Engaging Private Sector in Environmental Protection
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-30
Business which is based on profit maximization is usually considered to be in conflict with the goals of environmental protection. This contradiction can be even more severe when the business owned by private sectors in developed countries extend their activities in far-away underdeveloped areas. The book looks at the environmental protection from business perspectives, especially extractive industries' involvement in biodiversity conservation. It explores numerous cases ("best practices") showing how business interests reconcile with environmental protection goals. The dynamics of various stakeholders was investigated to illustrate how the business strategic calculation of benefit and cost has been shaped by other stakeholders. According to the authors, there are two major reasons of why business starts to voluntarily involve in environmental protection: corporate reputation (intangible value) and eco-efficiency (tangible value). The book is a big contribution to the empirical studies of how business operation has been shaped by environmental protection and vice versa. I recommend the book to environmental experts, project managers and corporate environmentalists.

Memoir about Isherwood and Bowles is fascinating.

I liked the memoir because it was straight-forward and made no apologies. It had an honest feel to it, and was well-written. I liked the book's feel of the 1960s decade, and it came across in an entertaining manner. Prosser is an excellent author, writes well. Good reading experience.

This book reveals a lot of things about Christopher Isherwood and Paul Bowles that have not been told before, and it is written in a clear, crisp style of writing that is entertaining and informative. It is a memoir that is a classic of its kind, for it is very honest, blunt, and to the point in discussing the author's life in the 1960s with touches of the present intermingling to make it an interesting story to share with readers who like the writings of Isherwood, Bowles, and Gerina Dunwich. There is material about Wicca and Vedanta, and Hollywood. I was held spellbound by the story and feel like I understand more about the type of human beings Isherwood and Bowles were, and how each writer helped Lee Prosser develop into the writer he is today. There are so many scenes and interactions in this fine memoir that I find it hard to decide which I liked best, except to say, all of them! This memoir is a great reading adventure, one that people interested in literature, Wicca, and Vedanta will find exciting. This is a firstrate memoir, and is the way an honest memoir should be given to readers. Excellent. I plan to give this book to friends as gifts. Congratulations to the author, Lee Prosser, for writing this memorable memoir. I salute his frank and candid way of sharing his life experiences. This is a five-star book, flawless, entertaining, candid. A great read! The California scenes with Prosser and Bowles and Isherwood are intimate, well-written, and important literary material. This is an important literary document, one that should be read by everyone interested in an unusual life of one man who reveals himself as a true existentialist in a strange landscape under the sheltering sky! Must reading for Isherwood/Bowles/Dunwich fans!

here. it's simply a great book, in the introduction i believe paul bowles mentions that a great narrator keeps his narrative thread equally taut at all times and this is precisely what the authour has done. the book is a compelling view of a life in a part of the world that differs wildly from where i was born, told with a coolness that should not be mistaken for detachment. it's a rewarding read and it hleps when trying to put things in perspective.

A timeless masterpiece of storytelling

Review Date: 2004-01-08
Paul Bowles first began translating the stories of contemporary native Moroccans in 1952, transcribing by hand the tales of Ahmed Yacoubi, several of which appeared in Evergreen Review. In the early 1960's, with the aid of a tape recorder, Bowles decided to pursue the preservation of Maghrebi oral literature. This decision was prompted in part by Bowles' acquaintance with Larbi Layachi, a young Moroccan who was working as a watchman at a café at nearby Merkala Beach. Layachi, although illiterate and not a "storyteller" in the true Arabic tradition, proved to be a master of the tautly spun narrative, and his story, obviously nothing more than thinly veiled autobiography, is told with the same stark, unembellished point of view that formed the basis of the Italian neo-realist cinema, yet virtually without pathos, sentimentality or moralizing of any sort. Basically left to fend for himself at the age of eight, Layachi works a series of jobs as shepherd, baker's helper, laborer, watchman, houseboy to a "Nazarene" gay couple, and as a petty trafficker in kif in the rough-and-tumble streets of Tangier at the cusp of post-colonialism, eventually winding up in jail, sentenced to hard labor in a rock quarry. Adversity raises its Medusa-like head on every other page, in the form of betrayal, denunciation, false accusations, uninformed decisions, corruption, or just plain bad luck, of which Layachi obviously had a very generous helping.
Whereas the typical westerner might have difficulty supporting Layachi's dogged fatalism in the face of constant defeat, failure, frustration and setbacks, the majority of which do seem to be of an unjust nature (despite Layachi's at times pathological tendency to blur the parameters of right and wrong), it's Layachi's very determination to go on no matter what that gives A Life Full of Holes its extremely positive and life-confirming slant. To survive such an uncompromisingly negative chain of events without becoming a burned-out, apathetic nihilist is a true test of faith. And while the Koran is frequently cited to explain or justify particularly heavy blows of fate or irrational human behavior ("It's the will of Allah," etc.), it's also Layachi's ironic and cynical sense of humor that serves as a buffer between himself and life's harder edges and as a comic foil against the perpetrators of ill will. Compellingly told and packed with detail, Layachi's story of survival is also one of simple poetry.

