Highly educational, comedic review of lesbian existance

Review Date: 1998-10-15
When I started reading this book, I could hardly set it down but for a moment. This book tells of a realistic lesbian existance in this world, much to many people's dismay. It is a multi-faceted approach that deals with a community of women--their lives, interests, and pasttimes. It is also a good book for resources of various sorts: musical, social, environmental, political, etc.

Great book that is easy and fun to read.

This book is an excellent resource for the burning question "how do i meet people like me?" It is an excellent look at the lesbian/gay lifestyle in the US today, while being both very entertaining and educational. Many of the stories and places mentioned seem to center around the Southern California area, with specific club names and local contributors. I loved this book and all of the stories that these two intelligent women had the courage and humor to tell. I would recommend this book to anyone hoping to learn more about themselves or loved ones.

This is a clever, informative book that attempts to explore the lesbian experience in the US without taking itself too seriously. The authors' breezy, almost conversational tone makes this a fun and educational read. Far from being elitist, the authors have attempted (and succeeded, IMO) to portray to vast diversity within our culture, from the Birkenstock-clad Michigan womyn to the lipstick crowd at Dinah, and everything in between. They sometimes poke gentle fun at some of the absurdities of lesbian society, without being critical or judgmental. I highly recommend this book for anyone, gay or straight, who wants to learn something about lesbian life and culture.

Elitest Garbage

As the carefully selected cover might infer this book gives much homage to lesbians of the lipstick variety (a worthy subject no doubt). However, on their trip to the "heart of lesbian america" physical beauty is singled out as the most important way to these women's hearts. Initially they do a good round-up of lesbian culture and hotspots. But they fluctuate between humor that touches all of us at one time or another and humor that is at the expense of lesbians that didn't make the Miss America cut. One woman's appearance is compared with a gorilla. On another occasion they go on a bender about "hefty bag ladies." On top of this the interviews are carefully worded so that we can be constantly reminded that none of the interviewees hate men (as if that should be such a focal point in a book about culture by and for women). Just to figure out where these ladies were coming from I picked up an issue of Allure (van gelder is an editor for the mag). Well the only thing I could find that she wrote was a nice little piece about how to make eyeshadow work with your complexion. Low blow? Maybe but these women hit below the belt everytime. If you want an interesting and smart look at lesbian culture and history take a look at Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers by Lillian Faderman.

Most people associate non-fiction with "dry and boring." This book is not dry or boring in any way. There are parts that had me laughing so hard tears were rolling down my cheeks. I especially enjoyed the chapter on the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival and the Lesbian Avengers. Funny and insightful stuff. It isn't intended to be purely comedic and there are some serious parts. (It isn't fluff writing). The authors just have a witty writing style and they aren't afraid to poke fun at dyke culture. They interviewed over 100 women in preparation for this book (sex shop owners, ex-nuns, political activists, closeted teachers, sex workers, divorced lesbians, long-term couples, etc).

I teach drama/theater in a low income public school. I bought the book because my school has very few resources and I thought this might be useful. As it turned out the book was hardly used during my first year teaching. My biggest problem with this book is that it is not very user friendly for a teacher who just wants to add some fun to a class but not a complex game. In other words the book needs to make the games simpler so the kids can pick them up faster and have more fun. This might not be problem for teachers in high school as your students might be more mature and able to handle more complex games. But for middle school teachers tread lightly. Also if you have a bunch of behavior problems in your class then forgot about it. In my experience I found the worse the behavior the better they were at spoiling fun classroom games. Be warned.

This was on a list of suggested reading from a class I attended with Second City. I bought it hoping to use some of the ideas for my middle schoolers. There are many ideas in the book for younger kids, like songs. There are some good ideas that can be adapted into a middle school room.

I teach sixth grade math, and have a group of students for an exploratory class. We talk about current events, esteem building, community building, fun non-academic skills with an emphasis on social awareness. I have been using this book for most of the year so far, and my students look forward to it,a nd ask for it. I don't have a background in theater, but this book has several premade units that have a focus on different skills. The one I am just completing focuses on community building for the group and concentration and focus for the individual. I find it easy to use, and I like the skills that it is building and reinforcing in my students. If you don't want to do a whole unit, the individual exercises and warm-ups can be set up and completed in 5-10 minutes. Great, and quick!
I strongly recommend this for any classroom!

