VERY Hot!!!! Both Rajan and Kian are men who know women. These two stories revolve around a fantasy: being in a time and place where sexual freedom prevails and a man who is very educated in sex and pleasure worships the women. If such places exist in the real world - that would definitely be worth a girl only vacation!!!
My only dissatisfaction with both stories is the very common pattern I am noticing with these types of stories: BOTH of these men are non-white, both are descendents of Africa = These men are men of color. Guess what? There are many black men with "golden skin" as described in these stories.
It would have been much more realistic if the women of these stories were NOT fair skin, hair and eyes. These stories would have had more kick if writers would make the women taupe or toffee complexioned and voluptuous.

My god, so hot !!!!!

Oh my god, this is so hot !!!
Trust me, you will feel everything those men are doing to those women. I have not finished yet and I can not stop reading it.
I am going to buy other books from the same author, that is for sure !

At the end of the day, nothing is more important than making a profit in your business! After all, that ensures you get to survive and, if you are smart, to thrive!

I got a lot out of this book because it cuts very directly to the core of business success--monitor your margins and spending so that you have more money left over. Brad Sugars discusses the 4 M's of Profit and covers a number of simple strategies that every business owner can implement to improve their profits. By the way, this area of the business is the easiest to fix, at little or no cost, and is often the first place to start as improvements show results very quickly. You must read this book and apply the learning!

Criticisms on The Scarlet Letter

Review Date: 2008-07-12
The book includes great critical essays for students who study the novel. I particularly appreciate the essay about Pearl which offers insight into Hawthorne's development of this character based on his struggles with his own daughter. I use these writings in my AP classes, and they are helpful to those pursuing an in-depth study of The Scarlet Letter.

Good, but not a great classic...

Well, I read this in my Intro to Lit class. It was right after Frankenstein, so perhaps that made me like the book more than I normally would. Or maybe it was just Hawthorne's writing style. He tells us the story of Hester, a woman forced to wear the scarlet A for adultery in early Puritan America. How did they know she committed adultery? Her husband had not yet joined her in America and suddenly, she's pregnant. She refuses to reveal the father of her child. For the next couple of years we follow Hester, her daughter Pearl as she grows up isolated, and Pearl's father as well as Hester's newly returned husband...who has a new identity. Sometimes Hawthorne got so descriptive he went off-track, but for the most part, it's quite an interesting, almost soap opera storyline.

Putting Morals to the Test

The Scarlet Letter puts even the most morally secure people's beliefs to the test. The line between what is really sin and what is "different" in this novel is one that most cannot define at the end of finishing this book. It makes the reader think about the choices in their own life, and the choices they would make in situations such as those of Hester Prynne, Dimmsdale, and little Pearl. The Scarlet Letter has a wonderful way of depicting the exclusiveness of the early Puritans that is not outwardly horrible, but chips away at the patience of the reader until their feelings towards the Puritans are nothing but distain. The novel uses light and dark in ways that subconsciously show what is Godly and reverent and what is evil and sin. So many elements in The Scarlet Letter just capture the reader into wanting more, and I recommend this book to anyone who wants to challenge their beliefs.

I first read this book in high school, and i didn't like it much, which was surprising because i really enjoy Hawthorne's short fiction. i again picked it up recently, and found that loved it. There no doubt that it is a difficult book to read, Hawthorne requires the reader to think as he reads. everything is symbolic of something in this book. Hawthorne has a mastery of the language that you just don't see anymore. think this is one we should re-read every few years, as we mature. I got the Norton edition, which helps a little with understanding the story, but most of the articles were not that helpful.

This was an interesting book. I liked the plot, but the author really needed to wrap up those words that I didn't understand. I mean, I can define any one of the words in the book, save few, but using about 5 of them in one sentence just makes me too confused to try to get into the story like I normally do.

