Explains the most common hazards confronting canoeists

River Safety: A Floater's Guide examines actual floating accidents, then moves on to identify and explain the most common hazards confronting canoeists. Author Stan Bradshaw draws upon more than twenty-five years of experience and eleven years of teaching canoeing safety to show how the vast majority of fatal river accidents are easily avoidable if canoeists follow a few basic, simple rules. From "reading the water" and identifying river hazards, to basic principals and techniques of river navigation, to fundamentals of river rescue and a thorough discussion of clothing and equipment, River Safety is highly recommended reading. Enhanced with equipment and first aid kit check lists, a section on important knots for river runners, and an extensive directory of river running courses offered throughout North American, River Safety is a "must" for the novice canoeist and has much of significant value for even the seasoned river floater.

I'm an open ocean paddler and thought I could handle an upcoming river trip without any fuss; but this book brings to light in an easy to read format the great need that even the most experienced of paddler has to properly prepare for the calmest of water journeys on the best of days. I'm very greatful for the river reading techniqes Bradshaw discribes and for the true stories of people who lost their lives because they weren't prepared. With so many people getting out on the water these days, books like this are essential and will save many lives.

One of Dobyn's Best

Fleshpot is one of Dobyn's best books! It is narrated by Victor Plotz (call me Vic) - who is much funnier than Charlie Bradshaw (Dobyn's main character in the Saratoga books). Vic is a funny, wise-cracking kinda guy and his adventures kept me amused and interested. If you haven't read Dobyn yet - read Fleshpot - and if you are a Dobyn fan, you've probably already read it - and enjoyed it.

Very improbable, Totally fun!

Murder writers seem to need to have multiple murders and danger for main characters at end. This is no exception, but the main characters are so irreverent and so much fun that one can laugh at the genre while enjoying twists and turns. Setting in Saratoga works; this book is much better than "Saratoga Haunting" by same author.

Computational philosophy of science will define twenty-first philosophy of science, and it has already started. This book by Herbert Simon, Nobel laureate and one of the founders of artificial intelligence, describes several computerized discovery systems created under Simon's direction at Carnegie-Melon University in the 1980's.

In his book titled Novum Organon Francis Bacon had expressed the view that with a few easily learned rules or a method it may be possible for anyone undertaking scientific research to be successful. Today Bacon's agenda is called proceduralization for computerized mechanization, and it is appropriate therefore that one of the most extraordinary discovery systems - Pat Langley's - should be named BACON.

The BACON discovery system is actually a set of successive and increasingly sophisticated discovery systems that make quantitative empirical laws and theories. Given sets of observation measurements for two or more variables, BACON searches for functional relations among the variables. The original version was designed and implemented by Pat Langley in 1979 as the thesis for his Ph.D. dissertation at Carnegie-Mellon department under Simon's direction.

System BACON has rediscovered several historically significant empirical laws including Boyle's law of gases, Kepler's third planetary law, Galileo's law of motion of objects on inclined planes, Boyle's ideal gas law, Coulomb's law of electrical current, Ohm's law of electrical circuits, Archimedes law of displacement, Black's law of specific heat, Newton's law of gravitation, the law of conservation of momentum, and the laws describing chemical reactions formulated by Dalton, Gay-Lussac, and Comizzaro.

Other discovery systems also described in this book are: System GLAUBER named after the eighteenth century chemist, Johann Rudolph Glauber, who contributed to the development of the acid-base theory. System STAHL named after the German chemist, Georg Ernst Stahl, who developed the phlogiston theory of combustion. System DALTON named after John Dalton, who developed the atomic theory of matter.

Readers interested in more commentary on Simon are invited to Google my book titled History of Twentieth-Century Philosophy of Science at my com web site named philsci on the Internet for free downloads.

A must reading for all who work with computers

A book which opens a new direction in mankind's outlook towards itself. Talks about how the ultimate quality, namely the creativity, which distinguishes humans from all the animals, is not unique. Should be compulsory reading for all students of computers, if not everybody. Hundred years form now, scientists will call this the first book ever published.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is tired of struggling with the question of how to fix what is wrong with you, and would welcome the opportunity to relax into the joy of finding out that you are already all that you need to be! Dr. Patenaude believes that everyone is capable of having a fulfilled and fulfilling life, and the key to having this fulfilled life is to find your way back to your "original self". Dr. Patenaude offers many examples of how we become trapped in old and detrimental behaviors that act to sabotage us by providing vignettes from her client base as well as referencing her own struggles toward her original self. The book is more than just explanations and advice - practical exercises have been provided to assist us in finding our way back. It's a great book, highly readable, highly effective!.

Zoo-phonics is a wonderful, highly effective method to teach toddlers through 3rd grade students how to read and spell. Kids love it. It is playful. They actually ask to play "Zoo-phonics"! Used in thousands of schools all over U. S. and in other counties.

It is the manual to the whole series.

This book is included in the Basic Kits. You all may not know this, but Zoo-phonics is a whole reading and spelling program. They use animals that match the letters of the alphabet, use kids wiggles and giggles. It takes a children from pre-school through 3rd grade - and in Spanish too. Look for their web site.

This book goes into more extensive vocabulary, including blends, the schwa sound (a and the) and digraphs. Kids need decodable text. The animals are wonderfully drawn, story lines sweet and simple. The animals become friends to children.

The beginning of a long love of fantasy
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-11
I read the book in two days during seventh grade. It was and still is one of my favorite books of all time. I am now 18 and and avid reader of fantasy from Tolkien to Jordan to Feist (my favorite) and I am currently 50 pages into a fantasy book I am writing. The characterization in Beyond the North Wind from the Griffins to the poet are strong enough to still be with me. Do yourself a favor and read this book. If you are a parent, do not let your child dive into the ocean of Harry Potter without reading this book.
