As a teacher, this book is delightful. We never outgrow good picture books. These photographs are marvelous and the story tells us how funny black bears can be. The "bear facts" at the end make it an educational book for all ages to enjoy. One to be read again and again.

Petunia: The True Story of a Naughty Pigeon-Toed Boone Hollow Bear
What a terrific book for all adults and youngsters, whether they read it themselves or have it read to them.

PeTunia takes us along on her adventures and mishaps as she heads for Boone Hollow. She narrates or thinks aloud in a most endearing, humorous way. She is thoroughly entertaining and bound to put a big smile on the reader's face. And wait until you see the spectacular photographs of her on every page! I doubt you'll find a comparable book. There are educational "bear facts" at the end of the story, which is a very nice plus. I'd highly recommend this book, but beware, you will fall in love!

This is truly delightful reading that will bring smiles to kids of all ages. The photographs in this book are exceptional, and they capture this "naughty" bear in such endearing poses. The author's love of and respect for animals clearly show through on each and every page of this fun, educational book. I love PeTunia!

PeTunia is an enchanting book. The photographer/author uses her skills well. It's almost like PeTunia knew this book would be made as her body language and facial expressions couldn't fit the text better. This book will have the reader, child or adult, smiling from start to finish while they share an afternoon in Boone Hollow with PeTunia, a young bear doing what comes naturally. Trish Kirk shares with us in such a delightful way just what a wild and free young bear does. I'd recommend this book for any age group. It's perfect for sharing with a youngster or for a teacher to share with a class. The bear facts at the end of the book are also accompanied perfectly by photos of bears in the wild.

I was in the room as my adult daughter read this book and there was audible giggling as she went from page to page and saw these real, yet often comical, poses and read the captions. A book for "kids" of all ages it seems!

Boone lived - and no doubt still lives - what he believes. He believes what he learned from a receptive and appreciative relationship with a very special dog. Because of reading Boone, I've greatly enhanced my relationships with All Life and it has become easy (most of the time) to love and appreciate life for itself - no matter what shape it comes in. But it is still somewhat difficult to fully love centipedes, for example. Not only are they fast-moving crawly beings whom we cannot keep out, but they are moderately toxic to our cats - all of whom are hunters. So the cats invariably catch the centipedes and get bitten in the act of dispatching them to centipede heaven. Our flies stay out of trouble by staying just out of reach, although a huge moth lost a battle a couple of days ago! I've had communications from many of my animals who have passed out of physical form but who are definitely still alive, as is Strongheart. In my list of Strongheart's (and Boone's) qualities are those that have taught me to hear more clearly what my animal and human friends are sharing with me from the "other" side. My life has been - and is still being - greatly enriched.

I read every pet-loss book I could find when my beloved dog, an 11-year cancer survivor on all natural remedies, died in my arms at the age of 19.
This was one of the very few books that truly spoke to the depth of my pain and provided solace. It gave me a way to be with my grief without plunging me face first into it.

This is Boone's timeless, poetic, and insightful journal, which documents his inner journey while outwardly, he travels and observes the world after the passing of his beloved dog, Strongheart. It left me feeling comforted, introspective, and no longer so alone. A beautiful and wise book, one I have given as a gift to many.

One of the greatest books of all time.

I read this book when I was in high school, and it changed the way I interact with animals, and my outlook on life. I couldn't find it until I looked for it on Amazon.com. 25 years later, it still inspires me the way it did then. Now I'm excited to share it with everyone I meet. It teaches the unconditional love of animals for the humans who are willing to share their lives with them and learn from them. Everyone should read Letters to Strongheart.

If you love animals, most of all pets this is a must read book as it reveals insight about how to communicate
and understand your pets with respect and love. Boone's timeless book was published in the late 1930's and because of his British background his use of words may seem 'dated' to some readers. I found this to be a wonderful book. I recommend it.

If you have read any of the works by William Least Heat-Moon such as Blue Highways and River-Horse, it will be helpful to know that what he does for byways and rivers resembles in certain respects what Mattia does for 25 men named George Bush. She locates them throughout the United States, visits them, has lengthy conversations with them, and then shares her experiences (and theirs) in this book. I am impressed by the nature and extent of the variety of differences between and among the 25 as well as the nature and extent of differences between them and two other, more famous men who share their name. Mattia is to be commended on the care with which she organizes and then presents the material. Least Heat-Moon enables his readers to explore the byways and rivers with him as he travels throughout the United States. Mattia enables her own readers to explore the hearts, minds, and souls of 25 fellow human beings who share the same name, obviously, but who reveal their individuality with style, grace, and eloquence. I sincerely hope that the current occupant of the Oval Office reads this book.