This book will help you animate your chart. In this book, descriptions of the astrologic players (houses, signs, planets, elements, ...) have personality and dimension. Read thru this book a couple of times. Make your lists, as the author encourages. You are destined to have some fun!

Kim has crammed a lot of material into a great book you can dip into for specific information or read as a deeper look into your Aptitudes via the placements of all planets in all the houses along with some asteroid material too. Simple to understand for those with next to no knowledge of Astrology yet something here for professionals too. See yourself and your clients from a new angle based on strengths as related to each planetary placement.

Invaluable- thank you Kim Falconer!

Reading this book together with my chart offered a wonderfully rounded approach to understanding astrology- and myself- giving someone who had little idea about the significance of houses and asteroids such inspiration to fully embrace and delve into the world of astrology. I can see that I will return to this book many times and recover new levels of meaning on each reading. Astrology and Aptitude is one of those rare finds that means as much to a complete novice as to a seasoned traveller. I'm eagerly awaiting Kim Falconer's next offering!

Not Enough Depth

Review Date: 2007-02-06
I was disappointed in "Astrology and Aptitude". I felt the author didn't go into enough depth with topics such as fixed stars, asteroids, arabic points, etc. It would have been nice to see how these components fit into the chart regarding one's career. Instead she just did a basic overview of each and moved on. Even her chart examples were lacking in detail.

If you are just starting out in astrology, this will be a good book for you, for it covers the signs and planets in regard to one's career very well.

However, if like me you have gone beyond basic understanding of astrology and want something more, you will be disappointed.

Kim Falconer is in the same league as Liz Greene and Noel Tyl for her work as an astrological writer, original thinker and compassionate counselor. "Astrology and Aptitude" is full of keen insight into the positive use of energies with which we are born. And she has a knack for explaining astrological symbolism without resorting to cookie-cutter descriptions. Includes sections on Chiron and the Nodes. Highly
recommended!

I was really excited when I received this book. It's gorgeous and the pictures are beautiful. I was planning a trip to LA and this book served as a huge resource for me. When I got to LA though, more than a few of the places in the book were no longer in business and I went to LA barely 2 months after this book came out. Plus, some of the places she did describe were really hyped up and were a waste of time. This was very disapointing. If the author grew up somewhere and is going to write abook about it, you can't just assume the places are still there. You have to do your research. Hopefully, Vintage New York will be more informative.

Vintage L.A. is like a magical treasure trove - filled with historic gems from Tinseltown past, endearing & insightful interviews with sparkling locals, dazzling photographs and endless riches to behold! It is apparent that the author, Jennifer Brandt-Taylor, is a true fan of Hollywood history and the City of Angels. She takes the reader on a whimsical "insider" tour, with many surprise stops along the way. Jennifer Brandt-Taylor does a wonderful job at inspiring the reader to look closer, to find divinely decadent inspiration in something that most pedestrians would pass by without a glance. I read this book in one sitting, and then placed it on my art-deco bookshelf alongside other favorites, "Eve's Hollywood" and "Weetzie Bat." I will make sure to leave enough room on that shelf for Jennifer Brandt-Taylor's next book...

Impossible to put down.

Knowing a good deal about book design and something about near-history, I can say that this book is a perfect package. From the gorgeous full-color pages saturated with great photography and vintage postcards to the colorful language used to illustrate this opulent city of dreams, Vintage LA is the magnum opus to Los Angeles. Anyone I know who has read this book recalls sitting down in the evening to crack the spine, and a few hours later they were finished, and ready to buy plane tickets to LA. It's a beautiful book!

