Howard Fast Builds Important Bridges in this Book!Review Date: 2002-06-21
This is a straight-forward tale of youthful innocence lost and a search for peace-of-mind despite past tragedy. When Scott Waring's young wife was brutally murdered by the Gestapo on their 1939 honeymoon in Berlin, he is forced to spend many guilt-ridden and lonely years trying to sort out his life. It was through the important influence of Max Leiberman, his abrasive yet honest psychiatrist, and his newly-found love, Janet Goldman - the young NYC waitress/dancer who survived the atrocities of the Holocaust - that helped Scott overcome the horrors of his past and his own ingrained prejudices.
This is called "The Bridge Builder's Story" for more than one reason. Sure - Waring is an engineer who builds actual bridges ... but he also builds symbolic bridges between past & present as well as bridges of understanding amongst different faiths, nationalities, etc.
A fast-moving, easy-read that would make a great airplane book. I look forward to reading more of Howard Fast's novels.

Saint Saga #27Review Date: 2008-08-06
In the first story, set in Chicago, the Saint works to find the brain behind a protection racket; in the second, he unravels the mystery behind the rise of an apparently talentless New York boxer.
Both stories, unusually at this late date, also feature Patricia Holm and Hoppy Uniatz -- the latter in particularly fine form.
P.S. For a list of -- and discussion of -- all Charteris's Saint books, see my So You'd Like To... Guide.

Dull topic made fascinatingReview Date: 2004-07-02
D'Amato does not go in for cheap thrills and forumla plots that appeal to the most common denominator. Her plots are well-researched and rarely fail to please.
In Hard Luck, we have in series herione Cat Marsala an immensely likeable character. As an investigative freelance reporter, the gal has a real nose for trouble, even when reporting on the most benign subjects.
Was it merely a coincidence that Jack Sligh ends up dead on the day she was supposed to interview him? Jack, it seems, took a nosedive from a significant height and hits the pavement mere feet away from Cat.
Jack was employed by the Illinois State Lottery, and the day before he died, he hinted to Cat that there was some underhanded buisiness going on there. Is there evidence of misappropriation of state lottery funds?
Soon after Jack's plunge, Cat becomes the victim of arson. With a ruined apartment, Cat is quite convinced that Jack's death wasn't suicide.
With a lottery convention in full swing in Chicago, Cat learns as much as she can about the ins and outs of legal gambling, all the while searching for a reason why anyone would want Jack Sligh dead. And her, too.
D'Amato deserves full praise for taking a thoroughly dull subject and making it appealing. The world of legal gambling outside of Las Vegas has never been so fascinating.

When I looked at it, it was organized into sections like "food names" and "literary characters." It had a good selection and a good variety of original pet names. Overall, I think it was a good buy.
