This gentle, cozy picture book is a perfect story for bedtime. The Star Blanket is not just a blanket passed down from one generation to the next. It's also a reminder of all the members of the family whose love surrounds the child. A perfect starting point for naming all the people in your own child's family who love him. This one will touch your heart.

It is a shame this book is out of print. I had to purchase a used one. I am an English teacher in Brazil and my students love Stories From Lake Wobegon. I use it in conversation classes and regular classes. It is a must for teachers and professors who want to stimulate their students' interest in the learning of English. It is also a great chance for students to be in contact with real authentic material through humorous stories. Here's my advice for the publishers : print it again!

A great book for ESL students.

I love listning to Prarie Home Companion and now my students love Lake Wobegon too.

Each chapter begins with a sketch and questions to get the student thinking about the topic. Next is text from the Lake Wobegon monologues by Garrison Keillor. After the text are insitfull questions including vocabulary, comprehension, and writing.

I would recommend this book for ESL students in the intermediate to high intermediate range.

An adventure story perfect for reading aloud day or night
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-27
John Sandford's black and white woodcuts lend drama and action to the story of a scary Hodag - but appearances aren't everything, as lumberjack Olee will tell you: the Hodag is friend to all lumberjacks and a good beast really - and having done many good turns, it's now time for his lumberjack friends to help him! Caroline Arnold bases her story on those she heard as a child and captures the feel of her past in an adventure story perfect for reading aloud day or night.

A funny story

First I thought it was a story about this scary monster, but then I found out it was not scary at all. It was a funny story about how these lumberjacks tricked these animal catchers from taking the Hodag to the zoo. My favorite part was when the lumberjacks tricked the animal catchers when they said the Hodag lived on the other side of the forest. The funniest part was when the Hodag scared the animal catchers so bad they fell into their own trap. I am going to tell my teacher about this book and I hope she lets me bring it to school to share with all my friends. Thank you for letting me read it.

Becca was so excited to finally get to review her own book she read it immediately. She was asking me if she could keep it to show all her friends about this new book she had read. She literally laughed out loud when they fell into the trap. Great job!!!

White is an perceptive reader of poetry and theological reflections who has his own idiosyncratic but highly accesible style; all at the service of making George Herbert's poetry shine more brightly for others...not at all to stand in the spotlight himself. The "self-consuming artifacts" that Herbert constructs to effectively communicate religious truth and human uncertainty are well represented by White's own writing style, a steady candleflame that slowly and inobtrusively fades into the brighter dawn of Herbert's meditations rising into the reader's consciousness. I would recommend this book equally strongly for someone who has never heard of Herbert, or for a long-time lover of his poems and essays. (2007 note - but you'll have to look around for a used copy now, sad to say!)

A very good book. I think it provides a really nice way for kids to think about doing something for someone else (and, in the end, for themself, too).

This book was just excellent. It really tells a true account of how a boy feels when he goes fishing with his dad -- the good and the bad. It's a diary and a love story in one! This one is a great gift for any father.

I have read two books by Theresa Martin Golding and have already started to search for more. The Truth About Twelve is a perfect book for school suggestion lists or just for reading in spare time. I could read this story a hundred more times and never get tired of it. I think they should do a movie of it.

This book is about a girl named Lindy. She has a big secret. That she cant tell anyone. She wont tell anyone where she lives her phone number or anything. Even the nicest girl in school. If you want to know the secret read this book. This book is best for kids who are at least 11. Younger children might not like it.

You will be entranced by the lilting language in this superbly crafted tale of a girl and her grandmother and the bond they share in protecting the turtles that come to their island shore to lay eggs each year. Just as the turtles face dangers from nature around them, so Magdalena must face adversity before she discovers the true meaning of her grandmother's promise. Jim Postier's lovely illustrations capture the emotions of Magdalena and her grandmother and the magic of "turtle time" on their moonlit beach.

Carole Crowe packs much warmth and love in this picture book about a young girl and her relationship with her grandmother. This story is about more than Magdalena's care for her precious turtles, it's about the power of love and the circle of life. The language is lyrical, each word a carefully chosen gem. Jim Postier's beautiful illustrations set just the right mood for this treasure of a book.

Why Turtles Are Endangered

Review Date: 2008-09-29
I used this book to culminate a unit on Sea Turtles with second grade. After learning all about their nesting, life expectancy. and turtle predators, it wasn't until I read this book to students that they really understood how few turtles make it to the sea, let alone to adulthood. The students actually gasped when they saw the picture of the first predator and the number of eggs taken. This book had a great impact on student understanding. The pictures were vivid and well chosen to demonstrate all the different predators turtles have from egg to hatchling. A teacher knows they have found a great book when there is total silence until the last page.

I thought this book was really great because I always loved turtles and the sad part was she laid 100 eggs and only one survived. I think that this turtle book gives alot of information about turtle eggs and baby turtles. The pictures were really great. I would recommend this book to everybody because it is a really great story and fun to read.

I love this book! Andrea Butler (the early literacy guru) read it aloud at a seminar I went to. I was devasted to discover it was out of print - but no longer!

The story is highly repetitive, contains superb language, has a silly plot, and great illustrations - just what every Kindergartner wants. I can't wait to read it to them. It will be a "read it again" book, I am sure.

This five-star, totally hot Vergil workbook will make the difference between being a young person with maximal command of the Aeneid and being a young person with a goofy "duh" look on his face at AP Latin test time. Also, the price is right. Go for this workbook, kids.
