In all of his books, Ian Bradley carefully avoids the oft-made mistake of whitewashing the Celtic Christian tradition, or the mistake of minimizing its vital significance in Church history. This insightful analysis of the tradition seeks to make history relevant for the present by outlining essential elements of the Celtic model of ministry, elements that could successfully meet the needs of a world tired of the structural complexity of the modern church and hungry for authentic spiritual renewal. In each of six chapters, Bradley presents the distinctively Celtic approaches to various aspects of ministry: Monasticism, Blessing/Cursing, Penance/Pastoral Care, Worship, Communion, and Pilgrimage. Each chapter begins with the historical presentation of the ministry methods as they existed in Celtic Britain, and concludes with a reflection on the relevance of such methods in the contemporary Western Church. I highly recommend this book, not only for academics seeking to know more about the rich legacy of Celtic spirituality, but also for church leaders who are serious about engaging in the conception of creative new models for ministry.

Writing on the subject of Celtic Christianity is beset with sentimentalism plus a generous dose of wishful thinking. Bradley's book is a sobering reflection on some of this writing - including his own! The author of "The Celtic Way" has had cause to stop and consider the scholarly accuracy of his previous work, something which takes great courage.

The result is this overview of a succession of Celtic revivals spanning from the 7th - 20th Centuries, including Victorian Celtic Romanticism. It is interesting that the first revival Bradley refers to is from the period which other popular commentators tend to include within the Age of the Celtic Church itself: 7th-9th Centuries. Yet Bede's nostalgia for a past era of holy and simple saints has a very familar ring to it!

The book concludes with the current revival and a whistlestop tour through the popular and scholarly writings that have sprung up recently, plus the wider cultural mainfestations of this such as Celtic music. One discovery he makes is that despite much research by himself and his colleagues, there appears to be no reference to the term "Wild Goose" (representing the Holy Spirit)which pre-dates George Macleod, founder of the Iona Community in the 20th Century!

All is not lost in terms of the application of certain distinctive themes to the Church today, as Bradley's follow-up "Colonies of Heaven: Celtic Models for Today's Church" (Darton Longman & Todd, 2000) attests. The sobering appraisal of "Making Myths", however, stands as an initial guard on what can and cannot be said about the British Church in the early centuries of Christianity.

The one problem I would mention is that I would have preferred a more indepth analysis as to the possible reasons for the current revival - or maybe that's just because that's the essay question I'm currently working on!!

So if you have a tendency to go misty eyed and sentimental over the possibility of re-establishing the true church of the ancient British Isles, then you must, absolutely must read this book.

This volume contains The Heritage of Hastur and Sharra's Exile--the same two books put together by Daw, years later, under the title Heritage and Exile. Along with the three Renunciate books, written in the same time frame, these books hooked me on the Darkover series. They explore some fundamental social and political dimensions of Darkover and lay the foundation for the stories of Marguerida--my vote for the best of the entire series.

This handbook is a fantastic resource for developing church musicians. The editor has combined a fine list of musical rep. that is appropriate for smaller church choirs to larger ones. The music for the most part is accessible. One could only be careful not to rely on such resource for all their creativity when developing a truly holy liturgy, or work of the people. As it stands and stated previously, it's a fantastic resourse for church musicians though should only be used as such, not as a vehicle or clutch for your the completed development of a church music ministry.

I bought this novel the other day and planned to just read a few pages each night before bed... but I could not put the book down once I opened it. I don't want to give away any plot points or twists in the book, but I found it to be a very adventurous and colorful story that I would gladly read to any children while babysitting, or simply on my own whenever I have the time. I look forward to a sequel and am proud to write the first review. This may easily be the next, and possibly better, Harry Potter.

Highly recommended for high school science instructors attempting to introduce climate change to the very people who'll experience it: our children. This is the book you've been looking for.
Bradley is a geographer/paleoclimatologist with extensive field experience who should be applauded for his work on analyzing and verifying human induced climate change. His adventures to the ends of the world, in combination with the science that drives his work (as found in this relevant title), would be a great way to captivate young minds who find science boring.
