Curious George fans of all ages should love this warm-hearted book about his creators and how they narrowly escaped (and rescued George!) from the Nazis coming into Paris. Their story reveals two people of great creativity, tenacity, and humor--and courage, too. This truly delightful book is packed with information and a compelling, well-researched story, cleverly written in a style similar to the original "George" books. The illustrations are fanciful and vibrant, but the pages are also enhanced by H.A. Rey's own drawings, Margret Rey's photography, and pictures of their personal ephemera in a wonderful scrapbook style. It really is a fascinating history that made me love and appreciate George all the more. It is sophisticated enough for adult readers, but approachable enough to share with grade-school children... and might prove a gentle way to introduce children to the history surrounding World War II. For any monkey still blessed to be young at heart, this is a book worth owning and sharing.

This book is one of the most intersting books that i have ever read in my intire life! you will find many marvolous things about CG including that his real name is FIFI! (wich is french for curious) This book will always remain in my bedroom for as long as i live!!!! Very intersting storys about history and that time period! many intersting facts such as, you can always find a redheaded lady in CG books, because that redhead is his wife and she is always walking thier dog in the books, who they also took everywhere with them in real life.

I enjoyed reading it and was surprised at all they went through.

I found the section on agreements for Publishing, Collaboration, and Licensing especially helpful. I did not realize that each book also comes with a CD-ROM containing sample forms and contracts-an extra added bonus that makes this book an invaluable resource all writers, new and experienced, should invest in. Highly recommended.

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Tonya Marie Evans at the Book Expo of America in Washington DC this year and she is a smart, enthusiastic, driven woman. This book should be required reading for anyone wishing or thinking about writing and publishing a book. This book will help you understand the process in plain english. This book clearly explains complicated legal issues, offers examples and answers your questions. This is a book you will want to keep on your desk and refer back to again and again. I recommend this to each person who sends me a book to review or asks me any type of publishing question.

Literary Law Guide for Authors is my 'gold medal'. I treasure this well-written and VERY easy-to-read book! I've written (self-published) a children's book and currently writing a spiritual anthology. In both cases, I desperately needed contract forms and from searching the internet and communicating briefly with the author, I ordered this book. The forms section (in addition to the CD) included every bit of information I needed to create and provide a professional looking contract. I just can't say enough of this book. TIMELY. WELL-WRITTEN. Insightful and Effective would be the best two words to describe the advantages of this book. This book lays out literary law in a non-complex way that is very easy to grasp. Dangerous publishing coups could be avoided by implementing all of the book's stratagies when applicable. The details about electronic rights has really enabled me to see the full value of my children's books. Since reading the book, I surveyed many author friends of mine who unbeknownst to them, had signed away valuable electronic rights that their publisher stand to make a bundle on. Also, being told the vast difference between copyrights and trademarks saved me a lot of money that I would have spent needelessly on protecting my products when in fact I had already taken the proper steps. This book takes the paranoia out of negotiating with publishers and has taught me the precious lesson of knowing that everything is truly negotiable, especially when it's your property at stake. I tell everyone I meet about this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I think it does a wonderful job of describing the law and legal issues that an author should know about if they are going to take full advantage of their work product. Knowing the information contained in this book will most assuredly help a small business owner who creates publications to market her company and/or to provide herself with credibility. Definitely a must read for any infopreneur, too!

Interestingly the subject matter included in this book is fairly simple on the grand scheme of things regarding the law. I don't remember a course at either of my law schools that focused on this material. There certainly was a course on Intellectual Property, but that subject is larger than what this book covers. That course covers the real meat of intellectual property: Patent Law. Authors don't need to concern themselves with that subject.

My favorite parts of the book were chapters 2 (Copyright), 4 (Fair Use & Permissions), 7 (Trademark), and 10 (A Brief History of Intellectual Property). I'm glad chapters 3, 8, and 12-14 were included, too. Those talked about how to apply for IP protection with the US Copyright and US Trademark offices, as well as basics about the law of contracts and agreements.

I also enjoyed poking around the Net to learn a bit about the author. I only did this because of the way the author wrote her book. She included herself as part of the book's content. She is a somewhat young attorney who has an athletic background and clearly a drive to be a successful entrepreneur. The world would be a better place if there were more women like her.

