A Little Known World War II Incident

Review Date: 2007-08-10
It is well known that Japanese citizens living on the American West Coast were interned in concentration camps during World War II. But on the whole the Germans and Italians living in the East and Midwest were not.

This book reports on the internment of Germans who had been living in Latin America that were arrested by their government at the instigation of the US government, deported to the US and interned. (Later, the Government in a strange sort of logic determined that they hadn't entered the country legally and were trying to deport them.)

This is the story of a little known incident that affected the lives of a lot of people. It was not the United States at it's best. Then again, neither was the treatment of the Japanese, nor the situations at Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib.

This book shows the highly organised groups like the CFR and how they seem to wield and extremely high level of influence over the US political system and beyond.

Well documented and hard hitting, the books author Tom Hanahoe hits home with some extremely well researched and disturbing facts.

More informed and a lot less funny than Michael Moore's "Stupid White Men", this books shows how the rights of the many are over looked and trampled upon by the rights of the elite.

An insightful book that is most revealing of the globalization that has taken place while America sleeps. An explanation of increasing unemployment in the USA caused by international corporate greed and pandering politicians. A must read for every concerned citizen.

Backroad Mapbooks: Southwestern Alberta

Review Date: 2007-07-17
Backroad Mapbooks: Southwestern Alberta is a complete outdoor recreational guide for those working, living, or traveling to southern Alberta. This book contains full colour maps showing the smallest back road, river tributary, and lake. Maps also include details on the size and general condition of roads; location of campsites and tourist information centers; and indoor and outdoor recreational areas.

This book also contains a very detailed reference section with information on fishing regulations and fishing tips; lake and river paddling routes (including put in and take out areas); parks and campgrounds; hiking, walking, and sightseeing trails; wildlife viewing areas, and winter recreation areas. Within each of these sections, various areas of southwestern Alberta are explored with detailed entries on particular locations, sites, and areas. This part of the book will be particularly useful to those visiting the area as well as residents looking for something new to do.

As an archaeologist, I do a lot of back road and oilfield access trail driving. Usually, the development or survey map I am given is in really bad shape and usually twenty or thirty years out of date. Therefore, I usually have to guess how to get to my project area. This takes up extra time that could be better used on site. Using this map though, I now have a good idea of the exact oilfield roads to take to get to my sites. I even have an idea of how good of road conditions I can expect on these roads saving me a good deal of valuable time.

In this way, the map portion of this guide will be particularly helpful for those working in the oilfield industry. This book actually shows many of the existing back roads and oilfield roads so that the reader can quickly find a way into his or her project area. I know of only one other map book with such detail. This other book retails at over $250, making Backroad Mapbooks: Southwestern Alberta much more economically reasonable.

As a reference on out door activities in this area, this is a good book.

Extremely detailed maps show hiking trails, boat launches, hang gliding spots, horse back riding trails, out of the way campgrounds, etc. Separate sections on trails, fishing, paddling and parks/campgrounds with descriptions are cross indexed. If you can put the pieces together, the total amount of information in this book is impressive

High Country Haiku
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-25
Brandon's Trail is a Haiku of a novel: refined, precisely crafted, with a spare beauty and elegant surprises. It is 212 pages long, the same length, in miles, of the novel's backdrop, the John Muir Trail of California's Sierra Nevada mountain range. If you've never backpacked the high country before, you'll gain a wonderful taste of its realities, large and small, painful and sublime. If you are a backpacking veteran you'll recognize your own trail experiences here and slip into them like a comfortable pair of old and well-loved hiking boots. This is the story of an unusual family, one with the moxie and daring to undertake a challenge few would contemplate: to hike the entire length of the John Muir Trail as a family, including their three-year-old daughter. The narrative is liberally interspersed with the trail-journal of ten-year-old Brandon, including his pencil/charcoal sketches made during the almost four week transit of the trail. We are treated to Brandon's reportage ranging from the most mundane of family history and interpersonal dynamics, to equipment niceties, and even high-flown musings on what sort of laws should rightfully prevail in our pristine wilderness areas--according to a ten-year-old's precocious thinking. The narrative contains both drama and laughter to engage our interest, to deepen our caring for the characters and broaden our sympathy for their exertions and goals. It is by no means certain what degree of success the enterprise will have as the trek moves into its final stages and a full spectrum of emotions is revealed, to be explored and resolved, we hope, for the best. Brandon's Trail is a book to be admired for its language and sensibilities, paragraph by paragraph, page by page, until, just like the John Muir Trail, it concludes with the stirring vista, not only of Trail's End, but also, the look back at where we've been on this pleasurable passage, this gratifying and edifying meditation on one of Nature's wonders, the Sierra Nevada and those who lovingly tread its alpine fastness.

