Compact, but stuffed with information

There has really never been another garden book as compact and informative as Michael Wright's handbook. Whenever a 'new' plant hits the market, I look it up in the handbook, and although the book was originally published in the U.K. in 1984, more often than not I'll find the exact cultivar I'm looking for. The plant identification, cultivation, and descriptions are all right on the mark. Any time I can find a copy of this book, I buy it to give to my gardening friends, and every one of them thinks it's a treasure.

This book is the most complete I have ever read. It is out of print and I keep it checked out from the library system. I wish I knew how to get this book re-printed. I know there would be an interest by many gardeners who would gladly purchase this. As another reviewer wrote, you can carry it with you. Every plant that I have read about, or saw at a garden center, I have picked up this book and read about it and enjoy the beautiful drawings linked with each description. I love all of my garden books, but this one I would grab in a mad rush if my house caught fire. It is that valuable to me.

This book was a gift in 1986 and it is by far the most useful and used in my reference library. It is illustrated and covers a scope of plants rarely found in one volume. It includes trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs, annuals, etc. If you can aquire a copy of it, you won't be sorry. It is also small and easy to carry to garden shops and as a field guide.

I read this book years ago and found it unspeakably sad and haunting. I remember it as if I read it yesterday. An uncommon and insightful view of a white boy and the last of a group of native people that is treated with beautiful sensitivity. Recommended hightly.

PRACTICAL COMMON-SENSE ON LIVING WITH COPD

THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!

To all who contributed to this fine book, my undying gratitude!

When first diagnosed with COPD, all I wanted to do was research, research, research! The more I read, the more frustrated I became - that is until I located Courage and Information. This book is so down-to-earth! And it is filled with prospectives of not only a physician (with no medical "jargon"), a psychiatrist (without all the normal "stuff") and...can you believe it?...A PATIENT. How unusual to find a book written, at least in part, from the patient's prospective. What a great idea! Like I said earlier, just good, practical, common-sense information.

Even my pulmonologist agrees that it is the best resource material he has seen! And as far as I'm concerned, that's the best recommendation of all!

It really WILL help me to live a better, more fulfilling life. It will help you too. But you've got to read it first. You'll be glad you did.

I KNOW I AM.

If you or someone you love has been given the diagnosis of COPD, you may be asking, What now? Is there anything that can be done? Is there hope? The answer is, Yes! Life can be good with COPD and this book is a most valuable resource for the COPD patient, caregiver, and health care professional.

As a respiratory therapist working in Pulmonary Rehab I see that patients who learn about their disease and how to cope with the changes it brings live healthier, happier lives. They know that education, exercise, and support as well as a positive attitude are so important.

Courage and Information for Life with COPD is not only your map to learning, among other things, about finding a great specialist, taking breathing medications, using supplemental oxygen if needed, and finding help and support in your community. It is the story of a lady who has experienced the devastation of the diagnosis and not only lives, but thrives with COPD! Jo-Von Tucker's search for knowledge has helped her to move from the role of patient / victim to that of person / survivor. You must know that you do not have to face COPD alone! When reading Courage and Information you will surely say, That's me. Jo-Von's been through some of the same things that I'm going through.

There are so many things you can do to help yourself. Changed as it may be, you can live a rich and full life, even with COPD. Courage and Information willl help you find the way.

Revealing Account of Content in the Digital Age

Review Date: 2001-11-09
This book reveals the true nature of the nearly tectonic shift in the landscape of content being caused by digital technology. Even as the editor of Digital TV magazine, I have not read a book that examines, in such a penetrating manner, and with such a dazzling collection of expert voices, the depth of this dramatic change and what it now means. Further, it reveals the implications for the future of creating and distributing content in the digital age. This book is a must for anyone who cares about navigating the new world of digital content.

The Digital Revolution "Bible"

This is a "must buy" for anyone interested in the digital revolution that is changing the way we communicate. It explains how camcorders, Avids, and computers have changed video, movie-making, web streaming, and how to become part of it. "Digital content" is really what video, TV and movies have become. You can re-use your video and audio in many different ways to better serve clients or create original programming. The book explains what's going on very clearly. Digital video is really computer data, so it's cheaper and easier to work with than "regular" video. And the image is better! You can produce any type of show for less money than ever before, and you can do more things with your video; stream it on the web, put it on a DVD disc, project it as a movie, or re-use clips for other programs. Audio and sound techniques are also included.
"Creating Digital Content" starts off with a funny story by Firesign Theatre's Peter Bergman that makes you realize how much digital video and software has changed the way movies and TV are made. Then there's a really interesting section on what "digital" really means, which is the most concise definition I've ever read. Really helpful is the fact that they go into specifics about the best equipment available... over 25 chapters all about computers, Avids, camcorders, memory, etc. which can be used to make HDTV, corporate video, interactive TV and yes, feature films! Whether you're at a local TV station, a production house, a university A/V department, or you're an "A" list DGA feature film director, these are the NEW tools that you must be familiar with and ready to use.
You'll understand how computers, software and camcorders have become the new ways to make TV, streaming video, and big budget movies. Plus amazing interviews with the giants in the field, such as George Lucas and James Cameron.
I highly recommend "Creating Digital Cinema". It's an invaluable resource for anyone seriously interested in video, TV, streaming, and movies, and at the same it's a great read.