This book covers just about everything I like about LA -- the good old-timey stuff! It's beautifully photographed, typeset and laid out from cover to cover, looking and reading like a Disneyland brochure from the '60s. The author leads you to historic walking & shopping destinations in every neighborhood in and around LA, with a special focus on all things glam and baroque. The photos are spectacular and the descriptions are fun, first-person, non-snooty and truly evocative of the wonder of visiting these groovy underappreciated relics. You'll want to visit each and every spot, and the more of them you experience, the more your view of LA will change from the unfair stereotype of a dumb, violent, smoggy wasteland to a true love of this lovely, historic fantasyland left behind by dreamers of the past.

Hats off to Jennifer Brandt-Taylor, the vintage queen! Her new book VINTAGE L.A. is a well-crafted homage to the delightful assortment of styles and flavors which comprise the identity of Los Angeles.

It is an extremely well balanced and thoughtfully compiled collection of reviews, photos, tidbits of trivia, and other ephemera which sparked my interest in revisiting the town in which I live.

Collecting vintage is one of my true passions. Finer men's attire of bygone eras is my own calling, so when Jennifer referred to the boutique Playclothes I was obliged to investigate. What a treat! I left with 2 deadstock silk scarves from the Edwardian era and some other treasures for well below market value. Thanks, Jennifer!

The love which the author has for her hometown is apparent in her features of the magical haunts and classic splendor of old Hollywood. Two of my absolute favorite places to soak up some genuine Tinseltown are the Magic Castle and the Beverly Hills Hotel. Hands down the finest establishments in which to imbibe.

It was a true inspiration flipping through the expertly layed out pages. My eyes were led along from page to page as if a kid in a candy store had been turned loose on a shopping spree. A plethora of colors and styles was arranged like a bouquet, enticing the reader to dive in and experience the finest this American epicenter of culture has to offer.

One thing I absolutely loved was her interspersed features of vintage lovers from all walks of fame in their respective environments. Catching a glimpse of how these zany characters live and reading their own reflections on the things which keep them inspired was a fascinating allusion to the eclecticism of Los Angeles.

If at all you are interested in planning a trip to Los Angeles, please do yourself a favor and let Jennifer Brandt-Taylor be your guide to the stars!

I am pleased to say that this book has helped me to see Brandt's work with new eyes, yet again. The images are beautifully and faithfully displayed, the accompanying text helpful, insightful. For too long, purchasing major books on Brandt was an exercise in out-of-print frustration. If you have any interest in Brandt, or if you know someone who does, buy this book! Ann Brandt has written an all-inclusive account of her family's struggle with her husband's bout with brain cancer. Given from the perspective of the caregiver, Ann gives us the total package, i.e., information about brain tumors, from diagnosis to treatment to after-care. She also presents the emotional view of a wife learning how to cope with a "new" normal for her husband and herself. Perhaps the strongest message she imparts is hope. For anyone going through this horrendous illness, it is a helpful reference for all caregivers.

While the life-threatening disease the author of this book faced was brain cancer, there is plenty of good advice and useful information here for one caring for someone with any other life-threatening illness. Having cared for my mother during treatment for non-Hodkin's lymphoma, I can relate to many of the struggles Ann describes and wish that I had had a book like this during that time.

Staying on Top Steadfastly and Consciously

Review Date: 2008-02-23
When this author faced the struggle and recovery with Guillain-Barre, she learned the life-sustaining importance of courage, faith, and the medical community. She also learned the necessity of having an active and curious caregiver who works round the clock for the patient's needs. A year later, Ann finds herself in the reversed role of being the primary caregiver for her husband George when they learn he has brain cancer. Ann tells the story of his near-death experience, treatment, therapy and recovery in a step-by-step detailed and close-up narrative that unfolds the vital role a good caregiver must play. The account is filled with advice on how necessary it is for caregivers to maintain their own well-being in order to take over the tasks of the patient. She also explains the ways in which the outcome of the healing process itself may depend on the caregiver's steadfast and conscious body, mind and spirit's staying on top of (and indeed one step ahead of) the patent's illness. This book highlights information throughout on help that is available in the community and medical areas. It comes with an appendix of accumulated resources, book listing and handy glossary of related terms. A Caregiver's Story is a shared personal journey into the awful valley of cancer and of faith and courage. There are some interesting discourses on the power of things such as prayer and optimism as well as the productive use of a caregiver's time and energy. The story is a rich resource for other cancer patients and their caregivers and is told with clarity and precision. It's a good book for anyone to read and learn, for although we may not get cancer or even become a caregiver, we will most certainly know someone close who is going through this experience. This book enlightens us on how to be a helpful good friend or relative in such an event.

