How refreshing! Five stars for Red Stars! I found this book to be a truly orginal work of fiction. The plot is complex, fast paced, full of twists, and completely engrossing. Characters such as Lord Kirriith, Professor Cleopotees/Clee Tremont, and Keirta Valner really come alive. Above all, there is action--and lots of it--in this story of survival. I can't wait for his next one!

This book starts and ends with an epic battle for survival. It spans both space - billions of miles and time - five centuies - to end up in Earth's solar system. There is a wonderful mix of fantasy, reincarnation, science, politics, history, human, and alien nature that I haven't seen in any other science fiction book. I found it to be one of those rare books that intertwined details and story line in a way that made science fiction both believable and captavating. There is a full circle traveled in Red Stars that doesn't become clear until the end of the book.

Once I began reading Red Stars, I couldn't force myself to put it down. Clearly its one of the best reads I have ever enjoied.

This is one of my prize possessions and I take it with me to concerts to get the artist to sign their picture in the book. So far I have Lee Scratch Perry, Cutlure (less Joseph, but plus Kenyatta) Gregory Isaacs and Ashton "Family Man" Barrett--from The Wailers. I LOVE THIS BOOK!! Buju, you are next.
(Before signing, Lee actually looked over the book. Even he liked it)

Interviews, comments from reggae legends and those involved in the music, and a running history accompanies a wealth of color photos following the history of reggae music in Jamaica in Lloyd Bradley's Reggae: Story Of Jamaican Music. While designed to accompany a BBC TV series on the topic, this fine coverage with its photos by Dennis Morris stands alone well as an excellent treatment of reggae's evolving styles and personalities.

An excellent and lucid description of the Oxford House. The book contains valuable research findings but is also accessible to the layman. Especially important is Chapter 11, which demonstrates the efficacy of the Oxford House rehabilitation model by citing a wide variety of studies, some of them done by the author.

Rescued Lives by Lenny Jason and others is a new Tally's Corner. The book is written in a readable, story-telling way but it tells the story of Oxford House with researched based evidence that shows why the 1,256 Oxford Houses that have sprung up around the country and how they hold out great promise for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts. By living together they are able to become comfortable enough in sobriety to stay clean and sober without relapse. Between 67% and 87% of the recovering individuals living in Oxford House will "make it" by achieving sobriety comfortable enough to avoid relapse. What a break through and what a story.

This book is quite extraordinary! Unlike other spiritual books of its kind, I feel it answers the question, "What would Jesus's messages of Love really have to say to our world today, unencumbered by judgment, ethnocentricity and centuries of religious bigotry?"
"REVEALING THE FACE OF GOD" is a book which allows healing to occur through its messages of true forgiveness, global unity and absolute equality for all. If you liked "A Return to Love" or "Conversations with God" or "A Course in Miracles", you will love this book! Try it, you will not be disappointed!

Someone recommended this book to me and gave it to me as a gift. I was less than thrilled until I started reading the book. I truly enjoyed it, far beyond what I had imagined. Bradley uses a light touch and every page is lifted with Bradley's unique sense of humor. Highly recommended.

I have been teaching for nearly 20 years and came across School Daze on the Internet. I purchased the book hoping to compare my first year as a teacher to Bradley's. When the book arrived, I read the book in two days. It is an extremely accurate portrayal of the life of a first year teacher. Also, the humor Bradley uses really takes the book to another level. I highly recommend School Daze.

This is an excellent book to share with your sons. As a father of two boys, I found the images and the story captivating. The boys, 4 and 7 years old, frequently ask for the book to be read and love to act it out. This is a book they love and really relate to. I highly recommend this book!

Review Date: 2007-06-05
This is a beautifully written and illustrated story. It confirms the belief that not everything we do can be broken down to pure logic or sense. The search for Sasquatch is the search for fun things to do with your Dad or to simply dream an impossible dream. What is the harm in that? My son got it quickly as we often engage in imaginative play. Who is to say there is no Sasquatch and who is to saw that we can't or should not live in our dreams (at least every now and then). The design of this book is also great as the pages are fully painted and you can't help but be engrossed in the story of this great hairy giant.

Outstanding History
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-03
The West Point Word War II series is one of the best sources of history on the Second World War. The Atlases associated with each volume are a must because the text refers to them frequently. The writing style is not overly technical and explains the foundations of military doctrine followed by the respective combatants in prosecuting the conflict.