As I go through the Darkover books in the order in which they were written, the quality of MZB's writing continues to improve, but the stories seem repetitive. A person from Earth comes to Darkover, is drawn unexpectedly into adventure, and subsequently decides that Darkover is his true home. The Spell Sword is no exception to this pattern.
I did enjoy this book, partly because (as I implied) it is better written than most of what came before it. Here, we meet Damon Ridenow, a bookish Darkovan who is caught off guard when he and his traveling companions are ambushed by mysterious, invisible attackers. Meanwhile, a Terran named Andrew has crash landed in the nearby mountains, and visions of a woman lead him to safety -- and to Damon Ridenow. Together, they do battle with the powerful, invisible foes who attacked Damon and who are besieging and terrorizing Darkovan towns, holding hostage the woman of Andrew's visions.
These foes are certainly the weak point of the book: we know they are "cat people" and that they've discovered a matrix crystal that gives them great and dangerous power, including that of invisibility. But a mysterious enemy should only be mysterious to a point, if you want them to be interesting. Their motives and their physical characteristics (they aren't always invisible) are left so ill-defined that I found myself imagining a bunch of Felix The Cats with evil grins attacking our protagonists. The cat people never become scary nor interesting.
The Spell Sword is another readable, but somehow lacking, Darkover book.

Andrew Carr is part of the Mapping and Exploration team which is charting the planet of Darkover for the newly-arrived Terran Empire. Like all Earthmen, Andrew is cynical about psi powers, so he shrugs off a meeting with an old fortuneteller in the Spaceport's trade city who shows him a beautiful red-headed girl in her crystal ball.

What Andrew doesn't know is that this dim, cold world is filled with people with vast psychic powers they call "laran" or "donas", and Andrew himself has been suppressing his potential in the noisy, crowded empire. After his plane crashes in the icy mountains, Andrew receives visions of the lovely Callista, who has been kidnapped by nonhumans. The Earthman must overcome his prejudices and inner mental blocks to aid her kinsman in her rescue, then ultimately find his place between the two worlds.

Classic Bradley. I take out my well-worn paperbacks and re-read them every couple of years.

from the back cover of the September 1974 Daw paperback edition

Although Darkover was a world inhabited by humans as well as semi-humans, it was primarily forbidden ground to the Terran traders. Most of the planet's wild terrain was unexplored...and many of its peoples seclusive and secretive.
But for Andrew Garr there was an attraction he could not evade. Darkover drew him, Darkover haunted him-and when his mapping plane crashed in unknown heights, Darkover prepared to destroy him.
Until the planet's magic asserted itself-and his destiny began to unfold along lines predicted only by phantoms and wonder workers of the kind Terran science could never acknowledge.

The story line is so exciting, and the characters so lovable. A person can't help but get into it, and have a hard time not thinking about the story or wondering what's next. It took no time at all to read the book, partly because of the suspense and partly because it's only 156 pages. It's an excellent appetizer, some of her other books are longer, but from the three that I've read they all seem to have the same effect.

"The Spell Sword" is another Darkover novel by Marion Zimmer Bradley. This one is set sometime after the Terran Empire rediscovered Darkover. Now there are both the Darkovan natives, as well as men from Terra living on Darkover. This novel begins in a way that we have seen several times before: with a crash of a Terran vehicle on Darkover. This time it is from a team based at the Terran outpost at Thendara. Andrew Carr is a member of the Mapping and Explorations team that is slowly gathering information about Darkover. In a winter storm, the plane crashed and it was only through what Andrew thought was a hallucination that he was able to survive for very long in the storm. Andrew had visions of a woman named Callista guiding him away from the plane and to safety, but he had difficulty believing that these visions might be true. Eventually, Carr does come to accept that the vision is more than a hallucination, but someone communicating with him.

Damon Ridenow has been called to help find Callista, who has gone missing without a trace. Before Damon arrives at Callista's home he has to travel through someplace called "the darkened land" where the land is in shadows, uninhabitable and attacks can come from invisible assailants. Not a place you would want to spend much time. After passing through "the darkened land", Damon learns more about Callista's abduction and also meets Andrew Carr who was led there somehow by the vision of Callista. When Andrew and Damon discuss what has happened, they see the connection and that the only way to save Callista is by working together. Damon is surprised to discover that Andrew, a Terran, also has the potential to be a telepath, which Damon believed was a skill native to Darkover.

