Once I started reading The Presidents' Doctor, I found it difficult to put the book down. What especially intrigued me were the insights into the personal sides of Presidents Harding, Coolidge and Hoover as seen by Dr. Joel Boone, who served as a White House physician during their administrations. Despite their prominence, the three Presidents had individual and family joys, sorrows and challenges just as everyone else.

As I read Mr. Heller's descriptions, I pictured myself in the shoes of Dr. Boone and his family. Imagine meeting, providing medical care to and socializing with key national (and in some cases international) leaders and then at the end of the day returning to "regular" home life and routines.

The book captures the spirit of the times it covers. As an example, the reader can easily imagine the scene of President Harding and his entourage on their meandering, transcontinental train trip followed by an ocean voyage to Alaska and then a last train trip down the Pacific Coast to San Francisco where Harding met his untimely death. Indeed, in our current era of ever-faster communication, it is hard to conceive of a President running the nation without the benefit of airplanes, televisions, computers, fax machines, cell phones, etc. Yet, despite the lack of these conveniences, the leaders of the time somehow were able to manage the country.

In summary, I highly recommend The Presidents' Doctor for an absorbing and personalized account of three Presidential administrations and life in the U.S. in the early part of the 20th century through the perspective of the extremely dedicated and talented White House physician, Dr. Joel Boone.

If this book were a novel it would be a great read.. It is lively, has fascinating characters, and colorful background.

As a novel, however, it would have one fatal problem. As my English professor used to say, it would lack "an aura of verisimilitude". To put it in plain English, "You wouldn't believe it!".

However, it's not a novel. It is a well researched and thoroughly documented LIVE history book. It describes an absolutely incredible man, who performed absolutely incredible feats in his admirable life.

A few examples:

Joel Boone was a medical doctor. He was awarded a congressional medal of honor, the nation's highest award for bravery, while he was serving as a doctor! There are few enough medal of honor winners, but did you ever hear of a doctor - a non-combatant - winning one? Now you have.

In his early days he led and commanded troops in combat, even though his commission was as a medical officer.

He served several U.S. presidents and their families as their doctor.

Any one of these by itself is interesting and unusual. Taken all together they are unheard of - until now.

The book has a tremendous advantage over a novel. Since it reports on a real person, who really did these astonishing things, you have to believe they really happened. Poetic license would never get you this far. This is a book you don't want to miss.

Milton F. Heller,Jr. tells the story of his father-in-law with grace and lucidity. Admiral Boone came out of Pennsylania, along with his wife, to carve a nitch in history. His career spanned 50 years, a youthful Medal of Honor, serving as doctor to three first families, to director of Vetrans Administration. This slim volume is just what the doctor ordered for all americans who love their heroes. Great Christmas gift.

I bought Ms. Boone's book about Hillary Duff for my neice a while ago, so when this Raven book came out (another favorite of my neice) I didn't hesitate to pick it up. It's fun, fast-paced and positive and, of course, my neice loved it! And I enjoyed it, too. The photographs are great and the underlying message of pursuing your dreams and working hard to reach them is a theme I can endorse. My neice and all her friends have been reading and re-reading this book - I recommend it!

I bought this book as soon as I heard about it. Its great. It has lots of Raven pictures in it and all sorts of stories about her movies, music and tv carers. I had been wanting to learn more about this very talented actress but their arebn't many books about her. I am glad this one is now available. Buy it.

this book was really cool, beacause it had a bit of time travel in it, and even the history part was surprisingly interesting! anyone who has to do a report on daniel boone should definitely read this one!

Reading this book will give you example after example in the form of fascinating true stories written with clarity and humor. A must read for the spiritually open or for anyone who loves animals.

This man is irrepresible. Another biography you have to thank the publishers for realising it was worth reprinting.

There has been a lot of interest recently in the Peninsular War - and it seems the laconic and witty officers of the 95th (later the Rifle Bridgade) were amongst the best in retelling their experiences. Perhaps it was that they were a different breed of officer - the 95th starting off as an experimental 'light' regiment, a corps established as skirmishers. They didn't fight in line, column and square and so didn't need to spend the hours on the drilling square. Instead they were encouraged to think for themselves and trained to take advantage of every piece of ground for harrassing the enemy.

