This is a must read for students in junior high and high school. It changes the way they would walk through the teen years. Parents, we aren't exempt from doing hard things either. Read this to see how we can still impact our world and change the way our children process the adolescent years.

Excellent book.

I've just finished reading, Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations written by the little brothers of Josh Harris famous himself for writing I Kissed Dating Goodbye. Overall the book is outstanding.

Alex and Brett Harris talk about a counterculture of youth determined to be a part of "A Teenage Rebellion against Low Expectations."

"If you look back over history you'll find ... movements that were started (or fueled) by young people. The problem is, most of these movements were actually revolts against God-established authority (like parents, church , or government), and many were ultimately crushed or twisted toward another end.
All those failed revolutionary attempts are a discouraging record as far as teen efforts go, but not for rebelutionaries. We're not rebelling against institutions or even against people. Our uprising is against a cultural mind-set that twists the purpose and potential of the teen years and threatens to cripple our generation. Our uprising won't be marked by mas riots and violence, but by millions of individual teens quietly choosing to turn the low expectations of our culture upside down." (DHT p25.)

I'm not going to lay out a lengthy review what I will say is this: I plan on buying a copy for my nieces and nephews this Christmas.

I keep buying it...

I've bought at least four copies of this book... every time I get one, one of my kids runs off with it and I can't finish it. They love it - and they've been challenged by it. I love it - I'm most of the way through it. Now if I can just get my latest copy back from my wife...

Daniel Handler is one of the best children's authors around. He has a turn of phrase unique to himself and he treats children as young adults. This is literature for the young and is a worthwhile addition to your library. I bought these to read for myself, and am now waiting to introduce them to my children.

Sometimes guardians can't be trusted! The Series of Unfortunate Events will prove that to you. These books are for ages 8 and up. These books couldn't be better if you ask me. They are some of my favorite books and I have every one that goes in the series. Each book takes the kids to a new guardian's house each time. The kids end up in a new towns, and cities, mills, and schools often. When Sunny, Violet, and Klaus Baudelaire were at the beach their parents were at home and then a friend of their parents walks up to them on the beach and tells them that their mansion burnt down and their parents died. Nobody knew how the fire started, but it wasn't caused by something, it was caused by someone. Count Olaf burnt their house down and killed their parents because he was a relative and wanted custody of the kids only because he wanted the enormous fortune that their parents left behind. Count Olaf did get custody. But when the kids told someone what he was doing to them and the police found out, they got a new guardian. Count Olaf then disguised himself so that he could kill or injure all of the kid's new guardians. He wanted to get the kids and their enormous fortune back. But you have to read the series to find out what happens next in these books filled with suspense

well, they started good

I like these @ first, but then I just stopped reading them, and I have no idea why.

Klaus is the middle child in this trio. He is amazingly smart. Violet can build inventions out of anything! And the youngest person in this trio is a girl named Sunny, who has amazingly sharp front teeth.

I love the plot of these books. Count Olaf is a great character and I love to hate him!

I juat have to read the twelfth book and then I've read them all. I definetely plan to read the next book in this series.

The books by Lemonity Snicket are wonderful. They are stories that keep you reading. I have enjoyed reading them. They are stories about three young children who lost their parents in a fire and are sent to different places to live. The first place was with a distant relative....who is Count Olaf. From then on there have been many more places they have had to live and exciting but unfortunate events have happened to them. I would recommend you read them from the first story called, "A Bad Beginning" to the last one which is book #12. I have yet to read that one and do not know what it is called...but they are wonderful stories and will keep you going.

Many books have been written about the horror and monster film genres over the years, but few have been written by fans specifically for fans. That's what makes "Horror 101" so special and unique -- as you read the essays contained within you can't help but share the enthusiasm that the writers have for the films, even the ones you've never seen. The books runs the gamut from silents like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" and "The Golem" to modern classics like "An American Werewolf in London" (a personal favorite) and "Ringu" -- and everything in between. No matter whether you're a neophyte just getting into the genre or a horror fanatic with dozens of films under your belt, you'll find plenty of reasons to pull a chair and audit a course in "Horror 101."

This book is an absolute must-read for horror film fans of any stripe. It covers everything from silent classics to more modern films in a series of conversational essays written by knowledgeable genre fans from all over the world and from a wide variety of backgrounds. It is, in short, kind of like hanging out with a ton of horror fans talking about their favorite movies. There are (as to be expected) spoilers throughout the discussions, so anyone who hasn't seen any of the films is advised to watch them before reading those films' particular chapters. As a guidebook and listing of horror movie essentials, it's hard to beat, giving the novice horror fan a solid foundation of classic films. As a book *by* horror fans *for* horror fans, there's simply no better book out there.

