The single way of life in a capitalist society
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-09
After finishing "Think and Grow Rich" I have suddenly realized that this simple slogan is the single way of life in a capitalist society. In this book, as the only way of getting rich, the author advocates goal-directed way of life, purposefulness, constant self-perfection, courage, the skill to think and to act, and the other similar traits of character.

Many people came to a conclusion that the wealth, in some extent, depends on a level of education, motivation, self-esteem, and so on. The problem is that not all the people in equal extend incline to the education, to their self-improvement. This is because of the differences of their needs, habits, abilities, capabilities, and so on. Leo Tolstoy in his novel "Resurrection" arose a question of how to improve the level of education within a society: from inside of each individual or from outside? Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Should first the level of education of each and every individual be risen which yields a revolution (dialectic transition of quantity into quality) or the revolution should make the environment to foster the education of every individual?

The traits advocated by Napoleon Hill correspond to the first Leo Tolstoy's way of improving society. If each and every individual will improve, the society will automatically improve. The second way of Leo Tolstoy (create the environment which will foster the education of every individual) is contrary to Napoleon Hill's ideas: "if something is got for free or without big effort, it won't be appreciated, won't be handled with care or you won't trust it". Free education and medical care won't be respected properly by people, regardless how good this education and medical care are. That's why the socialist society will develop slower than capitalist. Marxists knew this and have built the concept of World revolution (to overthrow of capitalism in all countries), and a further idea by Trotsky that it was impossible to build socialism in a single country. Trotsky wrote that the socialist economy is not as efficient as capitalist and without the World revolution the USSR won't be able to overcome its economic underperformance.

Napoleon Hill praises the freedom and opportunities of the capitalist society of the U.S. in particular, which gives, according to Napoleon Hill, boundless opportunities for an individual who is able to think and grow rich.

I also recommend "The Road to Serfdom" by F. A. Hayek in addition to this book. Although "Think and Grow Rich" is a classical self-help book for a general reader while "The Road to Serfdom" is mostly academic, I think that both of them should be read.

This is the original classic personal-growth and wealth-building book that all the self-help "Guru"s have been copying and imitating. Buy this and learn from the original. Buy this and learn the classic techniques the new-age thinking was built on, and that the "New-Wage" hucksters imitate without crediting it.

I bought this book for my five year old son who is an emerging reader. He loves both hearing and reading the story (over and over). The pictures and story are fun and engaging.

The story is about two farm pigs who are eventually sent away from their farm because of their prankish activities. They are then "adopted" by another farmer and his wife who enjoy their antics.

Funny, witty, cute, great illustrations

A great book for me to read to my children. I was surprised on how much they loved the characters presented. They enjoyed the pictures and we laughed together constantly through the pages. I recommend for anyone needing a good book to read to their children, even if they are under the age recommendation, as my boy and girl are, they will enjoy it.

There are few books out these days that a parent can actually enjoy with their children. This one was the most outrageously funny book I have ever read. It made me giggle down to my toes! I strongly recommend this book to any parent who wants their child(ren) to learn that being different is an alright way to be. I think it will help those children that may feel a little out of place in their own shoes.

Brian's advice on goals is really great and will help push you towards achieving your goals. I like how this CD is focused on the topic of goals and how to propel yourself towards your goals as fast as possible. He really knows what he's talking about. His CD's are always well-organized, practical, and based 100% on solid, practical real world experience. He gives a lot of strategies, so what I do is I listen to the whole thing and I pick a few things to apply to my life. Then later I listen again and apply a few more things. It's probably too much for anyone to try to use all his advice at one time. The more I learn about business and success, the more I learn that Brian Tracy is 100% correct in everything he says.

I highly recommend getting EVERYTHING by Brian Tracy. It's all great stuff. I also recommend books and CD's by Napoleon Hill and Harv Eker.

What I like about Brian is that he has a lifetime of successful experience in the business world and only tells you things that are truly useful. He doesn't waste your time with impractical drivel. I always say learn from the best, and Brian is one of the very best.

Best summary for success principles

Review Date: 2007-09-10
This is my very first review for a book. This book is such a great success book that I wanted to recommend this book to everyone. This is a much more refined version of Brian Tracy's earlier work "The Psychology of Achievement" which I have heard numerous times.

I have read many books on success but this book really summarizes the best principles from all. It is a very practical and easy to follow book with action items after each topic. In fact there is so much in this book, that every time you read/listen to this book you will learn and be inspired to do something new and better. As Brian Tracy says, success can be learnt best from successful people. And he is a great example of a success.

The biggest thing I got from Brian Tracy's books is that I am responsible for my own success. Rather than blaming people or circumstances, this book made me focus on doing things rather than staying in the blaming loop.

All in all, I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to be more successful in any aspect of their lives.

There aren't too many divorce books written to help men. But this one is a must read for anyone thinking of divorce, in the middle of divorce or trying to cope with life after divorce. I wish I had this book 10 years ago when I went through my divorce. It would have saved me thousands of dollars and given me everything I needed to get on with my health and sanity and finances intact. The way divorce usually goes nowadays, men desperately need this book. It's easy to read and has great advice mixed with some humor and social commentary that was dead-on. I highly recommend it. I've already bought three copies to give to friends.

About a year and a half ago I heard these guys on a local radio show talking about Internet Dating and I bought their book. I found love on the Internet with help from The Ultimate Man's Guide To Internet Dating.

