My Daughter Loves This Book

I got this for my youngest daughter the summer before she started middle school. She was very anxious about the change to a new school. My daughter read this book in a day, laughed out loud several times, and really loved it. She even pointed out passages and sections to me, so it was something that we could share. I truly believe it helped allay some of her fears and concerns. The book was apparently written by a group of girls who were in or recently completed middle school, which I think made it more "real" for my daughter. I highly recommend it for girls getting ready to attend or already in middle school. (Maybe not so much for boys.)

It is important to note that I have never reviewed books online for anyone, but I have made an exception for the work of these five former students of mine. Their hard work on this book, begun when they were in the seventh grade, has really paid off in this handsome and direct guide for anyone trying to negotiate the halls of their new middle school. Funny, insightful, and full of real-life information teens can put to immediate use, this is an essential book to have for the transition into the teenage years.

A great book for anyone heading to middle school! It's not only full of terrific advice; it's also an inspiring story in itself (amazingly enough, the five authors wrote it while they were in middle school!). I sure wish I'd had a copy of this book back when I was eleven or twelve years old.

Make this your Fashion/Fitness Bible!
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-23
For those of us who are not in perfect shape, this book is like the answer to a prayer. It's the first book I've ever read that combines fashion tips with fitness tips. It was written by uber jeans model Paige Adams-Geller and fitness expert Ashley Borden. If you have too much junk in the trunk, Paige tells you how to dress to de-emphasize it, and Ashley helps you get rid of it. This really is a bible of tips. It covers fashion, nutrition and exercise, and all the tips are practical and sensible. I've read books that blithely say "Contact a well known local stylist," or "Find that perfect little Dior in a resale shop and accessorise it." Sadly, I live on planet earth where this is not possible. On the other hand, this book provides basic tips on small ways to alter your eating habits, easy to follow fitness and exercise tips, and some good ideas for dressing to emphasize your assets. It explains how to determine your body type and defines the styles that are best
for you ... and more important, how to find clothes that really fit. Regarding nutrition, I especially liked the tips that show how someone can stick to their food plan while on the road for business or holidays ... or if you are dating or married to Mr. Eats Everything and you have to share a table with pizza and pasta on a regular basis.

The fashion tips provided the biggest eye opener. It's amazing how, after reading the book, my sensibility about fit has improved. And it's true...clothes that fit well feel better and make you look better. Paige Adams-Geller is such a sensible woman for a fashionista, I almost forgive her for that model-perfect rear end. I've seen Ashley Borden on TV a couple of times, so I was familiar with her exercise routines. The book sticks to her basic principles of don't bite off more than you can chew when it comes to exercise. Keep it simple and do-able, and you'll stick with it. It's all about doing things in moderation so we don't walk away, and really, that's just good thinking.

And finally, the book does one other smart thing. It's divided into chapters by body part - so flat-chested among us don't have to read it from A to Z and suffer through tips about disguising an overabundant bust before reaching the section on derrieres. The book helped me understand more about my body shape. Instead of the old fashioned "Pear Shaped" or "Hour Glass" -- which nobody really is, the book uses gemstone cuts to define body types, with serious explanations and real measurements to guide where you fit in. I would recommend this book to anyone who is fed up with those super diet books and the recent crop of "Great Style In Five Minutes" type books that assume we are all size zeros, have secret swiss bank accounts, or magical resale shops where people drop off their worn-once couture. This is a good real-world book with real world solutions for real world women and their body/style issues. The book is worth the investment...I figure I save ten times that amount over and
over again every time I don't buy something that's not cut for my body type.

My mom got me this book for my birthday because I love fashion and even though I'd like to think that I already know a lot about style, this book had some great fashion tips that I never even thought of! So this is a great gift for both those who would like a little fashion help and for those who already know a lot (like me!). And even though I'm not that into fitness, I was really inspired by the fitness portion of the book because it seemed so easy. I've already tried some of the excersizes and so far so good! Great book overall!

I got this book from my aunt for christmas and the cool thing is - it kills 2 birds with 1 stone. you don't need to buy 2 books. And the authors talk simply and directly, I learned about a lot of fashion boo boos I was making because of the shape/size of my body. It helped me look at my closet differently.

Thank you Ashley!!!

