This handbook is a collection of chapters by many well-known Chicano (Mexican American) psychologists. Given that Mexican Americans are the largest subgroup of Latinos in the United States, and that Latinos are the largest ethnic minority group in the U.S., this handbook is long overdue! It is perfect for the individual practitioner, as a text for undergraduate or graduate courses, or as a reference tool. Chapters cover such material as the history of Chicano psychology, identity development, psychological assessment, psychotherapy with men and women, and teaching. It is clear that a lot of work went into this book, and I am grateful to all of the contributors for publishing such a relevant reference tool!

An essential component of any library on US ethnic groups.

This is an OUTSTANDING volume that features wonderfully comprehensive and extremely well written contributions by some of the most reputable scholars in Chicana/o psychology. It has been a very long time since I have been this excited about an academic book and can not imagine a library on US ethnic issues complete without a copy of it. I am sorry I waited this long to buy it. The contributors have definitely set a very high standard for edited volumes on this subject. One can but hope that other compilations extending this caliber of scholarship to other Latina/o groups are forthcoming.

Practical examples of using R for analysis
Helpful Votes: 24 out of 24 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-19
When it comes to working with statistics, R is a great tool to have at your disposal. Sadly, there is a shortage of information that closes the gap between the simplistic examples used to learn data analysis with R and the more complicated techniques necessary to use R when working with more complex data sets.

_A Handbook of Statistical Analyses Using R_ sits nicely between the traditional introductory tomes for R (Introductory Statistics with R by Peter Dalgaard, or Statistics: An Introduction using R by Michael J. Crawley being two of the best) and the more advanced single topic texts which have a tendency to focus on one particular modeling technique.

As a workbook, the examples are short enough to be worked through in anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. And while they often assume that the reader is familiar with certain aspects of statistical analysis, a quick refresher is provided for most topics before the exercises.

As a quick reference used to give examples of how to analyze different types of data, the book stands out for having a diverse set of worked examples that give a great jump start into working with R if you need a sample to get going.

If you work with R long enough, you'll find that you need a variety of reference sources to draw upon. _A Handbook of Statistical Analyses Using R_ is a solid addition to that reference library.

covers most important statistical techniques using the R Language

Brian Everett has previously written similar handbooks for SAS and SPlus. As R is becoming the language of choice in statistical computing in research particularly academoc research this book is a welcome addition. This book is actually a great booj on statistical methods and covers most of the important modern advances including ANOVA, linear regression, generalized linear models with emphasis on logistic regression, probability density estimation (nonparametric), recursive partitioning (i.e. classification and regression trees), survival analysis, bootstrap methods, longitudinal data analysis including mixed effect linear models and generalized estimating equations, meta analyses, principal component analysis, multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis, In each case the methods are clearly explained, are illustrated using real data for examples using R code that is listed for the student to replicate. results are presented through computer output and graphs. This is a very diverse set of methods covering many topics and expecially those commonly needed in clinical trials. the book also contains a very useful bibliography. unfortunately Bayesian techniques are sorely missing with the only reference to Bayes being Schwarz's Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) that is used for model comparisons.

This book helps open up sensible techniques thst can be applied to a wide variety of problems that the applied researcher might need. The only major technique that is missing here are the Bayesian hierarchical models that have been used extensively in the medical device arm of the FDA (CDRH) are not covered in this fine text.

New England's "other hockey team" beautifully remembered

The Whalers rich history is beautifully preserved by Codagnone in a book that is a must buy for any serious hockey fan. The Whalers started their existence in 1972 in the cozy confines of both the Boston Arena and Boston Garden. Competing with the Bruins of the vaunted Orr/Esposito era they more than held their own as they captured the WHA's Avco Trophy behind the leadership of former Bruin captain Teddy Green. Their Hartfod years were marked by the arrival of Gordie Howe with sons Mark and Marty and later highlighted by the play of stars such as Ron Francis, Mike Liut, Kevin Dineen, Blaine Stoughton and Chris Pronger among others. This richly illustrated tale pays respect to an underdog franchise that finally gained Stanley Cup glory in 2006 as the Carolina Hurricanes.

A must-read for serious hockey fans

Brian's new book is chock full of hockey lore, with plenty of rare photographs and untold stories from the Whalers franchise. It's well researched and visually fascinating... the perfect coffee table book for any sports fan that grew up in the New England area. If you remember their early days in the WHA and their bitter rivalry with the Boston Bruins, this book will bring it all back. Brian follows the team through their move to Carolina and Stanley Cup Championship in 2006.

WOW! i happened to come across this book surfing the web, and what a pleasant surprise. Seaward has done an oustanding job of synthesizing a great wealth of information and packaging it in a very easy to read, easy to understand silver bullet of human spirituality. I loved the exercises at the end of each chapter, they really helped to pull the information together in an easy to use fashion.

If only we understood how very important that phase from days gone by is to our very wellbeing. My grandmother use to punctuate everything she said or heard with these words ("bless my soul"). Now, in reading "Health of the Human Spirit", one sees how that montra must have helped her reach an active, vital age of 86. The spiritual wellbeing of our soul comes hand in hand with the wellbeing of our physical being, as is shown over and over in this wonderful book. So, for what ever is ailing you, read this book. It will "bless your soul"!