For a subject rife with hype and confusion, the editors bring together articles that are by turns surprising, authoritative and laugh-out-loud funny. For industries with notoriously short attention spans, the book reveals the lessons learned from decades of failure and success in Interactive TV and digital TV and gives roadmaps to the future.

An excellent read- which together with the authors first book, got me hooked on sea paddling. Not just a descriptive dairy of a journey around the coast of Ireland- but a great story of the people he met and the adventures he got into. In my view, the only sea kayaking book which is better is Blazing Paddles also by Brian Wilson

This is a wonderfully athmospheric book of solo kayak travel around the wild and windswept coast of Ireland. Brian experiences whirlwinds, friendly dolphins (photos included), pirates and meets many unusual and friendly people on his 1200 mile trip. Experience the Irish weather and coastal communities as they really are. A really enjoyable read.

An enjoyable account of Wilson's epic journey around the Emerald Isle. Fascinating background info on his compulsion to tour and his quest for sponsorship, followed by a vividly written account of the trip itself, including abduction by "pirates", the theft and return of his kayak and an unforgettable encounter with Fungie the dolphin. The author's genuine affection for Ireland and its fascinating culture permeates the book, and he includes snippets of history and myth that make the towns and islands he passes come to life. There are many laugh-out-loud anecdotes and encounters that you will feel compelled to read out loud to your spouse/roommate/dog. Wilson is an accomplished adventurer and a talented writer as well.

A Harsh Portrait

Review Date: 2006-12-23
An excellent work, it paints a harsh portrait of de Gaulle. A brave man with physical courage to go, he was possibly one of the greatest military thinkers in history. But he was vain, socially and politically unskilled, and an extremely poor judge of those on whom he depended to fulfill his ambitions: Churchill and, especially, Roosevelt.

Unable to gauge these two, or to assess their intentions from their side of the table, he stumbled from miscalculation to miscalculation. Only the greater mistakes of others like Giraud and the fact that most of France was sidelined by occupation and collaboration gave him the opportunities he used and these none too successfully.

Worse for de Gaulle, he could not see, as Roosevelt did so clearly, that post war France would have no greater status than a large U.S. state. Roosevelt toyed with de Gaulle as he would have toyed with any the state governor hopeful seeking his attention. De Gaulle neither understood this nor forgave it. Neither has France.

Although De Gaulle's entries have the ring of memoirs written after the event, they may well have been spoken.
Fateful moments tend to evoke grandeur of speech, especially in French parlance.
The General has always been a reference for Middle East scholars and politicians alike ...........

Jean Lacouture is a great writer, and I love to read his books.

Review Date: 2000-04-05
This is an excellent volume on the life of the great French Leader. This book chronicles the early years including DeGaulle's time as a German Prisoner of War during World War I. The book concludes with DeGaulle's triumphant return to Paris after the liberation in 1944 and is hailed as a national hero. While DeGaulle is really a controversial world figure, he is still a person of great historical importance in the world and France in particular. This book is a great read and is well researched and presented. A must read for anyone who wants to know about the life of Charles DeGaulle.

This is an excellent book. I read it in one night, couldn't put it down and have since passed it on to friends to read. I have been battling depression for over 10 years now. It truly is a day to day battle. You can see how the author has grown through the experiences in his life. He has so much respect & love for his family, which I admire. For someone to come out on top after going thru all he went thru is truly amazing. I am so happy to hear that he is even off meds. I hope someday I can do the same. Great job Brian! Words cannot express enough. Love, Trish (Andreas friend)

This book is really awesome. It is a very personal story that will not only captivate you, but will also provide comfort if you have ever dealt with even a hint of depression in your own life. The author really exposes himself in this book by taking what started out as a suicide note to his son, to a book loaded with interesting life lessons and personal experiences. An awesome, easy to read book that will captivate you from the second you open it until it is read to completion. Well worth buying and adding to your personal library to be referenced over the years. Also, 100% of the proceeds go to a great cause as well!

