Anyone who has ever made roadtrip just to see a band must read this book. The writing is poetic without being confusing or sappy or any other negative connotation that sometimes implies. Once you read this book you will give it to someone else to read just so you both can sit there saying how good it is. The structure and typesetting of the book is great also. It is as visually aesthetic as it is mentally and emotionally. An incredible book that you won't want to put down. Then you'll wish you had written it.

this was a lovely little book. an online friend told me the premise of the book and based on that alone i ordered a copy. it took me awhile before i got into it, but once i was into it, there was no turning back.

softspoken indie rock boy travels and writes of his tales. as well as stories of back home. making a movie with friends. just a great little book.

Each chapter seems to have taken a different portion of my life and filled it in with his own experiences. From going to see bands and driving all night to get there, to his views on classic rock, and the verbally discribed cinematography of the last chapter, Voith paints a picture of a jaded, skeptical generation steeped in heartache and tempered with a desire for love and rock and roll.

Whenever I ask advice on what I should write about, I always hear, "Write what you know! Write from experience!" I then become depressed, since my life lacks anything really exciting or worthwhile to tell the world. In fact, I was right in one of these sad moods when Bridges With Spirit came in the mail, like a gift from heaven.

Adam Voith, like many good writers today, uses what he knows (music, college life, etc.) and mixes it in with fictional (or nonfictional) characters in made-up (or not) settings. The point is, Voith proves that writing doesn't have to work in a binary system where it's either fiction or nonfiction. Like Annie Dillard's books, it doesn't matter whether Bridges With Spirit is based on fact or not; these stories contain truth. You see it in the way Voith's characters love, hang out, and even die (see the brilliant "My Best Friend's Funeral," which has a word exchange too affecting to describe here). The author isn't afraid to experiment, and does it in a way that's not distracting and actually has a PURPOSE, such is the case of "Introduction: Mickey" (one of the best chapters in Bridges With Spirit).

The book's not without its glitches, though. There were several sections I shook my head and wondered on, such as the rather juvenile magnetic poetry and overly pretentious play/film/story combination chapter. Choice of font was a little wrong, too. The words are meant to be READ, not admired for their indie-look.

Other than the above complaints, Adam Voith's Bridges With Spirit is an excellence read for anyone looking for good literature these days in the vein of Salinger. Fans of independent music should buy this without hesiation.

Oh, and Voith's from Indiana, too, which is super cool.

Bridging - discovering the beauty of bridges

This is a little book (235 x 187 x 13mm) in metric measurement, but it is a very big book when one considers the quality of its construction and the quality of its contents. Its stitched signatures contain 283 glossy full colour bridge photographs from 16 North American and European countries. The photographs selected for publication were of bridges constructed throughout the last 20 centuries, including 20 stone structures of Roman construction. The book consists primarily of photographs, with a brief introductory text for various book divisions, and brief and generally interesting photo captions. The book appears to be a labour of love for Mr Robert S. Cortright, a retired banker, and his patient and supportive wife Kathy who initially were

`enthusiastic tourists, thrilled with all of the sights encountered in travel. Gradually [their] focus of attention and the focus of the camera began to be concentrated upon bridges. Ultimately, that concentration escalated to the level of an obsession.'

This obsession, supported and guided by a perceptive eye and an intuitive appreciation for the conceptual genius and exceptional craftsmanship displayed by early bridge builders, and by the time, patience, and persistence to locate suitable perspectives, resulted in a portfolio of over 4,000 bridge photographs from 20 countries. Of these, nearly 300, considered by Robert Cortright to be his best, now grace the pages of this fine publication.

Unfortunately, the editors, in an apparent effort to achieve page format variety, an effort that has generally succeeded, spoiled a few of the larger photographs by superimposing caption text directly on the photographs. However, this one fault diminishes the overall quality of the book only slightly.

Bridging will make a suitable companion to Fritz Leonhardt's Bridges: aesthetics and design and to the Highway Agency's The appearance of bridges. It should be in the personal library of all bridge engineers, architects and other fine bridge enthusiasts. For those interested in this book, copies should be obtained as soon as possible, since the modest cover price of $29.95 suggests that its first edition may not be available for long. M. P. Burke

I'm a giver of books: novels, poetry, cookbooks, and more than any other single book, this one: "Bridging." It has art and love, form and metaphor. The beautiful images and the metaphor of "bridging" -- and the personality of the recipient and the occasion for the gift -- make inscribing the book for a friend a pleasure.

