I found 'Backpacking and Trekking...' a worthwhile read. I've spent six years running tours into the Andes and this latest edition offered me some good tips on some great hikes. Like any guide of its kind some of the information is no longer accurate, but the Bolivia section was particularly useful, since it is the area I know least.

Good book, but needs updates

Fortunately, the daunting size of the book wasn't a factor. I used Backpacking... in 2000 mainly in Bolivia. I was disconcerted by the lack of updated information, but overall the maps and descriptions are very helpful. I spent three weeks in western Amboro National Park studying river otters and the impact of human presence in the area; I used Bradt's 1995 edition during a reconnaisance into the area two years ago, and found Jon Derksen's descriptions thorough and informative. Two tips--unbuckle your pack while fording rivers, and float your pack during deeper crossings were particularly insightful. What is more, the trip paved the way for the recent otter study. (Mr. Derksen, if you read this, I found the 'message in the bottle' you left in the crack in the 'cave'! Did you ever make it to the headwaters of the Macunucu?).

I found this guide useful, but ...

I used this book in Peru & Bolivia in August 1998, and it was useful, but there are better guides around, at least for Peru. I give it only three stars because it is unnecessarily large and inconvenient as a use-on-the-trail guide; the maps aren't very comprehensive; and the incidental information on flora, fauna, etc, is superficial.

Buy this guide with a grain of salt...

Although I've read negative reviews about the 1999 edition, over the past ten years I have used "Trekking and Backpacking in Peru and Bolivia" as a reliable source of information both for myself and friends. Sure, some of the details are outdated, but there isn't a travel guide out there where that isn't the case. What I like about the Bradt publication is that it rounds out the hiking experience, offering alternatives and interesting insights. I have found especially valuable the 1995 ed. section on Bolivian National Parks--the information provided a gateway to some amazing adventures I had in the Apolobamba (a must see) and Amboro National Park. I know Bolivia quite well, and can say that this book is an important addition to the Andean travelers backpack.

I have been using this book when trekking in P&B in 1996. I have found many treks (in Colca Canyon, Cordillera Real for example) to be erroneus and very outdated (15 years at least regarding Colca). I've checked later editions (but not this one) and they didn't change a thing What's good about this book is that it at least tells you were you can possibly trek, but be very carefull later and don't trust the book to much or you'll be in trouble

I would have liked to give this book 5 stars because many of the accounts written in it are priceless but I felt at times confused because the book is written in letters in a lot of parts and its easy to get lost in them, there were also many errors in the text that some how slipped through. Having said that the book was a true eye opener with many first hand accounts. Remy Schrijnen is a true hero but dont be fooled the book is just has much about his unit has it is about him and is written about him not a first person from him so dont expect a Forgotten Solder out of this one. Remy and his fellow Flemings were honorable men caught up in a bloody struggle for life and death and continued to fight on until two days after the war was over protecting civilians from the Russian hordes driving west only stopping when their ammo was finally finished. This book will shock many people with the accounts from the men serving has POW's and will anger you to their harsh treatment, these men were not Concentration camp workers but because of their SS brand they were treated like such. A Fair read to anyone interested in Hitler's Foreign volunteers.

Bit of a disappointment

I was disappointed with this book; it started out as a good read but then bogged down. The author tends to be repetitive, going over and over about how great a soldier Remy Schrijnen was without really saying much about what was going on or what he did. I finally got tired of it and started skimming through sections, then just put the book down. While I was disappointed overall, there are some sections and pictures of interest that may prove useful to dedicated students of lesser known German (SS) units and combat on the Eastern Front. At some point, I will probably pick it up again, gloss over certain sections and finish the book, but for now it will gather dust on the shelf.

This book is a comprehensive study of the Flemish volunteers in the German army. Most parts are very readable , but the personal reflections on the battle at Narva become a bit repetitive. Improvements would have been the use of maps. The action accounts are somewhat brief and lacking in detail (as often is the case with such war memoirs). But a good read.

I have been looking at many alternative methods for fighting cancers because I have found the allopathic method to not work on several people lately. Not to mention that the allopathic doctors missed some very obvious signs on 3 of the people
I found this book interesting and it seems that, given more recent scientific research information on grapes, that it might be something to incorporate into a cancer protocol when using natural methods.
I appreciated the book and enjoyed hearing the woman's story. I read in another review that she seemed to ramble on, but I felt the way the story was told was very honest and natural.

30 years ago I participated in the Grape Cure diet with a friend who had lymph cancer. After the removal of a lymph tumor, he developed cigar size tumors in the lymph glands under the arms and at the groin line. They completely disappeared after following the Grape Cure fast! Unfortunately my friend was not willing to stay on a raw foods diet, as indicated by the author, and within a year he was dead. I have never forgotten this book, and I was really please to see it was still available though written in 1920. It may not work for everyone, but if I had cancer, I would definately choose grapes over death. If you at all subscribe to "you are what you eat" then you will see the simple logic in purifying this way.

