that Move, bridges that people live on, Aqueducts and much more. It even has a photo of a bridge with a giant troll living under it (I kid you not). The final chapter entitled "The Little Woman" is sure to catch you by surprise, and best sums up the quirky charm that enlivens this book.
Long on great photos with just the right amount of text to help you appreciate them, this book is great for an eight year-old or for a highway engineer.
Highly highly recommended.

An "average player's" reactionReview Date: 2005-09-09
I believe that this is an excellent book for its target audience. But, most novices are probably not ready to make much use of it.
The introduction says that it is for "experienced bridge players." I would interpret that as meaning those who have completed a series of beginning classes (perhaps based on the Audrey Grant - ACBL - series) and have played at least a year.
The book is well written. (An enhanced discussion of what Lawrence terms "shell points" would have been helpful to me.)
It helped me to understand in a more profound way how both "shape" and competitive auctions affect hand evaluation.
I think that this is a very insightful book, which I will read and re-read several times.

Hand Evaluation - just like the title saysReview Date: 2007-02-15
The books has many bidding sequences where your hand fluctuates in value.
A singleton in your partners first bid suit is not necessarily an asset as their suit is hard to set up and secondary honors are worthless.
Axx gives you control as to when to take the ace - 1st 2nd or 3rd round. COmpared to a stiff ace.
You need some practical experience to get something out of the book. Read some books, play for a year, THEN read this. This is beyond counting HCP
No ZAR points or silver bullets, just how to dynamically value your hand.

Reactive mind knowledge a key to successReview Date: 2005-02-02
Since learning about the reactive mind, I can see it instantly in others, and myself. When people get angry, and spew from their mouth things they can't even remember afterwards because it is a 'tape from their mind' from a similar situation that invoked it, this was brilliant. I now watch myself, and correct it much quicker than ever before, and as a result has given me a more peaceful existence. I ran the drills with my husband, and I totally got how it worked, and a major win. We couldn't believe how easy it was to follow the steps, and actually help yourself and others to detect issues, and clear them.
If you want an easy to follow guide that you and a friend or loved one can do to help each other get stronger, healthier, and become a better person, it will be the best money you have ever spent.
Enjoy the journey, I know I am now.

A REAL book by a REAL photographerReview Date: 2008-02-01
The first thing that stands out about this book is that it has STYLE. Style would seem out of place in a book that is a collection of somewhat unrelated subjects (since it was derived from over five years of monthly columns in Photoshop User magazine), but each chapter has depth and realism. Kevin lets us in on his real world experiences. He is not holding back. He makes a complete story out of each chapter and the photos are from his real experiences. It is something anyone can relate to. The photos mean something. They are real. In most books on photography, and especially Photoshop, the photos used in examples are just that -- they are taken out of context -- like stock. Kevin's models have names because they are real people.
But wait, there's more. Kevin is genuinely concerned that the digital revolution puts photography as an art form and documentary medium at risk. He spends significant space in the book on managing and archiving digital negatives. He has an entire chapter devoted to metadata and one that discusses in detail the naming of digital negatives. The chapter on his bulletproof archive workflow alone is worth the price of the book. He has clearly given the topic of how to manage and preserve digital negatives a lot of thought and presents methods that are scalable, extensible, and evolutionary to accommodate changes in storage media, operating systems, and technology in general. His suggestion of using a number for each shoot or project is simple but brilliant. He further suggests going back through your old shoots and organizing them into project numbers. The beauty of it is they don't have to be in chronological order -- the metadata will take care of finding the photo you are looking for. Just do it. He points out that if one converts one shoot a day or every few days, your entire digital collection can be archived in bulletproof form in less than a year. Kevin suggests it is easy to keep track of the content in each project number with a spread sheet or a blank check book ledger -- something you can keep in your camera bag. Furthermore, he goes into more depth than I have seen anywhere on the compatibility of Lightroom and Bridge and the reciprocity that exists between them and Photoshop CS3.
Kevin has two in depth chapters on adjusting raw files: one on Adobe Camera Raw 4 and one on Lightroom's Develop module as well as making color correction and exposure adjustments. Again, the aspect of the instruction in these chapters that makes this book unique is Kevin's style of writing. It is casual, comfortable easy reading, as if a conversation. But more importantly, it is accurate and detailed, almost anticipating every possible question. There are three great chapters on presenting your photos: on the internet, as email presentations, and details on making custom contact prints. The chapter on email presentations is a good example of a little known feature that can benefit everyone. Once again Kevin makes it real when he starts the chapter with: "I don't know about you. I get truly tired of scrolling through email looking at attached JPEGs." Ever had that experience? I have.
This book is chock full of great advice, wonderful experiences, and real world productivity that every aspiring and professional photographer can use. The thing that makes it stand out and above is style: Kevin Ames' style.
Highly recommended.

