As a Director of Christian Education, I am always looking for new and relevant material. I found it in T. L. Lewis' FROM BOOTCAMP TO THE BATTLEFIELD. In fact, it is now a standard part of our Sunday School Curriculum. I highly recommend this book and the Leaders' Guide that goes along with it.

"Seldom have I read a book that gave me a totally new portrait painted on familiar landscapes of Scripture. It's refresing always to hear "the other side of the story." Tony Lewis' writing is like a breath of fresh air on a humid, hot stifling summer day. I appreciate also Dr. Lewis' obvious love affair with the English language. I recommend this book without hestitaion to the widest possible reading audience."

I read this book in 1996. I have read it at least twice, some chapters more than that. Rev. Lewis has compiled several of his sermons in one volume. The sermons are a joy to read. The imagery is clear, the examples are memorable and the point or message remains long after you put the book away. This is a book you will want to share with friends. I did. The book title comes from one of the sermons. My favorite sermon is "How to Catch a Fox." Get the book. You WILL enjoy it and talk about it for months to come.

This coffee-table book details every movie and TV show in which Gene Autry ever appeared, with casts, crew, plot, locations, writers, backgrounds, you name it. Author Boyd Magers has written many books and articles on vintage westerns, and draws on his own researchers and others, all footnoted, in this compendium of the man who almost single-handedly created the singing cowboy. Each movie writeup contains bonus material highlighting another star, director, sidekick or some other key person involved in the picture. Gene Autry fans will love it; non-fans will learn from it.

This is the perfect book for big or little "collectors." They'll love Ebenezer Overall, the old prospector who saves everything for a rainy day and becomes the town hero as a result.

Ms. Mitchell's text is fun to read, and Mr. Chartier's illustrations are delightful.

Ebenezer was saving nails, lumber, shingles--all kinds of junk for a rainy day--and even though he took grief for his packrat ways, it was a good thing he did! When a monsoon wiped out the town, all that junk came in real handy--that junk and the gold Eb had been hiding for the rainy day that finally came. Eb models the ultimate community spirit when he shares it all...

This is a wonderful tall tale that kids should love to read. It's also good to read aloud. It has lots of fun western words, fast action when the gullywasher hits, and a good lesson at the end. The pictures are gorgeous, too.

The book may not be for children only. My 73-year-old uncle over in Idaho is kind of a pack rat, and he thinks the book is great.

Halloween Pie -- It's Delicious

My son received Halloween Pie for his 3rd birthday and it's become a family favorite. In fact, for Halloween this year, we purchased two new editions. We replaced the wornout original in our home library and donated the other edition to our elementary school's library. Both my boys, ages 9 and 6, love the book. And the recipe for Halloween Pie is truly fantastic. The six-year-old makes it himself and brought it into his class for his 'star student week." And when we needed to contribute a traditional American dish to UN Day at our international school in Panama, we made Halloween Pie.

My daughter loves this book and is making me do a review on it! She loves the bright, contrasting colors of the excellent illustrations. I appreciate the colors too with the fine use of chiaroscuro and the hungry fiends after Old Witch's Halloween Pie and yes, of course, the silly tombstone epitaphs. The recipe in the back is such an intelligent hook to get the ones that do the buying, us parents, to say yes to this one! I appreciate an entertaining book with clever marketing. You have to not only sell the kids but the parents too--Tunnell and O'Malley--GREAT JOB!
Note: This is a great bedtime story book because all of the culprits that ate Old Witch's pie fall asleep in her house. They aren't scary and my daughter scares pretty easily. I highly recommmend it! Great price too! 9/10 stars.

We discovered this book two years ago in our public library and fell in love with it. The story is clever and the illustrations are excellent. Even though the book is filled with ghosts and zombies it's not too scary to read to my 3, 4 and 6 year-olds. My favorite thing is how FUN it is for the reader. You can't help but almost perform the story as you read it with witchy and windy voices. It has become a new family tradition for us to read Halloween Pie for the weeks leading up to Halloween each year. And of course, we make our own Halloween pie from the recipe at the back of the book.

This is the defintive book on LDS temples and temple worship. It merits six or seven stars.

Boyd K. Packer, LDS apostle and educator traces the history, doctrine and function of the LDS temples, temple worship, and temple work. His chapter on symbolism should be memorized! As with the chapter "First and Every Time." This is an essential book (for insiders and ousiders) on understanding what Latter-day Saints belive and understand about the temple.

