Interesting premise, however it is just a collection of lose dissertations that shows the loss to Europe and the gain of the rest of the world with the shift of a hand full of unique people during the Nazi takeover. Much of the information is known. The advantage of this book is that it is in one collection.

This includes:

BACKGROUND AND MIGRATION

Anti-Intellectualism and the Cultural Decapitation of Germany under the Nazis. ALAN BEYRCHEN

THE MUSSES IN AMERICA

"Adaptation and influence"
German Émigrés in Southern California. JARRELL C. JACKMAN

"Transplanting the Arts"
European Writers in Exile. ALFRED KAZN

CULTURAL ADAPTATION IN WORLDWIDE PERSPECTIVE

Das Deutschland: The Anti-Fascist Exile Network in Southern south America. RONALD C. NEWTON

Excellent overview of Mind Expanding Techniques

I bought the book years ago and read it three times. It is a very good overview of the subjects.
The part I like the most is the Self-hynosis part. I have been following the recipes to make my own self-hypnosis tapes over the years. I have had only excellent results.
If record one tape a year (more or less), to accomplish different results, and I use them often until I reach my goals.
I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to reprogram some undesirable patterns of behavior.

Dated rather mundane introduction to hypnosis

This book covers the full spectrum of hypnosis topics, from self-hypnosis to hypnosis for weight loss and behavior modification.

A positive, well written, solid introduction that was for many years the best selling book on hypnosis in America. It is somewhat dated perhaps, having been written in 1977.

This mom hasn't worked at camp

This book is divided into three main sections: one on day camps, one on sleepaway camps, and one on teen tours. The best material is the section on day camps. The rest is mediocre.

As a mom who worked at camp for a few summers, I was surprised to read questions like, "Is there a counselor in the power boat when a camper is water skiing?" Stuff like this is so obvious that it's clear the author never worked at a camp.

The author also claims, "Toilet-papering the girls' (or boys') bunks are harmless tricks that can build unity and comraderie within a group." As the camp I worked at, this could have gotten a kid kicked out.

The IDEAL RESOURCE Book about Camp

I'm so glad that I found this book in time! - it helped me make the best decisions for my kids right before I signed them up for camp this summer. Next year, we'll get started even sooner. This book is top-notch, practical, easy to read, and well structured. You can learn everything - from how to evaluate and choose the best short-term day camp in your own neighborhood, to summer-long, transcontinental teen tours. The author has great suggestions, such as hiring someone to sew on all those nametapes! She also handles emotional issues, such as homesickness, and separation anxiety (for parents as well as kids). The checklists are very useful. But it's not all serious business; I laughed and cried when I read campers' fond remembrances and anecdotes, which kicked off every chapter.

A perfect bedside book, but I spotted one glitch

If you are fascinated by the Borden case (and apparently many of us are) this is an amazing compilation of biographic information about anyone (even prospective jurors who weren't selected for the jury) linked to the murders and trial. You can dip in and find out about 'Me & Brownie', Hyman Lubinsky, and all the rest, written in an entertaining but informative manner.

I nearly fell out of bed when I read that Lizzie's actress 'friend' Nance O'Neil appeared in the movie 'The Titfield Thunderbolt', one of my favourite British comedies. I'm sorry Mr Hoffman but this was Nancy O'Neil, an Australian actress born in 1911.

I sincerely hope this is the only flaw in what appears to be an otherwise meticulously researched book.

Needed Reference Book

When I bought this book, I thought I was buying a history of Fall River, Massachusetts. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it's a reference book, comprised of everyone who was ever involved personally in the Lizzie Borden murder case. Bios are listed alphabetically and I can't think of anyone Mr. Hoffman's left out. I gave this book 4 stars because there are some errors here and there, and more photos of those we don't usually see would have been fantastic. Still, it's a good piece of work and fascinating whether you're looking up a person or if you just want to sit and read it cover to cover. Don't miss it before it becomes unavailable, as many Lizzie Borden books do.

The Advocate is part 2 of Borden Deal's New South Saga (which also includes The Loser and The Winner). Deal's writing style is in many ways like John Grisham--quick paced legal potboiler with modern Southern themes and places. If you like Grisham, you will probably like this novel.

From the back cover: "John Bookman, lusty, backcountry lawyer had returned to the town of his youth after his disasterous defeat in the campaign for Governor. Determined to take up his disrupted law practice and become a successful lawyer, Bookman knows his good looks and physical magnetism are powerful assets in his drive for the top. (...)

Brainwashing and the Cults

An expose on capturing the human mind.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-13
This little book was published in 1977, when "brainwashing" was just coming into public awareness, and the potential of "hypnotism" was reaching its zenith. The topic created feelings of excitement and fear. In addition, there were those who chose to dismiss the entire subject as incredible, and those who formed their own misguided opinions while not bothering to learn anything about it.

The growth of "human potential" cults in the 60s and 70s brought brainwashing to the media, and an industry of "deprogrammers" kidnapped teenagers and young adults from self-styled communities in an attempt to "save" them. The young adults protested the violation of their civil liberties with the help of lawyers provided by their chosen communities. Whether or not they had been brainwashed became impossible to prove in the face of the denial, and who was going to control these vulnerable young people became a matter outside the realm of law. While the issue of brainwashing and mind control could never be proven, it continued to be insinuated in various legal venues and in the media when it might appeal to the emotions of popular culture in support of or against a verdict, i.e. against Charles Manson, in support of Patty Hearst.

This book appeared at a time when the "cults" of the 60s and 70s were at their peak. It is a clear and documented explanation of how and why brainwashing works, its history, its dangers, and its potential benefits. I give it four stars because it is dated, but it is important history nonetheless.

Whatever benefits hypnotism may have can be attested to by, perhaps, the growing market in "self-hypnosis" self-help audiotapes and video cassettes. The dangers, however, at this point in time, have far outweighed the benefits, to the extent that the topic can hardly even be discussed, though never has it been more important. Therapists are so afraid of being accused of "implanting false memories" that hypnotism is not even being used as the tool is could be. Survivors of "mind controlling ritual abuse cults" have no place to go with their memories.

Repeatedly, in several places, the author clearly indicates that "brainwashing has come to America." It is a call to reality, a demand to come to terms with what this means for our people, and our future.

At a time when schools and workplaces are no longer safe havens from suicidal mass murderers who never see a trial, when an unexplainable event like 9-11 leaves us, in terror, believing anything the mass media tells us about it and willing to do anything suggested in response, it is crucial to understand the phenomena of mass hypnosis and the dynamics of mind control. It is the only way we will ever be able to begin to see clearly how we are being manipulated.

This book is out of print. I am not selling mine. However, I see there is one used available. I would grab it, if I were you.