Digital Photographers Notebook - Useful InformationReview Date: 2007-11-19
I have followed Kevin's column for several years and frequently revisit articles for color management techniques he has shared. In this book I found a couple of techniques and actions that I have already used in my work.
Kevin has done a nice job with this book and has provided tools that should be useful to you.
Digital Photographer's Notebook by Kevin AmesReview Date: 2008-01-22
"The Digital Photographer's Notebook" contains clear explanations of the many concepts of digital tools, from how digital cameras see and record light, why raw files are the only way to record images, how to organize and keyword your images and how to protect and backup your data so you never have to lose a single image. As one who has experienced the loss of data on one occasion, Kevin's thorough strategy of image backup may be worth the price of this book alone.
As the saying goes "but wait, there's more". Kevin shares his broad experience in capturing digital images both on location and in the studio and how to utilize Adobe Bridge to download your images from CF cards or work tethered directly to your computer. Strategies of color management are covered in detail, as are retouching tools that can be applied to entire folders of images. The Lightroom interface is covered in detail, from metadata, to the develop module, to printing and web galleries.
Once images are organized and processed Kevin takes you into Photoshop with some special tools and techniques to take your images to another level.
This book had its genesis in Kevin's columns from Photoshop User magazine. This expansion has a cohesiveness that belies these origins; the scope of this compilation is very much a book.
While the book indicates it is intended for the professional photographer, I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about his or her digital photography. Professional shooter, serious amateur, fine artist or photography student can all benefit from these sound organization strategies, clear explanations of tools and techniques, all wrapped up in a clear writing style with anecdotal observations that make reading a book on software actually a pleasure.
Not like all the restReview Date: 2007-09-20
It's not so much a dip and find, although that's possible, as it is a story where you pick up useful information along the way. He explains everything from capture to lighting and from Photoshop to Lightroom. His chapter on lighting (Chapter 4 Light Right!) was friendly but still clear and concise with examples that prove every point he makes. I found it more helpful than the books I have that only cover the subject of lighting.
I definitely recommend this book if you've been searching for something a little different that is packed full of lessons learned from an experienced pro!

Excellent!Review Date: 2008-07-11
One of the best features of the book are the more recent accounts as another reviewer mentioned. There are also descriptions of persecution in various countries around the world up to a couple of years ago. Overall, a sad but uplifting book that I recommend.

Good Focus on Recent EventsReview Date: 2008-05-14
In terms of content, this edition is particularly helpful for its emphasis on the persecution of recent years. The well-known martyrs of history are included as well but what I found most interesting about the book were the accounts from the last few years. The accounts from 2000 forward cover a full 200 pages in the 475 page book. This book brings home the fact that religious persecution is very much alive in our world and that martyrtdom has been and continues to be a real possibility for Christians in many parts of the world.

Barabra Cameron is a kindred spirit in Christ.Review Date: 2007-10-20
What makes Barbara Cameron's story exceptional is that anyone can relate to her. We're able to see her adult relationship with God begin with her simple belief that He is our Creator who helps us when we pray. Then we're able to see Barbara's realization that He is Everything and there is nothing without absolute Trust in Him, and the changes in her life that ensue.
The feelings and emotions described in this book are the feelings and emotions so many of us deal with everyday and are left wondering how to deal with issues of faith and submission to God.

My heart went out to poor Bridgett who is the real star of the family!! But their amazing transformation into Born Again, on fire for Jesus Chrsit and their passion that none should miss out on Heaven is so honest, and pure, and indeed rare in a Hollywood where it's hip to be anti-Christian, anti-morals, and whatever goes is OK. Praise God for this family and I know that He is indeed Blessing us with this most excellent book. Thank you Ray Comfort for inspiring Mrs. Cameron. Thank You Mrs. Cameron for sharing your life with us, and thank you Jesus for loving and dying for all of us so that we may be saved!

READ THIS BOOK!Review Date: 2008-01-18
Bennett backs up his teachings with Scriptural references throughout the book, which is also helpful
The Book That Launched a MovementReview Date: 2004-06-28
The book is written in a autobiography style with Bennett adding verses of Scripture here and there to help the reader see the teaching of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues (Acts 2:4). In short, Father Bennett wants his reader to know that this is indeed an experience with the Spirit but he wants you to see that it is based on Scripture.
While you might read this book and not agree with Father Bennett over the Spirit-Baptism, you can't help but to realize how hungry for Jesus we truly need to be and how God wants us to be on fire for Him (Romans 12:11-12; 1 Thess. 5:19).

It changed my life.Review Date: 2005-12-20
But this book really did change my life. I got curious about this thing called "the Baptism of the Holy Spirit." Someone loaned me the book. I saw a little prayer in it for receiving "the Heavenly languge of tongues". I read it out loud, with virtually no forethought and no real expectations of anything happening. Suddenly my jaw dropped and I was able to speak in tongues!
Not only that, but within several days another change, totally unexpected, could be seen. I had this new inner peace inside so that my formerly very bad temper was so removed from me that people who worked with me years later could hardly believe I ever had a temper! Victory over a nasty temper was by no means the only blessing that came forth, either.
I have not read this book for over 10 years. There might be things I would nitpick about now that I am a more matured believer. Or maybe not. In any case, I will always be grateful for it.

Excellent diagrams, charts, and photos make understanding 5S, manufacturing cells, kanbans, and techniques for setup reduction easy.
In fact, the basic concepts behind lean manufacturing are simple. The problem with most lean manufacturing books is that the authors often complicate the subject to make themselves seem as though they are smarter and have something unique to add (when they really don't). This book keeps lean simple.
