"Unique collection of modern knitwear based on historical themes."

I've owned this book for several years. From when I first saw it in a bookstore, I had to have it.
Beautiful knitted creations. "Captured" historical periods with design styles and/or with colors. It also includes variations of the sweaters/jackets plus accessories chosen to enhance the styles.
The pictures of the actual knitted sweaters/jackets are clear and details are very clear. Then there are sketches showing the variations.
Patterns are well-written with clear diagrams.
If you are a knitter, you have to see Stitches in Time for yourself!

Beautifully Illustrated and a Nice Story to Boot
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-23
Ms. Weisman tells a nice story about a young Pueblo girl named Rama, who has moved to the city with her family. Rama has to watch her younger brothers while an older woman watches her from the top window of the building they live in. Rama befriends the woman and gives her a storyteller doll that had been given to her by her grandfather and by book's end the older woman is telling the children stories on a regular basis and they are tell her stories as well.

However, the real beauty of this book are the fine illustrations by Artist David Bradley. This book and his illustrations have been an important part of how my sister-in-law has shown my two wonderful nieces that we are not all the same. These girls are being raised, learning that different is different, not better, not worse, just different and that we have to accept people as they are. If we can all do that, than our future is rosy and bright. Five stars from Captain Katie.

Straight Talk for You

Review Date: 2008-05-15
For those individuals who could be classified as "seekers" (i.e., those seeking to learn about Christianity), this book serves as a first look at the basics of Christian beliefs. However, Str8 T@lk also serves as a "refresher course" for any Christian who desires to once again get in touch with his or her primary beliefs about Christianity.

Designed to appeal to today's college students, as witnessed by the unusual title, this publication addresses issues of interest to a wider audience, as these same issues can present points of conflict, question, and discussion faced by any Christian individually, or as a member of a community of believers. Pattengale begins with the most basic of Christian doctrines, addressing the Trinity, different Christian denominations, the Nicene Creed and Apostles' Creed, and variations in Christian faith traditions. Specific chapters focus on key concepts of Christianity: salvation, sanctification, morality and purity, vocation, evangelism, and discipleship, guiding the reader from personal to global applications of these key concepts.

Pattengale brings his classic historian's perspective of using primary sources as a foundation for Str8 T@lk. He bases the book on Christ's teachings as his primary source of material, using these central teachings as the basis for each chapter. Opening the chapters with a scriptural passage lays the groundwork for the information to follow, serving to focus the reader on the teachings of Christ which will be addressed in the text. Frequent scripture passages continue to underlie and amplify the information presented in the section titled Understand the Need, the core material of each chapter. (All New Testament passages are taken from the New International Version.)

In addition, the author opens each chapter with artistic black and white illustrations, which provide an added dimension to the information in the chapter. These art works serve to stimulate thought and reflection through their visual appeal, engaging one's natural sense of curiosity. The layout format and page arrangements grab and maintain reader interest. Personal vignettes represent one of the most interesting features of the book; these vignettes describe experiences from Pattengale's life, as well as insights from other authors. Predictability combined with surprise enhances readability, and provides variety to maintain the reader's interest.

Str8 T@lk is recommended for use with students in a variety of settings, including religion classes at the high school and college levels, bible study groups, and youth groups. The book would be especially effective as a springboard for discussions about issues with which young adults grapple on a daily basis.

Read in conjunction with other resources and with the Bible, Str8 T@lk represents a powerful source of information and affirmation for young adults seeking to discover meaning in scriptures, and to learn more about Christianity.

Great handbook for Physics students!

I am a Physics Ph.D. student and I have had this book since I was a freshman. It is the most useful book I bought as an undergrad. It has almost everything you need to know about math: geometry and trig reviews, integral tables, differentiation rules, limits, and series. Combine this book with The Cambridge Handbook of Physics Formulas by Woan, and you will have the best two-volume quick reference set available!

I originally took this book out of the library because of the beautiful photos. I liked the patterns and the instructions so much I decided to buy a copy for myself to make some of the sweaters for family and friends. The instructions and illustrations are clear and concise. The photos with alternate color arrangements are wonderful. The pattern grids are easy to understand. I highly recommend this book.

This edition has the Latin text printed on the left side, with the corresponding English translation on the right. A splendid resource for Classical students or anyone wishing to see the original text as well as the English meaning.

Another Great Anthology By MZ Bradley

Tenth in the fantasy anthology series, you will enjoy this just as much as the first. Many great stories by familiar authors and some newbies. Another Shin'a'in story where the story's subjects are "blessed" by a "good luck" medallion and another story where the helpless rape victim is not what she seems. If you like fantasy or sword & sorcery, you'll love the series of short stories about women warriors, women swordsmen and sorceress plus the occasional ordinary woman. One of my fav stories is about a shape shifter who is a rabbit and is embarrassed until she is thrown into a situation where rabbit skills excel!

Hope for the classics

This book helps prove that teaching the classics doesn't have to be boring. Teaching, as well as learning the classics can be a daunting task, but McKnight and Berlage break it down into meaningful, exciting and enriching lessons. I especially enjoy the information included about how to incorporate art and music into lessons of classic literature. I was surprised to find out how many modern songs are based on canonical texts. These and other lessons help connect students with texts that they would otherwise feel completely detached from.

I love these books and everyone that comes out for kids I buy at least two one for my own collection and one for whatever classroom my youngest is in. The pictures are great and the text that goes along with them are encouraging and humorous. I think every classroom needs a set of these books(3 so far). They seem to bring abstract ideas to a more concrete level in a fun and funny way.

5 stars based on one poem

A friend just sent me one poem from this book---"Leaving Kansas City." That poem captures something about Kansas City that hasn't been said as well since Edward Dahlberg wrote "Because I Was Flesh" in 1959. It's something impossible to explain to anyone who didn't grow up there.
"Leaving Kansas City" gets even better when it gets beyond Kansas City, into the territory that cross-country drivers headed for Colorado or California used to drive by night because there's "nothing to see," before air travel made it possible never to see it. I hope the other poems in the book are as good as this one.