I grew up with the Mississippi bridges of St. Louis and have lived for decades with the bridges of New York City -- so I feel that the photographer is a kindred spirit and made this book for me. Cortright awakens the eye and mind to the beauty of bridges -- from all angles and in all weathers. These are not promotional postcards, but lovingly composed and arranged photographs that give us not only the settings but the personalities of these bridges.

See the Civil Engineering review below for a fine appreciation of bridge builders' and Cortright's achievements -- technically and aesthetically. Better yet, take a look at the book.

Like most people, I'd never really noticed bridges before reading this book. After looking through this book at my father in-law's house, though, I can't stop noticing every one I encounter.

Bridges are little pieces of land suspended over a precipice. Engineers have spent the last 3000 years trying to solve the problems of seemingly uncrossable rivers and chasms, and Cortright's photographic selection of bridges, spanning more than two millenia and 16 countries, traces the increasingly more sophisticated ways that builders have triumphed. Interestingly, many seemingly high-tech solutions go right back to the very first arches and cantilevers. Others seem totally out of this world.

You'll learn alot about the different kinds of bridges and their basic principles, but more than that, this book is downright entertaining. Cortright appears to be one part expert photographer and one part eccentric, and his gorgeous photographs are grouped by in ways that tickle one's fancy rather than in a dry, dusty textbook manner. Categories include Stone Bridges, Wooden Bridges, Bridges of Iron and Steel, Bridges that Move, bridges that people live on, Aqueducts and much more. It even has a photo of a bridge with a giant troll living under it (I kid you not). The final chapter entitled "The Little Woman" is sure to catch you by surprise, and best sums up the quirky charm that enlivens this book.

Long on great photos with just the right amount of text to help you appreciate them, this book is great for an eight year-old or for a highway engineer.

Highly highly recommended.

This unique symphony of pictures can create a newly loved appreciation of bridges or emphasise a love with its array of vivid images from all over the world. One may have had the pleasure to view, experience and feel many buildings, however this book will change the way you see and feel about "just" a bridge.

I bought this book sight-unseen on the basis of reviews and, honestly, was a little disappointed. This book is basically a collection of the author's own pictures he has taken in his years of travelling the world and visiting bridges. I think the personality of the book will win you over because he really does have a wonderful appreciation of bridges. But if it was cloudy the day he visited that bridge, you get a picture on a cloudy day. I also thought the printing was not great quality.

This book is superb; the author's thoughts flow through my mind during every auction, competitive or not. He discusses in detail, for example, when a holding of xxx in a suit opened by opponents is terrible, neutral, or mildly positive. The studious reader will understand why a hand which opened 1 Spade with xxxxxx in spades improves vastly more than a hand which opened 1 Spade with KQJTx when partner raises Spades vigorously (in Lawrence's words, "Beware the short stubby suit.") Attention to the principles carefully explained and extensively illustrated (sometimes the same hand is geven with half a dozen different auctions to explain evaluation niceties) by Lawrence will vastly reduce your phantom sacrifices, -800s when dummy hit with "all the wrong cards," and +1370s which delight your teammates, who were -630 defending 3NT at the other table when their opponents never looked for a minor-suit slam.

Someone once charitably described me as an "average player." So, take my review for what it is worth.

I believe that this is an excellent book for its target audience. But, most novices are probably not ready to make much use of it.

The introduction says that it is for "experienced bridge players." I would interpret that as meaning those who have completed a series of beginning classes (perhaps based on the Audrey Grant - ACBL - series) and have played at least a year.

The book is well written. (An enhanced discussion of what Lawrence terms "shell points" would have been helpful to me.)
It helped me to understand in a more profound way how both "shape" and competitive auctions affect hand evaluation.

I think that this is a very insightful book, which I will read and re-read several times.

Hand Evaluation - just like the title says

You hold AQTx in a suit. 6 HCP. The suit is overcalled on your right. Its likely RHO holds the K and J. Your hand is worth maybe 2 extra tricks (finesse the T and Q). Lets say LHO overcalls the suit instead. Oh, oh! Bad news, they probably have the K and J, your hand is probably good for 1 trick, though its still got stoppers for NT.