Throughout the Darkover series we hear that there are non-human races on the planet: the chieri and the cat-people. While we see the chieri once or twice, we have never seen the cat-people before and this was an area that I was interested in. For the most part, they are not developed as a race or as characters, except that we now know that some can be telepaths like humans (and chieri). We also know that they are mainly enemies of humans (though they have worked with the less reputable humans from the Dry Towns), though Damon does allow that their motives and culture are so far removed from human that it would be difficult to truly comprehend it.

This is a short novel, coming in less than 200 pages, but I found it to be fairly entertaining and I suspect that it sets the stage for the much longer "The Forbidden Tower" which features many of the same characters. "The Spell Sword" serves as introduction to Andrew Carr, Damon Ridenow, and Callista. It is fairly good for a fantasy novel, though it does not feature the depth of some. This is a straight forward story with some action.

This is a great book. I especially like the before chapter review. It is good to read before you read the rest of the chapter because you already have the basics down and are ready for the "nitty gritty" details. It is a bit brief however, and you may need to consult other sources if you want/need more information/explanation.

This was the Physio book my Vet Phys class used. It is absolutely amazing. There is tons of info, yet it is interesting and somewhat easy to read. The chapters on Cardio are especially good, and there are many helpful diagrams.
The case examples at the end of each chapter really help you to apply your knowledge.
I gave only four stars because there are no color pictures.

This book is a must for any veterinary student. My class was using a human physiolgy book, which was very informative, but was frustrating to use. The textbook of Veterinary Physiology is easy to read and well organized and has many tables and illustrations to help you understand the material. There are even case studies in the book that help you apply the information. I gave this book 4 stars, because while very informative, it does leave out a few things (those topics can usually be found in a medical physiology book). Overall, this book is a very good supplementation to veterinary students whose classes use a medical physiology book as their primary text. The only other downer (this is minor) is that the tables and diagrams are all black and white. Color diagrams would be a nice upgrade in the next edition.

A Tool In Understanding - A Good Book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-14
For a small book it is highly valuable with the basics in understanding of the liberal and conservative ideas. In this there are two authors, one, Bradley O'Leary - Conservative and Victor Kamber - Liberal, so the book is not bias, but fair. And in this they both argue their view on some of the major issues - very briefly that is, but enough for you to get the general ideas.

This book comes with three separate quizzes in determining where you stand. I stood a liberal before the book and after the quizzes I again stand somewhere between liberal and moderate liberal. I think that every book that fairly compares these two models of thought exposes the invalidity of conservative thinking and for this a book like this threatens their morality based on absolutism.

Also is a wonderful short essay on both venues of thought and its comparison to libertarianism, which I believe is much closer to conservatism.

I like this book enough to purchase a dozen or so copies and hand them out to reasonable people I care about and enjoy talking with. As small as this book is, it really is a classifier and eye opener, which removes much of the thoughtless cloud of the media where thousands watch and have not a clear conception of the differences between such thought systems.

Another book that is much more detailed and goes into the psychological models between conservatives and liberals is "Moral Politics" by George Lakoff, which I highly recommend.

A nice book to read to get the facts straight!

I bought this book because I got into an argument with a friend of mine who prides himself on being a republican, whereas I have always voted democrat. (Not this time though. I voted Libertarian.) We took the tests, and yes his political spectrum is more to the right of me, but we both learned a few things about where we stood. There are three tests in the book. In the first test, somehow I came out MODERATELY CONSERVATIVE. (My friend was CONSERVATIVE, one more click to the right of me) The second test marked me MODERATELY LIBERAL, while my friend didn't take that test. The last one was LIBERAL for me while my friend was MODERATE TO CONSERVATIVE. More to the point, you learn a lot and you take a lot of disbelief in what both authors have to say. You'll likely like one point of view and not the other for all areas in this book, but that's life and that's America. BTW After reading this and thinking about it, I've declared myself socially very liberal while more fiscally moderate.