In his autobiography Heaven Can Help, Brian Edward Hurst gives us a treasure. In it, he offers timeless spiritual wisdom as he shares with us the fascinating accounts of his life experiences and the realization of his own extraordinary mediumistic gifts. His writing is genuine and sincere, delightful and educational, entertainingly spine-tingling, awesome and lovely, and it offers very serious and important information at the same time. In his charming voice, he chronicles his early days giving wonderful details about his relationships with his family and friends, his amazing journeys abroad, his Spiritualist affiliations and the processess he goes through in his experiences with direct communications with the spirit world. Discover how Mr. Hurst develops into one of the world's most important spiritual teachers of our time.

What can we learn from reading Heaven Can Help? This book inspires me with awe and wonder and challenges one to think about one's own existence. So, read it if you have the courage to. Universal, important messages resonate through this book--that we are energetic beings that survive our bodies after death, that we simply must be aware, and that we are very much surrounded by those who love and help us from the heaven world. This story will instill hope and peace where there is none; it will remind those who have forgotten, to have faith and comfort again; and it will confirm and validate the truth of the heart and the soul for those who are already on a level of awareness. Heaven Can Help ought to be pre-requisite reading for Life! If everyone read this book, it might make the world on this earth plane a nicer place to be. There would be more conscious understanding and compassion among human beings and for animals.

Brian Edward Hurst is a treasure. Yes, indeed Heaven can help, and Mr. Hurst has helped Heaven and Earth as he continues to be of service to mankind in the marvelous healing work that he does helping us to connect with ourselves, with our loved ones here and in the beyond, and thus with universal truth. Brian Hurst, you truly are the rainbow bridge to the heaven realm. Thank you for sharing with us in writing your beautiful and profound autobiography, Heaven Can Help.

A Very Charming Book........!!

Review Date: 2002-05-12
This is a very charming book by Brian Hurst. It starts out a little slow for my taste, but it picks up, and becomes very interesting. The first part of the book is mostly about Brian's childhood, and how he felt different from most children, and how he did not have a very good relationship with his parents, always trying to please them, but not able to, by no fault of his own. His Mother wasn't exactly the most supportive person in his life. He stumbles and bumbles about learning of his extraordinary psychic abilities, finally to become at ease with them, and how these abilities grew into an amazing side of Brian Hurst and furthered his awesome career/life. There is no doubt at all about his honesty and sincerity of all the events that take place, and you almost wish you could invite him over for dinner to chat about all of this. All in all it is a very enjoyable book, worth the money. He is a very believable fellow, who seems like he could live next door to you and you might not know how amazing he really is! But beware, the first two chapters are boring and too involved in his childhood, which is not exactly the most fascinating reading, but it DOES get better! I'm giving him 5 stars because I truly believe him, and he has a fascinating life! Brian, why don't you come to Hawaii so I can meet you !!? Bottom line.....buy the book, it's worth it.

Here Comes Charlie M...takes up where the first book left off with Charlie still not free of the clutches of British Intelligence. Except this time instead of Charlie being in disgrace, it's the young snobs in charge. They are now seeking to cover up past mistakes and indiscretions with new ones. And the chief object of their elaborate planning is Charlie Muffin. After all, he was responsible for the loss of two of the Department's best operatives as well as the mastermind behind the Soviet European spy network. It was Charlie who made the men in charge look like monkeys. And now the department is out for revenge. Flushed from his safe retreat in Zurich, he knows his life is in danger. Can he outwit them again?

Charlie M...Like his name, Charlie Muffin is an oddity. An overtired, overdrawn, middle-aged anachronism. To the baronet Army colonel and his clean-sweep university graduates, Charlie, with his Manchester accent, his crumpled suits, and leaking Hush Puppies is the final inherited embarrassment from a disgraced Department they are committed to revitalize. Who better to sacrafice in the capture of Alexei Berenkov, the KGB general who masterminds the Soviet Union's European Spy network from behind the counter of his London wine importer's business? They forget, of course, that Charlie Muffin is a survivor. And when the amateurish upper-class young snobs begin bungling the biggest diplomatic coup in three decades...the defection of the head of the KGB itself...Charlie Muffin is resurrected from a desk in what had been the secretary's rest room for the riskiest assignment of his career. Once again, he proves his mettle...almost too well.

Another Five Star Performance!

Review Date: 2007-01-14
I've read both books written by Officer Brian Bentley. I wish I had the chance to meet this fine brother in arms! We've seen the usual "Root! Root! Recruit!" squeaky clean image of the Los Angeles Police Officer deplicted in such tv series as LAPd Life On The Beat, Adam 12, among other shows. This book actually shows the real world behind not only the LAPD, but sadly alot of law enforcement agencies everywhere! You could be a Housing, Transit, Campus, Deputy Sheriff, Highway Patrol/State Police Officer. The politics and lack of comraderie are the same! Officer Bentley brought my occupation into reality and it took reading his book to finally put my career (Even Though I've Worked For Over 20 Years In This Field!) into some form of prospective! We in law enforcement all wanted to make the world safe. And create change. But it is much an uphill battle. Especially if one gets no support from their colleagues, or administration. Change the names! Change the faces! But we've all worked with someone like the characters the author deplicts! Kudos to you Officer Bentley!

I found this book by chance but it was definately one of the greatest finds of my life. I'm giving a copy to everyone I care about so they can start experiencing positive changes in their lives now also.
