Mario DeMarco presents "WILLIAM BOYD: HOPALONG CASSIDY, KNIGHT OF THE WEST" (Paperback) (1982) --- William Boyd was an American actor --- Born William Lawrence Boyd in Cambridge, Ohio, he was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma --- He became famous as a Hollywood leading man in silent film romances with a yearly salary of $100,000, but by the end of the 1920s his career had begun to deteriorate, Boyd was without a contract and going broke. Boyd's picture was mistakenly run in a newspaper story about the arrest of another actor with a similar name, William Stage Boyd, on gambling and liquor charges, which further hurt his career --- In 1935 he was offered the lead role in the movie Hopalong Cassidy --- He changed the original pulp-fiction character, written by Clarence E. Mulford, from a whisky guzzling wrangler to a cowboy hero who didn't smoke, drink, or swear and he always let the bad guy start the fight --- Boyd would be indelibly associated with the Hopalong Cassidy character, and he gained lasting fame in the Western film genre because of it.

Boyd purchased the rights to the character of Hopalong, as well as the rights to the 66 Hopalong Cassidy movies --- In the early 1950s, he released the movies to television, where they became extremely popular --- Along with other cowboy figures, such as Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, Boyd licensed merchandise, including such products as Hopalong Cassidy watches, cups and dishes, comic books and cowboy outfits --- Boyd used his fame and his fortune to meet with children around the world, and underscore for them the fine qualities of the Hopalong Cassidy figure he portrayed --- As a private individual and an actor, he was a hero to a generation of American children --- The Hopalong Cassidy films remain available for broadcast, and are on DVD in restored form.

COWBOY STAR WILLIAM BOYD DEAD AT 77 - 100

Boyd appeared as Hopalong Cassidy on the cover of numerous national magazines, such as the August 29, 1950 issue of Look Magazine and the November 27, 1950 issue of Time Magazine --- Oddly, both Clark Gable and Robert Mitchum experienced their first big breaks in movies playing bearded villains in westerns starring Boyd.

William Boyd died in 1972 in Laguna Beach, California and was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California --- He is survived by his wife, actress Grace Bradley Boyd --- (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Check out a new book from Empire Publishing - "GENE AUTRY WESTERNS" (Hardcover) - by author Boyd Magers, like no other book on Gene Autry --- all of Gene's Mascot, Republic and Columbia westerns included, as well as his half-hour TV Episodes --- each segment contains the release date on each film -- major production credits -- complete cast (including character played) -- all songs included, songwriter and who performed them in the film -- running time of each film ... dates of the filming -- bios on the cast and major players (Smiley, Pat Buttram, Cass County Boys, Herbert J. Yates, directors, leading ladies, songwriters and various heavies, etc.) -- locations that were used -- budgets and negative cost -- stunt people involved -- analysis and synopsis on each film -- notes and comments (including film and cast background info, salaries paid, working titles, etc) -- comments from Gene and many other cast members on each film -- theater exhibitors comments at the time of the films release -- this tribute was written from the heart and it shows.

The Wind is Not a River

Immediately bringing us to a remote, Aleutian island during World War II, The Wind is Not a River is a powerful tale, richly textured by the environment and culture in which it is set. The story is not a simple "adventure" story, as some summaries have purported; the plot is strikingly complex.

The characters, so true to life, are struggling with the echoing words of their grandmother, as they try to escape the Japanese invasion of their village. Their physical challenges are compounded by a profound questioning of ethics. What should they do when they find an unconscious, Japanese soldier? Is their freedom more valuable than their humanity?

For teachers, this story is a fine centerpiece to an interdisciplinary unit on the tundra, providing an accurate look at our generous, sensitive, and courageous neighbors to the north. A must for any teacher serious about providing his/her students with a critical and inspiring education.

4 1/2 Sumptuous Illustrations Highlight "Wings of LIght"

Bruce Hiscock's luminous, almost staggeringly beautiful watercolor illustrations highlight this story about the migration of a yellow butterfly from the Yucatan forests to a Vermont farm. Hiscock's mastery of light, form, and composition help us discover new ways of looking at the butterfly's long jouney. He reveal the jungle's abstract color designs, the Gulf of Mexico's blue waters--dappled with scores of yellow-winged shapeds, and the brilliance of the flowers that provide food and nesting grounds. Hiscock treats us to bright delphimiums and bromeliads, wild ponies running over Assateague Island, Maryland, and a startling trail of pure yellow that's actually a stream of butterflies beginning their flight over the Gulf.