I bought this after looking at the description and reviews on the website, but had no clue that it is essentially a date book with pictures of textile arts and very short passages (generally 2-4 lines) about making things scattered throughout. I was expecting something more along the lines of essays, or longer daily chunks - a book rather than a non-year-specific calendar. I have no need for a date book, so this will be going back to amazon.

Two of my favorite quotes found therein: "Creativity is using the resources you best understand to make something positive happen. This isn't just about the arts. It's about business, medicine, leadership, housekeeping, world politics, or a Sunday potluck dinner." And, "The opposite of war is not peace. It is making things." Bravo Janet. As a church planter and a mentor to church planters, I believe this book will help every church planter to a call to biblical preaching in such a way that will lay the foundations for the future of the new church. Dr. Kirksey has given an anthology of preaching and preachers that will be invaluable to every student of preaching. This fresh reminder of the call to ministry, and the committment to expository preaching and teaching is invaluable to the foundations of a new church. May we see the day as biblical preaching, God-called visionary leadership, sound growth principles, and just hard work will raise up millions of new churches who see their calling as world mission strategy centers, every Christian leader as a mission strategist, and every believer a kingdom mission agent in the marketplace. I believe that Sound Biblical Preaching will be a valuable contribution to see this new day a reality."

"Catch of the Day" is a collection of four short romantic, wedding stories by different authors beginning with Brides Gone Wild by Cathie Linz which is the charming story of Pam Greenley, a floral designer, who runs into her first love and high school sweetheart, Michael Denton. Michael ended their relationship when he left for college 10 years ago, and they have not seen each other since except at their high school reunion just a month ago when they fell into bed with each other and Michael left again without a word. Now Michael is back in town for his cousin's wedding which is only one of the five weddings that Pam is coordinating the flowers for this weekend. Pam is determined to avoid Michael, but he keeps popping up and making her realize that even though she is still attracted to him she refuses to be hurt by him again. Michael, who wrote a book called, How to Hook Your Guy, under a pen name, is determined not to get hooked in the foreseeable future but simply cannot fight his continuing attraction for Pam. Funny situations arise in this romantic comedy set in a very nosy small town in which the town gossip has her own blog!

Lissy Charteris and Will Fraser seem to have the perfect relationship. They really love each other and have the most steamy sex life until Lissy comes up with the idea of abstinence for the two weeks prior to their wedding. So The Bet and much sexual frustration ensue as Will tries to entice Lissy to attack him while she drives him to near insanity with temptation. Is this the wedge that will keep them from saying "I do"? Throw in the mother of the bride from hell who will do nearly anything to keep her daughter from walking down the aisle and you have the funny and frustrating adventure of Heaven Can't Wait by Pamela Clare.

So Caught Up in You by Beverly Brandt is a story full of adventure as Tasha O'Shaunessey is determined to make sure that her sister's adventure wedding goes smoothly in Costa Playa even though she has heard the nasty rumors concerning the wedding planner for Extreme I Do, Quinn Hayes. It is rumored that Quinn is involved in white slavery, is an ex-con, and also may be responsible for the disappearance of two film stars that vanished five years ago when Quinn was the last person to see them alive. But Tasha quickly finds out things are not always what they seem as she goes swinging over the canopy of trees in the jungle, helps to hide refugees, and aids Quinn in the coverup of the murder of the head of Costa Playa's secret police all while trying to understand her intense attraction to Quinn.

In The Wedding Party by Whitney Lyles Meg Thomlinson is hopeful to reconnect with Mason Strout the guy she dumped several months ago only to realize that maybe she made the mistake of her life. They are both in her best friend's wedding party, and Meg is hoping that they can pick up where they left off. But just when Meg thinks life is back on track with Mason she meets Bill who is also in the wedding party and is now wondering if he could possibly be the man of her dreams especially when they get stranded in Mexico together.

