Gregory Murphy begins this extraordinary book by saying, "Concepts are the glue that holds our mental world together". This is actually an understatement. Without concepts there would be no mental world in the first place. Concepts are mental representations that tie together specific instances, and are essential for relating ongoing experience to knowledge from the past. Concepts allow us to move from William James' "blooming buzzing confusion" to structured and adaptive thought.

Murphy is one of the leading scholars in this area, and he reviews a messy and complicated literature with honesty, clarity, and wit. This is going to be the classic text in the field for a very long time. It is one of the rare cases where the standard back-of-the-book blurb is actually true: Anyone seriously interested in concepts and categorization - seasoned researchers, graduates and advanced undergraduates, or scholars who simply want to get a sense of the field - really must read this book.

This book is an excellent source for intermediate and advanced students of Spanish, linguists and general language specialists. It provides a sound syntactical explanation of different grammatical aspects of Spanish taking into account phonological explanations, semantics, pragmatics and translation issues.

How wonderful to see so many images of this academic community before its demise. While Jean Pond wrote a detailed history of the early beginnings of Bradford, Professor O'Malley has updated that intimate examination of the College through visual imagery and a number of background comments. Maybe someday someone will write the history with all its juicy gossip...it would probably have to be in fiction form to avoid slander suits!

A lot has gone into the making of David Raw 's Bradford Pals: A Comprehensive History Of The 16th-18th & 20th Service Batillions Of The Prince Of Wales Own West Yorkshire Regiment 1914-1918: though a specialty item for military libraries, it uses memoirs, letters, diaries, newspaper reports, and official archives to recount the experiences of the Bradford Pals in the face of war. The early days of World War I led two volunteer Pals Battalions to recruit, train and serve in Egypt and in France between 1916 and 1918: their experiences and shared memories document over two years of war during which over a third of the original Pals were killed or wounded. Black and white photos pepper the account and cement the 'you are there' feel of Bradford Pals, which is recommended for any in-depth survey of the World War I battlefield experience.

"Extraordinary Life" : Such an understatement!!

Bradford Washburn led a super extra-extraordinary life as one of America's greatest mountain photographers, cartographers, scientists and mountaineers. Its not every kid who climbed three highest peaks in the Alps in a two weeks period like he did while in his teens.

The book is an autobiography written by Washburn with help from Lew Freedman. Its a well written account, highly interesting, highly informative and many gripping accounts of many of his "extraordinary" adventures. He wastes no word in this book, every passage, every sentence say something about his life. Although 314 pages appears to be too short to write a life about one of the "extraordinary" Americans of our lifetime, I thought the book accomplished its purpose. If you want more detail on Washburn, you can read many of his books he wrote over the years including ones that he wrote while as a teenager.

The book reflect his accomplishments, his deeds and his desire to explore. Ironically, one of his greatest accomplishments appears to be marrying his wife, Barbara, who proves to be extraordinary person herself, a soul mate who shared in her husband's passion that very few men are lucky to have. The book reflects his pride in having such a wife and sharing his life with her.

If there was a downside to this book, it doesn't reflect a lot regarding his children and his other aspects of his personal life. The book seem to be centered around his life of adventure. I would like to have known if he was ever an avid Red Sox fan since he was born and rise in the New England area where he also lived through out his life. Or if he had other quirky interests beside what he is well known for. The book also don't reflect much on some of the disagreements he have known to have with other folks in his fields. It could be that the book wasn't gear toward such matter and it might be left to future biographers to figure all that out.

The book comes well illustrated with photographs of Washburn's many adventures. They are all in black and white and many reflects the passages in the book very well. However, on page 231, he wrote about posing for photographs with other veterans of earlier McKinley climbs. I would have like to have seen one of these "one in the lifetime" photos.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in mountaineering, photography or just like reading about adventuresome people. Bradford Washburn definitely led a very interesting and adventuresome life and this book is well worth the effort to read.

A classic American text

The Pilgrims are vastly overrated as colonial forefathers: most of them died within weeks of stepping onto shore, and those that survived largely remained inconsequential, except for two facts. They married into the larger and far more successful Puritan group who arrived 10 years after they did, and they got a better myth built around one of our national holidays. William Bradford's history is a charming, paranoid vision of coming to America and trying to make it here. The Pilgrims' history is largely one of peaceful co-existence with the Indians, except for the year after the first Thanksgiving, when the only Indian in sight was the one whose head decorated the pike outside Plymouth. A great book to debunk a largely false national myth, the true story is far more compellingly bittersweet, especially as Bradford tries to come to grips with the failure of his colony. The turkey incident alone is worth the price of the book (trust me -- it's hysterically grotesque).

... And you are! This is a fantastic, accurate account of the happenings around Plymouth, from the words of William Bradford himself. I got this book for my husband as a Christmas present and he loved it! (I got an old, 1800's edition, in the original 1600s language.)

Derek Lister wrote from the heart 25 years after the greatest change in the British music scene took place.
My brother-in-law Irvin "Smudge" Smith played with the Dingo's one of Bradford's and the North of England's most popular groups.
I "Vanned" them around in 1962 the crowds were amazing. The whole rock and roll documentation and Derek's personal meetings, and knowledge of major US rock stars like Gene Vincent is amazing.
Well written and all who were in the Bradford rock/jazz era from the 1950's through the '60's should read this book.It brought back many happy memories for me know living in the USA. Dave Jones (Ex Braford Teddy Boy and "mod" 1952-1962...)