I just wanted to suggest this read for anyone who struggles with all the conflicting diet/fitness information out there. Ashley breaks things down in the most simplistic and least intimidating manner. I've been following her lead ever since I read this book -- and the results and ease of her program are so encouraging. The pictures are fun...her program and the language in which she breaks things down are so simple....anyone can make it happen for themselves... Thank you Ashley for all the tips and guidance! I'm hoping you'll make an exercise video for all of your readers soon!

As a member of Louise Borden's family, I'd deffinatly say that this book is worth buying. This book gave me the joyful feeling of being home for Christmas because my family has so many of the same traditions because the author is my aunt. The story is based on her life and ways of selebrating Christmas. A few months ago my family had to move to a diffrent location. When we were driveing to our new home I held this book in my arms thinking of the fact that when all of this moving was done then finaly my family would be home for Christmas. This book is deffinately worth buying!

My first experience with this book was through a book read aloud given at a writing workshop I recently attended. The teacher reading the book had invited Mrs. Borden to her classroom to read and discuss her writing. The story inspired me to remember some of the special Christmas traditions shared in our family. I'm going to read this book aloud to my class of seventh graders this coming week and ask them to recall some of those special Christmas memories of their own.

Cindy and Penny virtually take you to Europe "on the spot" via their emails sent home. You will hear conversations with Europeans, questions they ask of Americans, and you will be seated at their tables tasting their delicious food. My favorite chapter is Italy, where the girls housesit for 3 wks in a Tuscan villa, gather olives for olive oil, hear Puccini opera in a vineyard, and meet the local Tuscans. The authors paint well their adventures in watercolors and words. If you love travel, real travel, from the ground up-and love to smile at two girls making the "best of it", this book is the real thing!

What an inspirational tale! How many of us have thought of leaving the security of our day-to-day lives to pursue a dream? How many of us have actually had the courage to do it?

Not only is this an inspirational tale of two women giving up their long-term careers and the security of their futures, but it is also a glimpse into the backroads of Europe as seen on a bicycle. The writing is great and the story compelling - five stars for this one!

If you're thinking of changing your life, read this book.

I wouldn't normally read a book like this since the last thing I want to do is sell all my stuff and bike Europe in all manner of weather on $10,000 for one year. But the book is about risk, survival, and transcendence. It's a journal on steriods with great stories full of insight, pathos and humor. Borden and Richardson have a knack for picking out the right detail: Cindy being attacked by a Monkey who wanted her M & M's; learning Dutch after eating dogfood in Belgium; surviving accidents, downpours and steep grades, then returning home to begin new lives, this time doing what they want to do, not what they have to do. Oh yes, and I loved the delicate water colors Cindy painted to capture a whole experience in elegant simplicity. If you want a fun and inspiring read, this is the book.

I thought the book was fun to read and it presented a message that was very worthwhile.

To me the primary message was not whether the story was accurate historically or not, but the 10 basic laws and the organization the author introduced to help understand how any society might be organized to surive a long time.

I understand in the context of the story, that the society of Mu or the Mukulian Empire lasted from 78,000 BC to about 14,000 BC. There is little in written history or archeology that says one way or the other to my knowledge. I accept this account as Dr. Stelle's account of that time period.

The 10 laws are presented as natural laws that are stated individually, but understood as working together with the others. Here is the eighth of the laws in the story, and it might sound very familiar to and be useful to the reader, "No one may intentially kill or injure another person, except in the defense of life or State."

I was totally suprised by the map of Mu at the end, and that the western part of the current United States was a part of that continent to the east of the Rhu Hut Plains.

The story did not go into depth about the spiritual nature of Lord Hiroto and Lord Lithargos. But I had already read "A Dweller on Two Planets" and "An Earth Dweller Returns" so there was no big need to. A first time reader might want to know more about that part.

I understand the next book by Robert Stelle is "Into the Sun." I look forward to reading that next.

I also saw no racist edge in the book whatsoever. I hope I will find a similar book that describes the first society in Africa.

When I was reedin this book I found that the man has a master plan for all of us. There is gonna be alot of probelems if we does not change how we are living. The World needs to be united as a new world order of followers, and people need to learn responsibilllity. The god of this book does not have pitty on the disbelievers, and there is no place for the foolish to become anything good after rebirth. The white men of Mu are the great ones who have the master plan. THey beleive that they are far supperior to the African race. As a black man I am a little disapointed by this, however I do not mind opressing my brothers in the master plan as God will show his light upon me and save me as he is saving the Lemurians. We must recognize that Africa was not the origin of man, and that Mu was. The white man is the great power and my brothers must learn this is true.

or the "young at heart."