This book originally written in 1920s by Dr. Johanne Brandt is fantastic. Although the reason why red grape juice can cure cancers remained unknown for more than seven decades until 1997, the major anti-cancer ingredient in this grape is now known: a polyphenol called "resveratrol" (R3).

It inhibits a Tyr-kinase called Syk, which is essential for the activation of several oncogenic kinases such as PAK and AKT. Since PAK is essential for the growth of more than 70% of human cancers, red grape juice, red wine, R3 or its derivatives could cure these PAK-dependent cancers. It is also known now that R3 is useful for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as NF (neurofibromatosis), Alzheimer's (AD), Huntington's (HD) and ALS.

So it would be worth reading this book, just to get a general idea, although the book itself does not tell you much of science (molecular biology of cancer) behind this "miracle" cure. However, I don't think the "fast" a wise approach. Fast should be replaced by a more moderate approach such as "low" (70%) calorie diet.

I'm horrified that Amazon would even sell such a "book". This woman rambles on and on in this completely unorganized book. The ramblings are VERY weird and unnerved me that there was such a person out there able to publish "books". The writing sounded like she was high on meth / pot or some type of drug. Her recommendations and the way she basically "cured" her "cancer" (it was unproven whether she had cancer or not, but it's hard to make sense of it the way she rambles so incoherently) was to fast (only water) for 3+ weeks, and then eat only grapes for quite a few months after that. WHAT??? This is a joke, right?? That can't possibly be healthy for anyone, especially someone sick with cancer. I think you'd die from it even if you were healthy to start. Read the first page that rambles and it only gets WAYyyyyy worse after that. Don't waste your money. I'm disgusted that I did. (I've never written an Amazon review before but absolutely had to for this one. I'll be happy if I save even one person from this nut case)

Dr. Brandt's story is simply put and quickly read. It describes not only her cure but also the cures of many others. In fact, a little review on the internet will increase your belief in this method. Chemotherapy and radiation are brought to you by the same people who took away doctors' licenses when they washed their hands between patients. Beware the AMA and FDA. When someone has cancer, I give them this book.

Savannah Taylor had a normal (boring) life. She worked as an tax consultant in Minnisotta, had a long term relationship with her fience, and an apartment she had for the last six years.

The day of the wedding (Feb 14) turned her life around though. At first it seemed like nothing was going right; the flowers didnt match the dresses, the cake was frozen and so on. Then things started going really wrong-Savannah got arrested for money laundering and credit card fraud.

Luckally she managed to clear the misunderstanding up, but somebody had still stolen her identidy. That person lives in Napels, Florida. A few weeks later Savannah is off to Napels to make a change for herself and to find the person that had stolen her identedy.

In Maple Rapids, Michigan thirty-one years old CPA Savannah Taylor looks forward to marrying reliable bottom line Todd while working with walk in clients who come to Refund City, a national accounting firm that focuses on completing tax returns. On Valentine's Day, Reverend Black begins the wedding ceremony only to be interrupted by three FBI agents. Instead of a marriage ring, Savannah receives handcuffs as the Feds arrest her for tax evasion and money laundering.

Savannah proves to the Feds that she is innocent as someone obviously stole her identity. The rat Todd dumps her anyway because he feels she is not worth the time or trouble. Irate Savannah decides to change her image starting with confronting the person who caused her mess but also saved her from a death sentence with the brat rat. She heads to Naples, Florida where the purchases on her credit cards are posted from. Of course meeting US Air Marshal Mike Bryson seems worth reengineering herself.

MATCH GAME is a fine contemporary tale in which the tiny romantic subplot takes a coach seat to Savannah's coming of age quest to find herself and the thief. Readers will shake their heads at Todd's chutzpah as he breaks the engagement because he went through too much with her arrest, but still expects Savannah to do his taxes. Savannah is terrific as she tries to reinvent herself by quitting her job and seeking the thief while her family worries about her. The identify theft subplot augments a solid tale by showing how easy it is to steal and how much trouble swamps the victim. Beverly Brandt provides a fine mainstream story.

MATCH GAME by Beverly Brandt
June 28, 2006

Rating: 3 Stars

MATCH GAME by Beverly Brandt is the story of Savannah Tyler, a woman who is nearly arrested for money laundering and tax evasion on her wedding day. The whole event is so traumatic for her fiancé, that he dumps her at the altar, and this causes Savannah to think she's not worthy enough to keep a man.

When she learns that someone had stolen her identity, she decides to hunt this person (Vanna) down and at the same time, aspires to be more like this mysterious Vanna who apparently has a much more fulfilling life, based on her credit card statements.