Now I hear them last month talking about divorce!! My best friend was about to divorce his wife of 3 years and to be honest with you he wasn't the same guy he used to be. I figured that if they helped me find love they could help him with his divorce. I bought this book for my buddy and he has done a 360. I never liked his wife and my girlfriend didn't like her either. She always nagged him and was not a nice person. He was like a zombie because of her!!! Now he's empowered and no longer has his head buried in the sand. He and his wife are getting divorced but he won't be shelling out thousands of dollars to a lawyer because of this book. Thank you again Ultimate Man's Guide, I now have my best friend back!!

Martha Grace Reese has spent years studying that dynamics of church evangelism and offers her wisdom in this three book series. But for Reese this is a personal passion - she believes in the life-changing gift of the church and is empowering us, through these books, to make a difference. Reese has "unbound her heart" in this book so that we can see a glimpse of the possibilities before us as local church pastors and leaders. This is a must read for every pastor and leader of a mainline church.

Mainline churches have not won any evangelism series for a long time. Just as the Boston Red Sox broke the curse of the Bambino, the Real Life Evangelism Series knocks one out of the park. Reese equips mainline church leaders with prayerful and practical tools needed to change the church through the power of Christ's redeeming love.

This approach is, of course, based on "Unbinding the Gospel" and works best with a leadership-based understanding of those principles. And you really want to read that, anyhow.

But if you've felt like you've tried "40 Days of . . .whatever" and it just didn't fly, try this -- really. Especially for mainline/oldline congregations who find some of the language or approaches in Saddleback or other denominational programs too, um, "too," this approach is basic, straightforward, but utterly non-condescending. Members and visitors at churches looking for an approach to spiritual growth and congregational vitality will find these books an answered prayer -- which is, in fact, the whole point of what Gay Reese is writing and speaking about.

God answers prayer.

But you have to ask, and -- big step, this -- you have to listen.

And then you have to do something about what you hear . . . which is where the real adventure begins. These books give you a clear run at making the "leap of faith" to do all of that and more.

In Grace & Peace,

Sober and sobering account of terrorism anno 2006

Review Date: 2008-07-02
Brian Michael Jenkins is perhaps the number one US expert on terrorism and thus writes with almost peerless authority. Those who have studied the terrorism literature will know that he was the one who coined the much quoted phrase "terrorists want a lot of people watching, not a lot of people dead" back in 1975 (he revised this opinion later).

Jenkins is also a good writer. This book reads easily and shouldn't be too hard to get through or too boring for anyone, I imagine. I recommend Unconquerable Nation without reservations as perhaps the best summary of the threat from terrorism at the present date.

The Best Analysis of the Situation I've Read

Review Date: 2007-04-19
Mr. Jenkins seems to be very well qualified to write about this subject, since the study of terrorism has been his career at the Rand Corporation for many years. I like that he doesn't appear to support either political party; there's no finger pointing. Yet, he clearly states and explains what a big mistake it was to take out Saddam Hussein. First he tells us what and who we should be fighting. Instead of just merely saying that these 'folks' are very evil and should be eradicated, he explains what motivates them. We learn that our enemy has been brainwashed to believe that God wants them to kill or at least create havoc for all infidels (the West, their sympathizers and other nonbelievers in their militant brand of Islam). Jenkins doesn't have an opinion about whether or not we should now leave Iraq. Fighting this enemy won't be over whether we quickly leave Iraq or annihilate the entire country of Iraq or something in between these two scenarios. That's because our enemy is all over the world and won't be deterred by anything we do just in Iraq. We need to change the murderous thinking of our enemy. Sort of doing some reverse brainwashing. We need to work on breaking down their recruiting machine while also trying to physically destroy them and their supporters wherever in the world we discover them. The author accepts that 'winning' this war will take many years. The author has many suggestions how to go about doing this. We need to fight this war from many different directions. In the mean time, we need to get used to occasional horrible events happening. He doesn't think that our enemy (the Jihadists as he calls them) will try anything too horrific on us. If they launch nuclear weapons on us, then they know that we would return the favor by wiping out entire regions of the world where they reside; which will be counterproductive even to our death loving Jihadists. I personally am not so sure of this. I believe that our world may not survive if our enemy gets too far along with their weaponry. Nonetheless, I think the author's book should especially be read by our current and would be future national leaders. Also, those that plan to vote in our next Presidential election, or others that want to actively, in any way they choose, help the non-Jihadists win this war, should read this book. Our nation's future existence, as we know it, might depend upon following the approaches suggested in this book to eventually defeat the Jihadists and their way of thinking.

Read THIS book... then you'll KNOW what's going on!!

The author (Brian Jenkins) writes, not only with authority, (but then who doesn't these days?), but also in a way that makes this debacle and it's potential solutions, (and ongoing difficulties), crystal clear to even a neophyte.

I've read other of his works and this is, easily, not only his best but one that can also be read and understood quite clearly though the reader may be neither in the terrorism industry, (and it is, so deal with that reality), nor particularly interested in this field beyond mere daily survival and continuing ability to go about one's business relatively undisturbed.

The book deserves a wider audience if only for its thoroughness, readability and pinpoint clarity about what has become an ever too real part of our daily lives.

I've never written a review before... this author is truly talented in his ability to create understanding and a sense of personal efficacy, rather than consternation, where once concern and mystification may have resided.

Kudos.

I'm a voracious reader of books and articles about recent developments in information technology (IT). This book is the first I've found to present the latest research in economics, business, and public policy related to IT, and to do so in a way that is accurate, comprehensive, readable, and engaging. The editors deserve kudos for their choice of articles and for enforcing the analytical rigor so often lacking in consulting reports and popular articles in this field. I heartily recommend this book!

Some of the chapters in this book have priceless material, e.g. the Chapter on "Understanding Digital Markets" by Smith, Bailey and Brynjolfsson and the review of technology's role in growing income inequality by Katz.

We need more research like this.
