Sparkles with verve and witReview Date: 2000-03-12
There has been a lot of interest recently in the Peninsular War - and it seems the laconic and witty officers of the 95th (later the Rifle Bridgade) were amongst the best in retelling their experiences. Perhaps it was that they were a different breed of officer - the 95th starting off as an experimental 'light' regiment, a corps established as skirmishers. They didn't fight in line, column and square and so didn't need to spend the hours on the drilling square. Instead they were encouraged to think for themselves and trained to take advantage of every piece of ground for harrassing the enemy.
And for light and witty reflections on Peninsular life, Kincaid is the master. He has a marvellous line in self-deprecating wit that you just can't help liking. For all its humour it is nor short on detail though and it is easy to take your mind back to life as they must have experienced it - at war in a foreign country 200 years ago.
A must buy!

For the Airman and His FamilyReview Date: 2004-09-16
For instance, if you are thinking of joining the Air Force, but you have a tattoo - what's the Air Force policy. What about educational opportunities, a lot of people enter the Air Force directly from high school and come out with masters degrees. How do you get the assignments you want.
These kinds of questions are things that the old hand master sargeant knows all about because he has been there for many years. This book was written by just such a sargeant and covers nearly any question possible. Anyone thinking about the Air Force should get two copies of this book, one for himself or herself, and another to leave with his family.

The Start Of The Retro Era In Stadium ConstructionReview Date: 2006-09-29
It also ushered in an era where public-private partnerships through tax dollars and other incentives became the means to new facilities. Richmond aptly shows the controversies that follow pro franchises when team owners & league representatives sit at the table with politicians, along with the oftentimes very loud public opinion being heard through the door.
There is a hidden gem in the history, and it concerns Art Modell, the move of the Colts to Indianapolis and the Cleveland Browns. Richmond writes that Modell wanted to move the Browns to Baltimore after the Colts fled the city in the midnight hour, and wanted to time the move with Cleveland receiving an expansion franchise.
The plan - that never got past the idea stage - was years before Modell moved the club to Baltimore and the book was published before the Browns did move to the city.
Books such as Ballpark may unfairly receive the tag of interest only for a reader from that region. At the time of its publication it could have been read as a news story. The text has held up well over the years and now a reader has an excellent history on how the era of baseball stadium construction got started.

These essays by the gentle Boone are about the silent communication that exists, or can exist, between people and animals. Boone was an adept at interspecies communication, at "the science and art of right relations." He plunged right in to universal vibrations and discovered man's unitive experiences with all things living.
"When one's heartbeat is in tune and in time with the universal heartbeat, everything that he meets will want to cooperate with him and be his friend," wrote Boone.
The book includes many stories of folks and animals coming together, discovering each other. Of earth reverberations, of dogs and plants, of a man who lived in the jungle for over forty years. "He had mastered, to a superlative degree, the science and art of right relations."
Here are high level adventures in kinship, life, and love. "Love, then, is the supreme attractive force. Humans who possess this capacity to love their pets and other animals must have within them a sort of love-magnet, a particular magnetic pole of affection."
The publication of these adventures is a good and brave act by a woman who rescued the manuscript from the trash after Boone passed on. She is Bianca Leonardo, editor, and owner of Tree of Life Publications.
"ADVENTURES..." is the sequel to Boone's earlier book, "KINSHIP WITH ALL LIFE" (Harper & Row), which has sold 300,000 copies since it was first published in 1954. The sequel is nicely done. We wish it the same success.
