Communication Promotes Better Marriages and Families.

Marriage is the most important of our life shaping decisions. "My 101 Favorite Marriage Myths" should be required reading for both the bride and the groom before receiving a Marriage License.

It would be best if Dr Pat Boone's book was read and discussed before marriage, however since it was only published this Spring that may not have been possible.

When you send a copy of "My 101 Favorite Marriage Myths" to that "special couple" in your life, it may well be the most significant gift they will ever receive.

Should be considered mandatory reading for anyone contemplating matrimony

My One-Hundred And One Favorite Marriage Myths by Pat MacDonald Boone is a highly recommended and beautifully illustrated approach to demystifying marriage. Dr. Boone uses humor, cartoons, questions, suggestions, and solutions through a thoroughly "reader friendly" narrative in addresses such commonly misleading ideas as marriage being a 50/50 proposition between husband and wife, being a married couple means losing individual identity, love is logical, only one of you needs to understand finances, having children will keep the marriage together, dysfunctional husbands and wives should stay together for the sake of their children, and so many more illusions, misunderstandings, naiveties, and fairytales about married life. My One-Hundred And One Favorite Marriage Myths should be considered mandatory reading for anyone contemplating matrimony -- or a divorce!

We picked up a copy of this book last month for us to use on a weekend away in the wine country. Now we have bought several more for gifts to give for Christmas, and our copy sits on our coffee table at home. The author has captured all I needed to know about Napa and Sonoma, wihtout getting to bogged down in details/history. There are recommendations on where to eat, sleep, things to do, the history of the wine industry, how wine is made, and stunning pictures. With 15 minutes you can get so much info you wish there were more coffee table books with this much substance and this well written, with up to date info, but not skimping on the glorious photos.

Excellent introduction to Napa Valley/Sonoma - wine country!

This is an excellent overview of the heart of California wine country, Napa Valley & Sonoma. Loaded with lush photography and insight into the tradition of winemaking, the author takes another leap and provides you with fine dining and lodging selections in the areas as well. I especially liked the pictures of all of the labels and listings at the end of the book of all of the wineries from this area. This allows you to date and check off when you sampled that particular bottle as well as motivate the pursuit to sample all that these wineries have to offer. If you are planning a vacation to Napa or Sonoma, this is a must have.

Good bio of a frontiersman

Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone, was a prominent person in early 19th century Missouri. Following in the footsteps of his father he took up residence on the frontier and made a hazardous living as a trapper, long hunter, surveyor and soldier. He became a militia captain in the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk war of 1832 and participated in early U.S. army explorations of the Great Plains. His life was interesting and exciting and moderately important.

The author has turned out a well-written and researched scholarly biography of Boone. I was impressed with his ability to make Boone and his family come alive and to string together a coherent narrative from many sources. The book is an significant contribution to the history of the American frontier, especially for its insights about White relations with Indian tribes such as the Osage, Potawatomi, Sauk, Wichita, and Cherokee. Boone was a competent, unspectacular exemplar of the American frontiersman on the Middle Border.

Those with an interest in the frontier history of Missouri and nearby states, especially the uneasy relationships between Whites and Indians will find this book worth reading.

The Original Son of the Pioneer

Review Date: 2003-12-20
While Daniel Boone has become an icon of the American frontier experience and a celebrated pathmarker of America's westward movement, in this informative and entertaining book R. Douglas Hurt makes the case that Boone's youngest son, Nathan, deserves a place there as well. Born in Kentucky in 1781, Nathan Boone learned the skills of the hunter and woodsman from his father and developed both an affinity and an aptitude for the environment very early. He continued his father's wanderlust by moving westward to Missouri as a young man and remaining on the outposts of the United States throughout his life. In so doing, he earned a livelihood as a hunter, trapper, guide, surveyor, and military officer.

The central feature of Nathan Boone's life, and the core of this biography, was his military service. During the War of 1812 he led a company of rangers on campaigns in the Old Northwest. In 1832, at the age of 51, he organized his own company of Missouri Rangers for the Black Hawk War. This time, at the end of the conflict Nathan Boone transferred to the regular army's dragoons at Fort Leavenworth. He remained on active duty from 1833 until forced to take a final leave of absence in 1848. He maintained his commission, even if not on active duty, until 1853 when health finally prompted his resignation. Serving under Stephen Watts Kearny on the Iowa, Kansas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma frontier suited Boone just fine. He also acquitted himself well as a captain in the dragoons and was called upon to lead several expeditions during his active service to patrol the region. He did not, however, accompany Kearny's Army of the West in its invasion of New Mexico and California in 1846, remaining behind on garrison duty in Oklahoma.

This is a straightforward and competent biography. Capably researched and written, it rescues from nearly complete obscurity a figure of moderate significance in the American West in the mid-nineteenth century. Proceeding chronologically, it also excels at describing the role of the army on the frontier in those periods when war was not taking place. As such it is a welcome addition to the historical literature. It is also a worthwhile addition to the "Missouri Biography Series" in which it appears.

Very few books are written, which deal with the loss of Adult Children. I found this book to be a godsend. Even though it has been 5 years since the death of my son, this book filled me with the realization that I am normal, and that everything I have experienced and probably will in the future, I share with all these women who allowed themselves to be interviewed. I only hope they do a sequel or a follow-up.

