Although the book lives up to its title, there are plenty of secrets, undocumented features and tips offered in the book, mostly Windows 98 Secrets Gold is a review of stuff most users will already know. In its current form, the book should be published in 2 volumes because it is quite unwieldy as a single volume making it difficult to sit and read. On the other hand, if the editors stuck to the title and only printed the secrets then the book would be much shorter and in my opinion, more useful. Secrets, undocumented features and tips are identified in the text margins with an icon and one only need flip through the book to realize that if you were to distill out the non iconized text, then the book would be much more compact. Curiously, the book keeps making distinctions between the features in Windows 98 and Windows 3.1 with hardly a nod to Windows 95. Still, like the authors state in the introduction, if even one tip is useful, you probably will have gotten your money's worth.

An intense and authentic remembrance.

Review Date: 1999-08-04
The author of this book is Brian Boru Dunne (1878-1962). The editors of this remarkable memoir want to point out that it is unlike anything we might expect from one writer memorializing another. Brian Dunne was a very young man from an Irish-American family, who had recently studied in a Belgian college with princes of the aristocratic de Croy family, met Gissing by accident in Siena, and then spent several months with him in Rome. The Roman period was an unusually happy one for Gissing, who entertained H.G. Wells and socialized with many important people there, including such other writers as Arthur Conan Doyle and Ernest Hornung. As Gissing's frequent companion, Dunne wrote it all down in his diary, preserving a record of their daily escapades and quotidian conversations in the fresh, unguarded manner of a young man whose mind was uncluttered by any adult protocol, social philosophy, or professional agenda. He went on to become the city editor of the Santa Fe New Mexican, met and interviewed most of the leading figures of the day, and wrote several memoirs which will be published in due time. In Gissing's case, he remained faithful to his diary and produced a lively, vivid, and patently authentic account aof a man who was regarded as one of the leading novelists of the time. Paul F. Mattheisen

A valuable addition to Gissing biography.

As a long-time student of George Gissing's work and one of his first biographers, I was delighted to read this vivid and perceptive first-hand account of his activities and opinions. Few people who knew Gissing personally have left memoirs of him, and Dunne's is certainly the fullest up-close portrait that we have. He describes Gissing's writing and eating habits, his attention to clothes, his reactions to Italy and his people, and his opinions of other writers, and all this helps to clarify the novelist's character. I especially appreciated the excellent informative notes, which provided much needed background, and brought Dunne himself forward as an interesting and significant figure.

A great read even if you don't know Gissing

I stumbled onto George Gissing two years ago through his travel classic "By The Ionian Sea: Notes on a Ramble Through Southern Italy." I had not read much late-Victorian writing, except for brief forays into Thomas Hardy. Now I have found a new champion -- George Gissing -- and am discovering that post-industrial era through his works. In this process, I discovered Dunne's delightful memoir and was drawn to it because it recalled a time in Gissing's life when he seem most happiest: his 1897-1898 tour of Southern Italy, the setting for "By the Ionian Sea." Dunne's memoir -- wonderfully edited to fully explain all references, from obvious to obscure -- can be read on more than one level. First, it gives a vivid recounting, through an innocent young journalist's eyes that miss little, of a golden three or four months or so in Rome, hobnobbing with Gissing and two other Victorian writers, H.G. Wells and Arthur Conan Doyle. It also can be seen as "a work in progress" where the reader can examine how Dunne, by now in middle age and an accomplished writer in his own right, moved from diary through drafts of memoirs. And particularly important for the Gissing enthusiast is the introduction, which puts the era in perspective and paints a vivid picture of the players in Dunne's Roman holiday.

A new perspective on Gissing, relaxed in Italy

Out of left field, from the editors of The Collected Letters of George Gissing, comes a refeshing new view of Gissing--plus some charming turn-of-century Americana. The oddly successful combinaton comes about in this way. When the English novelist, desperate to escape for a time from his miserable marriage, visited Italy in 1897-98, he met there a 20-year old American traveller named Brian Boru Dunne. The precocious young man, who would later become a journalist in Santa Fe, New Mexico, kept a diary of their conversations over several months, recording Gissing's opinions on literature, modern and ancient Rome, and everything else that interested them. Years later, he wrote p some of his notes. The diary is lost, but the editors have used Dunne's surviving materials to create a fascinating portrait that shows us a more unbuttoned and humorous Gissing than we knew. Because Dunne is worthy of interest in himself, they have seen fit to include some other pieces: William Jennings Bryan's unconsciously hilarious rules for oratory; Cardinal Gibons' recipe for longevity; and an interview with Mark Twain written by Twain himself. Their 40-page introduction to Dunne and Gissing is unexpectedly fascinating. The voluminous footnotes explain so much, and in such style, that they are an integral part of the reading experience. This beautifully produced, amusing, and illuminating miscellany should attract all Gissing readers, and they will be rewarded by more than they bargained for.

What makes this particular volume of Lang's collection remarkable is its collection of quite unknown stories. While we all love "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Cinderella", there is nothing wrong with venturing for more complex stories, and that is what this volume provides.

I have not researched these, but I am under the impression that many of these stories were actually "written". I'm not sure how everyone will take that threat to oral folklore, but good fantasy is good fantasy, and I enjoy reading a fairy tale-esque story with extra complexity that still holds the same aura.

The illustrations are gorgeous, as usual, and display intricacies that fit the stories superbly.

Perhaps a more wild collection, but for that I love it all the more.