A good book

I read this book, and I feel it can help the novice to the political arena in knowing what is the conservative or the liberal side of issues. The book allows you to know the other side's arguments about an issue.By doing so, it can make you have a better understanding of the issues. I feel the linear political spectrum is still good to measure anyone's point of view politically including even where libertarians are. I feel the tests are good ones, but I feel a better way of finding out where you stand is to divide the issues more into broad categories such as economic, social, domestic reform, military and foreign liberalism. I was rated as being moderate, but I was rated as a moderate because i am really an economic liberal, a social moderate,a liberal on domestic reform.a military conservative and a foreign moderate. If 0 is liberal,1 is moderate and 2 is conservative, I would score out of a possible 10(most conservative) a 4,just left of center. A libertarian could score himself the same way.The book is on the right track, no libertarian should mind this book. It has all views covered.By the way I scored a 20-middle of the road, but i now know what issues i am liberal on and what i am conservative on. It's a nice book, both the novice or the politically experienced can learned something from this book.A good 4 star rating.

Great choice of issues! Take the test; you may be surprised!

Victor Kamber and Bradley O'Leary offer a superb point-counterpoint of some of the most talked about issues of the day. Issues from health care and the minimum wage, all the way to the religious right and Contra-Aid. These men offer insights to the issues, and argue their positions forcefully. Yes, these men are biased at times...but this makes it all the more exciting to read, and helps the reader latch onto which writer they agree with.

In addition, this book offers three tests for the readers themselves to find out where they stand on the political spectrum. Are you really a "sit on the fence" centrist? Take the test, and you may find otherwise.

Anyone interested in politics should read this book. Three cheers for Kamber and O'Leary!

Geared for the Political Novice

Review Date: 1999-04-25
Most individuals who understand both the political landscape and issues of the day, will attain little new knowledge from this book. Most likely one so astute in the realm of politics already knows his own political persuasion. The issues discussed in the book seem to be unenlightening; nothing more than the overused rhetoric of every issue from abortion to welfare. Neither conservatives nor liberals will feel their views have been properly pronounced or defended. The test re-affirms only the obvious (unless you were confused about your views). The book's tests seem to be rather inconsistent. On some tests one may be slighty conservative and on another one may prove to be slightly liberal or even more firmly conservative. They also make the mistake of using the linear political spectrum. This does not account for libertarians, thus (with the issues predominantly being social ones) a libertarian may be ranked as a liberal! The tests also seem to confuse political and social views, asking questions about telivision shows and books. One can be more socially moderate and still hold a political extreme or vice-versa. Furthermore, some of the tests actually require advanced poltical or government knowledge that a political novice (whom the book is geared for) would have a hard time answering. The book does have a few positives. Unlike most political spectrum assesments, it does give more weight to certain issues (ie-your stance on school vouchers has less of a determining factor than your view on the size of government). It also does give some introductory information to those not well briefed on an issue. In conclusion, the book may be worth it to find the general political philosophy of yourself or friends and family, however, it is not the most accurate barometer in existence nor does it explain all issues in enough depth. An interesting concept but not incredibly well done.

This first volume of Peter Bagge's "Hate" comics (which were published between 1991-1994) exposes -literally- the lives of young Harold "Buddy" Bradley and his friends in 1990's Seattle. Buddy is an unpretentious, quiet guy with a low-end job, a troubled girlfriend, a gang of near-delirious friends and no clear perspectives on his future. "Buddy does Seattle" take us through everyday's struggles to survive, enjoy and ultimately make sense of things of Buddy and his friends. Although settled in specific coordinates (Seattle's 1990s) their tragedies, inquiries, virtues and miseries seem, directly or indirectly, all too common to many youth elsewhere (and retrospectively to many among us, the moderately elder). The plot is relentless, always funny and many times hilarious, and the drawings are little masterpieces on themselves. I work hard to try to delay my finishing this Vol. 1, and am delighted I still have Vol. 2, "Buddy does Jersey" coming up. Buddy Does Jersey: The Complete Buddy Bradley Stories from "Hate" Comics, Vol. II (1994-1998)

There's very little "wit" in Peter's humor. Rather, the humor comes from the realization that you were once like Buddy. He's got a dead end job, a couple of wacked out girlfriends, and a bum of a friend that somehow succeeds.

The art is crude in a unique way. Everything is shaded to extremes and none of the characters are good looking. Half of them don't even have eyes as far as you know. The emotions and thoughts come through clearly in the dialog however.

There's a lot of drama and anger between them all but they stay friends somehow. That makes Buddy a winner in a book about losers.