It's been a long time since I have enjoyed a book as much as this one. This is 100% storytelling at its best, juts the plain story of teenage love between Mohamed and Mina. It happens in Tangier (Morocco) probably in the 50's, just after or before Morocco's indepedence. The end is amazing and I wont spoil it for you.

In many ways, Marbet's simple style reminded me of Richard Brautigan. But while Brautigan strives to be simple, Mrabet just does it as a matter of fact.

All told, it's brilliantly told

Mrabet is a Moroccan man who literally tells stories. The American author Paul Bowles (THE SHELTERING SKY, etc.) tapes these stories and translates them into English for us. Lucky us.

This debut novel (published when Mrabet was 25) certainly has the slightly rambling but totally captivating force that we expect from the oral tradition. The prose is utterly simple and almost child-like, but the deadpan tone merely underscores the brutal motivations and rather amoral goings-on in the novel. Fret not: There's sorcery, lust, bisexuality, violence and all sorts of other goodies in store.

Fans of Paul Bowles' short fiction, like A DISTANT EPISODE and PAGES FROM COLD POINT, will certainly know what I mean -- and will certainly not want to miss out on Mrabet. This man deserves to be a star.

I agree completely with what the previous reviewer [Parhat] said and will not bore you with variations on a theme . I have all the books on Financial Astrology that have been published and this together with the books by David Williams and Louise McWhirter are the best around . Those who know French should read also G.L. Brahy .

Cycles and Stock Maket

I purchased this book a long time ago and did not realized itsimportance. Apparently the book keeps the good stuff later in the book, prefering to teach the reader with the basics of astrology. The technique is very valuable even for those who do not believe in astrology, which is the method of averaging GDP, Stock market indexes in relation to the cycles of the planets. Of course the techniques can be applied to cycles where it can be 1 year, 1.5 year, 4 year. Once you averaged them out , then using the bradley model, you can predict the stocks - non-linearly, with a VERY GOOD predictive accuracy! Softwares are critical for you to explore and can be obtained at Alphee.com or other books by Rob Merridian or David Williams in case this book is no longer available. I have explored every technologies known in the stock markets from chaos theory, neural networks, moon tides, technical analysis, fundamental analysis, cycle analysis, EMH, factoring analysis, value line, multiple linear regression, visual recurrence analysis, etc. etc. etc. and I can say with great confidence that there is something to astrology their timing can be deadly accurate! W.D. Gann predicted the stock market crash in 1929 to the very month, missing by only a couple of days. Two British astrologers actually predicted the stock market Crash of 1987 to the very day before the crash by one year in advanced. These are all documented and are reported to newspaper before it actually occurred. You will find the details how they managed to predict them. David Williams made a million in the stock market using his astrological techniques. One astrology fund outperformed the stock markets averages in 5 out of 7 years. You will find this and other information in this book, It will change how you view the markets. It totally changed me! All these amazing fact is well worth the reading. Use it along with your fundamental and technical indicators, it is indispensible! END

Every page of this book -- except two appendices (16 pgs: Sample Log Line and Treatment, and Sample Step Outline) -- is identical to what is found in "the Complete Screenwriter's Manual, another version of this book at $12.32 Amazon ($18.95 retail). That being said, the content that is identical is absolutely excellent. Both works outline in extreme detail how to format all the elements of a screenplay: dialogue, slug lines (scene designations), instructions or action description, parentheticals, and transitions. Copious examples of how to write into a screenplay the following: sound effects, flashbacks, phone conversations, car scenes, foreign languages, dreams, time-shifts, voiceovers, and much more. Also shows common MISTAKES in formatting that mark a script as the work of an amateur.

We're extremely happy that the book has been found to be an excellent resource.

We wanted to clarify why there are two books available on Amazon with two prices. Allyn & Bacon, a Pearson Education Company, is an educational publisher, and as such we publish books with pedagogical tools to be used in college courses. The edition with the sample log line and treatment and sample step outline appendices is for the education market. When we decided to publish an edition for the broader consumer market, titled The Complete Screenwriter's Manual: A Comprehensive Reference of Format and Style, the pedagogical tools were no longer necessary, and thus we could remove them and set the trade edition at a lower price.

First of all this book is not a new book but was first printed about fifty years ago. I stumbled onto my copy at a booksale a dozen years ago and have used it many times since. It is a wonderful resource for traditional New England Yankee cookery and is a great resource fo people who care about or study food history. It is full of wonderfully simple and delicious tradional recipes and captures the rich culinary history of the recent and not so recent past (the Pilgrims could have written some of these recipes!)

This book by Prof.Bowles explains the cocepts clearly. The difference between this book and other books on Structural design in steel is that it also includes discussions on the analysis of steel frames. Another advantage is that it gives examples in SI as well as FPS units. Several practical problems are discussed. Unfortunately, the book is very old(1980) and no new edition has been published. Even then it will serve as a good reference to all those working on Steel design.

Simon Spero has done a fine job amassing a catalogue of the Henry & Constance Bowles collection. This book has astonished me with its vivid images and beautiful pieces. I've loved it from the moment I got it. It has served as a wonderful reference as well as an inspiration. I've started my own collection because of this INCREDIBLE beautiful book. I hope every porcelain lover or lover of beautiful things buys at least one copy.