A bright multicultural selection

With tales such as The Blue Mountains, The Cat and the Mouse in Partnership, The Dragon and His Grandmother, Fairer-than-a-Fairy, The Flower Queen's Daughter, The Glass Axe, How To Tell a True Princess, and many others how can anyone not find this book fun to read? Once again, Lang edits a book full of fairy tales from many lands that will entertain children and adults. The black and white illustrations are also superb.

When I was younger my Mom used to read me a book until I fell asleep. As I grew older, I began to read myself to sleep. As things changed only one thing stayed constant, my favorite books are still Andrew Lang's Fairy books. The Yellow Fairy book is a collection of 48 fairy tales written the way they were supposed to be written. Each tale ranges in length anywhere from a couple of pages up to about 20. The tales are fairly easy reads, but they don't lose any of their appeal. The book also contains several wonderful illustrations.
Some of the stories include: The Six Swans, Story of the Emperor's New Clothes, The Crow, The Cat and the Mouse in Partnership, The Three Brothers, The Magic Ring, How to Tell a True Princes, Thumbelina, and more.

I would suggest reading this book, I love it!

I borrowed my husbands copy of this book, not expecting to enjoy it (I'm not much into Baseball), but I was CAPTIVATED!! Baseball aside this is a human story, one the author approachs with the softness and sensativity of young William's mother....I cried and then was enthralled with the ultimate victory...against all odds... of the 1940 Reds. This should be part of Oprah's book club. I just wish the cover had the author's picture on it.....I just wonder if he has kind eyes.

This book was both an exciting read and an informative picture of pre-war Americana. From the Deacon to the Duke I just couldn't put it down. By the time the story reaches its inevitable climax....the 1940 World Series...you not only feel like you are there, but as if you are part of the team. Lets Go Reds! I can't wait for the next tome from this great new writer.

Excellent book...well researched

If you are a baseball fan, you know the stories of the big-named players from the 1940s. This is the story of a team of not-so-famous players who pulled off a World Series Championship. in 1940. If you enjoy baseball history, you will enjoy this book. You get know the stories behind a group of rather ordinary guys -- a great snapshot of life in the US just before World War II,

It was actually fun to see how much I could accomplish in Access in such a short time. Now everyone in the office thinks I'm an Access wizard.

I've got a LOT of Mr. Underdahl's books in my library, and have come to expect excellent coverage of whatever topics he writes on. I know how to use Access, but I'm not quite that up-to-speed on creating forms and reports and using the Query tool properly - this book fills in the blanks and shows you how maximize your time and financial investments in Access. The author also does a great job of showing you how to use the Access tools with other Office applications (like Word and Excel). The book is a great one-stop-source for Access 2007 forms/reports/query tool - if you use Access often, this book is one of those resources you'll always find yourself reaching out for... a great reference.

Also, this book is loaded with tips, notes and reminders that really make sense and offer great ideas to manipulate the data and produce the perfect report. Thank you for making that task easier and less stressful.

I totally agree to Dr. Boswell's comment on this book. I consider it to be the best book in acute pain management. About 4 years ago, when I was doing my Pain Management Fellowship in the Dept. of Anesthesiology at Univ. of Michigan Medical Center, I struggled hard for a quite a while during my rotation in the Acute Pain Service, as my residency training was in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation(PM&R), rather than Anesthesiology and there had been no acute pain exposure at all during my PM&R residency. I was fortunate to be accepted as the 1st non-anesthesiology pain management fellow in the Dept. of Anesthesiology, Univ. of Michigan. Although there were a few pain medicine text books(much thicker and heavier) available at that time that covered some aspects of acute pain, most of them were incomplete or fragmented, not to mention they were way too bulky. I struggled until I found this handy book of Acute Pain Management(2nd Edition, 2001). It is comprehensive and concise. It contains thorough discussion on opioid pharmacology, local anesthetic pharmacology, route of opioid administration, IV PCA, epidural PCA and discussion of other analgesics used in acute pain settings. It is pocket sized so that I could put it in my white coat when doing my round. With the help of this book, I found myself catching up quickly during the rest of my acute pain services. I highly recommend this book to any residents or fellows rotating in acute pain service. It is also a good resource for all other physicians including surgeons who need to provide service for post op pain control.

This little pocket sized book is a wonderful resource for practicing physicians (and physicians who need more practice). We use the book as a textbook for the first and second year anesthesiology residents rotating on pain medicine. The attendings learn a thing or two as well. The handy, thoughtful questions at the end of the book provide a useful study guide and testing tool for the rotation.

The content is accurate and the writing is consise and clear. The chapters are well-organized and include a list of topics at the beginning. The chapters are just the right size to get the basics quickly. In addition, there is information that is difficult to get easily elsewhere, even in a huge tome.

I am ordering an additional ten books for the residency program today. Can't beat the price of about [$$$] per copy.

I have a long shelf full of southwest guidebooks. For the Las Vegas area, Beffort's book is the best choice for people unfamiliar with the desert. It has a good mix of easy and difficult hikes.

My sister and her husband recently visited Vegas while I was out of town. He was at a convention; she wanted to see something other than casinos. I turned her loose with a few suggestions and Beffort's book. She did three of the trips in the Spring Mountains and didn't get lost, uncharacteristic for her. The credit goes to good directions in the book.

It has ideas for hikes of various lengths and difficulties and as well as information on conservation and safety. It includes great maps and photos and lists areas not found in most other guides. If you want to explore areas within a 3 hour drive of Las Vegas, this is the most comprehensive book I have found. I highly recommend it!
