I have never met the author, but he comes across as a real person with honest feelings and struggles. This allows the reader to identify with him and rejoice with him in the power of God manifested through the Holy Spirit even when walking trough the desert...

A brillient guide through spiritual struggles.

This book had influinced my life considerably, an impowering and comforting guide through the wilderness and any spiritual struggles. Long takes his owm personal experiene when God chalenged him and disciplinned him, and gives us guide lines on how to bare these dificult times in the spiritual life. Truly brillient and impowering book, five stars are not enough for this masterpiece that has helped so many.

A wonderful confort for those in spiritual wilderness.

Brad Long has prepared a feast in the wilderness. PCUSA minister, former educational missionary to Taiwan, and currently executive director of Presbyterian And Reformed Renewal Ministries International, Long has co-authored two books with Doug McMurry on the power and joy of the Holy Spirit. In Passage through the Wilderness, he presents another side of the Christian experience, and in doing so, provides a feast to sustain all those experiencing "the dark night of the soul" and a guide to all those who stand by, helplessly watching a parishioner, a patient, or a loved one struggle through the wilderness alone. In the author's own words, "It is an extreme book, written for times of extremity in our spiritual journeys." Through a combination of Scriptural examples and intensely personal accounts of his own battles with Satan, self, and God, Long richly illustrates the pain of living through feelings of dryness, abandonment, and/or overwhelming pressure in one's spiritual life, and the importance of clinging to the Lord though he is seemingly absent or overbearingly harsh. "Whom the Lord loves, He disciplines," and Long testifies clearly to the purpose in the pain - the outcome is often an increase in the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit, bringing growth in the life of the believer and the advancement of the Lord's Kingdom. For many, the reading may be labored by the sheer intensity of the subject matter. But for those who are experiencing or reflecting in bewilderment on such pain, it is a banquet of expression and meaning, and comfort. To the hopeless, it offers a lifeline of promise that the Potter is shaping his vessels for His use. To those who have suffered unspeakable grief, it offers a voice and an affirmation for the heart-cries of the soul. To those who have fallen on their knees and their faces in fear and trembling before the judgement of a Holy God, it offers common ground on which to stand firmly in and for Him. To those who have continued to "cry 'Peace, peace,' when there is no peace," it stands as a stark reminder that "common ground" is no substitute for Holy ground. I absolutely loved this book. It is a wonderful family story as well as a great depiction of life in the US over a number of generations. I have recommended this book to both men and women, ages 12 to 80 plus and they have all enjoyed it, thanked me, and recommended it to others. Do read and enjoy this book.

Well written family story is rich in east coast US history.

A good read. This story of a New England family over three generations does a nice job of personalizing concurrent American historic events. Especially good for those of us who have a hard time swallowing history in its pure academic form.

A lively close look at the famous families of Boston.

A key to the mysterious "great names" of New England, this lively and well written account of the Winthrop family is a real winner. For anyone who has spent "Time in New England" as a vistor, student, or resident, this fast moving yet through work is enlightening reading. In addition, it is a great story of a wonderful person, cleverly written by a loving hand. The numerous illustrations are masterfully done. It is a revealing view of American history, credibly told from the inside.I had a hard time putting this book down until the last page.

Anne Knoll's The Secret Life Of Thomas Bradford is an imaginative and entertaining novel for young adults about an odd-eyed white cat who considers himself to be a king, and a self-centered young man with a similar illusion. Neither cat nor man will let anyone or anything stop him on his quest for glory! Humorous and sometimes poignant, The Secret Life Of Thomas Bradford will especially resonate for anyone who shares their household with a furry feline king or queen. Entertaining and especially recommended for young cat lovers and feline fanciers!

I try to read my children's books as often as I can although doing so is not always what you would call a literary adventure. This was not the case in "The Secret Life of Thomas Bradford." Not only was this one of the best children's books I've read, it was one of the best BOOKS I've read in a long time (including some of the so-called bestsellers). "TB" was imaginative and adventurous, so much so I felt compelled to write a review. I plan to buy extra copies to give as gifts and to donate to the school library. I see Ms. Knoll writes gothic romances (just like Marcy). I hope she writes another children's book, she has a true gift. Also, wouldn't this make a lovely full-length cartoon? Quick! Somebody call Disney and Nickelodeon!