The books has many bidding sequences where your hand fluctuates in value.
A singleton in your partners first bid suit is not necessarily an asset as their suit is hard to set up and secondary honors are worthless.

Axx gives you control as to when to take the ace - 1st 2nd or 3rd round. COmpared to a stiff ace.

You need some practical experience to get something out of the book. Read some books, play for a year, THEN read this. This is beyond counting HCP

No ZAR points or silver bullets, just how to dynamically value your hand.

This book will give you valuble insight into how these people tick, and your own fears, and ups and downs in life.

You can find out what causes stress, and do away with it, without harming yourself, or others around you.

I was amazed by the information in this CD. Finally, I found information about the human mind that actually makes sense.

The theory behind it is logical, the process is simple to learn, and the results DO work.

I used what I learned from this with my two sons, and it was amazing. They really enjoyed it, and I notice that they are happier since the Dianetic processing.

I recommend this to EVERYONE.

All I can say is WOW! This book is unbelievable, and the information in it changed how I think about everything, and how I react.

Since learning about the reactive mind, I can see it instantly in others, and myself. When people get angry, and spew from their mouth things they can't even remember afterwards because it is a 'tape from their mind' from a similar situation that invoked it, this was brilliant. I now watch myself, and correct it much quicker than ever before, and as a result has given me a more peaceful existence. I ran the drills with my husband, and I totally got how it worked, and a major win. We couldn't believe how easy it was to follow the steps, and actually help yourself and others to detect issues, and clear them.

If you want an easy to follow guide that you and a friend or loved one can do to help each other get stronger, healthier, and become a better person, it will be the best money you have ever spent.

Enjoy the journey, I know I am now.

A REAL book by a REAL photographer
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-01
This book is unique. First of all, Kevin Ames is a REAL photographer. He does it all and does it extremely well. But it is clear from the diversity of topics in this book and the care he uses to explain every step in detail, that Kevin has respect for technology and how it can be applied to make your photography better and your experience doing photography more enjoyable.

The first thing that stands out about this book is that it has STYLE. Style would seem out of place in a book that is a collection of somewhat unrelated subjects (since it was derived from over five years of monthly columns in Photoshop User magazine), but each chapter has depth and realism. Kevin lets us in on his real world experiences. He is not holding back. He makes a complete story out of each chapter and the photos are from his real experiences. It is something anyone can relate to. The photos mean something. They are real. In most books on photography, and especially Photoshop, the photos used in examples are just that -- they are taken out of context -- like stock. Kevin's models have names because they are real people.

But wait, there's more. Kevin is genuinely concerned that the digital revolution puts photography as an art form and documentary medium at risk. He spends significant space in the book on managing and archiving digital negatives. He has an entire chapter devoted to metadata and one that discusses in detail the naming of digital negatives. The chapter on his bulletproof archive workflow alone is worth the price of the book. He has clearly given the topic of how to manage and preserve digital negatives a lot of thought and presents methods that are scalable, extensible, and evolutionary to accommodate changes in storage media, operating systems, and technology in general. His suggestion of using a number for each shoot or project is simple but brilliant. He further suggests going back through your old shoots and organizing them into project numbers. The beauty of it is they don't have to be in chronological order -- the metadata will take care of finding the photo you are looking for. Just do it. He points out that if one converts one shoot a day or every few days, your entire digital collection can be archived in bulletproof form in less than a year. Kevin suggests it is easy to keep track of the content in each project number with a spread sheet or a blank check book ledger -- something you can keep in your camera bag. Furthermore, he goes into more depth than I have seen anywhere on the compatibility of Lightroom and Bridge and the reciprocity that exists between them and Photoshop CS3.

Kevin has two in depth chapters on adjusting raw files: one on Adobe Camera Raw 4 and one on Lightroom's Develop module as well as making color correction and exposure adjustments. Again, the aspect of the instruction in these chapters that makes this book unique is Kevin's style of writing. It is casual, comfortable easy reading, as if a conversation. But more importantly, it is accurate and detailed, almost anticipating every possible question. There are three great chapters on presenting your photos: on the internet, as email presentations, and details on making custom contact prints. The chapter on email presentations is a good example of a little known feature that can benefit everyone. Once again Kevin makes it real when he starts the chapter with: "I don't know about you. I get truly tired of scrolling through email looking at attached JPEGs." Ever had that experience? I have.