This collection includes the funniest issues from one of the all-time funniest comic books ever created. Peter Bagge is an absolute genius whose ear for dialogue and eye for details is unmatched. From the comic book fans arguing over Kelly vs. Kurtzmann to the garage rock band at rehearsal to the encounter with an old girlfriend, every detail rings hilariously true. If you've ever shared a cheap apartment with an assortment of weird roommates, you need to read this book, and as soon as possible. This is an all-time classic that will have you rolling on the floor with laughter.

Based on previous reviews, I ordered this book, but was disappointed. Maybe it's because I've read others that are far better: The Visual Handbook to Building and Remodeling, by Charles Wing, and Building An Affordable Home, by Ruiz. Both these books contain far more specific info. Building on a Shoestring includes such priceless advice as: "comparison shop." "The more bells and whistles you opt for, the more you'll pay." Even when info. is good, it's too vague, like "limit the amount of plumbing pipe you have to lay." How? Some of the info. is NOT cost-cutting, but actually increases costs: Install a shut-off valve at EVERY plumbing fixture; Build 16 inches on center rather than 24. This book goes in the Goodwill box.

This book helps you navigate around common pitfalls of home design and construction. Not just for new builds; it also contains a wealth of information on setting up kitchens, bathrooms, HVAC, plumbing, etc. This book is a quick, easy read, and you'll find yourself underlining lots of good hints. It could have been improved by including diagrams, especially when describing the "task triangle" of kitchen space. Although the cover makes it look dated, this book is surprisingly current, with web links and information on newly emerging materials and practices. Well written and well worth the price!

I agree with the previous reviews - this book was wonderfully written and extremely helpful. Building your own home can be a huge, daunting task - but the authors walk you through the process one small step at a time. They cover all the bases, and explain everything thoroughly and in an easy-to-understand way.

This is a fabulous how-to book that's well-written, well-organized, and extremely educational. It offers money saving tips for all aspects of the home building or renovating process, and takes the mystery out of financing, contracting, and internal systems like plumbing, heat, hot water, A/C, etc. I love how the authors keep a running tally of the money you're saving by following their tips, and the glossary, sample documents, and resource list are invaluable. Highly recommended for all home owners!

It's laid out in an easy to understand format and it feels like the authors are right there with you answering all the questions you'd ever had, as well as the ones you'd never even thought of. Keep your sanity, kill the fear! Go for your dreams - but not without this book!

R.I.P. Capt Tony

Capt Tony passed away at 92 the afternoon of Saturday November 1, 2008. I have not read the book, but certainly will. My family has a long history in Key West and as a young boy (35+) years ago, enjoyed fishing on the charter boat "Captain Tony". His stories will long be remembered.

This should not be simply described as a book, instead a true tale of how a man was changed by Captain Tony. I too had the honor of many nights hearing his stories and learning from him. Knowing Captain Tony was an inspiration and a life lesson. Brad's book was well written and well received. I feel he is a gifted author, and look forward to his next book. I considered Captain Tony a true friend, someone who always welcomed me to Key West and made me always want to come back. Brad's book accomplished it's mission, to immortalize the legend in one of history's greatest men. Thank you Brad, Tony trusted you, and you came through for him.

A Fantastic Book that Captures the True Captain Tony

Being fortunate enough to be a friend of Captain Tony and the Tarracino family, I read Brad Manard's Life Lessons of a Legend with eager anticipation, and I have to say that this book exceeded my wildest expectations! It is extremely well-written, and the descriptions and characterizations make the reader feel as if he or she is actually there in Key West with Captain Tony and Brad as the Captain shares his life and experiences with the younger Midwesterner. These two men hail from totally opposite backgrounds, one being a conservative, well-educated school superintendent from Iowa and the other being a school drop-out who ran from the mob in New Jersey and ended up as an adventurous fishing boat captain, gun-runner, womanizer, gambler, bar-owner and mayor in Key West, Florida. As the unlikely friendship was formed, it was the educator who learned the invaluable life lessons of compassion, of sharing words of kindness with others and of love of family from the hard-living yet kind-hearted Captain Tony. Throughout the book, the Captain tells, in his own words, many wonderful stories of his exciting life, going all the way back to his childhood and early days in Key West, including stories about his friendships with people such as Jimmy Buffett, Mel Fisher, and Shel Silverstein. This book is excellent and captures the true essence of the `Salt of Key West,' the legendary and beloved Captain Tony.