And for light and witty reflections on Peninsular life, Kincaid is the master. He has a marvellous line in self-deprecating wit that you just can't help liking. For all its humour it is nor short on detail though and it is easy to take your mind back to life as they must have experienced it - at war in a foreign country 200 years ago.

A must buy!

Kincaid's thoroughly entertaining account of his participation in some of the major campaigns on the Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars makes for lively, sometimes funny reading, though Kincaid never loses touch with the grim realities of warfare. His self-depricating humor, heart-felt patriotism, and sensitive reactions to death and destruction bring him to life, and makes the reader wish he/she had known him. He spends most of the book describing every-day life in Wellington's army, the hardships of traveling with an outnumbered and ill-supported force. His accounts of the battles are vivid and engaging. This work was extremely well-received at the time of its first publication, and is one of the sources for the popular Sharpe's series by Bernard Cornwell. It makes a wonderful companion book to anyone who appreciates Cornwell's ragtag officer.

I just signed up for the Air Force, so I bought this book to tell me a little bit more information on the Air Force.There is a lot of good information in this book for recruits as well as veterans.

Intended for anyone going into the Air Force, their families and others who by interest or other relationships are involved with air force personnel. That's quite a sentence, but it's true.

For instance, if you are thinking of joining the Air Force, but you have a tattoo - what's the Air Force policy. What about educational opportunities, a lot of people enter the Air Force directly from high school and come out with masters degrees. How do you get the assignments you want.

These kinds of questions are things that the old hand master sargeant knows all about because he has been there for many years. This book was written by just such a sargeant and covers nearly any question possible. Anyone thinking about the Air Force should get two copies of this book, one for himself or herself, and another to leave with his family.

Jack W. Boone has told seventeen widely varying--but quietly gripping--stories. He avoids such tempting tools of telling as profanity, wild sex, bizarre settings and weird people. But his stories make wonderful reading when you're by yourself, with time for reflections. Suggestion: to get the flavor of Boone, start with "Laura"--last in the book. You'll find you can't avoid reading the rest!

When I say this book is totally sweet I mean this book is TOTALLY SWEET!!!! I found this book to be a great introduction to the fascinating civilization of the Aztecs. The text stays vivid and colorful through the skill of the author and with the help of engaging first hand accounts. The pictures add a lot to present a detailed and interesting view of Ancient Aztec civilization. Yeah, this book rocks so hard I put it on my wishlist, even though I already read it.

This is an admirable example of how to introduce non-experts to an ancient culture without being pedantic or boring. In one hundred and fifty pages, Boone gives us a very readable summary of Aztec history, culture, religion, economics, and politics. While she describes the horrors of human sacrifice, she also lets us see the more positive sides of Aztec life, including the glory of Tenochtitlan. She helps us to understand how a small number of Spaniards brought down the empire. The book is well illustrated in color.

Terrific! If you do want to be a winner in the net age,do not hesitate to read it!

I am doing Masters in Business Admnistration. I read this book and found it the best book written on the subject of Marketing. Mr. Boone is simply the best, so is the book. The problem is that this book is too expensive for me to purchase. I issued this book from library. Being a student i can't afford this book.

Debby Boone creates a delightful addition to her series of children's books with "Counting Blessings". The subject of the book is obvious: recognizing the good things in each of our lives. What isn't so obvious is the type of blessings she highlights for the younger readers: the simple, ordinary things in Life to which children will be able to relate easily. The reading level of this book appears lower than that of Debby's earlier books. There certainly is less text to read, so this book may appeal to even younger readers. The book is illustrated by Gabriel Ferrer, Boone's husband. His style in this book is less fanciful than earlier books. The blocks of color in the backgrounds are bold, and the characters are less realistic. Together, Boone and Ferrer have created another excellent book to add to any child's library.

I love this book! It is written for younger children to help them learn to be thankful for all that they have...not the "I want more" to be happy, but be happy for what you do have. It also teaches children to open their eyes to what they do have...sight, sun, fresh air etc... This book is for younger children, but as an educator of middle school aged children, I would also give this book to someone of that age who often feels the world owes them something, and doesn't often take the time to be thankful for what they have. This book would also be appropriate for a child of any age that is feeling sorry for him/herself, or one who is depressed in many ways, to lift their sights and spirits. I think this book could also be used as a spring board for family discussions around the dinner table...what are YOU thankful for?