Effective in learning how to be a Great Leader
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-07
This book was excellent. The one really important aspect of this book that I enjoyed the most was the easy to read and understand format, but also that he stressed his points using many life experiences of his own. I find that when a real life experience is used to enforce a point that I am able to remember the point that much easier. I did not just learn how to be an effective leader, but I also learned how to deal with situations of my life that do not necessarily apply to leadership such as stress and healthy living.
Another important that Manske Jr. did was to use quotations from people who are important AND unimportant in order to show greatness. He also showed his points through use of very important people such as Presidents and Owners of companies. When I started reading the book, I had not realized how complicated being a leader was, I never really thought about it, and even though he acknowledges that leading is not an easy task, he makes it seem as though if anyone put their mind to it, they can be a leader. For instance I had never thought that courage is important in leading others. And although I knew it in the back of my mind, I did not think about how one has to deal with the fact that they will not win all of their people over, some may dislike them.
One final aspect that I liked was the fact that he can speak from experience as anyone who reads this book will know, for he has experienced many instances on learning how to lead. He did not act like he was a leader from the beginning or that he was a perfect leader. He stressed that leaders make mistakes, all people do, but to learn from them is key to leading effectively.
There are two negatives that I find in this book. The first one being that he does not offer how to deal with people who dislike you just because they do. I found that this would be very helpful to people who yearn to lead, but do not know how to deal with these people. The only other negative thing I find, is that Manske Jr. stresses Christianity. I found this as wrong because there are many people in the world who have different religions and many do not believe in god. Although this was negative I find that stressing a higher power was important, because we are not the highest power in the world.

Excellent read, I would recommend this book to anyone even if they do not want to lead, because it will help you deal with a leader as well in a more positive way.

An exceptional Art History book

M. Elizabeth Boone has written a book that was surely needed. Although art scholars have paid much attention to American artists who painted in France, it was difficult before this beautiful book to find a history of Americans who painted in Spain. Its color plates are exceptional, and Boone writes about Spain's important influence on the best historic American artists. It is a "must" for anyone who is interested in the confluence of Spanish artistic traditions on America.

A Journey We Have Longed to Take

Review Date: 2008-06-02
Follow artists from the United States who spent time traveling and painting in Spain? This seemed like a great idea, and the narrative by M. Elizabeth Boone more than fulfils its initial promise. In fact, her book combines an educational journey with entertaining adventure.

Beginning with Washington Irving, this book brings literature and music into the discussion of American art and the Iberian Peninsula, providing a context that allows readers to feel the experiences of the travelers. Nineteenth-century Spain comes alive on the pages in a manner that prepares readers--I should really say participants--for the book's transition into the turn of the century.

Most of all, Vistas de Espana: American Views of Art and Life in Spain, 1860-1914 continually offers surprises by avoiding predictable outcomes and easy conclusions. The narrative maintains momentum as it makes one yearn to keep turning pages in order to find out what happens next. And all of this comes in addition to a huge assortment of sumptuous visual offerings.

I love Hawkes' writing. His An Irish Eye and the Blood Oranges are very good as well. Somehow he infuses a vbrant life into even his darker, stranger stories so that everything seems alive and full of light even while twisting in agony. Describing his writing is difficult as his style is unique. He was one of the top American writers of all time.

Whistlejacket is a fun read just for some of the short descriptive scenes and the subtelty with which Hawkes laces the interactions between his characters.

Oh, if you dislike horses, this book is not for you.

Hawkes sure can write.

Man he's good. A friend of mine, or rather an acquaintence at this point, had Hawkes for a lecturer in school. And he was described to me as this geeky college prof and nothing out of the ordinary. I read a few of his earlier books (The 'Blood Oranges', 'Second Skin', and 'The Lime Twig') and it amazed me that this dude could make my skin crawl like that. I picked up 'Whistlejacket' and thought 'well this guys aged some I bet he's mellowed a little bit'. At first I thought I was right but it's more like Nolan Ryan's later years on the mound. Hawkes still delivers. He's just learned all the tricks and lures the the reader into an unwarranted sense of security. Later that old sick stomach comes back to haunt you.

I have to agree with the first reviewer. My 11 year old is a reluctant reader, and he was totally engaged by this book. (My 8 year old advanced, voracious reader loved it,too!) It was just very accessible in the way it was written, and the friendly black and white illustrations on many of the pages create an inviting appearance. There are timelines of Boone's life and concurrent world history in the back, which I appreciate as a home educator. I will definitely be checking out some of the other biographies in this series.

Great for reluctant readers!

I can't remember now how I first became acquainted with this book - but it must have been more than 20 years ago when I first read it and it has remained one of my favorites. J. Allen Boone's unfailing good spirits, his enthusiasm for life, and his excitement about adventures - both physical and mental - are an inspiration. I was going to call him an optimist - but "optimist" doesn't really go deep enough. Boone was absolutely fearless. He was also a wonderful humorist, and I suppose it's his humor in the book that first drew me into it. I highly recommend this book, as well as his book, Kinship With All Life.