First and foremost, in his passing at the tender age of 92 on All Saint's Day 2008, I wish Capt. Tony an eternal life of blue sky sailing. As for the book, I must say I was disappointed. I was expecting, as stated on the back cover of the book, "a dramatic and insirping story collection of Captain Tony' Tarracino's remarkable journey from the ghettos of Elizabeth N.J., to becoming a living legend...." Instead, in my humble opinion, the Author spent too much ink on 'his' personal journey in the day (or week) of the then 87-year-old Sea Captain. I expected a 'full life' account, more of the regarding his life in Key West as a salty barowner & ranconteur. It seems half the book was attributed to Capt. Tony while the other half was attributed to the Author's trip and time with the Captain. I suspect that the way the book is written may be interesting to some readers. Based on the book's description, I interpretted it to be a "biography". But as a frequent traveler to the Southern Most City and hobbiest of its history, I was expecting more accounts and anecdotes on the colorful life of the Captain. Sorry! As Buffett sang....'there's still so much to be done(Told)!' Peace!

FORMER NBA PLAYER BILL BRADLEY TAKES US THROUGH SOME OF THE 1973-74 KNICKS SEASON, AS SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF BRADLEY, EARL MONROE, WILLIS REED AND DAVE DEBUSSCHURE. MOST OF IT IS INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTEN. IT IS NOT A TELL ALL OR CONTROVERSIAL BOOK BUT PRETTY MUCH A FACTS ONLY BOOK. SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE HOW THE PLAYERS SPEND THEIR DOWN TIME ON ROAD TRIPS, THE AVAILABILITY OF WOMEN WHO WILL SLEEP WITH JUST ABOUT ANY PLAYER, AND THE INNERPLAY OF THE KNICKS IN PRACTICE AND ON PLANES. I LIKED THIS BOOK BUT IT IS NOTHING GREAT AND IT IS BORING AT TIMES BUT STILL WORTH A PEEK.

He writes about being in the NBA but it's during the 70's when it was so different from now. Players didn't make mega millions then. I can't believe they would still have to do their own laundry and share a hotel room with someone on the team. But it's a nice glimpse into the 70's and professional basketball, I guess. The basketball writing is okay, I've read much better. His writing is pretty dead.

Bill Bradley's account of three weeks in the life of an NBA team in the '70's is as much a stunningly insightful social commentary as it is a nice, easily-rambling, "On the Road"-style ride. Beautiful.

After reading John McPhee's account of Bill Bradley's years at Princeton, I put the book down and thought it was too good to be true. No NBA player I've ever seen is THAT smart. But after reading Bradley's own Life on the Run, I recant. Bradley IS that smart, and he's a hell of a writer to boot. This one can be spoken about with the same kind of respect due the classic sports profiles, including McPhee's own Levels of the Game. I'm glad I took a chance on this book. It was a real pleasure.

A Trenchant Examination of Life as a Professional Athlete

Review Date: 1999-05-18
Bradley's memoir of the waning games in the New York Knicks' 1973-74 season (the season after they won their second NBA championship) contains many observations about professional sports that, unfortunately, continue to ring true today: the shameless exploitation of undereducated athletes by agents and comparable parasites; the intrinsic harshness of an itinerant existence during a roadtrip on the West Coast; the grueling physical and mental demands of the NBA regular season; the evanescent nature of fan support. Given all of the above, why then would anyone want to play NBA basketball? Well, Bradley also does a fine job of describing the many thrills an athlete can derive from, among other things, being exhalted by home fans; winning a championship; and being part of a selflless team unit that manages to sublimate individualistic tendancies in its pursuit of greater goals. Bradley's book, from what I can gather, was revolutionary for its time in that it eschewed the type of hagiographic approach that many writers took toward the world of professional sports and ablely demonstrated the myriad difficulties associated with being a player in the nation's largest media spotlight. It should be a must- read for all aspiring NBA players -- especially those players who are considering foregoing several (or all) years of their collegiate eligibilities to make a fast buck. They should be forewarned: "All that glitters isn't gold."
