If you are looking for some answers and solutions then this is a good place to start. John is honest and even shares his own personal struggles.

I prefer his audio tapes over his books because his books tend to be dry and impractical and you might say he's still trying to prove to the teacher he's an intellectual.

Important work now in English

The Heroikos is important in its own right, but also gives important (and entertaining) ancient commentary on Homer's Odyssey and provides relevant background for the study of Christian origens and the New Testament. Maclean and Aitken provide an excellent introduction and translation. If that is not enough, the prologue by Gregory Nagy and epilogue by Helmut Koester alone make the book worth getting.

Fuszard's Innovative Teaching Strategies in Nursing 3rd ed. by Arlene J. Lowenstein and Martha J. Bradshaw (Ed.)
This book is intended as a reference book for teachers and is appropriate for any teacher. The book has seven parts: 1. introduction (effective learning, innovation, critical thinking, creativity, and humor), 2. teaching in structured settings (lecture, problem-based learning, reflective practice, and sensitive subjects), 3. simulation and imagination (role-play, simulation, expressive techniques, debate, and the tree of impact), 4. technology assisted strategies (distance education, electronic communications, and web-based instruction), 5. remote faculty (co-consultant, preceptor, and mentor), 6. clinical teaching (philosophical approaches, refocusing the nursing skills laboratory, low literacy, community based experience, nursing process mapping, and issues in clinical teaching), 7 evaluation (computer-based testing, clinical pathway, and evaluation of learning outcomes). The chapters have section headings, tables, figures, exhibits, examples, resources, conclusions, notes, and suggested readings. This is a valuable teaching resource.

This was an excellent read! Great for people who are curious about the effects of globalization on the world's labor force. The authors have divided the world's labor markets into regions and provided extensive insight into the effects of globalization on under developed regions; and the consequences faced in the Americas as a result of increased globalization. Easy and interesting read. The other books in this series, Sociology for a New Century are great as well. Try Waves od Democracy next.

A historic Route!!

The Gold Road to La Paz is a step by step guide along the modern remants of the Bradshaw Trail. The trail was the original route that the Butterfield Stadge Company followed from Los Angeles to Phoenix. The Gold Road to La Paz follows the road from the eastern shore of the Salton Sea to Modern Erenburg, Az. Just north of Erenburg along AZ Hwy 1 you can still see the diggings of the gold fields of La Paz. The guide describes in detail and in tenths of a mile all the features and history along the road including trail markers and some excelent side trips. The trail sometimes is still marked in Rock Hound books and on maps as the Old Butterfield Stadge Road just south of the Chocolate Mountains along Interstate 10 between Indio and Blythe. I was able to obtain my copy several years ago at the bookstore inside the BLM office in Palm Springs.

Somewhere to begin to learn the more ancient use of Mass
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-16
A Guide to the Celebration of Low Mass is somewhere to begin in coming to know and draw from the rich ancient liturgical heritage now once again freely available to the whole Church - both priests and faithful. The guide, drawing from the author's decades of experience as an accomplished Master of Ceremonies and as a student of liturgical law, provides practical instructions clearly set out as to what a priest should say and do and when. Rightly, the author has left this work unencumbered with references to the rubrical sources - these can readily be found in the standard manuals. And so he offers us a timely, accurate and straightforward `how-to' manual for beginners.

It is possible that even this simple manual may seem somewhat daunting for a priest born and raised in the reign of the liturgical books of Pope Paul VI. Precise instructions as to where and when and how to join one's hands or bow one's head could seem quite foreign to one's liturgical practice hitherto. Using liturgical Latin may seem impossible. If this is the case, I have but one suggestion - give it time. Yes, remembering when and how to make several signs of the cross will involve a certain self-consciousness at first. Venturing into an unknown language is at first not easy. Whilst ritual and liturgical prayer are not supposed to be an exercise in anxiety or a test of intellect or memory, some learning and practice and memorisation are required. But in time, the individual rites and prayers having been learned, and indeed their purpose, spirit and language having been absorbed, a priest will come to experience the whole rite itself taking shape. It is then that a priest new to this use will perceive its power and its beauty as liturgical prayer and understand first hand why our Holy Father has so wisely and clearly insisted that this treasure be freely available once again.

In Howard Finster: The Early Years, Thelma Bradshaw (Finster's daughter) provides an informative, intimate memoir and tribute to her 80 year old father's life and work. The reader is treated to rare and previously unpublished family photos of Finster in Trion, Georgia, along with his early work. Howard Finster: The Early Years is a welcome contribution to American art history and highly recommended reading for those who appreciate his original artistic visions -- including his "Paradise Garden", which is an incredible maze of found-object art and sculpture which he created near his home in Summerville, Georgia.

Superb brief summary of human evolution
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-05
In just under 200 pages, JL Bradshaw, an Australian neuroscientist, presents a clearly written view of the evolution of the human mind. No pop sociobiology material here; the book fairly summarizes a large amount of research on topics ranging from the hominid fossil record to the evolution of language, tool use and social intelligence. If you want to get a quick handle on these issues, this book is highly recommended.
