Reading someone elses mail............Review Date: 2007-06-12
This is a sweet correspondence between two friends that will enlighten all who read it.
Letters from a FriendReview Date: 2004-08-20
H.G.O. Blake and Thoreau carried on an irregular correspondence over thirteen years starting in 1848, and their relationship changed in that time from student/teacher to friends. Editor Bradley Dean does a wonderful job of thoughtfully introducing the correspondence, of providing background information to give context to each letter, and in offering extensive notes to clarify references. The result is a book every bit as enjoyable to read as Walter Harding's annotated Walden. It gives you an intimate look at the brilliant man who many have thought lacked ordinary human feelings. As Edward O. Wilson wrote for the back cover, "In its spontaneity it is the next best thing to personal conversations with the man himself."
A Gem of a Book!Review Date: 2006-09-12
One of my favorite and profoundly thought-provoking letters is the one where he speaks about a muskrat's den he found (during his wanderings) in an analogy for understanding how so much "doing" is necessary for arriving at a little bit of "being" in this world. There is something realistic but consoling at the same time in reading that letter. The book is worth getting just for this letter alone!
Although he wrote in the 19th century, many of his deeper ideas are still valid and very spiritually nourishing, and this book makes me want to read Thoreau's other writings.

Another of New York's Finest.Review Date: 2002-02-09
Lost Voyages is paperback measuring approx. 11½ in x 8½ and filled with over 200 pages of detailed information, historic photographs, underwater photographs, sketches, maps and sectional drawings. Expertly crafted, the book is laid out from the earliest days of America - as a fledgling nation, at Sea right up to the present. With chapters dedicated to; Wooden Warships, Sailing Merchant Ships, the Ascendancy of the Steamship, Ships that ran Aground, the 1914-1918 War, Between the Wars, WW2 and the Era of Modern Navigation, this is a fascinating voyage through the Shipwrecks of time in this one small corner of the world.
The layout, and combination of historic and up-to-date information have been engineered in such a way as to provide the reader with a fascinating insight into the maritime casualties off one major American seaport.
From a Scuba Diver's perspective, these shipwrecks are easily "New York's finest" making this an essential addition to any bookshelf. Once read by any diver - even if you don't live in New York, you just know you will "have" to dive some of these wrecks - someday...

Many fantastic and historic wrecks, such as the famous Grand Dame of the Sea the Andrea Doria and the WWI Battlecruiser San Diego are discussed in detail here.
Author Bradley Sheard's outstanding effort spans two centuries of maritime history as it thouroughly and entertainingly documents the fate of numerous shipwrecks. The book contains a beautifully written textual history supported by outstanding photographs taken by the author along with a good mix of well researched archival material. There are also many carefully and accurately done drawings illustrating the wrecks themselves as they now rest on the sea floor.
The author has obviously gone the extra mile to combine exhaustive research with first hand diving experience to provide the reader with a type of description that brings these shipwrecks to life with many amazing stories of ships and their people that is high drama as only as disaster at sea can be. Bradley Sheard was a member of the legendary Atlantic Wreck Divers and is also one of wreck diving's most skillful and articulate practioners.
I close by saying that I have dived some these shipwrecks and the book enriches my own memories wonderfully and I am compelled to say to Mr. Sheard, in the terms of an East Coast Waterman, well done and "Finest Kind!"

My favorite needlepoint bookReview Date: 2000-06-07
Elizabeth Bradley patterns are great to take with you on holidays, because you don't need a frame (as long as you use cross-stitch). The colors are beautiful, soft "Antique" English colors. Many of the patterns have a striking black background, and she gives guidance regarding color substitutions (both the sage green and pale blue work well). I've done a number of the patterns, and whenever I'm making a gift I do something from this book.
As the title suggests, the patterns are floral but there is a great deal of variety from striking lilies to Victorian wreaths.

This Guide is not for DummiesReview Date: 2006-04-10
The "Pocket Idiot's Guide" gives a brief history of Buddhism, reviews the major schools of Buddhism (Theravada, Mahayana, Tibetan, and Pure Land), and tries to place Buddhism in context in the modern world. It does a good job of each.
One thing the book doesn't do, is explain what the heck Nirvana is. (The Oxford University Press book didn't either). Apparently nobody knows exactly what Nirvana is, but Buddhists are sure that we'll like it.
The uncertainty about Nirvana would tend to make me reluctant to build up too much good Karma. If you don't have enough good Karma, you keep getting reborn, and at least you know what you're in for. If you get too much good Karma, you attain Nirvana, something almost totally unknown. If you don't know where you're going, you might not like it when you get there.

Best source on the subject...but where is Vol 2?Review Date: 2006-08-06
So, if your motorcycle interest is serious, buy the book...it is well worth the price and the wait. And be sure to make a formal request to Amazon for Vol 2. Who knows...maybe customer service will do something about it?

any motorcyclist will be unable to put this book downReview Date: 2006-03-17
this book will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about how bikes work. that is, the why's of frame design, how gears work, types of suspension & what they do... and all as clear as day. this is the best book every made - bar none - about motorcycles. the title sounds dry & perhaps niche-like, but if you care at all about how motorbikes do what they do, you will be totally absorbed by this book.
we are all still waiting for volume 2... please John Bradley!!!
---edit... you can get vol 2 from amazon.co.uk, and i just ordered it. Its a damn shame i didn't know it was available for the past 3 years.. i guess i was stupid to think amazon US would sell it just cos they sell vol 1 (???)

Great Sci-Fi ComicReview Date: 2004-04-06
Red Star takes computerized comics to a whole new levelReview Date: 2004-12-28
Christian Gossett and B.J. Kayl have concocted a perfect combination of fantasy and sci-fi in a story of epic war that is truly engrossing. The narrative style is smoothly sophisticated and will certainly please the die-hard Alan Moore fans. Gossett and Kayl's novel-like prose demonstrates a keen understanding and respect for the readers' intelligence. His meticulous sequence of the URRS' invasion made me feel as if I was on the scene of the action.
Computerized comic book art (i.e. J.U.D.G.E. and GearStation) has always left me somewhat indifferent, but the unique and quality production of The Red Star simply left me in awe from start to finish. The art team (with Gossett penciling) have done such a great job of blending the CG and non-CG art that it is often hard to discern what has been computerized and what has been penciled. The end result is an impressive mixture of early Frank Miller penciling style, fantastic panel layouts, and beautiful coloring.
With its distinctive art production and its equally absorbing premise, I strongly urge you to give The Red Star a try. I'm convinced that you will come to agree with me that there is presently nothing like it on the market.
Thought-provoking, visually stunning Graphic NovelReview Date: 2004-05-10
U.R.R.S is uncannily similar to cold war U.S.S.R. If you like politically intrigued stories, this book will be a special treat. Even you don't know nuts about history or about Russia, you still are in for a thought-provking story with visually stunning artwork.
Only one gripe though. Since it is a thick book, some spreads of artwork are lost in the binding. Otherwise, it would be much more astounding 3D artwork which is not unlike watching the dvd intro before playing PS-2 games.
Give this book a try. It has all issues 1-9 of volume 1 including Battle at Khar-Dhtha Gate, Worker's Tale, Award-winning Run Makita Run, Battle of Norkorka. Now I'm anxiously waiting for vol 2 collected edition to come out.

Thought I should clear that up.
Also, I gave it five stars because I love it, but also because I had to assign stars in order to post this note. So, yes, I am the publisher and yes, I've given it five stars, but I didn't do it just to bump the average up or anything. Just wanted to make that clear.