The Bulldogs of Belleville finds it's voice in 3 unique-and arguably disparate- individuals bound together by a random, life altering event. A mothers love for her child severely tested in a moment gone violent; the kindness and bravery of a stranger willing to risk her life for the sake of a child not her own; Blood, struggle, suffering and triumph. The Bulldogs of Belleville is at once harrowing and inspirational, illiciting terror and marvel with each turn of the page. By far the best story and writing I've discovered in the past 5 years.

I know this author personally and this book is written in first person. It is interesting, thorough, holds your interest while unraveling the story of Brandon's nightmare attack. Mrs. Robbins writes from the heart and it is easy to feel her fear. I recommend this book to mothers who areconcerned over the safety of their children around big dogs. Great job Cinda!

The debut poetry collection of author Brandon Robb, Circle in the Sand is a free-verse compilation that covers both religious and secular themes, from "His Hands" about the scarred hands of Christ to "A Mother's Sacrifice" about what a woman gives up for the health of her sick child. The short, often didactic format of the poems imparts their meaning directly and simply, in this concise and expressive narrative collection. "Ratings": A dispute turns / Into a litigation. / The litigation / Into prostitution. // Two parties / Each with a story / Go on TV to / Gain their glory. // Although this could / Be solved by sense / And perhaps / Some intelligence, // They decide it's better / To go on television / To settle their affairs / In front of millions. // Thinking, perhaps, that they / Will gain what they deserve. / But, ending up looking like / Buffoons full of nerve.

Filled with stories, legends, songs, and recipes, The Everything Christmas Book is a fun read, as well as an authoritative reference. The editors observe that the true spirit of Christmas is a sense of wonder and "this book is intended as a celebration of that wonder."

They begin with the history of Christmas and how it "evolved over many centuries, enduring occasional tribulation, scrutiny, and abolishment along the way." Folklore, such as why red and green are Christmas colors, complements the historical facts. They also explain how decorated trees and Santa Claus became a part of contemporary Christmas celebrations.

The chapters on stories and poems include such well-known tales as Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" and Moore's "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," in addition to other favorites. Music and complete lyrics are provided for forty Christmas carols. The list of Christmas videos contains more than fifty titles.

Do you know in what year "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was first broadcast or when "Miracle on 34th Street" was first released in movie theaters? These are two of the 106 questions included in "The Ultimate Mass-Media Christmas Trivia Quiz." (Answers are at the end of the chapter!)

If you're up to a little traveling, check out the section on local festivities. Tree-lighting ceremonies, parades, Yule log celebrations, feasts, and lighting festivals are available all across the States. The editors provide times and contact information for each event listed.

No Christmas is complete without lots of good food, and the editors have selected a tantalizing sample of holiday recipes, including wassail and "Special Green and Red Vegetable Salad." Recipes are divided into sections for breakfasts and brunches, appetizers, side dishes, main courses and accompaniments, sweets and desserts, and drinks.

The next chapter offers recipes for gift-giving. And yes, it does include fruitcakes!

The editors conclude with a section on how Christmas is celebrated in other parts of the world and a discussion of Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.

The Everything Christmas Book is an ideal gift for people of all ages and interests. Be sure to get a copy for yourself also--it will soon become a treasured favorite.

While technically not perfect, The Faith Of Legacy (odd title, but makes sense after you read the story) is a magnificent piece of storytelling. It's quite a breath of fresh air to a genre full of cardboard cutout stereotypical characters. These are real people, complex and flawed, cast into a lush world of fantasy. It's full of the usual wizards, magic, and monstrous beasts, but it is the characters who are the stars (as they should be) and you will find yourself identifying with them in ways that I've never before seen in a fantasy genre story. It has obviously been well thought out and great attention was paid to the details. There are a lot of twists and revelations as the story progresses that aren't forced or invented on the spot for effect. Everything seems preplanned and after finishing the book you'll find that it's part of a much bigger world and a much bigger plan than you originally thought.

Can't wait for the sequel

Brandon Begley has created a fantastic world of fantasy for his beloved characters to interact. I felt myself rooting for the character early on and yelling at him when he made stupid mistakes. Some chapters provide great comic releif from the action while others bring tears to your eyes. The villians are really evil and destructive, which stacks the odds against "Fireheart".

If you liked Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, or Xanth then you will like this book.

I only wish a map was included. I contacted the author and he provided me with a copy of his personal map, which cleared up some of my directionally challenged moments.