I would have enjoyed the book more if it had not been ALL law. For example, while it is true that an author gets substantial protection from registering her copyright so she can sue and get damages. Most writings don't merit filing for such protection. I think it should have been pointed out that some writings don't really need the full range of protection, while others certainly do. If I write a 10-page ebook that helps me market my Web site. Do I really care if someone steals that from me? Probably not. But if I write a 170-page booklet that I sell at my seminars and workshops, then I better register my copyright because some real effort went into that publication and my seminars need it for credibility. I'd be at a loss if someone stole it. Things like this could have been included in the instant book being reviewed to make it better. 5 stars!

This is an exceptionally well written book which serves as an excellent resource for those seeking recovery or for anyone trying to better understand what it's like to battle an eating disorder.

Biting the Hand that Starves You is a very special book that it likely to change the way you view eating disorders. It contains many first hand accounts of women's struggles to free themselves from the ways bulimia and anorexia control their lives. And it maps out the nature of this control, which is beyond the attempt to control food and weight--it's tied to societial messages about how women should behave (take care of others, be nice to everyone, perform well in many arenas, etc.). The book is primarily written for therapists but will be helpful to others affected by bulimia and anorexia.

This is just an awesome book. As a recovering anorexic, i have found this book not only hopeful and inspiring, but helpful and fascinating. It has made me think of my eating disorder in a whole new way. Instead of talking about afflicted people as "sick," it refers to "insiders" and discusses a way of thinking where one views their disorder as separate from themself, rather than who they are. It's fascinating and i highly reccommend it for people suffering from an eating disorder, those who are recovered, friends and family of sufferers, and just anyone who has an interest. great!

As someone who has struggled with anorexia for over half my life, I have often found myself reading anything on anorexia I could lay my hands on; desperately searching for the reassurance that comes from knowing one is not alone in one's experiences, as well as for some elusive insight that might assist me in resisting anorexia's stranglehold over my life. Yet frequently I have come away from such reading feeling dissatisfied and disheartened. Not so with 'Biting the Hand that Starves You'; in this book I found so much of what I had been searching for and a whole lot more.

While the authors are not the first professionals to draw on `insider knowledges' (the knowledges of people with first-hand experiences of anorexia/bulimia), the prominence and the respect accorded to such knowledges is unprecedented. The result is a book that speaks compellingly of anorexia/bulimia, and crucially, does so in a manner that is never patronising, pathologising or didactical.

Providing exciting new ways of thinking and speaking about anorexia/bulimia, the book engenders a sense of hope - a 'commodity' that is often desperately lacking, yet so vital when it comes to resisting anorexia/bulimia.

I highly recommend the book to all readers, from those struggling with anorexia/bulimia, to their family and friends, and health professionals.

I only wish that Rick, David, and Ali had written this book years ago! Because Biting the Hand that Starves You would have been an incredible source of information, motivation, and hope when I was desperately struggling in the depths of my eating disorder.

I was thrilled to see that the book vividly illustrates the vicious dialogue that occurs between the eating disorder and the individual who suffers with it. Throughout my recovery, psychotherapist and author Thom Rutledge encouraged me to practice this very dialogue between my true self (Jenni) and my eating disorder (`Ed') over and over again, which was crucial to my finding the amazing freedom I experience today.

Biting the Hand that Starves You includes many uplifting, inspirational personal accounts that reveal people can and do beat anorexia/bulimia! Within the book, the authors compassionately share how you can really make practical steps to join the ranks of those who already walk that path of independence.

Mrs. K is a wonderful teacher -- caring, warm, and energetic. She inspires her students by treating them as individuals and by making her classroom very interactive. Her students become "teachers" themselves when Mrs. K is in the hospital. Although Mrs. K's illness is discussed, it is not frightening for children. I hope all teachers will take time to read this book and share it with their classes.

I revelled in the charming illustrations. Gustavson has managed to create a clever, believable, and thoroughly entertaining world that could only be accomplished with a deft hand and and a sharp, thoughtful mind.

Okay, so I'm biased. The illustrator is a dear friend. However, I can express without lying that it is one of the most beautifully illustrated children's books I've seen. The story takes on a "not so scary" view for children of illness. Miss Borden has written a learning tool which helps to exclude fear and sadness, and allows us to look toward survival.

Mrs. K encapsules what we envision our favorite teacher to have been like. She motivates learning by incorporating amusing tactics, such as dancing, to teach subjects on a different level. Her courage through her illness leaves her students always remembering the stronger side of Mrs. K and everything she taught them in Room 3, even making them teachers to one another. Children & adults alike will love Good Luck, Mrs. K!!

