The Wind is Not a RiverReview Date: 2001-02-17
The characters, so true to life, are struggling with the echoing words of their grandmother, as they try to escape the Japanese invasion of their village. Their physical challenges are compounded by a profound questioning of ethics. What should they do when they find an unconscious, Japanese soldier? Is their freedom more valuable than their humanity?
For teachers, this story is a fine centerpiece to an interdisciplinary unit on the tundra, providing an accurate look at our generous, sensitive, and courageous neighbors to the north. A must for any teacher serious about providing his/her students with a critical and inspiring education.

4 1/2 Sumptuous Illustrations Highlight "Wings of LIght"Review Date: 2007-01-17
The prose is rhythmic, but Swinburne's grand style sometimes tries too hard; that is, it begins to sound overwritten: "The next morning, the forest, from mossy floor to canopy, moves in flashes of yellow wings." "The bromeliad with a notch in it's wing perches on a bromeliad living on the branch of a fig tree." Some sentences are too long, or too illiterative: "Many of them fly to feed on the forest flowers." Some readers will enjoy these lush poetic sounds; however, I found them distracting, and the language may be somewhat too complex for toddlers. There's also one annoying mismatch of text and illustration. We read that "a yellow butterfly with a notch in its wing, sliced by a bird's beak," flutters by, but the butterfly (the one we follow throughout the book from its initial flight to its tired Disney-like "cycle of life" ending) is a small speck in the background, it's confusing bird-sliced notch barely visible.
Generally, however, the book presents an oooh- and ahhhh-inspiring narrative of the long migration path. There's a migration map part way through (although it shows only the USA leg of the migration; Central America is out of the picture),and an afterward which ponders--without directly answering--how such a small insect can make a trip of thousands of miles. By far, the best part of the book, unusually good, in fact, are the gripping watercolors of Mr. Hiscock. I think the book is most appropriate for older grade-schoolers who can understand the text, and who have some library skills to do further research. 29 pages (including frontispiece and afterward), on high quality paper, from Boyds Mills Publishing.

A Great Family SagaReview Date: 2008-10-18
This one is about Alice Luckett and her family. When the book starts Alice is 9 years old and the year is 1928 and her father has just died, at the end of the book Alice is 19 and it is 1938. Alice goes to live with her grandparents Edith and Monty and her Uncle Peter. She becomes very close to the people next door Nell and Eric Ainslie. There is also Uncle Frank, Aunt Cecily and her cousin Madison. Frank and Monty both have secrets.
I really enjoyed this book.

4 Women X 5 Rich Pages Each = Tons of ContentReview Date: 2006-06-18
The artist's innovative and entertaining use of layout and color developed over his years as a political and educational cartoonist (full disclosure: I have known Bentley for many years, and saw early versions of many of the narratives that ended up in the Chester the Crab series). Unlike some graphic novels or other comics, which can be confusingly dense, this book succeeds in having both variety and clarity.
Schools and parents who want their kids to learn plenty of real content should consider using this author/artist's work. This book has five richly illustrated and fact-filled pages on each of four heroic women. The result is education on history, geography, politics, and even culture -- the author is a fine historian who knows how important both context and accuracy are to any learner. Parents will love these books too (and are more likely to catch some of the multi-level humor subtly embedded in the stories and pictures).
One note: even though this is a series for students, Bentley is unafraid to address sensitive issues and unwilling to gloss over the unpleasant aspects of history, as many texts for children once did. This is history and art from someone who loves and respects both.

COWBOY STAR WILLIAM BOYD DEAD AT 77 - 100
Boyd appeared as Hopalong Cassidy on the cover of numerous national magazines, such as the August 29, 1950 issue of Look Magazine and the November 27, 1950 issue of Time Magazine --- Oddly, both Clark Gable and Robert Mitchum experienced their first big breaks in movies playing bearded villains in westerns starring Boyd.
William Boyd died in 1972 in Laguna Beach, California and was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California --- He is survived by his wife, actress Grace Bradley Boyd --- (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