The most authoritative modern treatise on temple worship

Review Date: 2007-06-27
Many members will be familiar with this title merely as a pamphlet given to those who are preparing to receive their temple endowments for the first time, and they may not even recognize that the pamphlet they receive is adapted from this text. I read the complete text on my mission, and it gives a comprehensive picture of the temple experience from the beginning of revealed temple ordinances to the ultimate goal of exaltation.

This book does not focus on the specifics of the temple ordinances, but rather it focuses on the ways of being involved in temple worship, from being worthy to enter, to being open to learn from the ceremony, to serving those who have passed beyond. The book also goes into the impact that temple worship should have on our personal lives.

Reading this book gives an entirely new perspective on the temple experience for one who has been through the temple and returns with great frequency. It opens up the next level of participation in temple worship. If you find your temple experience to be stagnating, this book is for you.

For members and nonmembers alike.

PResdient Boyd K. Packer, acting presdient of the Presdient of the Quorum of the Twelve apostles has written a marvelous book about the temples of the Church opfJEsus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has a very soft and gentle voice whichmakes this book more of a conversation among friends than a stuffy lecture in starched collars.

He covers the history of the temples, ancient and mordern, but more inportantly ocvers the doctrine, the "Why!" of the temple. We build these temples to preform weddings, since we view marriage as eternal, not a "'till death do you part" affair.

In California, we have four operating and three under construction, and in Utah there are eleven operating. In the State of New York, we have one operating, and one planned. Overall, we have one hundred seven operating, with ten under construction, and seven announced, for a grand total of one hundred twenty-four.

Book Pioneers New Philosophy: Real Estate Consumer Advocacy
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-01
Books on buying and selling real estate abound, but it is truly rare to read a real estate book that breaks new ground -- or indeed, pioneers a new philosophy and launches a new movement: real estate as consumer advocacy. This seminal work, authored by real estate sales and financing experts Patricia Boyd and Lonny Coffey, sounds the clarion call to buyers and sellers -- as well as to real estate brokers, mortgage lenders and other service providers --for a new consumer orientation in real estate transactions. As the authors note, real estate transactions have heretofore been treated as the selling of a product, whether the product be the property itself or the mortgage loan that finances it. The historical focus has, therefore, been on salesmanship: getting the property sold or the loan made. Lacking in this focus has been the interests of the real estate consumer -- the buyer or the seller. This book introduces something new and something revoluntionary into the world of real estate transactions: a view of the buying or selling of real estate as a "consumer-driven" process, of buyers and sellers as informed consumers, and of real estate brokers and mortgage lenders as consumer advocates. The book serves as a road map for buyers and sellers who want to participate actively and intelligently in their realty transactions... and who want to stop getting "ripped off" by brokers, lenders and other service providers who put their own interests ahead of the consumer's interests. Just as importantly, the book shows real estate brokers and mortgage lenders how to work with this dawning new world of informed consumers -- not in the old way as salesmen, but rather as professional consumer advocates. It is the twin goal of the book, one it certainly attains, of educating real estate buyers and sellers how to be informed consumers and also training brokers, lenders and service providers as to how to be their advocates. Patricia Boyd brings vast experience as a top-producing real estate broker, real estate trainer and instructor and Certified Finance Specialist, to produce a practical, well-written and inspiring book that may well launch a new way of buying and selling real estate. As a former real estate broker with a number of professional Realtor designations (ABR, CIPS, CRB, CRS, and GRI), and now as a real estate attorney actively advocating the interests of buyer and seller clients, I applaud this book as the herald of a new real estate consumer revolution.

A very easy to read and understand book full of knowledge and wisdom about the purchase that can and does create stress and confusion in most people's lives. Explains and demonstrates ways for consumers to save money that is generally "lost" in the process. I have bought and sold homes for a number of years and never knew some of the information that was explained in the book. The web site listings for the various subjects is an excellent resource. It is the best "how to" book for the largest purchase of most people's lives.