This book is chock full of great advice, wonderful experiences, and real world productivity that every aspiring and professional photographer can use. The thing that makes it stand out and above is style: Kevin Ames' style.

Highly recommended.

I found Part 2, which discusses the system and workflow for archiving files, worth the price of the book alone. I have been searching for some time for a better archival system than the chronological one I use. Kevin's detailed description of his system is the best article I have found on archiving files. The importance of what he calls "bulletproof archival workflow" hit home recently when I lost many files from two separate hard disks failures within a two-week period. I was going to use the new system to archive a large project involving old negatives and slides, but will now use his system first to eliminate the holes in my current archives.

I have followed Kevin's column for several years and frequently revisit articles for color management techniques he has shared. In this book I found a couple of techniques and actions that I have already used in my work.

Kevin has done a nice job with this book and has provided tools that should be useful to you.

As a photographer and Photoshop educator I am always on the lookout for books that will not only help me take advantage of the most current digital tools but also pass on the most up to date information to my students. With the advent of an all new Photoshop last year and the addition of Lightroom, I have found many students and fellow photographers confused about how to integrate both programs into their everyday working environment. Kevin Ames has worked as a professional photographer for many years and was an early adopter of digital tools when many were sticking with the comforts of the analog world. His depth of experience is complemented by his excellent teaching and writing skills to bring forth a book that will help professional photographers take the best advantage of what Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom can offer.
"The Digital Photographer's Notebook" contains clear explanations of the many concepts of digital tools, from how digital cameras see and record light, why raw files are the only way to record images, how to organize and keyword your images and how to protect and backup your data so you never have to lose a single image. As one who has experienced the loss of data on one occasion, Kevin's thorough strategy of image backup may be worth the price of this book alone.
As the saying goes "but wait, there's more". Kevin shares his broad experience in capturing digital images both on location and in the studio and how to utilize Adobe Bridge to download your images from CF cards or work tethered directly to your computer. Strategies of color management are covered in detail, as are retouching tools that can be applied to entire folders of images. The Lightroom interface is covered in detail, from metadata, to the develop module, to printing and web galleries.
Once images are organized and processed Kevin takes you into Photoshop with some special tools and techniques to take your images to another level.
This book had its genesis in Kevin's columns from Photoshop User magazine. This expansion has a cohesiveness that belies these origins; the scope of this compilation is very much a book.
While the book indicates it is intended for the professional photographer, I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about his or her digital photography. Professional shooter, serious amateur, fine artist or photography student can all benefit from these sound organization strategies, clear explanations of tools and techniques, all wrapped up in a clear writing style with anecdotal observations that make reading a book on software actually a pleasure.

I saw Kevin Ames on Peach Pit Press' podcast (on itunes) and I pre-ordered this book several months ago. This isn't like many of the books I already own (approaching 300) in that Kevin's style of writing is both conversational and instructional. The information is presented in a way that made me feel as though a good friend was there, teaching me and sharing his knowledge and experience.

It's not so much a dip and find, although that's possible, as it is a story where you pick up useful information along the way. He explains everything from capture to lighting and from Photoshop to Lightroom. His chapter on lighting (Chapter 4 Light Right!) was friendly but still clear and concise with examples that prove every point he makes. I found it more helpful than the books I have that only cover the subject of lighting.

I definitely recommend this book if you've been searching for something a little different that is packed full of lessons learned from an experienced pro!

First of all, I should comment that this is not really another addition of Foxe's original "Book of Martyrs" though several of those included were in Foxe's writings. That said, the book is a wonderful reading experience that has the potential to truely challenge readers with stories of Christian sacrifice. The stories go from the ancient world to the present. In particular, I found the accounts of the Boxer Rebellion martyrs interesting. I should mention that the details of Rowald Taylor's death in this book are a little different than I have read in versions of Foxe though they seem to match closer with Jasper Ridley's account in "Bloody Mary's Martyrs". Surprisingly, not much is said about those who suffered and died in the Soviet Union and Eastern Block. However, I find this acceptable as other works by the Voice of the Martyr's have focused heavily on European Communist persecution. The book focuses on sufferers who gave their lives and thus leaves out many people who went through terrible torture or other abuses for their faith and survived (once again though, other books tell the stories of many of those people). I personally liked the fact that this voulme dosen't just focus on one denomination but covers a vast spectrum of Christian beliefs.
One of the best features of the book are the more recent accounts as another reviewer mentioned. There are also descriptions of persecution in various countries around the world up to a couple of years ago. Overall, a sad but uplifting book that I recommend.