When I first read this book (silently to myself), I thought it was okay. The very first time I shared it with a class (4th grade), the book came to life. What a powerful story of learning and living. A student reported to me today that she repeated "KEMP-CHIN-SKI" on the soccer field and her team scored soon after. Oh, the great, far-reaching power of a wonderful, affecting book.

The Longest Cave is a book which will hold you spellbound and wishing it would never end! Roger Brucker and "Red" Watson were young men 50 years ago when they first toured what was then known as Floyd Collin's Crystal Cave. This book is the story of how they and so many others dedicated days, months and years to seek out new passageways deep underground. In the case of Roger and Red, they dedicated decades and continue to work to preserve the very fragile cave environment.

This book has everything that you would want not only in a book but in a feature blockbuster movie! Adventure, Suspense, Humor, Friendship, Excitement, Discovery, Danger, and around every corner lurks the Unknown which would leave any movie-goer on the edge of their seat! All this without the gore and crime which seems to be the standard in so many books and movies today.

I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone of any age!!! What makes this even more amazing is that this is a true story.

What these men and women accomplished is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest in the DARK and without ever having seen a map of it! This is the American Dream of hard work, dedication, comraderie, and perseverance.

We have movies of Everest and Space Exploration and I look forward to the movie based on this book!
Without a doubt "The Longest Cave" will far surpass any movie on the above-mentioned topics.

This book is the best book I've ever came across! Outstanding adventure of how the World's Largest Cave System ever came about. The discoveries in this book are amazing! Suspence to the fullest! The people in this book who made this discovery should be noted as the best exploration team of all time! I can only amagine the feeling they got knowing they had made the biggest connection in cave history to this day. It would be almost impossible for anyone else to top the discovery in this book. An amazing adventure!! I couldn't stop reading this book over and over. The authors of this book should give the story to Hollywood to make into a motion picture. I could imagine this story making the best adventure movie of all time. Ron Howard or Steven Speilburg should be given a copy of this book! It would be a hit! I wish I had the full video tape of this expidition. National Geographic's short segment in "Mysteries Underground" was a tease. If anyone knows where or if there is such a tape, please post it! This is a must read if you like adventure to the fullest!

If you like adventure, if you like caves, if you like drama and suspense, or if you breath in and out regularly and have a pulse, you really ought to read this book. The story of the years it took to connect the Flint Ridge/Mammoth cave systems, it sweeps the reader into the wonderfully obsessive world of the Flint Ridge Cavers. A great book. Strongly reccomended.

I bought this book about 15 years ago while visiting Mammoth Cave National Park. I still enjoy rereading it from time to time. It is the sort of book one hates to see end.

The book narrates the history of the discovery that Kentucky's Flint Ridge-Mammoth Cave system of caves is by far the world's longest known series of continuously-connected caverns. The writers and their many cohorts are not only daring adventurers, but a collection of cavers who deeply appreciate the mystery, beauty and science of caves.

A very interesting part of the book is the well-developed character sketches of the many explorers, a good number of whom participated in parts of the long, arduous struggle to discover the connections between five different large caves so as to make them one.

The overriding star of the show is the cave system itself, and the book contains many facinating portions about the beauty, danger, wonder, and history of the things found there by explorers dating back to prehistoric Native Americans, forward.

After a frustrating series of events, including an initial startling lack of interest/resistance by National Park personnel, progress begins to be made in leaps and bounds. When the Ohio cavers find that the Flint Ridge system is the longest then know, an effort is taken up to connect it with Mammoth Cave.

In a spine-tingling narrative about going past the "Tight Spot", a very small passage, the cavers eventually make the connection by going down in Flint Ridge and emerging in a well-known Mammoth Cave tourist gallery. The sense of truiumph and relief is overwhelming and excellently captured.

My size and age prohibit me from doing the things described in this book, and I have never done them. But I was captivated from start to finish by the story of these brave, resourceful people and the cave system they explored and charted. It is as if I am there myself.

My only quibble is that the photographs are limited and in black and white, but the excellent descriptive writing overcomes this factor. I love the book. Very, very highly recommended.