**** I really enjoyed these combined romantic stories which make a fun and delightful read as four women each find their `Catch of the Day'! This book would make an entertaining beach read. ****

"Brides Gone Wild" by Cathie Linz. In Serenity Falls, Pennsylvania, the upcoming weekend would be hell if the five brides cooperated, but not one does as the owner of Bloomers Flowers Shop Pam knows first hand. On top of that her high school boyfriend Michael is back in town insisting long distance relationships cannot work even as he keeps kissing her while also hiding the truth about a book he wrote.

"Heaven Can't Wait" by Pamela Clare. Lissy and Will agree to three weeks of abstinence so that when they say I do they will share heaven afterward. However, the wait, romantic as it seems to Lissy, proves torturous on Will who loves to make love with his beloved.

"So Caught Up to You" by Beverly Brandt. In Naples County, Florida Quinn is the wedding planner for the Celie-Cal marriage. Celie's sister Tasha, an investigative reporter, learns some interesting items about Quinn and the disappearance of two people five years ago. She decides to make inquiries into the man, but was not expecting to be attracted to him.

"The Wedding Party" by Whitney Lyles. In San Diego Meg is a bridesmaid at her friend's wedding, but her thoughts linger on another member of the procession, Mason, whom she dumped a year ago. After dating some, she knows she made a mistake, but how to rectify it remains the question. However, the cousin of the bride Bill has his own plan to win her heart.

These four lighthearted contemporary romantic romps contain a matrimonial thread, but the eight prime protagonists have different roles in the upcoming nuptials. Each story is fun as love as in the air or at least down the aisle.

Lainie Ames is a down on her luck leading lady who has returned to her hometown broke and desperate right around the time of her high school reunion. After desperation drives her to commit a random act of theft, from a rich, good looking stranger, she happens to run into the victim of her shenanigans while she's looking for a job. The ensuing story is full of whimsical fun, cute characters and fast moving action. This book is never going to win a Pulitzer, but it's a lighthearted and entertaining read.

Fifteen years ago Lainie Ames left Naples, Florida following her high school graduation feeling that she was a loser, but dreamed she come back a major success. Instead she returns the way she left believing she remains a loser. The Seattle hi tech company went bankrupt and her former spouse Ted ran up gambling debts. Her half sister and their father believe she came home for some rest until she starts anew as they assume she is wealthy with a computer science degree due to the three lies she told them. Instead she came home because she had no other place to go.

Jack Danforth hires Lainie to work at his detective agency because as he says to himself he is an idiot for thinking with the wrong head. He wants Lainie, but she seems to desire some hunk from her high school days, football captain Blaine Harper. You don't know Jack if you think he will allow Blaine to get his Lainie as he knows he loves her.

Though Lainie is in her thirties this is a coming of age story that is summarized by Blaine when he says "your value as a person is not dependent on who wears your letterman jacket", a lesson that the lead female must learn. Chick lit fans will enjoy Lainie's escapades as Jack keeps jacking up her dating while she assumes she cannot compete with the likes of Shay though the two men competing for her would say that Shay cannot compete with her. Beverly Brandt provides a delightful humorous look at the modern day DATING GAME.

Lainie Ames has returned to her high school home not the success she always envisioned, but a complete failure. She has no job, her home was repossessed, her husband left her with a huge mountain of debt, and she literally has no place else to go. Lainie tries to fool her family into thinking that she is just home to make some decisions about her future because she wants to hide her failure from everyone as long as she can.

Jack Danforth finds Lainie in his office looking for a job at his detective agency. He finds that ironic since he just had met her in a restaurant, in which she stole his credit card to pay for her and her sisters meal. He was looking for her, has done some research on her and knows her circumstances, so he hires her. Jack finds himself drawn to Lainie, but she is only interested in catching the eye of her crush in high school, Blaine Harper.

This is a enjoyable light read. Lainie never felt like she measured up, and most of us can relate to feeling like that at some time in our lives.
