Better known for his poetry, Dobyns has shown his mastery of the mystery genre as well. This addition to the Saratoga series is especially great, but I have yet to read one that's poor or even just good; each one has been excellent. Dobyns talent is in taking the conventions of the typical mystery and giving them a facelift. Saratoga Bestiary--and the other Saratoga books--are filled with comedy, excellent characterization, and a poet's flair for masterful language and dialogue. I found myself strangely attached to the characters in a way that I haven't been since adolescence. I highly, highly reccomend this series of books--even if you don't like mysteries as I didn't--as well as the rest of Dobyns work.

I used this book as a source for my term paper which was on shakespeare. I wanted to get essays written by people during the time the plays were performed. This was a great book with lots of essays written by people from all different centuries since the plays have been published. It was an easy book to use...just like a dictionary. All you basically need to find out if the volume number which you can find out quite easily. It was a great book to use and from now on it's the first one I think about using.

A very good analytical survey of recent work

...Undeterred, I nevertheless wish to recommend it. It should, in fact, be in every university library at least, and most scholars would benefit greatly from reading it. I have myself bought a copy, and am very pleased with it. The contributors are on the whole very much in the forefront of Shakespeare scholarship, and write about their subject with great authority and acumen. Each scholar surveys an area of work on Shakespeare, which creates a sensible division of labour, and allows the individual concerned not only to outline the major developments of recent times, but to do so analytically and critically, so that the reader not only finds out what has happened, but also what at least one skilled reader has to say about it. Future volumes will adopt a similar approach, so that over time we should get a pretty full picture of developments in Shakespeare studies in recent years. As noone can - or would indeed be happy to - read ALL work on Shakespeare, even as it appears, it will remain necessary for all of us to receive guidance from informed scholars who have each intelligently read at least a well-defined PORTION of it over a number of years. That is the guidance which this book provides, and eminently so. - Joost Daalder, Professor of English, Flinders University (South Australia)

I was not very enthusiastic about taking a Sociology course. As I started reading this text I began developing a more informed view of the world we live in and how it works. The book is certainly a masterpiece that tackles issues of global relevance in an objective way. I would recommend anyone to buy this book and teachers to use it as their text.

Didn't want it to end

This is the second Bradshaw novel that I've read, the first one being Wolf Hunt, and I really liked that one too. The Somers Treatment is so different from Wolf Hunt, but in both, Bradshaw does a great job at character development.

The Somers Treatment is about Dr. Janet Morly, who adopts a deaf orphan boy from Nepal named Madhab. She takes him home to Britain in hopes to have his impaired hearing corrected and to learn language and get an education. They get help from an old med school acquaintance, David Somers, who happens to be a genius as well as unethical, pompous, and arrogant. Madhab's treatment is experimental, and along the way Janet learns that it is being funded by the Ministry of Defense (MoD). Things get more interesting when an employee of the MoD, Michael Shahid, steps into the picture to make sure all the risks have been explained to Madhab and that no one is taking advantage of him. From there the story gets more involved with murder, espionage, romance and science too. It was a good book. I finished it in only a couple days.

I loved the way Bradshaw developed the characters and the entire story. They were all believable and smart. I felt empathy for the characters and sorry for Madhab too, but I didn't pity him; I liked all the main characters and wanted the book to go on longer. I'm looking forward to reading another novel by Gillian Bradshaw.

This Latin and Old Irish codex contains the only complete Irish liturgy to survive the supression of the Irish churches by the Roman Catholic English Normans.
It provides a valuable means of understanding the Christianity of the pre-Schism Irish churches and what was lost in their submission to Roman practices.

I loved this book. Having been divorced 2 times I knew that I needed help in the area of relationships. John Bradshaw clearly showed by example and explanation the problems I was having in the areas of separation anxiety and fear of commitment. I feel as if this book showed me a way to better understand my past mistakes and gave me hope for my future relationships. A true genius !

This small, compact, and very informative paperback is a perfect tool for the novice or veteren Fantasy Football or NFL Football Fans. Being a 35 year NFL fan, and 11 year Fantasy Fanatic, I can assure you that it's size alone makes your Fantasy life more informative, enjoyable, and darn sure more organized. You can't appreciate this Journal's real value unless you've found yourself running out of floor space at all hour's of the night. At just a fraction over pocket size, you have an explanation of the Fantasy game, Rule's, Drafting Strategies, Scoring, Starting a League, Position-by-Position Anaylis, 4-Year Stats. on all Players, Ranking's, and, well you get the draft er drift. After years of ranking players for all kinds of scoring system's with pencil and paper, I have concluded that a Distance-Yardage Scoring System is the most effective way to seperate tiers of Players Value, and the Bradshaw Journal is perfect even for this hardcore scoring method. So, if you're tired of humping those old suitcases full of data around the trainer's table, or just a trivia buff, for about the price of a Magazine, and a back rub from one of yor kid's, by all Means (730 Rush/Yds, 46 Rec./Yds., 186 total/attempts,) pick a couple of these up,( and send me one ), or better yet, for less than a good back brace go purchase the software and forget about it.

East Texas Humorous Stories
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-02
This is a biased review as the author, Landon H. Bradshaw, was my father's (Legran J. Bradshaw) brother. The foreward to the book was written by Landon's friend Leon Hale who has written for years and continues to write for the largest daily newspaper in Houston, Texas.

The book contains many humorous short stories about people who actually lived throughout the 1900s in rural East Texas. Landon was a great story teller and on ocassion would embellish the truth with his own hilarious interpretation of the facts. Most of these stories were first written for the local newspaper (Jasper Newsboy) in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