The prose is rhythmic, but Swinburne's grand style sometimes tries too hard; that is, it begins to sound overwritten: "The next morning, the forest, from mossy floor to canopy, moves in flashes of yellow wings." "The bromeliad with a notch in it's wing perches on a bromeliad living on the branch of a fig tree." Some sentences are too long, or too illiterative: "Many of them fly to feed on the forest flowers." Some readers will enjoy these lush poetic sounds; however, I found them distracting, and the language may be somewhat too complex for toddlers. There's also one annoying mismatch of text and illustration. We read that "a yellow butterfly with a notch in its wing, sliced by a bird's beak," flutters by, but the butterfly (the one we follow throughout the book from its initial flight to its tired Disney-like "cycle of life" ending) is a small speck in the background, it's confusing bird-sliced notch barely visible.

Generally, however, the book presents an oooh- and ahhhh-inspiring narrative of the long migration path. There's a migration map part way through (although it shows only the USA leg of the migration; Central America is out of the picture),and an afterward which ponders--without directly answering--how such a small insect can make a trip of thousands of miles. By far, the best part of the book, unusually good, in fact, are the gripping watercolors of Mr. Hiscock. I think the book is most appropriate for older grade-schoolers who can understand the text, and who have some library skills to do further research. 29 pages (including frontispiece and afterward), on high quality paper, from Boyds Mills Publishing.

A Great Family Saga

Anne Baker writes great family sagas. I have enjoyed each one that I have read, they are set around the same area of the Mersy in England but at different times. So far each book has had a different story.

This one is about Alice Luckett and her family. When the book starts Alice is 9 years old and the year is 1928 and her father has just died, at the end of the book Alice is 19 and it is 1938. Alice goes to live with her grandparents Edith and Monty and her Uncle Peter. She becomes very close to the people next door Nell and Eric Ainslie. There is also Uncle Frank, Aunt Cecily and her cousin Madison. Frank and Monty both have secrets.

I really enjoyed this book.

Bentley Boyd's cartoon pages start with clear objectives that he developed when aligning graphical stories with Virginia's content-focused "Standards of Learning." This book and others in the series make learning history not only visually stimulating but straightforward. As an educator, I enthusiastically recommend these books to young students (upper elementary grades and middle school, especially) who enjoy history, are visual learners, or both.

The artist's innovative and entertaining use of layout and color developed over his years as a political and educational cartoonist (full disclosure: I have known Bentley for many years, and saw early versions of many of the narratives that ended up in the Chester the Crab series). Unlike some graphic novels or other comics, which can be confusingly dense, this book succeeds in having both variety and clarity.

Schools and parents who want their kids to learn plenty of real content should consider using this author/artist's work. This book has five richly illustrated and fact-filled pages on each of four heroic women. The result is education on history, geography, politics, and even culture -- the author is a fine historian who knows how important both context and accuracy are to any learner. Parents will love these books too (and are more likely to catch some of the multi-level humor subtly embedded in the stories and pictures).

One note: even though this is a series for students, Bentley is unafraid to address sensitive issues and unwilling to gloss over the unpleasant aspects of history, as many texts for children once did. This is history and art from someone who loves and respects both.

Not everyone knows that writers are real people. Writers eat, sleep, write and cook much like everyone else. But even with a mouthful of one of their favorite recipes, writers also have the gift of gab. With roughly two hundred recipes, readers will be able to fill up on pages of good food and great stories in WRITERS IN THE KITCHEN.

You'll be able to look for your favorite author or find a new one as you read children's book authors shared recipes and memories in this flavorful and unique cookbook. This book best served at room temperature.

Wonderful original color pictures of ETO WWII aircraft

Jeffrey Ethell put together a wonderful collection of original WWII vintage color pictures of military aircraft, primarily from the European Theater of Operations. The book is light on text, but the pictures more than make up for this shortcoming. Mr. Ethell, who unfortunately died in a crash of a P-38 in 1997, was a foremost authority of military aircraft and amassed an amazing collection of color photographs from WWII. Just a small fraction of these are displayed in this wonderful book. If you are a fan of WWII military aircraft, this book is a must for your collection.

Like Wye Island itself, this book is a real treasure. The story is fascinating and important--involving developers (both progressive and traditional), the varied layers of community residents, and the rich ecology of the Maryland Eastern Shore. But perhaps most striking is the way in which Boyd Gibbons tells this story. His prose is unusually strong and effective. He has a great gift for the apt description, the telling image, as well as for narrative flow. This is a book to read and to keep.
