Probably best overview in print of this major artist

I stumbled onto Rodney Graham's retrospective show at MOCA in LA four years ago, and it changed my life a little bit.

Graham's work is intellectually powerful; he is one example of an artist that will continually shed light on his own work through explanatory notes. This book covers Graham's earliest exhibited works and plows through steadily to about 2004. Attention given to the formative stuff is really valuable, since he got little recognition outside of Canada before the late 90s. I think the artist is really in the midst of his prime right now, so it's not yet possible for a comprehensive monograph... but this comes pretty close.

great collection of papers and description of the career of a great statistician

Carl Morris is a contemporary of Efron's who was also a classmate of Efron at Cal Tech and later a collaborator on many articles especially in the area of empirical Bayes and Stein estimation methods. Carl describes Efron's career up to 1980. Rob Tibshirani was first a graduate student of Efron's and later they collaborated on a large number of articles and a book. Most of their work involved biostatistical applications and the use of bootstrap as a powerful statistical tool for solving such problems. He covers Efron's career from 1981 to the present.

This book was put together to include a selected number of his best papers which cover both applied and theoretical work including publications on exponential families of distributions, geometric probability, empirical bayes methods, computer intensive methods including the development of bootstrap methods and gene expression and microarray data analysis. Recently he has also devised an effective method for variable selection in regression that is based on least angle regression (LAR).

In addition all 131 of Brad's publications to date are listed and most of his graduate students supplied comments about Brad. This book is about the career and works of Brad Efron at the time of his 70th birthday. Efron has achieved many honors including most recently the 2005 National Medal of Science Award. Personally I took courses in Mathematical Statistics and Sequential Analysis from Efron. He was always a great teacher and mentor and he gave me tremendous encouragement as I wrote my book on bootstrap methods. All of us who knew and worked with Brad appreicated his humility, kindness and wit. This shows in many of the the descriptions supplied by former students.

The best book ever written on Atlantis
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.

It's not even a close call. This is easily the best book ever written on Atlantis. Speculation is kept to a minimum while scientific analysis prevails. Muck surveys ocean currents, plant and animal distributions and geological evidence and concldues that there is no other scientific explanation available---there must have been a large island or small continet in the Atlantic that has disappeared.

I absolutely loved this book when I found it in my local library. At first I was interested because Michael Bradley is my high school English teacher, but this book totally blew me away. It's very witty and humorous, and he uses a lot of highly imaginative analogies and metaphors. It has fast-paced action and some twists and turns that make you laugh and cry with it. There's nothin' but good stuff. Anyone who reads it would be puzzled as to why he only wrote two such books.

Exciting, stylish, imaginative action adventure....

Riley Barnett is doing well on her own in Toronto. She's in her second year at University and shares an apartment with a friend. Riley is a frugal, sensible girl whose life is mapped out through careful planning when an unexpected letter delivers action, adventure, and romance into her predictable life. An uncle she did not know has died in Newfoundland, leaving his property to Riley. The comfortable bungalow on Conception Bay is a dream home set in a beautiful, natural acreage. Before a week has passed while visiting her inherited home, Riley can't imagine living anywhere else. Doris Fudge, owner of a small country store, and her brother Charlie, a first class mechanic, are friendly and helpful. Jean Collins, a nearby neighbor, soon forges a fast friendship with Riley. And Paul Sutherland, who works for the local weather office, soon becomes much more than a friend. Friendship, passion, and natural wonders. Sounds idyllic, right?

Life on Conception Bay takes a dark turn soon after Riley settles into her new home. First, someone tries to shoot her. Then, intruders prowl her basement in the middle of the night. An anonymous person offers a huge amount of money for her property through a suspicious realtor. Riley is not easily intimidated, but before summer's end she's tempted to return to the relative safety of Toronto.

Several mysteries unravel before book's end. These revelations are not without surprises as Riley and Paul discover who really caused her uncle's death and what he was hiding on his property to inspire such greed and violence. Readers who love mystery, action, and adventure should relish this book. As with all Bradley's novels, the characters are deliciously defined and the narrative well-written. I consider the works of D. Edward Bradley to be gems, well worth discovering.
