Many gardening topics are covered with great close-up, step-by-step pictures. There are a lot of ideas for garden lay-outs and hard structures such as patios, walkways and fences. This is a great book for beginners and has good ideas for the more advanced also.

Great for beginners, EXCEPT...

I bought this book because I'm moving into a new home with a COMPLETELY undeveloped yard, and I've never stuck hands in soil before. This book was absolutely wonderful in it's designing ideas, and its explanations of what plants do well where. However, my only complaint is that the appendix detailing different species of plants only gives their scientific names in the headings... to get the "real" name (that people like ME would understand) you have to read through the whole paragraph about it. While reading the book cover to cover may be the best way, someone like me with little time would like as many shortcuts as possible.

Dr. Carey's Book takes a lookat varous "christian" and "secular" groups and uses their own writings to show why those who find themselves drawn to these groups should take a serious look at their beliefs and dig a little deeper to find out what they really beleive. On a more flippnat side it also provides points of arguement when these groups come to you with their beliefs (like when you bored and want to take you time in getting rid of Jehovahs witnesses). It is too bad how ever that this book is a pared down version of the original which was the Authors Doctors thesis.

Makes You think... Clever

I found this book to be insightful and helpful in that it saves you time from having to read tons of other books and adds Dr. Carey's spin on things as well. It gives you clever anticdotes about J.W.'s and how to get rid of them if they keep bothering you. It's well written and definitely worth a read if you want to learn more about cults, religions and the myths out there too...

The title of this book is misleading, although perhaps not intentionally so. A more accurate title would have been, "Dwarf and Unusual Conifers in the Gotelli Collection of the United States National Arboretum". (What this title lacks in elegance it makes up for in accuracy.)

"Dwarf & Unusual Conifers Coming of Age: A Guide to Mature Garden Conifers" appears to be a self-published (and self-designed) guide to the remarkable collection of conifers originally assembled by New Jersey businessman William Gotelli and transferred, legally and physically, to the USNA in 1962. Existing material on this collection is incomplete and scattered, so a guide to the collection and its individual specimens is a valuable addition to the literature, and a great help for visitors.

The book falls short in several regards. Its design and typography are not up to professional publishing standards. Distracting and inconsistent, they obscure the very real informational value of the descriptive, historical, and cultural sections. The photography is adequate, but does not do justice to the specimens, and lackluster reproduction values diminish its value further. There are numerous errors of spelling and nomenclature (Botanical nomenclature is admittedly complicated and prone to error, but this book has more than its share.) Finally, the target audience for this book is somewhat unclear. It is too detailed and intimate for the casual visitor, and insufficiently serious and authoritative for the true expert.

These defects aside, " Dwarf & Unusual Conifers Coming of Age" fills an interesting gap in the lore of collectable conifers. The history of the Gotelli collection, and especially the photos of Gotelli's original plantings, are fascinating. The panoramic views of the current beds are very useful to the contemporary visitor. Finally, the sections on culture and integrated pest management, largely authored by USNA staff, provide practical and tested advice for growers and collectors. For serious conifer enthusiasts, this book is probably a must-have, since much of the material presented is not available elsewhere. Others should be guided by the real focus of the book - if they plan to visit, or have visited, the Gotelli Collection in Washington, DC, this book will add significant value to the experience. I'm still waiting for a definitive guide to mature forms of dwarf and unusual conifers.

One of the few really excellent books on conifers

This book is a rare work of art. The extensive and excellent photography shows plants in garden settings; photos are numerous and clearly defined. The cultural descriptions, including things like explanations, size, form, zone and suggestions for companion plantings are also very well written-complete and easy to understand. If you are a serious landscaper or love unusual conifers, this reference book is a MUST!

I used an earlier edition of this book for a class in mathematics for economics.

This book may be ideal to a teacher, but as a student I found it very cumbersome to work through, it's as thick as a brick!

By the time you work through this book you would have been able to complete Chiang's book Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics, which has much deeper coverage than Bradley and gives you professional preparation for postgraduate work in economics.

Even better, this 600+ page book could have been shrunk down to the same size as Mavron's book Elements of Mathematics for Economics and Finance of ~340 pages.
Now, there's efficiency.

That's my point, why 600 pages when it can be covered in 300?
It is not efficient use of space, just waste of time.

This said, I still give it 3 stars because it does explain the concepts in an excellent way - I never had any problems understanding the material.
But please, for the sake of all students, abridge it for the next edition!

Good book for Professors and Students

I am a teacher of Introductory Mathematics for Economics. Traditionally, it is not very easy to find good introductory books of Mathematical Economics.

I consider this book to be one of the best. It covers the most important mathematical concepts and techniques such as functions, differentiation, partial differentiation, integration, differential equations, financial mathematics. In all the chapters the reader will find several progress exercises adequate to an introductory level.

The authors clearly show a great deal of concern with the economic applications. This is one of the best aspects of this book: for every mathematical technique explained, the authors present several economic applications.

If you are an undergraduate student of Economics or Business you will find this book extremely useful. If you are a Professor you will discover several interesting examples of mathematical applications to Economic analysis.