This is my book. I never intended to publish it, as it is a very personal look into my life and my illness. However, I was asked to publish this to help those suffering from depression and give insight to those who love someone who may be struggling with depression. 100% of my royalties are going to a charity my friends and I started to help those struggling financially due to catastrophic illness and injury named "The True Measure Foundation".

Thank you for your support!

The book is great, and a "must have" for those who seek a better understanding of personality and its disorders.
The authors not only provide the reader with the know-how, but also an enthralling overview of the history of each personality disorder. By going back to some of the old case studies, the authors did allow me to notice how personality disorders have evolved in the centuries. However, I have also learned that many of the signs of each cluster of PPDD were already described in ancient history.
Apart these cultural connotations, the book is a very helpful hint for those working with patients suffering from obstinate
and "hard-to-treat" personality disorders.
Great book, worth each penny paid.

. . . is another man's path to riches, professional prestige, and social control.

If you want to know about the latest fads and superstitions in America's favorite quackery, then this is a great source. You'll miss out on a few things, such as how psychiatrists had epileptics imprisoned in "colonies" just a few decades ago. Epilepsy was, we were informed by Harvard psychiatrists, proof of pathological criminality. You will also not read about how homosexuals, after long being persecuted by psychiatrists (electroconvulsive therapy, insulin schock, lobotomy, etc.) were suddenly declared well, and about how people who dislike homosexuals then were afflicted with a "mental illness" called "homophobia." You won't learn how it is that psychiatrists "knew" that people contracted peptic ulcers because they could't handle stress until the bacteria was isolated that actually causes such ulcers. You won't learn this because psychiatrists don't like to get hemmed in by history, or science, or ethical considerations. The authors discretely ignore the fact that no autopsy has ever revealed a person to have had "schizophrenia" or that any disease revealed to have a genuine organic cause is removed from psychiatry and given to physicians, such as neurologists, who deal with real illnesses.

But do not fret. This book is directly in the psychiatric mainstream. It presents all the categories, classifications, modalities, complexes, and "treatments" just as if they were the product of actual science. It's as complex and convincing as an elaboration on astrology or phrenology. Like any good pseudoscientific tract, it is so splendidly dense and pretentious that it will not lack for credulous readers.

Yesterday's forgotten "cause" and "treatment" for "schizophrenia" is replaced by the hottest new thing. Every coercive treatment applied to involuntary subjects who don't accept that they are in any way "sick" is deftly rationalized. A century from now this will stand as one of the most fascinating compendia of quackery American has produced.

The best book on personality disorders on the market !!!

There are few books in psychology that are as comprehensive in scope and detail as Dr. Millon's book. The book provides a solid, integrative theory of personality and personality disorders that can be used not only in research, but also clinical practice by psychologists from any theoretical orientation. Because it is so comprehensive, the book is especially useful for students. The first section of the book (approximately 200 pgs.) is dedicated to laying down a foundation for the study of personality disorders -- the issues that it entails and a concise (yet, detailed) review of various personality theories. Dr. Millon then presents a rational, integrated theory of personality that is the foundation of his integrated biopsychosocial approach to personality. The rest of the book is dedicated to a detailed examination of the DSM-IV personality disorders. This single book can serve as a primary text for any advanced course in personality. Whether one aggrees with Dr. Millon's theory (and few can disagree with it completely once they understand it's comprehensive and integrated nature), this book is one that anybody who deals with the personality disorders MUST have on their bookshelf.

I like reading business books, but some of them are quite dry. That was one of the best aspects of this book. The selling strategies are outstanding. Beyond good. But wow! I don't think I have ever read a business book that was as much fun to read as this one. Each chapter and key point is introduced with a short story from history that is well written and relevant to the point. I felt myself wanting to skip ahead and just read all the history examples. The DNA Selling Method is unquestionably unique. The fact that it is so simple does rather beg the question "why has someone not come up with this before?"
It is designed specifically for the modern high-tech sales environment and I had my entire sales force read the book and go through the training. The difference has been staggering and the training is still fresh in our minds almost 12 months later. It has been just amazing watching my sales team turn into "great listeners" and the imformation they extract from our clients has sent our close ratios through the roof. We are now able to predict our quarterly performance to within 5%, which means we now have one system that enables us to predict where we will finish. This has led to increased credibility for our team and a much more confident management team. If you are a sales professional or manager, this is an excellent methodology to implement (it is also very amusing and a fast and easy read).
