Freemantle's debut - written each day as he travelled to and from 'work' - is a perfectly balanced story. A fine and believable central character pitted against a defector who doesn't ring true. It's short and sweet, unlike many espionage novels, but doesn't waste a word. Thrilling and satisfying.

Why should Victor Pavel, Russia's brilliant, world-renowned space scientiest, honored as a hero by his country, suddenly decide to defect to the west, abandon his wife and children to Soviet reprisals, perhaps even death? This is the question that baffles Adrian Dodds, a quiet, unassuming young man, despised and abandoned by his wife, but brilliant at his job of processing every defector to Britain from the Communist bloc. The Americans and the British both are eager to put Pavel to work. Only Dobbs doubts his authenticity and abandons his timidity to voice his distrust of Pavel until his job and his life is in jeopardy.

This book is a very informative guide to the wonders of granite mountain tops in the continental United States. It begins with a general introduction to the science of granite domes, how they are were formed in geological time and shaped by glaciers, and the resulting unique ecology and flora. Then Wessels takes us on a tour of the major granite dome peaks of the US, from Acadia National Park in Maine, west to Yosemite. Each chapter in this second section is both travelogue of a climbing adventure Wessels took on the mountain, and nature guide, describing ecological aspects of the mountain. At the end of the book are appendices that provide a more detailed look at the geologic time line of granite peaks, a list of plants that may be found on American granite peaks, a glossary, a selected biography for further reading, and an index. The book is amply illustrated with black and white photographs by Wessels and illustrations by Brian Cohen.
The book is quite enjoyable as well as informative. I found the introductory chapters on geology particularly interesting, as they explain the nature of granite deposits and how granite is different from other types of rocks. Most important, reading the book makes me want to strap on my hiking boots and get out and climb so that I can experience these wonders for myself!

First off, I loved this book. I know some will poo poo this book for not being a hardcore geology book, but thats what makes it so good. Mr. Wessells gives a very good geology course limited to the granite outcroppings in the U.S. and he does it so that is is very interesting. At times I felt like I was right there at his side as he described the landscape he was in. I had to limit myself to a chapter a day, though I cheated a couple of times, I could have read it in one sitting. I sure wish my geo classes in college had been this interesting.
Brian Cohen's illustrations are fantastic as well.
My only disappointment was the author's photographs, though that can be forgiven fro writing such a good book. It is now a permanent part of my library.

Richard Tibbitts is the medical illustrator to watch, the heir apparent to Brödel and Pernkopf. The authors of this book should thank their lucky stars to be blessed by Mr. Tibbitt's amazing artistic talent. Students using this book will cherish the rich educational experience afforded by the thoughtful, carefully planned illustrations that convey more knowledge in less time than thousands of words. Well done Mr. Tibbitts! Just when we think your work has reached the pinnacle, you again surprise us by outdoing yourself with another sublime and heroic masterpiece! The world is a richer place for your diligent efforts!

A remarkable tool and extraordinary reference for anyone interested in studying, practicing, or teaching somatic education. As a GUILD CERTIFIED FELDENKRAIS PRACTITIONERcm, I found the surface anatomy pages particularly invaluable. The extraordinary illustrations on these pages enable one to view in precise detail the relationship between the surface landmarks of the body such the chest and shoulders and the specific bones which lie under these areas. Being able to view such a relationship is extremely helpful in my work. Indeed, these surface anatomy pages as well as the CT, MRI and x-ray images in Gray's Atlas of Anatomy provide a very clear and vivid idea of what lies beneath...

I am a great fan of Web confrontations. To the Web-illiterate of you, that is pitting popular pop culture icons against one another in a battle decided by the votes of those who log on to the site. These pioneers vote for whom they see has the better chance of winning.
But enough about what it is! This is a concentration of the best matches, commentary, and responses. This is one of the highest sources of concentrated sadistic humor. I sincerely hope that they produce a sequel to this great book!

This is a great read for any fan of the Montreal Canadiens. Whether you are a long-time follower and want to relive some moments of glory, or a recent admirer and want to learn about the incredible legacy of this team, you will like this book. Even to those newer to the sport can easily get caught up in the vivid accounts of times past. At times the descriptive stories about some of the greatest moments in the history of the game brought a rush of emotion and pride as I pictured myself in the Forum of old, cheering on the Richards, Toe Blake, Ken Dryden, Guy Lafleur, and so many others. If you like hockey, this book should be considered a must-read.