There's a lot of action in MATCH GAME. Savannah immediately moves to Florida in search of this mystery woman, starts job hunting, which leads her to a number of crazy stunts and laugh out loud scenes that the former Savannah Tyler would never dream of doing. For instance, Savannah interviews for a job at a restaurant, thinking that putting on a fish costume and enticing customers is part of the interview. This scene leads to a lot of laughs, and it also puts her in the eyes of good looking Mike, who she thinks is gay but isn't quite sure, since she continues to feel the chemistry between them.

My problem with MATCH GAME was the length of the novel. It went on a bit too long for this genre, a light-hearted romp akin to Chick Lit, but had no business being this long. I did enjoy the premise and appreciated the crazy plot line that prevailed throughout the book. I didn't quite buy into the ending scenes that involved the musician from Meat Loaf's band. It didn't quite ring true for me. However, overall MATCH GAME is a great beach read that did need a bit of editing to make it the perfect light-hearted romance with a bit of adventure in it.

This book has been an invaluable resource for me in my role as Director of Corporate Communications for a publicly-held, high tech electronics company. Image equals dollars, and "PowerBranding" shows high tech companies the steps required to build and leverage all their brands. The importance of the high tech corporate brand and marketing the company as the # 1 product are often overlooked, and yet are required to support product brands, marketing and sales, and even stock price. It is a MUST read for anyone/everyone involved in high tech branding, including senior executives, as well as PR, MarCom, and investor relations professionals.

Though this is the first book of THE GUN series, our hero, Matt Price, is tired and weary, on the move too much and seeing too many gunfights. But he just doesn't seem to warrant any rest, some new upcoming gunny always wants to take him on.

I have all the books in this series and enjoy all of them. With a veteran writer such as Lyle Brandt (Michael Newton) the interesting story just flows along. I found this series so good that I am now reading Mr. Brandt's newest series, LAWMAN, with the second of that series out at year's end.

As it says on the cover, "the gun, it's not just a weapon ... it's a way of life" and each of the five books that make up this series proves that a true statement.

If you enjoy a good western, especially ones of a short series, you just might want try this past series from the mind and pen of Lyle Brandt. I'll be surprised if you don't like them.

Semper Fi.

I read this book a long time ago, and furthermore I reject utilitarianism. Even so, I feel compelled to praise this book now if only to counterbalance the only other review herein. I remember being mightily impressed by the book when I read (and reread) it. I would justify that reaction now by noting that this was a pioneering effort to inform philosophy with empirical findings. That is now the rage if not yet the norm. Willard van Orman Quine had famously called for the "naturalizing" of philosophy, particularly in epistemology. Brandt heeded that call in ethics. I consider this book to have been state of the art at the time of its original publication. How it fares now I am not in a position to say.

David Hume is easily my favorite philosopher, so when I read of a "humean" modern moral philosopher, I jumped on this book. Unfortunately, I was terribly disappointed. When I read Brandt's belief that everyone in society should receive the same income, I could read no more. Hume would have been horrified by such an idea. Hume's moral theory was based on benevolence, but it was based on utility as well. Hume would have had some clue as to the complete disaster to the economy, and the incredible amount of power this would have placed in the federal government's hands. It never ceases to amaze me how naive modern philosophers can be when it comes to basic political economy.

If you are interested in more than how Omega watches look and need to know what's inside them, this book is a great resource. As a collector it's frustrating to see watches listed for sale with movement calibers listed, but not have a source of information that provides details on the movements. For Omega watches only, this book seems to be definitive in this area. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the major Omega lines and the other information on the company, although it's far from comprehensive. I would only recommend this book if you want or need the technical data on the Omega movements.

There is not much depth, but the book do give you a lot of information about the used movements, great photos and information on all watchlines by Omega. For indepth stories about how watches work, buy Chronograph Wristwatches : To Stop Time; Reinhard Meis, Gerd R. With a far from comprehensive collection of color photographs of vintage Omega's, a smattering of vintage ad reproductions, and a barely comprehensible company history, this book's only saving grace is the illustrated history of Omega movements.

If you need more movement info than can be found in Cooksey-Shugart, buy this book. Otherwise your money is better spent on something more generic, like (Heinz Hampel's) Automatic Wristwatches from Switzerland.

It amazes me that a well-known maker as Omega has a paucity of books in print detailing the history and products of this renowned maker (at least in English). Other than a hard to get and doubtless expensive official history, this leaves the gentle reader with this book by Mr. Kreuzer. A translation from German, this book is an exception to the overall thoroughness inherent in the German horological press. The history of Omega is very general and reads almost like a sales brochure from the company itself. Little effort is given to chronicling product development, especially in the era following WW 2, the most prolific period for the company and of most interest to collectors. Much better in this respect is the book "Tale of the Seamaster" by Messrs. Nakamura and Noda (Tokyo, World Photo Press). Unfortunately, this is in Japanese. On a positive note, the section in the back of the book detailing Omega movements is quite helpful, and I have often used it to identify watches.
