A needed anthologyReview Date: 2008-05-30
Being from Ukraine I found much of the information within the pages of this book engrossing to read about. Specifically, the history of Jews and Ukrainians in Galicia was very intriguing. I found it interesting that the Ukrainians in this area were affected by German/Austrian anti-Semitism which differed from that of other areas within Ukraine which was more affected by Polish and Russian anti-Semitism. There is an entire chapter which chronicles the destruction of Ukrainian Jewry village/town/city by village/town/city and year by year, an excellent reference. One of the chapters also notes how much more research is needed in regards to the role of Police Battalions, which in Ukraine actually killed more Jews than Einsatzgruppen C and D combined! Something that undoubtedly few know about. As with any book worth its salt this one raises as many questions as it answers, questions which hopefully will be answered in the near future as our knowledge and understanding of this event within the borders of Ukraine grows. Highly recommended for those with an interest in either the Holocaust or Ukrainian history during this time period.

A charming and creative tale of love, hope and courageReview Date: 2008-08-19
Upon his arrival at the convent, Sister Many Pockets names the orphan boy Oyster because she believes his heart is a pearl. His last name, R. Motel, comes from the Royal Motel towel in which he had been wrapped.
For the past 10 years, Oyster has lived with Sister Many Pockets and 12 other nuns in a world of quiet-soled shoes and prayerful silence. He is educated by Sister Many Pockets, and the only time he has ever gone beyond the gates is to visit the doctor. In the convent, communications is done by pen and paper --- not an exciting environment for an inquisitive, growing boy.
For friends, Oyster has a sickly baby bird he tucks in his bedroom closet and to which he feeds unconsecrated hosts. He also has a moth collection that he keeps in a cardboard box, covered with a mesh lid. And there's the tadpole in the holy water font. As 10-year-old boys often do, Oyster has become active and curious. His jumping pews, pumping the organ and riding the bell cord in the belfry have been the cause of much consternation, and his misbehavior has generated complaints among the nuns. More and more he wants to explore the world beyond the convent walls
Outside contact is primarily with Mrs. Fishback, an unpleasant woman who arrives each morning with her overweight daschund, Leatherbelly. Mrs. Fishback cooks and run errands for the nuns. She also delights in telling bad news and dislikes children --- especially Oyster --- who she believes does not belong in a convent.
The summer Oyster is 10, children begin to disappear. The media calls it the "Mysterious Temporary Disappearances," or MTDs for short. Kids vanish into objects such as hula hoops, sofa cushions and tire swings. Then, after a time, they reappear.
Mrs. Fishback follows the news reports of the MTDs closely. She hopes Oyster will disappear, although not temporarily. One day, after Oyster chips a tooth, Mrs. Fishback is called upon to take him to the dentist. She, Oyster and Leatherbelly hop in the convent's van, and she "bullies her way across town," driving madly to the dentist. After she is slightly injured in an accident, which she blames on Oyster, Mrs. Fishback sends him to get help.
Oyster wanders down the street and enters a store with boxes and rows of shelves filled with rolled-up scrolls. Inside, he meets a woman who tells him she is a mapkeeper for the "Imagined Other Worlds" of children. Oyster is surprised to learn that imaginations can be mapped, and is even more astonished to discover that there is a map in the store with his own name on it. When the mapkeeper is not looking, he slips his map into a pocket and leaves.
Later that day, Oyster disappears from the dentist's office. The nuns, especially Sister Many Pockets, are frantic with worry. Where has their beloved boy gone? Will he ever return? How can they get him back?
THE SLIPPERY MAP by N.E. Bode (whose impressive body of work includes THE ANYBODIES, THE NOBODIES and THE SOMEBODIES) is a charming and creative tale of love, hope and courage. It is a story about the pain of loneliness and the power of the imagination to enlighten, transform and heal.

For fans who enjoy a political legal thrillerReview Date: 2003-07-03
The unthinkable happens when Ben is murdered before their eyes.
Chris swears he saw the victim kill himself while Anne is one hundred percent certain she saw someone shoot Ben, but the cops let that person go free. Anne and Chris disagree as to what happened even as the police arrest Morris for the homicide. Though the case has caused a schism between them, their love helps them form a bond to find the proof that her father is not the killer, but their investigation takes them into the highest levels of Lone Star society.
Fans who enjoy a political legal thriller will want to read SLIVER MOON. The story line focuses on how two intelligent witnesses see the same inncident so differently. When the tale stays within the frame, it is a powerful story that leaves readers to question what he or she sees (in a gestalt way). When the plot veers into high stakes conspiracy, it retains its excitement, but loses some of the cerebral edge. Still Jay Brandon provides a deep novel that will remain with the audience long afterward as each fan will reconsider basic observations.

These 52 Bible studies are a resource for anyone wanting or needing to hear the Good News. Developed with a small group of elderly persons, their presentation is appropriate for persons of all ages and conditions--especially those dealing with loss, fear or other problems. They are suitable for individual and group study. Teachers of adult classes, leaders of support and small discussion groups will find them useful.
Each lesson begins and ends with a short prayer. A brief introduction precedes the Scripture(s). The interpretations, while consistent with modern scholarship, use traditional vocabulary and doctrine. Neither "conservative" nor "liberal" should be upset or 'turned off'. For all, there is challenge and guidance to understand the love of God who is in His world and among His children--today, yesterday, forever.
Questions to stimulate reflection and discussion conclude each lesson. The Preface and Introduction describe the book's origin and purpose. In "A Word to Teachers" the author offers suggestions and advice based on his experience. All royalties go to Wesleyan Homes, Inc. of the Central Texas Conference.
Here is an excellent resource for either group or individual Bible study.