This edition of Foxe's Book of Martyrs is a good update of the classic. The book has an attractive (if a bit excessive) binding and contains several good illustrations. The typeface is easy to read. The book is a bit bulky and has a very odd tall and narrow shape.

In terms of content, this edition is particularly helpful for its emphasis on the persecution of recent years. The well-known martyrs of history are included as well but what I found most interesting about the book were the accounts from the last few years. The accounts from 2000 forward cover a full 200 pages in the 475 page book. This book brings home the fact that religious persecution is very much alive in our world and that martyrtdom has been and continues to be a real possibility for Christians in many parts of the world.

I saw this book at my church bookstore this morning. It is a beautiful book, with a parchment type of paper and decorative print. Buyers might want to know, however, that the publisher lists the book as bound in imitation leather, not genuine leather as Amazon has listed it. Not a problem as far as I'm concerned. I plan to buy it because of the stories it contains. My background in church history is sketchy and I'm interested in knowing more about Christians who have given their lives for their beliefs. This looks like a very accessible account of these extraordinary people.

Voice of the Martyrs has done a great job in compiling all the info for this book. This is great to purchase as an addition to the original classic "Foxe's Book of Martyrs", the main focus of "Voices..." appears to be Christians who were martyred in the past 100 years or so, however they do include info on earlier martyrs as well. The presentation of the book is excellent, the book is a nice hardcover with a leathery cover. I highly recommend for all Christians to pick up a copy, we should never forget all the lives that have been lost, and are continuing to be lost for the cause of Christ.

I must say that you going to be very surprised by this book! It isn't only what you probably think it is about, but oh so much more. Barbara is more real and honest with her readers than most people are even with themselves. She shines a flashlight in the dark corners of her life for all to see without apology because as the saying goes..."the truth shall set you free". Let's just say that she has faced her demons and won! Not only do I hope that all the people who read this book let it touch them, but I pray that all people start revealing their secrets in order to be set free, as well. I have and though it was hard, it was worth it because when you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear! Way to Go Barbara---Your truth has made a difference!

A great memoir about a woman doing her best to be fair and good in a system (Hollywood) that can corrupt the best of us.

What makes Barbara Cameron's story exceptional is that anyone can relate to her. We're able to see her adult relationship with God begin with her simple belief that He is our Creator who helps us when we pray. Then we're able to see Barbara's realization that He is Everything and there is nothing without absolute Trust in Him, and the changes in her life that ensue.

The feelings and emotions described in this book are the feelings and emotions so many of us deal with everyday and are left wondering how to deal with issues of faith and submission to God.

This wonderful book by Barbara Cameron explains the comings and goings, trials, tribulations, success's and heartbreaks of a Hollywood family. It's refreshingly honest with no spin at all. Mrs. Cameron had her shares of ups and downs in her personal life, all the while being a supportive mother who kept her "star" children in line and the "non-star" children were really the stars at home.
My heart went out to poor Bridgett who is the real star of the family!! But their amazing transformation into Born Again, on fire for Jesus Chrsit and their passion that none should miss out on Heaven is so honest, and pure, and indeed rare in a Hollywood where it's hip to be anti-Christian, anti-morals, and whatever goes is OK. Praise God for this family and I know that He is indeed Blessing us with this most excellent book. Thank you Ray Comfort for inspiring Mrs. Cameron. Thank You Mrs. Cameron for sharing your life with us, and thank you Jesus for loving and dying for all of us so that we may be saved!

This book has change the way I think and feel about prayer. At first, I thought what can I pray about for 40 mins.

I gave a book to one of my co-workers and she fell in love with the book.

I read "Give Me 40 Days" a least twice a year.