Unfortunately this book is as rare as a diamond found in the street. If you are looking for innocence and purity, this voice from the 17th century in England might talk to you as it did to me. Traherne fits into a world described by Van Morrison, T.S.Eliot or William Blake. He seems to have antennas that are connected to Paradise, but not in a dry, scholarly way. His images are refreshing, personal, childlike. He is filled with a genuine, true love that communicates itself to the reader. Consider yourself a lucky person if you get in touch with this fountain of joy.

traherne is writing based upon the reality of his spiritual experience, it is not something written merely for amusement or speculation. If a Christian has been given, by God, through divine union, the gift of peace passing all understanding, it acts as if an interruption in time.Time, in a spiritual sense, loses its flow and if we experience this state, there is a complete loss of every anxiety.....so we are not longing for the past or the future, but the NOW...THE PRESENT REALITY. This is where Traherne has encouraged me, because this has been my reality too though no amount of self effort could produce such a condition. It is too bad that Traherne is so unknown, but then, some one would have to experience what he is saying in his writings in order to understand them because this is not merely intellectual, like reading words off a page.Otherwise, it seems like so much pseudo science and abstract reasoning, but its not.Its a higher form of reality, realized only by those who pursue holiness and wait on the grace of God.And its possible though you will convince no one.Its all between you and God.Love Traherne.

Passionately and deeply spiritual poetry.

Traherne's work is deeply spiritual. His vision is clear and consistant. The impression of reading his work is of getting not only into the author's thoughts, but simultaneously his spirit. Written in post-Shakespearian England by a Presbyterian pastor. A must read.

This is the best book that I have ever read on survival. It tells eveything from how to build lean to's to log cabins to igloos. Also it tells how to build traps to catch animals and fish which is a must if lost in the woods. As well it tells every way imaginable to navigate and tell what your long and lat. are. It tells plants that youcan and cannot eat, how to clean your water, how to make bread, bows and arrows, bolas, survival strategies for the weather, and much much more. I would reconmen this book to any one who loves camping hunting hiking or any one who is interested in these sort of things

Excellent resource!

Mr. Angier presents fascinating and practical information on the very basics of survival-shelter, water, food and warmth. Conventional travellers would do well to carry the few items that he recommends-just in case. Hunters hikers and campers have a bible in this book. I have tested his methods of starting a fire, and finding potable water-He's right on target. Adventure writers will find this book an excellent resource-too bad it's out of print! I was hoping to find an updated version. Mine was published in 1974!

This book provides you with a lot of useful facts and helpful tips on how to prepare for potential crises. I found the information on the bird flu and terrorism especially beneficial. There is no way of knowing if or when any of these events will occur, but by following the suggestions given in the book, you can at least be as prepared as possible should one of these situations arise. As they say, it's better to be safe than sorry!

There are many books on the individual topics listed in the title of this book, however, few authors have the courage to discuss the interconnectedness of these issues like Dr. Frank. These issues will not unfold one at a time, but are more likely to overlap with potentially devestating consequences for you and your family. The author discusses not only the issues at hand, but what we can do about it to protect ourselves. A must read for anyone in tune with global issues!

I found this book to be more comprehensive than "The Long Emergency"

Practical Insights for Health Care Providers and Patients
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-04
Unique in its perspective and insight, The Total Service Medical Practice offers an easy-to-read seventeen step method of critically analyzing service delivery in the ambulatory health care setting. Drawing on in-depth interviews with customers, physicians, practice managers, and communication experts, Vicky Bradford shares specific examples of what distinguishes the best practices and the best employees. Although the easy-to-read, comprehensive text easily can serve as a primer for effective communication in health care, the specific service examples, anecdotes, quotations, charts, and lists provide insight and ideas to even the most experienced practice administrator.

The organization of the text makes it useful as a reference tool for problem solving as well as an instructional tool for in-services. In a time when everyone declares himself to be a service expert, it is refreshing to read the perceptions and insights of patients, family members, physicians, and staff members presented side-by-side.

Resources in the text include insights into organizing a mentoring program for new employee orientation, guidelines on professional perceptions, informal and formal systems analysis, and managing the critical "moments of truth" with customers. Specific examples also are included of Focus Group Interview Questions, a Service-Quality Questionnaire, problem solving techniques, team composition, conflict management, collection / billing timetables, financial agreements, and developing personal service statements.