I was surprised to find this book on sale through Amazon, since formerly it was only available through the Lemurian Fellowship in San Diego. I became acquainted with this book through another book, The Ultimate Frontier, by Eklal Kueshana a.k.a. Richard Kieninger, which is a companion volume, even though there was some kind of a split between Mr. K. and the Lemurians. Mr. Kieninger later named his intentional community in Illinois, Stelle, after Dr. Robert Stelle, the founder of the Lemurian Fellowship.

Now Sun Rises is by turns very realistic, very fanciful, romantic -- but overall a very appealing book about how civilization was first begun on Earth; take it as fact or fiction, it is well-written and engaging and positive.

(I never had a glimmer of this work as a racist tract, as another reviewer seems to have it here. The town of Stelle never discriminated racially.)

Third-grader Eddie Lewis and the other students at Riverside Elementary School are eagerly preparing for October 10th, when "a real author" will be visiting the school. Eddie likes to both read and write. His teacher encourages him by saying, "We are all authors with important stories inside us." Each child has prepared a question for the author. Eddie's question is: "How do you write books that have parts meant for me?" But during the author's presentation, Eddie doesn't get a chance to ask his question. The author sees him afterward and makes a special effort to talk with him and give him a chance to pose his question in person. Eddie is awed by the experience, and he intends to write about it.

While the identity of "The Author" is kept anonymous throughout the text -- a technique that lends even *more* mystique to the specialness of her appearance -- this book is obviously an autobiographical story for Borden and is based on her own school visits. The narration is told in such a way that the reader's anticipation builds just like it would if we were looking forward to meeting a celebrity ourselves. We've all been there. Even adults become nervous and tongue-tied when faced with speaking to someone they admire and respect. Thus does this book transcend audience level. We can *all* relate to Eddie's situation.

Adam Gustavson's realistic paintings add greatly to the story. They convey freeze-frames of realistic emotion from every character, especially of Eddie and The Author.

This title is certainly useful for preparing elementary students for author visits. Secondarily, it's highly recommended for aspiring writers of *any* age who seek advice from "a real author."

Finally, a book on how to write a research paper, aimed at and written by architects! Other research methods books touch on what subjects to look at, how to go about analyzing information, etc, but rarely do they explain how to do a case study in detail, how to carry your "hypothesis" into your designs, and vise versa. This book should be a required text for anyone pursuing a professional degree in architecture!

I'm a big fan of Edgar Cayce's books because...well, I believe in his material. In one of his books he mentions Phylos, so I bought it and am half way through. Really an excellent, VERY ODD, and quite amazing book that I DO NOT BELIEVE is a fiction. What's important to me is the message which is about LOVE. Won't say more.
As for me, I was an English major in college. Later in life took a great many science classes for pre-med and for 20 years have worked in a hospital...this said to say I'm not a metaphysical nut job. I like my books grounded in love and forgiveness and are very Christ centered (in a good way!). So, if you are curious about this book READ it. You will enjoy it just for it's almost science fiction feeling BUT NOT science fiction feeling....that's all I'll say. Gee, I hope I don't sound like Paula Abdul...

"What goes 'round comes 'round" could be the theme of this enchanting book.
A higher being delivered a message to a young man, F.S.Oliver, who obtained this information by means of "mental talks" during which the boy was conscious of the presence of his instructor. (It was not by "channelling" in which a spirit takes over a human body while the person's consciousness is absent and speaks through it.)
It has been said that truth is stranger than fiction and this story is no exception. It gives a fascinating description of the ancient land of Atlantis as a young man, Phylos, searched for gold and found more adventures than he could handle. His further descriptions of his continued life story illustrate that we are all responsible for our own actions. His heartbreaking decisions became life lessons of pain and ultimate victory.
This book is a page turner and an eye opener to the truth of life. I highly recommend it. One may never see life the same after reading this incredible story.

As easy as 1,2,3, Mr. Borden describes how to speak publicly in a way that pleases the audience and makes your message come through. Everything he writes seem perfectly obvious when you read it, yet I have seen very few speakers practice his rules and I am convinced that the speeches I've heard would have been better if the speakers had tried.

A must for anyone that's about to give a speech, at a wedding or pitching a product. I even try to apply it when I write articles.

I am purchasing additional copies to befriend an individual who has been called on to speak.
