A Calculus book that made me fall for Calculus

I have always wanted to gain a degree of mastery over the subject of Calculus, knowing the power and elegance of this topic of mathematics. I had searched in vain for a text that made the subject matter comprehensible, fearing no such beast existed. I stumbled onto this book virtually by accident and to my great surprise and delight, I found the text easy to read, with the subject material presented in a sequential manner that aided complete understanding. At no stage of the text did I suffer the pangs of not knowing where some pertinent information had arisen. Further, many of the examples in the book had a practical application of Calculus to the real world, making the subject even more rewarding to learn. In short, this Calculus Book has made the Calculus a pleasure to learn. My enduring and hearthelt thanks to MR. HOFFMANN and MR BRADLEY for their wonderful gift to me

This is a very readable and extensively researched look at the trees of Washington D.C. It's an excellent field guide for identifying trees, but the thing I like most about it is that it tells the fascinating stories behind so many of the trees planted in D.C. If you live near D.C. and have even a mild interest in its history, I strongly recommend this book!

I originally bought Melanie Choukas-Bradley's CITY OF TREES in its hardcover coffee-table edition and have followed its evolution since. As a Washingtonian of some thirty years' standing, I was originally unaware that this beautiful city was ever known as the City of Trees, but now that I've read Melanie's book, I've looked at the city through different eyes. Though the cherry blossoms are the best-known trees of the city, there's so much more, from the sights in every neighborhood through the rich diversity of our parks. DC is a beautiful city, and there's not nearly enough in print to show and share that beauty. Get this book.

This cookbook offers up more than 200 wonderful recipes that might just been found in Genoa City's famous eateries. Many of the recipes have been donated by the actual stars of the show, such as Melody Scott Thomas, and creator William J. Bell. With such cute chapters like "Foods for Devastating Breakups" and "Cravings" (food the characters craved while they were pregnant), there are recipes here to satisfy any mood.

Full of great photos from the show, and lively character biographies, COOKING WITH THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS is a treat for show fans and cooking fans alike.

Understanding International Relations
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-30
The author uses evolutionary theory to develop ultimate explanations for common phenomena (warfare, ethnic conflict) that have largely eluded other international relations scholars. The basic argument is that warfare is an adaptation like other social behaviors. For our ancestors, on average, the benefits for participants in terms of the evolutionary currency of genes (or inclusive fitness) exceeded the costs. These benefits were mainly protection of kin and resources. In-group out-group distinctions, xenophobia, and ethnocentrism are also adaptations, and now supply the raw material for ethnic conflict.

The author acknowledges the contributions of international relations scholars using the standard social science model, including realists and rational choice scholars, but argues that their theories and explanations focus mainly on proximate causes and, problematically, are often not consilent with knowledge in the life sciences.

The author does an excellent job of reviewing the research conducted on intergroup aggression in animals, warfare among ants, and intraspecific killing among chimpanzees. There are able reviews of the literature on primitive warfare and the motivation/emotions of warriors. The little discussed by pivotal role of disease in facilitating and inhibiting Western expansion is discussed. Current theories of ethnic conflict--primordialism and modernism--are compared and their strengths and weaknesses identified.

This book should be read widely by anybody who wants a deeper, well-grounded, scientific understanding of the roots of warfare and ethnic conflict

Fine command of the literature

Bradley Thayer's book demonstrates an encyclopedic command of the literature. The volume lays out the relevance for the relevance of evolutionary theory for our understanding of international relations. Given the political furor over creationism, intelligent design, and neo-Darwinian evolutionary theory, this work serves an important purpose. Thayer demonstrates the power of evolutionary theory in explaining many of the political phenomena associated with international politics. Readers interested in the implications of evolutionary theory for international politics would be well-advised to examine this volume.

Despite "Death in the Wet," Not Wet Behind the Ears
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-08
The first Gladys Mitchell I ever read, and, again, one of her best. The plot involves three separate strands, both built around the various notions of death by drowning: the death of a snooping schoolmistress in the bathroom at the performance of The Mikado; the death of a madwoman in an asylum who fell into an ornamental pond; and an acquitted wife killer, George Bryan Cutler, based on George Joseph Smith, murdering two other people, and attempting to murder Mrs. Bradley. The ending is ingenious, with one of the most incredible motives ever to grace a detective fiction novel, though the book shares some similarities with "Speedy Death" and "St. Peter's Finger," in the scene of the crime and the method.

An engrossing whodunit that is suitable for a nice day at the beach or for translation into a PBS movie

Charged with the mission of capturing mystery writers from the Golden Age, the Rue Morgue Press has now reprinted such greats as Dorothy Bowers, Constance & Gwenyth Little, Maureen Sarsfield, Margaret Scherf and many others. Gladys Mitchell is among those greats, having been compared to Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. Mitchell's output was 66 mysteries featuring Mrs. Bradley, a dashing and colorful woman with knowledge of both psychology and the law. DEATH AT THE OPERA was filmed for British television, although details of the book were changed. Diana Rigg portrayed Mrs. Bradley.

Calma Ferris, the unassuming arithmetic teacher in Hillmaston Coeducational Day School, has decided to underwrite the school's latest production, THE MIKADO. She is pressed into service as Katisha, a part for which she is woefully unprepared. Ferris has an uncanny knack of offending people, and thus ends up murdered before the second act of the opera. Enter Mrs. Beatrice Lestrange Bradley, called in by the publicity-minded headmaster to ascertain just who killed the quiet and virtuous Miss Ferris. But first, Mrs. Bradley has to take matters in hand:

"'It seems to me,' Mrs. Bradley remarked, 'that the evidence in support of the theory that Miss Ferris was murdered in the lobby is sufficiently strong to warrant further investigation, but not sufficiently tangible to offer to the authorities. I have reason to believe'-she took out her notebook-'that, as the result of a collision in the corridor, Miss Ferris had her glasses broken and sustained a small deep cut just beneath one eye. She went into the water lobby to bathe the cut, and I have not found out yet that anyone went with her.'"