For the new health care employee or administrator, the text provides rich explanations of ambulatory health care settings, expectations, and terminology. For the seasoned professional, it provides gentle reminders and fresh ideas. This text not only is practical, it is practically indispensable.

I have been fortunate to travel a lot in my life both on and off the beaten path. I used the previous version of The Traveler's Medical Guide for years and it saved me and a friend at least once. The new version has even more information and updated resource lists. It is an excellent resource for initial self diagnosis of ailments. I have used when I am not traveling. It has saved me time, money and as well as provided a peace of mind. It has excellent, easy to understand descriptions of many different ailments and answer to most questions like "should I see a doctor?" "what meds should I take?" "what meds are available?" It even has some options for remote areas where there is no doctor.

This book has been amazingly helpful to my family both on our travels and at home. It's a must for any packing list, whether you're on business, in the family car, or on the way to Timbuktu. The quick reference charts and detailed index make it easy, for example, to look up the possible causes of a cough or decide if an eye problem requires immediate medical attention; it even covers dental issues.

The book is divided into three sections:

I. Pre-trip medical planning
II. Diagnosis and Treatment of Medical Disorders
III. Medications and How to Use Them

The book also addresses travel with children & the special needs of women travelers, including issues related to pregnancy and menopause.

Must read for frequent and business travelers!

Dr. Fujimoto leads of team of eminently qualified authors on the topic of travel related heath problems - how to recognize them, what appropriate treatments are, and most importantly, how to avoid many problems. This book is comprehensive in its approach with checklists on what to do before you leave, and how to keep yourself healthy while travelling. It reviews medical problems by organ systems, and has a handy appendix that deals with sympoms, like rashes, cough, eye problems and such.

This excellent book should be given as a matter of course for any cororate business traveller, or any traveller, for that matter. It is well organized, thorough, and very readable. It gives sound, concrete advice that could save you from lots of misery! Highly recommended!

Review of VOICES OF THE HEART:The Poetry Of J.W.Bradford
By Customer and reader Peggy Jones

I have never in my life written a review for any thing, for it is enough to enjoy what is on the pages I read and know it has satisfied my thirst for what was missing at that given point in time.

So how do I speak about what "Voices of the Heart" means to me? How do I explain what the poetry does to my heart, my soul, my very being when I read it? How do you express to others how these verses, thoughts and words reach deep to the core of your being, when you know the feeling might not be the same to another?

I only know what I feel and "Voices" is one of the most beautiful works of poetry I have read in a very long time. I know it carries every emotion that can be expressed because I have cried, sighed and marveled at feelings I know I've never known in my life time. Yet, I know each verse, each word, each thought has been felt and lived by the man that wrote the book.

"Voices of the Heart" is a book of poetry that should be savored slowly, along with a glass of good wine and soft music and, if you are any thing like me, you will find yourself picking it up again and again to read a certain poem or simply to know that love, with ALL its various emotions, does still exist in the world.

I am a young lady and when I was younger I didn't really like poetry and never got into it. But recently I bought J.W Bradfords "Voices of the Heart" and I really enjoyed the book.as I was reading it I could literally visulaize what he was saying in his poems. His poems give you the inside view of his life and the things that he has gone through. His daughters poems really touched my heart because I could relate with her about her mother but a little different, I didnt have a Dad growing up.when I read her poems I let a little tear down my face and realizing that nobody is perfect and alot of people are the same. In summary I really loved this book and I am going to recomend it to all my family to take a look at it. thank you for taking your time to read this.

This is another in the American Girls series about Addy Walker, a ten-year-old African-American girl living in the America of 1865. With the war over, Trinity A.M.E. Church decides to hold a fair to raise money for those hurt or displaced. Addy's idea for the children to hold a puppet show and sell the puppets is warmly received, but everything looks gloomy when she and Sarah are partnered with Harriet. Everything depends on the girls working together, much more so then they realized, so the girls must come together to overcome.

The final chapter is an informative look at outdoor activities in 1865. This is another, wonderful book, well written, with a captivating storyline and great lessons. My daughter is an Addy fan, and so am I! This book is great!
