Down the Glory Road is a must read -- not only for African-Americans, but for all Americans. This comprehensive look at the grand history of Blacks in America reads more like a gripping page-turner than the thorough background it really is. Mr. Boyd makes the past come alive with his lively and often humorous writing. It is obvious that Mr. Boyd has done his homework in sharing this information (much of it never taught in schools) to the reading public. Excellent!

Dream Makers - The Children Speak

Review Date: 2003-10-26
My daughter was on of the children whose essay was chosen for inclusion in tnis book. The essay contest was a great way to have 5th and 6th greaders think about their lives in the future. Mr. Waldman is an illustrator whose drawings keep children interested during story time but the essays are what keep the parents reading. Our children have seen things in thier young lives that many of us as adults never had to see or hear about. It's a beautiful book and it contains heartfelt thoughts. Funds from this book assist kids. Buy it for your little ones - - buy it for yourself.

The 78th Fighter Group is owed a debt of gratitude by all who treasure freedom. The guys of the 78th cut a wide path thru the skies over France, Holland, and Germany to stem the tide of Facism in WWII. The book is one of only two that I would call "definitive" on the Americans and the missions they flew out of the famed Duxford Air Field in England. Duxford was home to the Americans who flew for the British before America entered the war. Lots of data, pictures, personal accounts. If you have even the faintest interest in what some of our boys were doing in WWII you will want to get this book. These guys put the daring in derring-do. If you have more than a faint interest in the material you should already have the book.

James Boyd White has crafted another excellent exploration of the intersections of writing, law, culture, and society. A must read for those interested both in the art of writing well and in enhancing the ability to understand the various meanings contained in specific texts. While his specific areas of interest are Classical Studies and Law, the precise methods he uses apply to writers everywhere. Want to give an edge to your writing? Then read, "The Edge of Meaning."

A beautifully illustrated book for making predictions.

i used this story in my 2nd grade classroom for a lesson on predictions. My class was glued for 40 minutes waiting to see if their predictions came true, and to see what would happen to Electra when her mother found out she had eaten all the cream off the pastries meant for her mother's tea party. It's a great story about snowball effect, honesty, and unconditional love.

Delightful adaptation of Little Bill story to a book
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-14
This is a cute little book featuring the preschool hero of Bill Cosby's animated series on PBS, Little Bill. Since the illustrations (which are fabulous, by the way) appear to be done in the very same style as the television cartoon, I suspect they may be stills from an actual episode. If that's the case, the writers have done a remarkable job of translating it into a kid's picture book.

Little Bill himself is a kid who lives downtown with his family and his pet hamster, Elephant. One day, while LB is distracted, Elephant wanders off in his bedroom before he could be put back in his ball. Poor LB thinks his friend has run away from home. He and his whole family search the house, in both likely and unlikely places, until Bill's older brother comes up with a plan to lure Elephant back that just might work.
The story has a nice, unhurried pacing and sequence that little ones will have fun following as the family explores the house in their search. I like that it subtly encourages children to engage their problem solving skills and search each page for where the hamster is hiding. There is also an underlying message of the importance of compassion and helping. Like the several episodes that I have watched on tv with my two kids, this story is great material for preschoolers that they have no trouble identifying with.

A warm, funny, entertaining, well recommended picturebook
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-12
Everyone in the Puckett family loves music, plays an instrument and sings. But every time Emma Jo, a spirited young girl, tries to sing the family's old hound dog raises a terrible howl -- no matter how softly she sings! Then comes the day of the big Puckett family reunion with its sound of fiddles, banjos, and kinfolk singing. When Emma Jo's brother suggests that she get up and sing "This Little Light of Mine", she jumps up, faces a whole houseful of Pucketts, opens her moth to give her song voice -- and lets out a quivering squeak. But all eventually ends well when Emma Jo gets a little help from a friend. Faye Gibbons' Emma Jo's Song is a warm, funny, entertaining, well recommended picturebook story for young readers that is engagingly illustrated with Sherry Meidell's folksy artwork.