Great 'lil book of horror!

What makes "Horror 101" so good, for me being a huge fan of the genre, is that it doesn't leave out much of the favorites and even much of the classic unknown films that so often happens with books written about this subject. Here, we jump right into the mix of such classics as "Halloween", "The Shining", and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", etc. It even includes such obscure films as "Deathdream" and "Them."

The author gives a thorough review of each the films listed and politely doesn't give away much of the twists. It is a must read for us horror fans...and people researching the horror.

Anyone who considers himself a serious fan of the horror genre would do well to pick up this book. Probably the best book of this type I've read in a long time!

Horror 101 is the ideal book for the lonely horror fan. We poor, misunderstood wretches who have no one close by with whom we can share our love of malevolent spirits, monsters run amok, and the undead in their manifold forms, hungering for living human flesh and blood! (Sorry, I got a little carried away there.) The articles in the book, ruminations on over a hundred of the greatest horror films, are written by horror fans from all walks of life, and are both entertaining and informative. It's like having a great group of knowledgeable friends always available to talk scary cinema. Bravo to all of the contributors and likewise to Dr. AC for compiling a terrific and unique collection. I highly recommend it to all horror and film enthusiasts, and can't wait for volume 2.

When a Gingerbread Boy is peeked at when not supposed to, he becomes Gingerbread Baby! This is the main idea of Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett. This story is about a boy named Matti in Switzerland. This is a great children's book. I strongly recommend the book.

A boy named Matti decides it's a perfect day for gingerbread. But, when his mother tells him not to peek, he does anyways. Then out pops ... not the Gingerbread Man but ... The Gingerbread Baby! The Ginger bread Baby runs away and everyone chases him. It's very funny.

I think that the Gingerbread Baby is the best character. He's the best character because he is my favorite character. The main characters are, Matti, The Gingerbread Baby, and the animals. The writing style is great. The story is very easy to read. It's a great book.

I really like the illustrations. They really tell the story. Some of the pictures are funny. The Gingerbread Baby even has his own little saying like the Gingerbread Man. One saying is "Catch me if you can!"

The story was great and funny. I really enjoyed the book. I really hope you like the book too. I recommend the book for grades k-5. This book can be for any age, boy or girl.

I really feel like the odd one out, but I wasn't too impressed with this book. Sure, the illustrations are gorgeous...By no means am I knocking Ms. Brett's skill here, but I just find the text a little long winded and ackward. Maybe it's the way I'm reading it...? It just doesn't seem too terribly well-written to me.

James Marshall's pics, not Jan Brett's!

Review Date: 2008-09-24
First of all, Amazon.com seems to have screwed up somehow and most of the reviews here are for "The Owl and the Pussycat" illustrated by Jan Brett which transfers this classic tale into a Caribbean setting bursting with colors. I collect versions of this poem so I have that book too and it is truly beautiful. But the one on this page was illustrated by James Marshall and according to the afterword by Maurice Sendak, this was some of his last work before his death. So please don't buy this one based on the reviews, this is not the Jan Brett book.

The pictures of this book are faithful enough to the story and whimsical, done in a little more cartoonish style than Jan Brett's realistic ones. They are full of subtle deadpan humor, especially if you look close enough and read between the lines. For example, what disturbs me greatly, the Pussycat changes colors in this book!!! First she is gray with stripes, then orange with stripes, then grey again, and once the Owl sings to a small guitar she turns white and remains white throughout the rest of the book. What is this??? Is this supposed to imply that the Owl ditched the original Cat for some other kitty while on board the beautiful pea green boat (which is a ship reminiscent of the Titanic, by the way)? Also, the Pussycat looks like a Tomcat in drag. Is this a deliberate allusion to Some Like It Hot? No wonder the Owl looks a little apprehensive in most pictures, rolling his eyes and probably thinking of ways to get out of this stew.

The poem, of course, is a classic... and the reason why I collect these books.

ISBN 0399231935 - A quick glance through the pages of the board book edition from G. P. Putnam's Sons didn't give me high hopes for this book, but I have - once again - been surprised by what can work in a board book!

The owl and the pussycat hop in a boat and head out to sea, where Owl proposes in song. They buy a ring from a pig and are married by a turkey... and that, you have to know, hardly tells the tale at all.

In few, very well-chosen, words, Lear's story can hardly be done justice in a simple recap. Jan Brett's illustrations are just slightly less difficult to put into words - the detail initially seemed to me to be a negative: young children tend to like simpler, less busy, illustrations. I think this is one time they will happily learn to love the busy-ness. The remarkable detail of everything, from Owl's feathers to the individual fronds on the palm trees, adds gorgeous depth to the book.