Caves have been intertwined with Kentucky history since a man named Houchins chased a bear into Mammoth cave in the late 1700s. Later on, the valley north of Mammoth Cave was named after this early settler, and the ridge north of Houchins' Valley was called Flint Ridge. Starting in the early 1950s a group of cavers began a lifelong ambition of connecting the caves on the northern ridge (Flint Ridge) to the caves on the southern ridge (Mammoth Cave Ridge). Their goal was simple: To map the Longest Cave. This book covers that time. Along with 'The Caves Beyond' and 'Trapped', this book constitutes an informal trilogy about Mammoth Cave. It is a story of determination over hardship, of perseverence over fatigue, of triumph over nature. Roger Brucker and Red Watson write this book with the confidence of people that were there. From the very beginning, their influence on the project helped mold it into what it was to become. We see them age, from young men in their ealry twenties, to grizzled Flint Ridge veterans to seeing their children caving alongside them. There is a real sense of the passage of time here; people come, people go, the cave is eternal. Fiction should hope to be so true. Dominating all this is the cave. It is all pervading. Over three hundred miles of passage lies under their feet, and the reader fells as if he is crawling, climbing and squirming along with them. We feel the explorer's chill they wade through Hanson's Lost River, we feel their pain as they crawl through Agony Avenue. We satand alongside them as they are awed by the vastness and remoteness of Unknown Cave. Above all else, it is the story of the people who explore the cave. For fourty years, cavers have been gathering in Central Kentucky to explore this cave. To mankind, the cave is eternal. We may choos to protect it, we may, in our ignorance deface it. Either way, we live our lives by interacting with it. Or to put it in the books words: "That is where life is, that is where your friends are".

True reflection of the over representation of Mexiccan Americans in combat. A shame movies, tv shows, etc. never portray this.

This book tells the story of Mexican-American soldiers who gave their lives for their country in WWII and Vietnam. (Many fought in Korea too.) A large number were awarded the Cogressional Medal of Honor.

Unfortunately their contributions have been purged from popular movies and current best selling books about Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.

This book is long overdue.

This book really helped me not only understand, but also deal with sibling rivalry. The author offers good solutions for overcoming what can be a devisive issue in many homes. I have put what I learned from this book into practice and believe that is has made a positive difference in our family dynamics.

This book offered very helpful practical advice, with a welcome touch of humor, on daily life with squabbling kids. The author's tips and tricks for ending the inevitable fights over sharing rooms, celebrating a sibling's birthday, and resolving holiday hassles, get right to the heart of the problem. Best of all, the solutions she offers work! Ms. Borden also tackles serious topics such as academic competition among siblings, blended families, and the difficulties faced by a sibling who has a brother or sister with a chronic illness or disability. In all cases, she presents families with options that they can adapt to their needs.

With three sons who are incapable of keeping their hands off one another, Ms. Borden's book has been a godsend. Helping me to understand when and when not to get involved and realizing that the rivalry does indeed teach them many lessons has been most valuable. Ms. Borden's style of writing is both informative and extremely enjoyable. A must for anyone with more than one child!!

As the part-time working mother of two very active and competitive sons, I found Borden's advice very wise and helpful, as well as entertaining. Her scenarios and suggestions are right on the mark. All parents have problems dealing with sibling rivalry, and it's important to admit it. It won't just "go away;" what you learn here is how to deal with it.

For example - if your kids (like mine) are close in age, and the same sex, it's important to teach them to "fight fair." It's also important not to get overly involved with the details of their arguments, and not to become hostile yourself (which is understandable... if it's 6 PM and you haven't started dinner yet!) Borden says kids whose parents are overly critical and argumentative will imitate their behavior, rather than try to do better.

I came away from this book with new ideas and tips, as well as a personal pat on the back for things I've been doing well all along. I also loved the little sidebars written in the margins, which were a refreshing mix of old and new information.

I found the book easy to read and understand. I have applied some of the things I read in the book and found them useful and I feel over time the new approach to bowling will improve to my good.

The book gives a comphrehensive overview of this incredibly popular sport. The writers have laid out a step by step mental
plan of action that accounts for most contigencies and can used when someone has to psychologically prepare
onself to perform at a high level.

The use of acronyms such as RALLY ( react, accept, learn, lean, yes )and the examples
of positive self talk particularly useful.

I think this is one of the most up to date and detailed bowling books to date. It dives into the mental game aspect of the game and just helps you with the skills that most bowlers will need to take their game to the next level.

Very in depth book on all facets of bowling not just the psychologoical aspects. Has good drills and if the drills are performed, your average will go up.

When ever you buy a book containing psychology, you think to say "I knew that!", but this book pinpoints the essens of bowling psychology. I've focused on several things that for sure will make me a better bowler.

Kley used his artistic ability to bring to life his unique form of satiric wit and whimsey. Pages magically come alive with his pen and ink social commentaries. The two sketch books published in this volume will bring a smile to your face and an admiration for his work.