Mitchell's style of writing is quite formal and extremely articulate, and her command of the plot and facts points to an exacting and logical mind. Mrs. Bradley is a kind woman who has no time for fools, and her character is at once a little repulsive (with claw type of hands and a beak like face) and fascinating. She puts her suspects at their ease until they reveal themselves. DEATH AT THE OPERA is an engrossing whodunit that is suitable for a nice day at the beach or for translation into a PBS movie. Angela Lansbury might be a great Mrs. Bradley!

This is a terrific, endearing children's book for kids AND their parents. The text is meticulously crafted to captivate children and fire their imaginations, and adults will find the storyline sublimely evocative. The didactic story takes you on camping trip filled with delightful sensory experiences perfectly suited for young children. The illustration style is colorful, vivid, atmospheric and completely engaging. Very high quality binding for a children's book, too.

An odyssey for children of all ages!

Deep River Dark is a touching story of adventure, family kinship, and compassion for living things. Not just for children, it's a visceral read that can't help but sweep you back to the memories of summer trips, late night capers, and the mysteries of fireflies. Poetic, perfectly cadenced verse is accompanied by dynamic, lush illustrations that make the experience saturatingly real for both kids and grown-up kids. A simple message is allowed to shine in all its glory, with just the right touch of a bit of magic. I smiled throughout, and I sighed out loud at the end. And what else could you ask for in a book?

One sword. The true sword, EXCALIBUR. Forged from magic and courage, it bears the power of heroes and kings. Its nature is unique, but its forms are legion. It can appear... has appeared... will appear, anywhere, at any time, in a thousand hands in a thousand guises. For Excalibur is the force that protects the souls of Good's guardians, and changes the course of destinies...

Tales of the history and manifestations of Excalibur throughout time, gathered by three of the most experienced anthologists in the field and featuring: Esther M. Friesner, Owl Goingback, Jody Lynn Nye, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Judith Tarr, Susan Shwartz, and many more.

Featuring

"CONTROLLING THE SWORD" by Kristine Kathryn Rusch: The ancestral sword drew generations of children to their destiny but forever cursed all who were unworthy of its touch.

"LASSORIO" by Eric Lustbader: The sullen warlord Lassorio ruled a dark, diminished Camelot until the night a snow fox led him to a place of magic, horror. . . and love.

"THE GOD-SWORD" by Diana L. Paxson: Centuries before the time of Arthur, a Swordbearer and his Druid lover must join the battle for the soul of ancient Britannia.

"SILVER, STONE, AND STEEL" by Judith Tarr: Joseph of Arimathea carried a Mystery to the world's end and discovered his place in an eternal dream of wizards, gods, goddesses, and blood.

"SWORD PRACTICE by Jody Lynn Nye: The young boy-king must discover: Does Arthur rule the sword or does Excalibur rule the king?

"GOLDIE LOX, AND THE THREE EXCALIBEARERS" by Esther M. Friesner: What're you starin' at? Even Merlin's verklempt when the destined Swordbearer for the age turns out to be Brooklyn's Lady of the Lox teen deli waitress Goldie Berman! Who knew?

Not Just For Kids!
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-01
The new Yutopian "Go For Kids" book has just arrived here.

I was surprised to see that it is a general purpose introduction book, that has a broad and complete scope. It is no mere "comic book" short introduction at all.

The book contains comic strips with explanations of ideas, and features conversations between young students and the sensei. While the text covers the basics that all Go players need to get started in a clear and well written way - lots of diagrams, many examples.

In fact, it looks like a no nonsense primer for the beginning or want to

become Go player. It's just about what I'd give as a gift to someone that
expressed interest in learning how to play the game, since it is a good reference book for a new player. In many ways it is simpler than the "In The Beginning" book, since that starts with the idea that you already know how to make life, and all of the various basic concepts - so it is a perfect lead in to it.

As far as being for "kids", I'd say that this book will be suitable for"kids" that already have pretty decent reading, writing and thinking skills -
but that's probably true for the game itself. If you have young children, this book could serve as a teaching guide, so that you don't miss anything. But the thing that is best, is that it is perfect for showing off thegame to teens and adults alike.

To a great extent, all books on Go tend to read the same, ie. "D5 is better here because of black's H4..." but the book goes into some detail on how and why things work a certain way, and goes into good explanations of the mechanisms and sequences of standard plays and situations (ko,seki, eyes, etc.).

I'll be keeping one in my Go bag to bring to club meetings.

So, two thumbs up from this reviewer! :- )

I am an amatuer go player (maybe 10K in strength) and am raising a young family. Of course, when the time is right, I would love to be able to sit across a go board from my little daughter (and the little someone due in December) and enjoy a game. However, there aren't that many resources out there besides my own enthusiasm to help my children not only learn about it but also want to read about it and get excited thinking about it. This book helps facilitate all of these things.

The book's format is great and one of a kind. It is an even amount of written instruction (written in a fun but easy to understand tone) in normal book text but also contains many, many wonderful, playful "comic strips" or panels showing a teacher and his students and they all learn together about go. I think this could really help a kid get excited about go, reading, spending time with a parent...the list goes on.

This book is highly recommended to any parent hoping to share their enthusiasm for go with a child.

Finnally part of their extensive collection of postcards is now avaliable to be shared with everyone. Take your time to enjoy this book. Then, take your time to enjoy it again and again! Thank you to the editors for taking the time to write this book and publish it.
