The harsh whispering voice coiled itself around his mind with terrifying power. The words were strange, obscene, brutal words that he hadn't heard in years...

This slim coffee-table-sized book contains a brief bio of the artist and many beautiful plates of his drawings, from sketches to finished works. It is intended as an instruction or inspiration example for the artist or art student, but is worth buying for anyone just to enjoy the beautiful work of Rubens. Many drawings of ladies for which Rubens is famous but also animals like lions and horses, men, faun/satyrs, historical and religious tableau, etc.

How to Play the Harmonica for Fun and Profit

A lot in a small package ... maybe a bit too much
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-30
I received a diatonic harmonica for Christmas, then went looking for a basic book and found this one. To my surprise, in my messing about, I had discovered "tongueing." I hadn't meant to. It just seemed the easiest way to play a clear note. And the other techniques covered in the beginning of this book are pretty much things you'd discover on your own if you were paying attention.

After a bit of hands-on experience, including vibrato, bass accompaniement, and tonal quality, the author delves into music theory, but just a bit, so it's not too scary. That happens at page 53. Follows are twenty pages of songs, then a couple of sections on trick effects such as the chuka, the glass effect, and moaning. All in under 100 pages. Needless to say, the author packs a lot of info in a small space, making this a good starter book.

Where he goes awry is on page 93. He uses the next 12 pages to introduce the 10-hole and then the 12-hole chromatic harmonicas. Seems a bit ambitious to me.

Bottom line: If you you want to learn to play the run-of-the-mill, 10-hole diatonic harmonica, you can't go wrong with this little gem. It will teach you all the basics. The book is dated and the songs are kind of corny, but if you work through them, you'll soon be ready for bigger and better things.

An Excellent Arabian Horse Pedigree Resource
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-01
The Kellogg Arabian Ranch was founded in 1925 and had a strong influence on Arabian horse breeding in North America throughout the 20th century. This book is an excellent resource for people researching the pedigrees of their horses with ancestors tracing to the Kellogg Institute, such as Ga'Zi, Abu Baha, Abu Farwa, and *Raseyn.

There are many photographs throughout the book and individual sections on the prominent horses which include a discussion of their disposition, conformation, athletic ability, and their history. It also includes interesting tidbits such as two of the stallions were 5 gaited and there is a photograph of Rabiyas at the rack.

There are some photographs of the early Crabbet horses such as Skowronek and Indian Magic.

I loved this book and started a journal beacause of it. It is not for everyone surely. If you have trouble with mystical themes this is not the book for you. If you are on a spiritual quest and seeking esoteric answers this book could help fill a void and light a path far less traveled. It's answers are only hinted at and couched in obscure prose at times but if you can accept reincarnation and twin souls this book can be an enlightening and uplifting experience opening you to new trains of thought. For those that like the tried and true and their stories cut and dried this will anger and frustrate you leave it alone. For the mystical dreamer, the spiritual seeker with the heart of a romantic idealist, this is the book you've been looking for. This is not a book for a religious person but an old soul trying to remember it's way back home. It can truely change your life if your a soul in search of answers. Marie Corelli was a true mystic and a visionary psychic she foresaw TV, Atomic Power and X-rays all before their discovery and was a very victorian lady not a scientist but she is an aquired taste. It is a ray of light in a cruel, harsh world. I would recommend this book to any esoterically minded individual with an open mind and willing spirit. ........If you like this title try " Ardath" and " A Romance of Two Worlds " by the same author. Happy Reading!

Excellent - A slice in time of Southern American Politics

I found this book an entirely beleivable representation of American politics. How a very few people use the election system to ensure the results they are desiring. Growing up in the Northeast after the height of the civil rights movement, I found the way that the race issue was handled quite an eye-opener.

pretentious buildings

Rome. The Eternal City. Was there something in its water that Mussolini drank? Painter tells of his maniacal obsession with leaving his mark on this city. With such a storied history, he wanted to add his indelible contributions. So we get a grand tour of Rome. From the 1920s to the present. With black and white photos showing buildings added or altered. Several of which still remain to this day.

There is a comic opera feel to the sheer pretentiousness of Mussolini's activities. He comes off as a bumptious oaf, preferring shallow facades to the reality of a second rate economy.

I have read this story to first graders many times and they loved it. They made puppets and acted out the story. They talked about how everyone has something special about them. It is a very special story.
