This is a lovely, sensitive book with exquisite rhyme and illustrations. Parents will enjoy reading it to their children almost as much as the children will love hearing it over and over again.

Lucinda's grandfather is forced to leave England in disgrace, and settles in Australia. His son Fred takes over the management of a run-down station in the Riverina, where his tenacity in the face of adverse conditions eventually makes him a wealthy man. The Vanes buy "Turella", one of the finest houses in Toorak, where Melba sings and the cream of Melbourne society gathers for garden parties. At Government House, Lucinda meets Captain Hugo Brayford, the new A.D.C. and in what seems to everybody to be a perfect match, they are married and leave for England. Here the whole course of Lucinda's life changes. Her marriage founders and her former life of ease and wealth is replaced by wartime auterity. She becomes a troubled and ultimately tragic figure.

If you are to have only two books on your boat the first has to be an almanac and the second is this. It contains everything you need to know about sailing, laid out in clear and concise terms. You will not find a better sailing handbook. If you are studying for a yachtmasters or sailing certificate then you will find it invaluable. I have been using this book for 13 years and it is as new to me today as it was on the first day.

A time capsule that's all too timely
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-22
In the 1960s, Malcolm Boyd was known as a "hip, controversial" priest, a Freedom Rider & participant in the civil rights & antiwar movements. He was in the vanguard of the attempt to make Christianity contemporary & relevant, something to be lived in all its difficulty & beauty, rather than something to be used to control people & their spiritual aspirations. In this book, covering the year of 1967 through day-by-day entries, he puts the reader into those times, using his own thoughts & meditations, pop culture references, excerpts from contemporary books & magazines, and letters from troubled & searching Americans, from high school students to housewives to businessmen to college professors.

What's fascinating is how contemporary so much of this seems even now. Simply replace a few 1960s names with 21st century names, and it's plain to see that America still suffers from many of the cultural & spiritual wounds depicted in these pages. If the racism isn't as overt now, it still exists; and in any case, gay Americans have become the newest public target of self-righteous bigotry. And certainly the crass materialism, the emptiness of so much "entertainment," is even worse today than it was in 1967.

It's also fascinating to see just how articulate so many of the letter writers are -- "ordinary" people, for the most part, but thoughtful in a way that's often frowned upon today. It's hard to imagine many 15 year olds writing the sort of letter that one 15 year old then wrote ... yet surely many of the same deeply felt questions must haunt today's teenagers. Where are the answers they seek? Surely not in the narrow, simplistic, fundamentalist mindset which currently dominates the spiritual scene!

In any case, this remains a rich, powerful volume, certainly worth reading & contemplating. Read it first as a revealing glimpse into our country's recent past, in which the roots of our present troubles can be clearly discerned. Then read it for its timely quality, as the troubling questions it raises still await true & meaningful answers. Most highly recommended!

A history of the conquering of Israel, and especically Masada, by the Roman Empire. A brief discussion of the Archaelogical site as it exists today. Interesting and accurate portrayal. Contains very good black and white illustrations and will be of interest to those of the Jewish faith, those who are interested in Israel, the Jewish history, or those with Jewish friends. I recommend this book to students from the 4th grade up. Teachers and parents will also find this interesting.

Ably edited by Nancy Boyd Webb (University Distinguished Professor of Social Work and registered play therapy supervisor), Mass Trauma And Violence: Helping Families And Children Cope is a deeply serious and comprehensive resource of essays concerning a wealth of ways to help children and families deal with community violence, war, and terrorist attacks. With detailed case examples, the wisdom of expert contributors, and candid discussion ranging from music therapy and sandplay art, dealing with cultural resistance to mental health services, issues concerning the modalities, timing, and treatment of traumatized children and adolescents, and much more. A much needed and welcome cutting-edge contribution to psychology and social work reference shelves.

Touching story about girl and horse!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1997-03-14
This is a horse story different from most I've read. In most books, the horse is miraculasly cured by the end. In this, however, this is not necesarily true. The horse and rider still have a long way to go before comeplete healing(the horses might not ever be comepletely healed) but there is is a satisfying ending. Great characterization. I felt as if I actually knew the characters and the girl was *my best friend* and I could relate to her problems. This is a great book for people(young and old) who share a deep compassion for horses. I truly enjoyed this book

Homespun Homiletics

Review Date: 2000-04-15
This small book is a handy collection of the illustrative parables that President Boyd K. Packer has given over the years as a General Authority and an Apostle. It is a wonderful selection that leaves you wanting more.

The strength of this book is that it is not "A-Bomb," hard-line theology. This book shows how God works through normal situations and through normal people. Practical theology at its best.

President Packer is an accomplished amature artist, and many of his works illustrate this book and give it a homey, warm feeling.
