Destiny Denied is a scriptural and historical chronicle of women's lives down through the ages. I give it an excellent rating because it is not Christian pablum--it provides in-depth meat the reader can chew on in successive readings. The truths within the book are substantiated and referenced by theologians, biblical scholars, ministry leaders and historians.
Dr. Wooten explores the Genesis account of the creation and fall of humankind. She examines the ramifications of the fall and its negative impact on women by going back to the Hebrew-Greek. The mistreatment of women down through the centuries, even today, is evaluated thoroughly. Women in Third World countries, as well as women in many Christian denominations (to a lesser degree) are feeling the residuals of not being able to fulfill their destinies.

Tight Little Studio

This is a fascinating book. If you only know Ealing Studios for comedies such as "Kind Hearts and Coronets" "The Lavender Hill Mob" and "The Ladykillers," this book opens up the whole Ealing output from about 1939 to 1957.

Not only does Barr discuss the classic Ealing comedies, but he puts them in their context in the studio's output, and he shows how the studio's output changed over time regarding the pressures and changes that British society went through in those pivotal decades.

This book is "the rise and fall of Ealing Studios" but in an artistic, not financial, sense. It gets one to think about what movies say about "national character" yet remains enjoyable and jargon-free.

A lesson in what it means to be a part of a team
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-19
Bud Walker is a second baseman who is the best pivot man on the double play. However, even though he has all the skills to play the position for the major league Blue Sox, he has remained in the minor leagues for several years. Finally, it appears that he will be given his chance. Unfortunately, the Blue Sox sign a flashy second baseman named Devlin to a huge bonus. Walker is anything but flashy, so Devlin becomes an immediate crowd favorite. The other members of the Blue Sox think otherwise, Devlin is so obnoxious and full of himself that he creates a great deal of dissension on the team.
While Devlin is playing second, the Blue Sox languish in the second division. However, Devlin is injured in a collision and Walker takes over at second. The Blue Sox begin winning and reach a tie for first. However, the fans begin screaming for Devlin, booing everyone on the team, including manager Jughead Slavin. Charlie K. O'Neill is the president of the entire Blue Sox system and is steadfast in his belief that Devlin should play second base, even though he is not a team player and is despised by everyone else on the team. Eventually, at the point where Walker is about to be sent to the minor leagues for the last time, his teammates confront O'Neill and threaten not to play if Devlin is selected over Walker. O'Neill backs down and Walker gets his chance, which he immediately takes advantage of.
This is a story about perseverance, hustle and team play, where success is measured by how well your team does rather than how much you excite the crowd. Like all good stories with a moral, the good guy wins in the end, overcoming the odds and reaching a high level of success. It is also about the value of friendship and togetherness, when the Blue Sox players stand up for Walker, he learns what friendship and commitment to a joint goal really means.

Five Stars for Mothers
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-28
I am the author of this book, which is written to honor and to edify mothers regarding their true worth. While feminists disavow the essentiality of motherhood, I see motherhood as the sum and substance of human reality. My book draws from academic studies, from science and math to women's studies, but regardless of the amount of formal schooling one has endured, any mother will easily relate to my message, which couldn't be more lucid: motherhood is It, what every religion idealizes but oddly enough in the form of fatherhood. I make clear how this switcheroo has come to pass, and suggest how mothers might now reevaluate what they're doing and still adore their men folk. I especially recommend the essays on Romance, Consciousness, and The Madonna.

I thought it was great. 1st person Prentiss N. Gray wrote daily of his trips in Canada , Alaska and the lower 48. My favorite was his British Columbia hunts/explorations between the Peace and Fraser rivers as the title of the book sugests. He took his Wife and 2 kids on hunts as well and documents thier success and failures. Well written and how it was in the 1920-1930's PHOTOGRAPHS WERE FANTASTIC and lots of them almost 1 full page original photo of Prentiss' for every 2 pages. The Scores of photos are worth many thousands of words and the book would be worth it for the photos by themselves. The wilds of B.C., Alberta, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, etc makes you want to go there

Serious gardeners need many kind of books, but one of the very first everyone should have is Elsa Bakalar's "A Garden of One's Own." She demystifies gardening so that a newcomer such as myself learns quickly how to do the many tasks that other books consider too rudimentary to explain. Her obvious talent for teaching is invaluable, and having her book at your side is almost as good as having a gardening tutor next to you. I refer to it often, and recommend it to anyone who gardens.