The authors are able to point out the fundamental errors made by each side, the results of those miscalculations and what adjustments (if any) were made. The correct deductions are also put on display for the reader. And the authors manage to make the conflict dramatic in a professional way. For example, at the battle of Midway the Americans had put all their critical assets at risk. If all the US carriers were lost the situation in the Pacific would have been ruinous. The authors clearly point out that the Japanese fleet was overwhelming, and properly used could not have lost that battle. The American command was counting on Japanese mistakes, and the Japanese made them.

Thus, the West Point historians have injected the true drama of the situation in June of 1942. A lot was on the line and the history of WWII would have been far different if the US admirals had made the mistakes instead of the Japanese.

The entire series is filled with this kind of drama.

The background sections which cover the road to WWII is thought provoking and shows how the outcome of the war, in many respects, was determined prior to the start of hostilities. The books cover the mental attitudes that contributed to the start of the war and the course of the conflict.

The series isn't perfect. The US Army writers find a little time to subtly criticize some actions of the US Navy and US Marines. They seem to like implying the Marines were getting a lot of publicity for doing the same thing the Army was doing. This is a very minor criticism and such minor diversions do not detract at all from the superlative standards set by this very complete history.

Anyone interested in WWII, its causes, conduct and outcomes, must read this set (one book covers the Pacific war and the other the European war - and there is an atlas for each of these volumes for a total of 4 books).

You get 18 chapters covering topics like:
"Going Places Without Going Crazy"
"Shop Smart, Shop Fast"
"Great Garden Shortcuts"
"Bathrooms and Laundry Room,"
"Hassle-Free Holidays All Year Round"
Each tip is short, so keep this around to dip into when you have a few minutes now and then. Some of the ideas may be familiar (put baking soda/vinegar in drains to keep them clear of clogs, or save unwanted gifts to give to others). Others will surprise you (you can ask funeral homes for left over flower arrangements).

Bringing the Western to the RPG
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-15
I was pretty impressed with this book. I have a large number of gaming modules and this one stands out in my opinion by being well written and well organized. It has possibly the best Index and Table of Contents I have seen in awhile. That might seen an odd observation, but you have looked more then one rule book, you know how rare and yet how useful those are.

Sidewinder: Recoiled builds on to the Open Game License (OGL) D20 system rules a well thought out approach to bringing Western movie genre into the RPG world. There have been other approaches, but this one sticks to a non-magical west. Dog House Rules has provided a lot of material in the book and in supplements to run a more historical western game. But, they excel at giving you the tools and options to give your campaign the Hollywood/spaghetti/pulp feel.

Whether you want the good ol' westerns like Shane, Stage Coach, The War Wagon, or True Grit ~ or if you want the grittier more mythic feel of Sergio Leone ~ or even David Samuel "Sam" Peckinpah ~ the tools are here.

There are lots of historical information and even more on their website, [...] - they also have a range of additional material available through download PDF's including Fort Griffin. A resource for a frontier town with maps, buildings, and Non Player Characters.

A great resource for anyone wanting to run a Western Themed campaign.

While it still relies the d20 moderns corebook for a few things, the game comes into its own onces your base hero (fast, tough, smart, whatever) can qualifiy for the advanced classes given. I would rather they had made the product stand alone, but as the d20 core book is only needed for the first 3 character levels and some basic rules this isn't a bad system. They also provide periodic updates and modules from their website.

If you are considering running a western's campaign and already have the d20 moderns book, I recommmend this game most highly.

Poetry's best kept secret
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-04
After four dazzling books, George Bradley is one of the best kept secrets in contemporary American poetry. A writer whose subjects range from science and philosophy to Renaissance art and everyday life, he writes beautiful, funny, and extremely smart poetry. Try "How I Got in the Business" for a hilarious narrative that parallels the poetry biz with raising and producing olive oil for a mafia family. This poem is the author's second Georgic (his first was "A Georgic for Doug Crane," which told in equally funny detail how to raise, press, and bottle grapes). In both, the laughter gives way to reflection, and ultimately, beauty by the end. It's Bradley's signature gesture--the sudden turn from irreverence to lyric grace. Here, he pulls the trick off again and again: in shorter poems, like "A Poet in the Kitchen" and "My Poem Meets Tamerlane," as well as in the gorgeous sonnet sequence on the turn of the seasons, "A Year in New England."

Just wait until you read George Bradley. He's standing on the shoulders of Webster's Unabridged. He picks great words and then darn if he doesn't know how to put them together. If you've got your heart set on reading poetry that will give you chill-bumps, this book is the one to buy.
