A fine entry into Bradley's thought

Phillip Ferreira has here made a tremendous contribution to what seems to be a developing renaissance in Bradley studies (and Idealist studies generally).

Concerned to subvert recent misunderstandings of Bradley's thought that would assimilate him to the tradition of British empiricism, Ferreira provides a detailed and highly readable exposition of Bradley's doctrines of truth, judgment, and "feeling" that restores him to his proper place in the tradition of rationalism and Idealism.

This volume is an excellent introduction to Bradley's thought in general, the more so because Bradley's own writings are so difficult to find. (James Allard and Guy Stock have helpfully collected some of his central texts in _F.H. Bradley: Writings on Logic and Metaphysics_, which makes a nice companion to the present volume.)

In it, Ferreira carefully examines and elaborates Bradley's understanding of _judgment_, which Ferreira describes as "_the_ basic act of cognition by which we knowingly encounter reality." The discussion turns to the relation between judgment and truth, the relation between contradition and thought, the specially Bradleian understanding of "coherence," and (very importantly) the relation between feeling and knowledge (which occupies two chapters).

A closing chapter considers criticisms of Bradley levelled by Russell and James; a short conclusion argues briefly both that Bradley does not fit easily into more recent philosophical categories, and that Bradley's philosophy might provide a needed corrective to more recent views that we either have no access to the real or that such access provides no insight into universal _value_.

An appendix delivers what seems to be a deathblow to recent views of Bradley as an Anglo-empiricist by considering his relations to what he regarded as the essentially empiricist view of inference: associationism.

For Bradley, says Ferreira, "the truth is the whole." It would perhaps not be unfair to regard this volume as an attempt to spell out in some detail what this doctrine meant to Bradley and to suggest that its meaning should be important to us today as well.

For those who, like me, have strong misgivings about the "analytic turn" in philosophy, this fine exposition of Bradley's thought will be most welcome. And for those who, also like me, regard Brand Blanshard as the finest of twentieth-century philosophers, this volume will be of interest as regards the Idealist tradition that was the strongest influence on that giant of rationalism.

My husband and I used this book in our Bradley Birthing Class and it was excellent! I definately recommend it to all women wanting a natural, healthy, un-complicated birth. This workbook is usually included with the cost of your Bradley Birthing class, so check with your teacher before ordering. Also, this book is most effective when used in conjunction with a Bradley Birthing Class.

A Texas Rancher's Story

Review Date: 2005-10-27
Calf ropers and bulldoggers in particular and cow people in general are the unwary subjects of Rusty Bradley's "Bridlewise and Otherwise." Depending on his mood, Mr. Bradley alternately pens insults and praise, draws analogies, casts reflections on, has sympathy with and waxes poetic about both the folks who make their living on horseback and who have the weekend mania about horses and assorted bovine-type creatures. In spite of his sincere modests protests to the contrary, Rusty is also a writer. Tossing about the colorful vernacular of the rangeland with the ease of a man who has spent many summers in the saddle, Rusty has a bridle-in-the-hand knowledge of his subject matter -- both the people and the critters. "Bridlewise and Otherwise" is written like a cowboy talks. A modern day Will Rogers, Rusty is a master of the understatement. Like Rusty says, "A real cowboy can go anywhere on a large ranch day or night...I get lost in the horse pasture. --from book's dustjacket

Gut-Busting Comedy

Review Date: 2000-08-02
This installment of Peter Bagge's great comic "Hate!" finds Buddy Bradley living at home in New Jersey following the death of his father. The title refers to the matriarchy Buddy finds himself living under: his dysfuntional single-mom sister, his own grief-stricken mother, and his insane girlfriend Lisa. Nervy comedy based on edgy battle-of-the-sexes obsevations will have you howling with laughter and feeling anxious at the same time. One critic said "Hate!" is like "Stranger Than Paradise" meets the Three Stooges: I would say Cameron Crowe crossed with the Farrelly brothers. Must-read literature for understanding the '90's.

A Great Book for Mr Bradley or Anyone Else to Read

This is one of Pattinson's best books. Ray Holden and Harry Skene are a couple of guys who are just drifting through life. They met onboard a ship but were late and missed its departure so stranded in Puerto Paramo, Mexico they are in need of way to obtain some cash to live. They are offered the job of driving a car across the US border to Texas where they are to hand it to a Mr Bradley who will pay them $1000 dollars for their trouble. The question of why someone would pay them $1000 to deliver and old car to the USA soon is unpleasantly answered.

Other great Pattinson novels are The Silent Voyage, Skeleton Island, The Time of Your Life, Away With Murder, Blind Date, The Murmansk Assignment, Obituary for Howard Grey, Crane, The Animal Gang, Spoilers, The Golden Reef and Life Preserver. Pattinson writes in an old man style where his characters use words that show Pattinson is obviously from a previous generation and not quite down with the lingo of today but this style does add something unique and enjoyable to his novels.

The Cat Care Manual

An Incredibly Informative Reading
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-30
The Cat Care Manual is a hardcover book that encompasses basic kitten, adult, and elderly cat care plus the latest veterinary advice on sickness and how to maintain health. In an easy-to-understand format, (complete with full-color photos and illustrations of cats used to better explain certain points,) the book supplies answers to commonly asked questions, from,"Will cat fleas live on humans?" to "Should I choose a male or a female kitten?"

There are five organized chapters, which help make the book more comprehensive: The Young Cat; The Adult Cat; The Elderly Cat; General Medical Care; First Aid. In the first section, you can acquire the knowledge to purchase a happy and healthy new addition to your family. The second part includes all you need to know and more about breeding and neutering/ spaying your kitty. Following up, "The Elderly Cat" describes the sad decision you must make to benefit your beloved feline. After all,"To put to sleep or not to put to sleep?" really is the question. The fourth chapter is packed with descriptions of all sorts of diseases, while the fifth provides life-saving facts.

As a cat owner and breeder myself, I can tell you that The Cat Care Manual truly is a number one book for a serious (or even not so serious) cat lover. Viner goes to great lengths to make everything clear to the reader. I suggest that the reader be at least twelve years old, since the detailed information can be rather difficult to digest for the younger person. How can you tell if your kitten has congenital problems? What does it mean if your cat gives you a long, slow blink? Is ringworm caused by a worm? If you are a owner of a feline and you don't know the answer to any one of these questions, then The Cat Care Manual is for you!