That was my first thought. I have been going to church since I was 5 years old but I never liked the repetitive nature of church services. This book taught me more about a personal relationship with God in 40 days than 45 years of of attending church services. I learned how to have honest conversations with God during my 40 days. I also learned to listen to God during prayer instead of just asking for things I thought I needed. This book can change your life!

excellent book, don't let the boring title fool you

Bennett backs up his teachings with Scriptural references throughout the book, which is also helpful

The Book That Launched a Movement

Review Date: 2004-06-28
Father Dennis Bennett wrote this book to simply give his curious readers a look inside the charismatic experience that was taking place at his Episcopal Church in southern California but little did he know that this book will literally launch a new movement within the evangelical church world. From this book has come millions of charismatics within mainline denominations such as Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, Roman Catholics, and many others.

The book is written in a autobiography style with Bennett adding verses of Scripture here and there to help the reader see the teaching of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues (Acts 2:4). In short, Father Bennett wants his reader to know that this is indeed an experience with the Spirit but he wants you to see that it is based on Scripture.

While you might read this book and not agree with Father Bennett over the Spirit-Baptism, you can't help but to realize how hungry for Jesus we truly need to be and how God wants us to be on fire for Him (Romans 12:11-12; 1 Thess. 5:19).

In this book you will find the best description of what the baptism of the Holy Spirit is about!! Includes also a biblical description of each gift of the Spirit and its application for today. In the last section you will find insights about how to walk in the Spirit. Since the very first time I read it 22 years ago, this book assisted me in my christian walking. I strongly recommend this book to every honest believer who is looking for the release of the power of the Holy Ghost in his/her life!!!

It changed my life.

All the time in the media you hear "Buy this. Buy that. It will change your life!" Yeah, right.

But this book really did change my life. I got curious about this thing called "the Baptism of the Holy Spirit." Someone loaned me the book. I saw a little prayer in it for receiving "the Heavenly languge of tongues". I read it out loud, with virtually no forethought and no real expectations of anything happening. Suddenly my jaw dropped and I was able to speak in tongues!

Not only that, but within several days another change, totally unexpected, could be seen. I had this new inner peace inside so that my formerly very bad temper was so removed from me that people who worked with me years later could hardly believe I ever had a temper! Victory over a nasty temper was by no means the only blessing that came forth, either.

I have not read this book for over 10 years. There might be things I would nitpick about now that I am a more matured believer. Or maybe not. In any case, I will always be grateful for it.

We are going through a major re-organization from push system manufacturing to pull manufacturing in our facility and throughout the company. This book fits in quite nicely with this endeavor. The book does a nice job of explaining concepts and implementation of the principles. It is easy to read. Additionally, it has forms for suggested use in organizing information, AND it explains the forms and how to use them. I am purchasing multiple copies for distribution to all of my Manufacturing Engineers. Too I am recommeding it for use throughout the company.

Great training resource

Though the title implies implementation, I see this more as an educational resource used to train both shop floor workers and management alike. Under this context, this book is outstanding.
Excellent diagrams, charts, and photos make understanding 5S, manufacturing cells, kanbans, and techniques for setup reduction easy.
In fact, the basic concepts behind lean manufacturing are simple. The problem with most lean manufacturing books is that the authors often complicate the subject to make themselves seem as though they are smarter and have something unique to add (when they really don't). This book keeps lean simple.
Great book.

This is a book that small and medium-sized manufacturers can use to develop in-house training materials for educating their workforce on the how-to's of WCM. The explanations are succint with simple and well-written examples, backed by the rich experience of the authors. Supplementary materials available from the authors would allow any Plant Manager to develop customized training materials specific to his/her shopfloor. A particular merit of this book is the that it recommends the sequence in which the various elements of a WCM manufacturing program ought to be taught/implemented for best results. I plan to recommend this book as a reference to undergraduates who co-op or intern at companies as part of their educational experience.

Excellent manual provides "How-to" details and consideration

Unlike other books on "world class manufacturing" which are intended more for business school students and management theorists, this book really is a Shop Floor Manual as the title suggests. Each subject and technique is explained, application considerations are given, and real life "how-to" instructions are provided so that all concerned, from production worker to group leader and production manager, can easily understand and implement the technique in their company. Implementation of just one of the hundreds of world class manufacturing techniques covered will return the price of the book manyfold.