The fact that Heinrich Kley isn't better known demonstrates the flaw in the idea that "history will sort out the great work." Kley is quite simply one of the best and most imaginative draftsmen in the Western tradition, and he is never mentioned in the standard histories of art. (I discovered him in Harvey Kurtzman's HELP! magazine in the early Sixties.) This constitutes a coup (one of many) for Dover Publications, who specialize in the dissemination of classics (famous and forgotten) in well-made, affordable editions. Anyone who cares at all about drawing should pick up this book.

What an eye opener, what a fantastic, comical and totally genuine talent was Kley. Puts our contemporary "mark Maker" graduates of university art programs to shame. This guy did it all out of his head out of connsumate knowledge of anatomy and character. His skill with the plastic form in space is delightful to behold.

Heinrich Kley, an expressionist know for his work with pen and ink sketches, mostly of the black and white variety, is someone undeservedly without oceans of renown despite the fact that many of his works appear around us daily. He did have his proverbial "day in the sun," gaining notoriety for his satirical approach to world at large, but that seems to have ebbed off since his death in the 1940s and many have forgotten who this is. Well, this book is a wonderful showpiece of his works, containing two of his sketchbooks that many people have seen plenty of times but might not recognize by name, helping to revitalize the memory. Many of these works still have a lot of social merit today, taking shots at bureaucracy, militarism, and other satirical facets that we still find ourselves plagued with.

I found myself attracted to this artist because of his strangely dark overtures showpieced in this volume, with snails consuming people and giants stomping villages full of what they deem their inferiors, plus its takes on industrialism and religion. Presented with an introduction that explains the life of the artist, this editions, actually two books brought together for one showing, has a total of 200 illustrations spanning 125 + pages and makes it an excellent deal. Still, if your easily offended perhaps theme presentation will most deservedly offend you and you might want to pass on it. If you like dark humor that has deep seeded, often missed, meanings, however, you'll love Kley.

Well, this confirms what savvy teens and their parents already know - Middle School is NOT too early to start thinking about college. That's where a lot of the ground work is laid - because that's where smart kids get on track taking the right math and science courses (which you can't get into later on if you lack the prerequisiste course from the year before), begin or expand their foreign language studies, and start taking meaningful electives such as art, drama, and architectural drawing.

Borden talks about the Early Decision dilemmas that have been in the news recently. She also gives the inside scoop on standardized testing (also in the news a lot.) She offers sensible guidelines for visiting colleges, determining where to apply, and various kinds of financial aid that might be available for you. And she tells you why every college applicant should take SAT prep courses.

This book helps you focus on the details you can control, and let go of the rest. If you start early (and "early" is a key word) you can significantly improve your chances of getting into the college of your choice.

Throughout the book, Borden gives you the facts, and then zeroes in on the "Bottom Line" - what, exactly, do you need to know about this or that. Her book is easy to read and understand. The set up is also easy to follow.

What an incredibly complete guide to the college application process! Marian Borden has thoroughly researched this increasingly complex journey and made wonderful suggestions on subjects as varied as high school course selection, standardized test-taking, summertime and extra-curricular activities, and the college search and application process. She has also included a very complete chapter for the student-athlete hoping to play college level sports. She has answered so many questions so completely under one cover - a MUST for families of college-bound middle and high schoolers!

If this book or one like had been available when I was moping around in the eighth grade, I would have been ... well, I would have had a much easier time with college. Marian Borden has written a readable, fact and tip filled, entertaining book aimed at kids in middle school (though she makes in clear that parents are more than welcome). She demystifies and organizes a process that has grown amazingly complicated and difficult, and she makes it fun. In fact, she shows how kids can increase their enjoyment of those years while building a solid record of accomplishment and depth that will make them interesting to college admissions types. The message of KickStart to College goes way beyond admissions, however, and provides strategies and actions that will help kids make the most of their college experience. It's indeed too bad I didn't have it when I needed it, but I'm glad the book is here for my niece.

I bought this book for my daughter, who is starting 8th grade in September. I don't want her to panic in a few years and realize she didn't plan ahead for doing other things in 10th and 11th grade besides applying to college -- and worrying because she didn't have a plan in middle school! Even the kids who you would think would have no problem getting into the colleges of their choice aren't -- things are so competitive these days. With two children in Ivy League colleges, I thought I was an expert about college admissions, but this book proved me wrong. I picked it up because I have an eighth grader who wants to follow in her siblings' footsteps; I realize the college admissions game is constantly evolving. This book inspires organization and offers realistic advice without scaring the reader or over-dramatizing the process. I was also very impressed with the research about standardized testing, early admissions, and college visits.