We bought this as a gift for an extended family member; we were thrilled to find such a resource in Cherokee. The gift went over extremely well, but the only negative was that when we placed the order in November hoping to receive it for Christmas it didn't ship until after Jan 1st.

A most valuable addition to Cherokee language scholarship!

Most of the classical publications on languages indigenous to the western hemisphere are concerned more with inferences about exotic world views, often based on inaccurate understanding of what the authors have heard from their informants (viz. anthropologist Frank Boaz' observation that there were four "Eskimo" words for snow, which has metamorphosed into the oft-repeated contention that the Inuit have 400 (!) and the the "Sapir-Whorf hypothesis" based, in part, Whorf's inability to identify any tenses in Hopi) than with its grammar or lexicon.

To my mind, this has always made suspect the language families anthropologists have used to classify indigenous languages as a basis for speculation about lineages and historical migrations.

Mrs. Holmes new monograph is a welcome departure from this pattern. Holmes (whose collaboration with native Cherokee speaker Betty Sharp Smith produced the wonderful Beginning Cherokee (q.v.) also published by the OU Press, but in 1976) has used the Reverend Samuel Worcester's 19th-century Syllabary translations of the Lord's prayer, the four Nicene-approved gospels, and eighteen of the psalms of David to provide the basis for this monograph-the most valuable linguistic and grammatical treatise on the Cherokee language I have yet to see.

In choosing these particular texts, she follows in the footsteps of the 18th- and 19th-century German pioneers in the Indo-European philology that eventually evolved into present-day linguistics. She is a worthy successor to those giants!

Among the felicities Holmes incorporates is the use of Roman letters rather than the Sequoyah syllabary. While the Syllabary codes the language better, it is most useful to native speakers. Roman characters add accessibility for the rest of us.

I believe that this oeuvre constitutes the basis for a definitive grammar of the Cherokee language and look forward to its appearance (soon, I hope, since Holmes is in her eighth decade).

In sum, a most valuable addition to Cherokee language scholarship!

Not as thoroughly investigated as 'Paratrooper' by Michael T. Booth, but Ltcol (ret) Bradley Biggs, a former 555 PIB 'Triple Nickle' officer gives a rather short but good account of Gavin's life. The accent of the book is heavy to the late 50-s and Gavins time as ambassador to France and CEO of Arhtur Little and Co.
A nice tribute for a general who integrated the black Triple Nickles into his beloved 505 PIR in 1947.

A Summary Appraisal of a Great Leader
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-26
Gavin, I love the man, but the book is a biased (albeit the author acknowledges his bias) and under-researched account of a complex leader. Gavin was an orphan raised in Pennsylvania who earned an appointment to West Point after enlisting in the Army. He rose to become the Division Commander of the 82nd Airborne Division (the youngest Brigadier General since Custer)during WWII and amassed an incredible war record. Following the war, he rose to the rank of 3 stars before retiring amid a controversy over his testimony before the senate. As the division commander, he fully integrated black airborne soldiers into the 82nd. He would later become JFK's ambassador to France. He protested the war in Vietnam and wrote several books.

If you want a more thorough account of this truly exceptional and interesting leader, read Paratrooper: the Life of James M. Gavin by T. Michael Booth, Duncan Spencer. It is well researched and gives a more thorough representation of Gavin's life, although Mrs. Gavin claims the book gives short shrift to Gavin's time at Arthur D. Little as the CEO.

If you are more interested in a cursory review of Gavin's life, then Bigg's rendition is for you. You can read it in an evening.

Airborne!

Beginners should rely on Helene Bress' book, with its more detailed instructions on how to begin. Bradley's
basic information is only adequate, but she expands on the basics and has some interesting and useful innovations. She includes some tricks for warping and finishing ends which make the completed band look neater. Bradley also shows how to use pick-up techniques to make every letter of the alphabet, so that you can include words in your work. Illustrations consist of diagrams and black and white photos.

A great source for learning pick-ups

This is a great book for learning how to do pick-ups on the inkle loom. For each type of pick-up (horizontal, pebble weave, etc) she provides step-by-step advice. The Bress book assumed that you knew how to create a pattern. Lavinia doesn't do that. She steps you through each row from horizontal background pick-ups to pebble weave. Easy to read charts are included.
After a frustrating time, someone recommended this book to me and now I wonder why I thought it was so hard.
I highly recommend this book!

Review Date: 1998-05-05
I found the book in a Utah bookstore the same weekend I first visited the town. We were staying with a family that we had business with. We were not aware the town is polygamous but were able to figure it out fairly quickly. Later we told the folks we had stayed with about the book and they had never heard of it. We loaned them our copy and one comment they made was the number of innaccuracies listed. None of them were particularly major but they were numerous. We were favorably impressed by the people we met. My wife visited there again last year and stayed for nearly two weeks. She says that the depiction of the community in the book really doesn't match what she saw during her stay. We did feel that the book didn't take a "mainline" Mormon viewpoint versus the community's minority viewpoint.