In addition, a second love story - told only in pictures - takes place, courtesy of Brett. Pussycat carries a yellow fish (we're going to call that one a girl) in a bowl onto the boat and the fish is seen on every page. Underwater, another yellow fish is seen "talking" to other underwater animals and each one he talks to joins him as he follows his trapped-in-a-bowl love, until Owl and Pussycat unknowingly have an underwater parade following them. Is everyone eventually with the one they love? Of course they are! Very well-worth picking up for your short person!!

What a beautiful version of Edward Lear's poem. I've always been a James Marshall fan, but this book is absolute tops for his illustrations. The colors are glorious, the characters, as his always are, deftly and lovingly handled. I understand that it was his last work, and it's a shame that it is out of print. Buy it, save it, and pass it around.

No honey or money, but you'll find riches anyway

Review Date: 2007-05-23
Jan Brett's Caribbean-inspired illustrations for the classic Edward Lear poem are teeming with life, and the effect is stunning. The colors, textures, and shapes are a visual treat. Each page also has a different pattern of "straw" border, adorned with a different tropical flower.

The pictures overflow with detail, to the point where there's even a sub-story (pardon the pun) involving two yellow fish.

I didn't give it the full 5 stars because the way the text is broken up across spreads makes it difficult to read the poem with any kind of flow, and because some of Brett's admittedly gorgeous illustrations could (and perhaps should) have had more of a connection to the text. For one notable example -- there's no pot of honey on the boat, and we never get a look at the money wrapped up in the five-pound note!

But there's no denying the beauty of the illustrations, and the Caribbean theme works surprisingly well. This is a great book for anyone -- for newcomers to the splendid silliness of the poem as well as for old fans of the poem who are looking for an edition with fabulous illustrations.

I have already owned this book for more than four years and could not be happier with it. I have used it extensively mainly as a reference for the uncovered/undocumented topics in Swing, Concurrency and JDBC programming; and I must say it has always surprised me by providing sound information to complex concepts covered only in a very shallow way by other Java books. I keep up to date by buying the latest books in Java JSE and J2EE programming but still, it is only with Brett's book that I end up finding the best answers. It is very compelling its excellent coverage of good OO design in Java and programming style guidelines.

Please do not fool yourself as I almost did when I was quickly browsing through its pages before deciding to buy. My first impression was that this book wasn't going to be very deep, while covering so many different topics e.g. Java Architecture, Swing, Javadoc, JDBC, Remote, Concurrency, etc. but Brett's nail hitting approach is to leave out the trivialities and get to the core complex issues that make all the difference developing real-life complex Java applications.

e.g. today sunday 29.10.2006 I just could not take anymore not fully understanding how GridBagLayout works. I needed the added flexibility over the other simpler but very limited Layout managers. After my frustrated attempt of reviewing other three Java Swing-only up-to-date books, voila! there was Brett's in my bookshelf as always waiting to provide me with the best explanation and examples.

I very much look forward his updated new edition of this excellent almost never outdated resource.

The title of the book is very well honoured. It is IMHO a must have for any serious professional Java developer.

This book certainly covers many important topics in a clear and well written manner. You will find excellent and very clear advice to follow. My only gripe with this book is its rather lengthy treatment of Swing. Swing is covered in enough detail to give you a flavor, but that's all. In total the coverage of swing takes up a lot of pages, and makes the book a bit too thick to read comfortably in bed. Without the Swing part I think it would have been possible to have this book as a bedside companion.

This story shows the kindness of children when un-blemished by societies views. The adults are tarnished with opinions based on years of living in a beautiful town. But one asks the question. Who is really beautiful? Fritz with his shaggy mane and brave kind heart, or the horses with gracefull necks and hearts of fear without sacrifice?

Once long ago there was a walled city known for its beautiful horses, and so a law was passed out that only the most beautiful were allowed in the city, not even a scruffy pony who very much wanted to look and be grand. Suddenly, the bridge breaks. Will Fritz be able to save the children? The plot is colorful and imaginative. The setting is just outside the walled city with ponds, fields, and roads. Fritz is the main character of the book. He is sure-footed, kind, and always willing to work. The men and ladies mock poor Fritz because he is scruffy. The children absolutely adore Fritz but are scared of their own horses who prance around and show themselves off. Jan Brett, the author of Fritz and the Beautiful Horses, was born December 1, 1949, in Hingham, Massachusetts. Fritz and the Beautiful Horses was her first published book ever. Today she lives in Norwell, Massachusetts, an historic area on the south shore, and spends her summers up in the mountains where she works hard on her books. Jan Brett wrote a boat-load of other books including Hedgie's surprise. I thought the book Fritz and the Beautiful Horses was great and would recommend it to everyone.

