Not what you think, but still interesting...Review Date: 2005-09-13
"Dwarf & Unusual Conifers Coming of Age: A Guide to Mature Garden Conifers" appears to be a self-published (and self-designed) guide to the remarkable collection of conifers originally assembled by New Jersey businessman William Gotelli and transferred, legally and physically, to the USNA in 1962. Existing material on this collection is incomplete and scattered, so a guide to the collection and its individual specimens is a valuable addition to the literature, and a great help for visitors.
The book falls short in several regards. Its design and typography are not up to professional publishing standards. Distracting and inconsistent, they obscure the very real informational value of the descriptive, historical, and cultural sections. The photography is adequate, but does not do justice to the specimens, and lackluster reproduction values diminish its value further. There are numerous errors of spelling and nomenclature (Botanical nomenclature is admittedly complicated and prone to error, but this book has more than its share.) Finally, the target audience for this book is somewhat unclear. It is too detailed and intimate for the casual visitor, and insufficiently serious and authoritative for the true expert.
These defects aside, " Dwarf & Unusual Conifers Coming of Age" fills an interesting gap in the lore of collectable conifers. The history of the Gotelli collection, and especially the photos of Gotelli's original plantings, are fascinating. The panoramic views of the current beds are very useful to the contemporary visitor. Finally, the sections on culture and integrated pest management, largely authored by USNA staff, provide practical and tested advice for growers and collectors. For serious conifer enthusiasts, this book is probably a must-have, since much of the material presented is not available elsewhere. Others should be guided by the real focus of the book - if they plan to visit, or have visited, the Gotelli Collection in Washington, DC, this book will add significant value to the experience. I'm still waiting for a definitive guide to mature forms of dwarf and unusual conifers.

too bigReview Date: 2008-11-03
This book may be ideal to a teacher, but as a student I found it very cumbersome to work through, it's as thick as a brick!
By the time you work through this book you would have been able to complete Chiang's book Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics, which has much deeper coverage than Bradley and gives you professional preparation for postgraduate work in economics.
Even better, this 600+ page book could have been shrunk down to the same size as Mavron's book Elements of Mathematics for Economics and Finance of ~340 pages.
Now, there's efficiency.
That's my point, why 600 pages when it can be covered in 300?
It is not efficient use of space, just waste of time.
This said, I still give it 3 stars because it does explain the concepts in an excellent way - I never had any problems understanding the material.
But please, for the sake of all students, abridge it for the next edition!
Good book for Professors and StudentsReview Date: 2007-01-03
I consider this book to be one of the best. It covers the most important mathematical concepts and techniques such as functions, differentiation, partial differentiation, integration, differential equations, financial mathematics. In all the chapters the reader will find several progress exercises adequate to an introductory level.
The authors clearly show a great deal of concern with the economic applications. This is one of the best aspects of this book: for every mathematical technique explained, the authors present several economic applications.
If you are an undergraduate student of Economics or Business you will find this book extremely useful. If you are a Professor you will discover several interesting examples of mathematical applications to Economic analysis.

A most valuable addition to Cherokee language scholarship!Review Date: 2006-01-14
To my mind, this has always made suspect the language families anthropologists have used to classify indigenous languages as a basis for speculation about lineages and historical migrations.
Mrs. Holmes new monograph is a welcome departure from this pattern. Holmes (whose collaboration with native Cherokee speaker Betty Sharp Smith produced the wonderful Beginning Cherokee (q.v.) also published by the OU Press, but in 1976) has used the Reverend Samuel Worcester's 19th-century Syllabary translations of the Lord's prayer, the four Nicene-approved gospels, and eighteen of the psalms of David to provide the basis for this monograph-the most valuable linguistic and grammatical treatise on the Cherokee language I have yet to see.
In choosing these particular texts, she follows in the footsteps of the 18th- and 19th-century German pioneers in the Indo-European philology that eventually evolved into present-day linguistics. She is a worthy successor to those giants!
Among the felicities Holmes incorporates is the use of Roman letters rather than the Sequoyah syllabary. While the Syllabary codes the language better, it is most useful to native speakers. Roman characters add accessibility for the rest of us.
I believe that this oeuvre constitutes the basis for a definitive grammar of the Cherokee language and look forward to its appearance (soon, I hope, since Holmes is in her eighth decade).
In sum, a most valuable addition to Cherokee language scholarship!

A Summary Appraisal of a Great LeaderReview Date: 2001-07-26
If you want a more thorough account of this truly exceptional and interesting leader, read Paratrooper: the Life of James M. Gavin by T. Michael Booth, Duncan Spencer. It is well researched and gives a more thorough representation of Gavin's life, although Mrs. Gavin claims the book gives short shrift to Gavin's time at Arthur D. Little as the CEO.
If you are more interested in a cursory review of Gavin's life, then Bigg's rendition is for you. You can read it in an evening.

A good resource for intermediate inkle weaversReview Date: 2002-10-15
basic information is only adequate, but she expands on the basics and has some interesting and useful innovations. She includes some tricks for warping and finishing ends which make the completed band look neater. Bradley also shows how to use pick-up techniques to make every letter of the alphabet, so that you can include words in your work. Illustrations consist of diagrams and black and white photos.