The mortgage maze can rapidly become confusing, especially if you are a first time buyer. This clearly written and informative book walks you through every step of the process, providing detailed information on the dizzying aray of loans that most lenders offer; more importantly, it tells you how to appraise each lender so that you reallly do get the best deal. In real estate and lending today, "caveat emptor"--let the buyer beware--is truer than ever, and books like this one are more needed than ever. Sara Holbrook's I Never Said I Wasn't Difficult is one of those rare books that draws in the younger reader. The poems touch the heart of many a school kid. They talk about the types of circumstances that occur in young people's lives. For example, "The Storm That Was" is a perfect example of needing a person to vent your frustrations to. "I rolled in like a storm" and vented. But since you listened, "the storm... it blew away." Of course the "I hate" lines throughout the poem really connect with school kids. "Wrong" touches on the concept that kids hate being wrong during an argument with their parents. "What's worse than being wrong is... / maybe / you were right." Again, this collection of poems, from the ones mentioned above to "A Step," a poem about the possible first kiss (or more), to "Private Property," a poem about the sanctity of the body, to the touching last four lines of one of my personal favorites, "Scream Bloody Murder," there is a lesson to be learned that a child/teenager can connect with and understand.

The book is also a wonder for all ages. When parents lose control or just don't quite understand what their child is going through, maybe don't remember what it was like to be school students with peer pressure and problems, that's where this book also shines. If the parents read it, it will bring back memories of the way it was when "they were young," and not the fabricated idea of perfection that they may have in their minds, but the true memories of a disturbing time in their history. Sara Holbrook's poetry can do just that, and then maybe parents will understand their children just a little bit more.

In conclusion, this book not only helps children understand the problems they are going through, but it also helps parents remember those same problems. They can help their children survive the most awkward years of life.

The poetry in the collection is real life of any American teenager. The poems depict the thoughts of teenagers and their outlook on everything from boring school to overreacting parents who spaz out when kids don't see things the way their parents do. I honestly thought my 16 year old daughter was talking to me!

I originally bought this book to share with my sixth grade class of 11 and 12-year-olds. After the class had a chance to read the short poems, one of my students became attached to the book and re-read it several times, from front to back. This was my reluctant reader. He saw himself in many of the poems and at the end of the week I gave him the book to keep.

I am an eighth grade English teacher, and have had copies of "I Never Said I Wasn't Difficult" in my classrooms for the last seven years. Students reach for it again and again, to laugh, to find sympathy, and to share with their friends. Sara is our class poet every year. She crosses gender lines so that boys and girls find a voice that speaks to them, and she gives us a place to find common ground in our discussions. I can't recommend this book-and her others-highly enough.

This is the perfect unwinding book as it takes you on a dancing journey through summer days and then retreats you into the night. The creative use of words in poetry will grasp your attention and allow you some freedom of expression to excite and/or relax your little one. The illustrations are a beautiful and refreshing addition which alone allows for some parental freedom as well. You'll see what I mean when you get started with your own Lemonade Sun. My daughter is captivated for the entire book. This one always works for bedtime at our house. I am now a true fan of Rebecca Kai Dotlich and look forward to her next work.

This book took me back to my childhood and sweet memories.

Lemonade Sun reminded me of my own childhood; I too, grew up in the fifties. It brought back so many memories. I could almost smell the fireflies that we collected in glass jars, and the thrill of being able to do double-dutch longer than the other kids. The lemonade stands, bubbles, dragonflies and jacks are all dear to me. It certainly is a book that children will love, and adults will cherish. My personal favorite is Summer Swinging. The illustrations are incredible! It is truly a fun book for all ages.

For those that work with pre-school through elementary age children this is a great resource for inexpensive and creative art and crafts. Projects use items that are either low cost or items that can be obtained through recycling. I work with groups of children on a daily basis and find it very helpful.

This is a great resouce for a wide range of craft activities; there is something for every age/skill level (elementary) and budget. The full-color illustrations are very helpful.

I teach third grade and love this book. With art gone from the schools, we teachers spend a lot of our own money trying to give kids a sense of creativity. This craft book was just what I needed. I have so many of these household items--wrapping paper tubes, egg cartons, magazines and newspapers--and now my kids and I can create without my having to go back into my purse. Of course, some of the items are a little elementary (no pun intended) for third graders, but there a lot of things in here that we can enjoy. I have a friend whose five-year old fell in love with this book. She sat with me and went through every item. She's so excited about making some of these things. I'm getting a copy for her.

Packed with ideas to last a long, long time!

My five year-old has spent hours with this book, pouring over the ideas to become inspired to make her own projects. This is a TERRIFIC resource to have on hand. Great pictures are included with multiple ideas so that even a non-reader can get the idea. We absolutely LOVE this book!
