Why the author is not doing a revision of the book

I am hardly qualified to review the book since I am its author (sorry about the self-congratulatory stars, but they are required by the form!). I want to mention that the publishers have asked me repeatedly to revise it for another edition. And each time I consider doing so and look over the book, I find that there is nothing I would change. I still believe it represents the distillation of the tacit beliefs that are driving the cognitive science research, even when the practitioners are not fully aware of it and sometimes even when they assert the opposite. The book has been used in classes in psychology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence and pilosophy of mind. While there are things that could be added to the text were a new version to be written, there is nothing I would withdraw or change in what is in the text as it stands.

I really enjoyed this book. It applies the techniques of computational complexity to several of the prevailing models Natural Language Processing in an attempt to assess their practicality. Well done, and a neat application for a typically theoretical subject.

The title says it all. Conjunctions is a great magazine and this is a solid issue. The theme, "secret lives of children," is great and we get great work from the likes of Robert Creeley (RIP), Shelley Jackson and Stephane Mallarme.

Fascinating race/class study, small Southern city in 1930's.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1997-12-05
A Yankee friend of mine once asked about the South, "But why do they torment one another so?" There are a lot of books, including novels by Faulkner and others, which try to answer just that question. One such is Deep South, written in the 1930's by 4 sociologists from Harvard (2 black, 2 white), who lived and studied Natchez, MS for 2 years. While the book contains some dry demographical statistics, it also uses anecdotes to paint an accurate and fascinating picture of the Old South and of how race and class determine social relations among poor whites, blacks, and the "planter elite". (Surely this is the kind of book people like John Grisham use for background for their own writings.) Natchez was the "cotton capital" in the 19th century and was then one of the most important cities in the South. Vital reading for anyone interested in civil rights, race relations, and issues of caste and class. Compare John Dollard's Caste and Class in a Southern Town and Hortense Powdermaker's After Freedom; also, if you're a Grisham fan and want to know what things were really like, read this book. [reviewer is a scholar of Southern culture and native of Natchez]

Designing Automonous Agents: a Review

This book contains a well-chosen sample of what I would like to call some of the "classic" papers in the AI/Robotics research field over the last decade. Maes includes some of the most well-known studies of subsumption architecture, planning, knowledge and goal representation, and behavioral studies. This is a great book for a student of AI/Robotics or just anyone who wants a good basis of understanding in these fields. If you have a robot of your own, this book is an excellent source of detailed descriptions of different architectures developed for organizing robots. While the papers in this book are not on the cutting edge, they provide a good foundation for exploring those that are.

Disraeli

Review Date: 2000-10-19
The author provides a thorough insight of the rise of a commoner of jewish descent to the highest political rank, Prime Minister and leader of the aristocratic Tory party.

Despite its initial slow start the book gathers pace as Disraeli developes into the skilled debater and master parlimentary tatician. The various interchanges between Gladstone, Peel, Bright, O'Connell and Derby make for interesting reading.

The author explores the relationships that Disraeli formed during his life and provides the reader with a glimpse of the era and the mind of the man through many extracts of private correspondance between the subject and his peers, friends and loves.

A thorough commentry of an interesting life.

Elements of Figurative Language is a good resource for teachers who will be working with students struggling to understand how English uses figurative language. He includes the landmark theorists including Kenneth Burke. The book can be used in high school honors or developmental writing courses at the community college level. The selection of reading and exercises are useful