I love the illustrations in this book, and my horse-crazy daughters enjoy them too.

I just think that the very end of the book [SPOILER - the citizens welcome Fritz into their town at the end because of him saving their children] wasn't handled the way I would have. It felt like an implicit ratification of the townspeople's attitude - still only the beautiful horses allowed in town, and Fritz is allowed because he worked so hard. I'd have preferred something about the people realizing that the heart matters more, or that they were wrong about what's most important (exterior vs. interior beauty). I don't think it would have needed to be heavy-handed.

As it is, we don't read it that often and when we do, I find myself modifying the last few words. Or starting a discussion about being kind etc.

My 3-year-old loves this book and so do I. I've been reading it to her for over a year and it's always been a favorite. It has great illustrations and a clever, original story.

Jan Brett's story, "The Hat", is a real wonderous book! This book is a wonderful well-written story! With breath-taking pictures, and a beautiful story line, this book will have you smiling all the way through it!
In the story, a little hedgehog named Hedgie finds a stocking on the ground. Thinking it is a stylish winter cap, he wears it on his head, but it gets stuck on his sharp pointy quills! He goes around to show off his newfound hat, but gets laughed at by the animals each time. Poor miserable Hedgie goes off to be by himself. When the "hat's" owner retrieves it back from Hedgie, a wonderous and helarious thing happens! You'll have to read the book to find out!
The realistic pictures and side drawngs complete this wonderful picture book. For ages 6 and up, this book is another one of Brett's adored picture books that will have you reading it over and over again!

Love Jan Brett... This one actually has two stories going, one in the main pages and one in the insets along the side, then they come together in the end. Fabulous!

I love Jan Brett's work: A modern day Shirley Hughes, I think. 'The Hat' is as beautiful and charming stories as any of her stories - and with wintertime feel-good-factor.

Not as good as The Mitten

Get The Mitten instead, if you don't own it yet. This one is a little on the tedious side. You can see exactly where it's going from the very beginning and it doesn't have the peek-a-boo/sneeze joke in it that my daughter loves so much in The Mitten. To be honest, this is one of those books we have in our bookcase for variety and one of those ones where I skip parts just to get to the end of it.

Wonderful, for those of us who are Packer-backers and even for those who aren't. Good history, honesty about his addiction.

This is a good book ,the problem came from the fixation they put on his painkillers addiction and the problems it bring with his wife and teammates. You also have a lot of details about the health problems this addiction caused to him,a little bit like "Drugs is bad to you,see what it do to me."His wife almost let him down for that, his teammates are tired of him asking for Vicodin and others painkillers. The two or three first paragraphs talk about that, but chapter after chapter they come back with it.The book talk to much about his "post popularity" life and not enough of him when he was unknown. His "post popularity" life are report in all the daily newspapers, that why I expect to learn more about Bret Favre before he was a star. They pass to fast on his teens years, his collegiate years. The reason to write a biography his to talk about the unknown parts of someone life, but in this book you just found what everybody read on the last five years newspapers. That a good but incomplete book.

As a Londoner, who learnt to appreciate American football at 21, I wanted background reading to enhance my enjoyment. I started by looking into favourite players of mine, so came this book!

I wanted to understand what goes on in players mind before a big game. How they react to the coach barking orders. How they conduct themselves on and off the field. This book helped me to do all these things and more. Favre is not a roboback, he is an individual with flair and creativity, which is why this book is so entertaining.

I seem to be able to climb right on into Brett's head, and into his personal life through the pages in this book, which is enlightening to say the least. We hear about his highs and lows, and he is frank about his addiction to Vicodin, and his relationships with players and coaches alike.

I think this book is for American Football fans only, which explains why this was my first Amazon purchase, (This book isn't in print in the UK) but for a fan of the Packers, or just a Football fan in general, you can do no wrong in buying this, which will no doubt increase your respect for the stress players endure every game.

Best book ever written!

First I want to say something about the book. It's great!! If your a true fan of the Packers and want to know about one of the teams, and NFLs greatest players, buy this book. It shows you the kind of person Favre is on and off the field. He takes you through the ups and downs of his life and career that have made him the person and player he is today. Now, for the other reviews I read before writing this one. What promted some numbnuts to write about the packers loss to St. Louis in the playoffs in a book review?? They must be a Bears fan! Another one decided to write that Brett and his family were (...) That's intelligent. I know when I go to read a review about a book that interests me, I want to have to wade through the garbage that idiots like that jerk take up space with. For those of you with a brain in your head, trust me, Farve: For The Record is a great read!!
