A Wish Come True

This book is just plain wonderful. What I thought about as I read it was how I wish someone would have exposed me to a book like this when I was a child. The beautiful illustrations, bright and capturing the spirit of each poem, pull one into the page, set the young reader in the right direction. Then the words of each poem take the reader beyond, to that wonderful place words create inside, with the intensity only poetry can create among words. If taken as a whole, the reader will find it to be a complete journey of a child's urban environment, from looking out to the city bellow in Langston Hughes' "City," on to the crowded streets, in and out of the park, the playground and the bustling workers, back to home again, and the end of another day with a "Manhattan Lullaby" by Norma Farber. The reader discovers that the poetry goes beyond the images brought to mind, to create feelings, a sense of motion while also a sense of serenity and of being in the perfect spot. The book works in so many ways to give opportunity to seeing the beauty of the city and we the people that create it. It is a beautiful collection that works to expose and enhance the young child's perception of poetry and inspire those so inclined to create their own verse.

Great history that kids read! My 8 year old loves these books.

Boyd's Chester the Crab Comics are solid history that appeals to young readers. The timeline and bright, comic format make the books easy to read and Chester, the wise and wise-cracking crab is the guide through visits to each time and place in the past. But don't let the format fool you, even topics like slavery in Slavery's Storm are given complexity. Boyd does not shy away from painful parts of the American past and young readers feel like they are taken seriously when they are presented with the details that make history full of contradictions. My 8 year old son asks for these books.

Snow & Snow: Photograph and Poetry Together
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-24
TEXT SUMMARY= Each short, rhyming poem about the accompanying snow picture is writen on either a one or two page spread with title and page number refering to the index.

VISUAL SUMMARY= Beautiful colour photographs capture the different moods of snow presented in different locations. The layout is varied with fullpage spreads, pictures watermarked in the background, mirrored pictures, and pictures offset from the edges.

CRITIQUE= This entire book-entity is a work of art, as the layouts vary to add variety to the mostly white images and black text and the pictures so perfectly express the picture they are pared with. This sense of unity can be attributed to the fact that unlike most picture books, the Stemple's photographs came before the text. The poems were only produced after he had given the photographs to his mother, Jane Yolen, who was then directly inspired by them. The short poems would most likely hold a child's attention with their humour and amusing rhymes.

I really liked this book of poems. All of the poems are a lot of fun to read and the illustrations are really cute, colorful and eye-catching. The poems are about topics that all teachers, parents and school-aged children can relate to. I am in the process of getting my BS in Elementary Education and this is definitely a book that I want to read to my students and keep in my classroom library someday.

A whimsical and fun book of storytelling poetry

Someone Could Win A Polar Bear is a whimsical and fun book of storytelling poetry especially suited for young readers. Illustrated with highly simplistic and abstract black-and-white caricatures, Someone Could Win A Polar Bear is lyrical, amusing, delightful, and highly recommended storytime or bedtime reading for little folks. The Rover: The rover arrived at a river./The river arrived with a roar./A ravine that the river had riven/Made its roaring reverberate more.//The river raved so that the rover/Reviled it. "Rage, river," said he./"Though you rock the ravine you have riven,/Your rage is no is no ravage to me!"//Thus ever the revenant rover/Reverts to the rhetoric of man./Than which, though it roar like a raver,/What rock-wrecking river's rage can?

Stellar Storytelling

Review Date: 2006-05-16
Readers who have read Glassie's other books about Ballymenone will likely find this book adds to an already rich understanding of this remarkable little community. The specific information about the changes in the community from the 1970s and early 80s up to the present is fascinating. It is also interesting, and moving, to discover more complete life histories of the area's stellar storytellers, musicians, and historians. I especially appreciated Glassie's further reflections about what it means to do research within the community. The book combines information from the earlier books, but the presentation is fresh and new. It's great to have a full treatment of mumming within this volume, and I enjoyed reading new stories as well as new presentations of earlier ones that are already in print. What puts the icing on the cake, however, is the wonderful CD that accompanies this volume. The chance to hear the voices of Hugh Nolan, Michael Boyle, Ellen Cutler, Peter Flanagan and other gifted artists keeps their memories come alive and makes this a poignant contribution to an understanding of Irish history, culture, and folklore.

Once in a bleu moon an author comes along with information that is so mind blowing, that the individual reading the information has to wonder if this person is a crackpot or just insane. The book will capture those very emotions that humanity says we all should experience when dealing with subjects that are mind wrenching and horrific. Mr. Graves , the investigator, has found ample evidence based on facts presented to suggest that our government, military, political, and medical industrial complexes have worked in conjunction to produce viruses that are population reducing and deadly to specific groups while other factions attempt to cover up the evidence or just remain unusually silent. The book in chocked full of incriminating evidence, from the nine years of research and detective work the author has done , with the slam dunk or missing link being the 1971 flowchart which conclusively shows "20,000 scientific papers which conclusively prove a candidate virus was developed and mass produced." The initial part of the book starts with the history of the development of aids ( you will be surprised) and the major players involved, (you will be shocked). These individuals make sure the project is carried on as planned. Then the research ends and the court battle begins, with copies of letters to leading officials and powerful individuals. Finally ending with the court cases filed by Mr. Graves, the lawyer. I found the research well documented, with new information densely packed in this 259 paged book. A shocking look at the truth.