This story of friendship speaks to all of us, child and parent alike. Here are two critters who are wonderful friends but opposite personalities. Hamlet, the pig, is the daredevil -- completely fearless and he doesn't seem to learn from experience. Then, there's Quince, the porcupine, who serves as both a friend and a very cautious parental type, who wants only for Hamlet to look for nice, quiet, safe activities. Of course, Quince is always there, ready to pick up the pieces and provide comfort after the inevitable disaster.
The illustrations are both intricate and delightful. It takes a kid to notice many of the details. The first time we read the book my daughter said, "Look, Mom, the shopkeeper has to stand on phone books to see over the counter."

As a child of the 80s, it's only natural that I was a fan of star wars growing up. As a fan of books, it's only natural that sooner or later I'd get involved in reading star wars. Admittedly, while being a fan of the original trilogy, and SOME parts of the prequels, I never touched a star wars book or comic before in my life. A co-worker lent me this book some months ago. Recently with the whole star wars turns 30 celebration, I watched the original trilogy on DVD again and got 'bit by the bug' as they say. The same happened to me with the star trek 40th birthday, grabbing onto the original series on DVD as well as as many paperbacks as I could. Anyway, enough back story ;)
I was pleasantly surprised by how good this book was. I wasn't expecting that much but from start to finish, this book has that authentic spirit of star wars. And it centers around one of my favoirte characters, Han Solo.
The characterization is spot on. Han, always looking out for number one seems to have an uncanny knack of getting involved in situations where he ends up being the hero, whether he likes it or not. The ironic part of it is is that he's GOOD at it! This book carries that characterization out very well.
Just looking for ship's repairs and mock up trader papers, Han gets involved in a conspiracy involving the galactic Trade Authority in which 'enemies' of the Authority just happen to disappear without a trace.
The play between Han, Chewbacca and the rest of teh characters, both good and bad (especially the droids..we all know how he feels about them) is really fun to read and there's plenty of action in the grand star wars fasion that, as fans, we're used to and have come to expect. My next read is going to be Han Solo's revenge and I can't wait. Highly recommended to any Star Wars fan, hardcore and casual alike.

I was looking for a book which goes beyond the usual cliches about North Korea, so although I wasn't that interested in literature I bought this book. It provides a fascinating look at a North Korea that I hadn't known existed. We all tend to think that the personality cult kicked in right after 1945, but this book shows that it developed over time, with literary figures like Han Sorya playing a large role in developing what Myers calls the "iconography" of the personality cult. The book is also entertaining, since it describes the various factional struggles inside the literary scene. The analysis of Han's novels is very wittily done. After reading this book, I felt that I knew the North Korea of the forties and fifties.

This is really the only study of North Korean culture in English, but it is also indispensable for historians and political scientists. Myers' explanation of the DPRK's glorification of spontaneous impulses/rages etc goes a long way towards explaining that country's long list of idiotically self-defeating terrorist acts - from the ax murders at the DMZ to the Rangoon bombing.

Handbook includes disease states, and categorizes medications of primary choice, and provides secondary alternatives. There are excellent abbreviated text outlining etiology and pathophysiological parameters. As well as step wise flow charts as a decision tool and guideline. The tables for medication dosing and comparability between different classes of drugs are extremely helpful, visually and content wise! In hospital pharmacy practice, this handbook has been my peripheral brain.

This handbook is a collection of chapters by many well-known Chicano (Mexican American) psychologists. Given that Mexican Americans are the largest subgroup of Latinos in the United States, and that Latinos are the largest ethnic minority group in the U.S., this handbook is long overdue! It is perfect for the individual practitioner, as a text for undergraduate or graduate courses, or as a reference tool. Chapters cover such material as the history of Chicano psychology, identity development, psychological assessment, psychotherapy with men and women, and teaching. It is clear that a lot of work went into this book, and I am grateful to all of the contributors for publishing such a relevant reference tool!
An essential component of any library on US ethnic groups.

This is an OUTSTANDING volume that features wonderfully comprehensive and extremely well written contributions by some of the most reputable scholars in Chicana/o psychology. It has been a very long time since I have been this excited about an academic book and can not imagine a library on US ethnic issues complete without a copy of it. I am sorry I waited this long to buy it. The contributors have definitely set a very high standard for edited volumes on this subject. One can but hope that other compilations extending this caliber of scholarship to other Latina/o groups are forthcoming.