The only thing that's remotely deficient about Mattia's text is the potentially misleading title. I was on a crowded beach, totally absorbed, when a passerby remarked "a conversation with George Bush...is that even possible?" "Conversations" should be on a required reading list for all Americans, especially those who think they know their country. Together, the author and her subjects paint a picture of the real America, not the distorted, media-blasted version that inundates us every day. Mattia says, "...I believe that I stumbled upon some truths along the back roads of the United States." Agreed.

I don't read non-fiction as a general rule, because it doesn't hold my interest. This book grabbed me on the first page and didn't let go until the end. The lives of the Georges are so interesting that I quickly forgot they share a name with a President I don't particularly like. These are, as author Mattia concludes, quiet heroes whose inspiration is in not just in surviving life's trials and tribulations, but in triumphing over them. Mattia has a remarkable ability to step back from both herself and her subjects to allow the stories to command our attention without judgment or apology. The author's own internal journey as she travels from coast to coast is every bit as compelling as nearly 100 years of history told by the people who lived it. This is story-telling at its finest.

If you are interested in authenticity as a Christian, so that your home life reflects Christ, then you will enjoy this book and get a lot out of it. My husband and I read it together in the morning after we read the Bible together. We want our lives to be Christian, from the inside out, so that the way we treat each other at home is true to what Jesus told us to do. We want to be obedient, but we find that we are in a lifelong battle between the flesh and the Spirit, and we can use the help from Godly Christians to make it real for us and show us the applications from the Word of God. Wellington Boone has written a really great book. It's going to seem a little radical, maybe, because he tells us to not fight back, and to be willing to humble ourselves and get stepped on a bit, but only out of the strength that we have by the power of God in our lives. I love how he says we should be like worms, not like snakes...because when a snake gets stepped on, it strikes back, but a worm is easily crushed. He goes in to a lot of detail about how husbands can love their wives as Christ loves the church. I believe this is where he excels, in teaching men, because he is known as being a speaker at Promise Keepers. But there is application for single people (who wish to be married, especially) and also for women. Because we are all called to be little Christs. We all need to stop with our foolishness and be broken hearted over our sinful attitudes and actions...then we can turn to God and in humility, be transformed and become more Christlike. Our private lives should not be different from how we act at church. That's what this book is all about. I wish it was still in print because I want to recommend it to so many different people. But you can buy a used copy for very little money, and the shipping is only $3.99. I think it is a great book. Even if a person has a slightly different doctrinal background, if you are a Christian, you will find this book thought provoking and challenging. Next, I am going to buy Wellington Boone's book about taking the Low Road to New Heights. What a great title! He sure knows how to name a book!

i really liked this book. It gave tips on how to raise my daughter to look for a good Godly man. Also it gave me insight into the responsibilities of a husband. As a result i am not going to tote burdens that i am not supposed to carry. I have taken a better attitude of service to my husband (when things don't seem fair). Even though my husband refused to read the book,I started a family practice of the 8 fold anointing in the book every day. And immediately I have seen changes in my man going starting to go out of his way to serve me. I would really like to see a part two-with more to say on immaturity. how it is identified and how to kill it.

Our 3 1/2 and 5 1/2 year old daughters really enjoy this book. I love it so much that I give it to friends who have toddlers or preschoolers.

The messages are so sweet and the words are appealing to young children. Nothing scary, just pure tenderness and comfort. It's a collection of one page stories, (each with a different theme) that interest young children - growing, blankets, rain, falling asleep, bath time, dreams, favorite toys etc. The format allows for good conversations to arise with your child.

This book is a perfect one to read to children when they are in bed for the night. Each two pages together make a theme, the text on one side and the illustration on the other. The topics are the kind that will be in the minds of children as they prepare for bed. How a bath washes all of the events of the day off your body and prepares you for a new day and new activities. How the sun makes a journey around the world each day so that children all around the world can experience the glory of the rising and setting sun. The phases of the moon, how it starts small and expands out to a full circle, going back down to a small sliver and eventually winking out to nothing. The sounds you hear in a house as all the creatures inside and out settle down for the evening.
The text is just right for the young child to hear and the illustrations are colorful with few sharp changes in color. Both the author and illustrator are to be commended for the quality of the work. If I had encountered this book when my daughter was two, I would have read it to her many times.

The Black Lights

It's no wonder that after reading this Muhammad Ali chose Thomas Hauser to write his story.

How this book got it's name is another great example of what Hauser can do with just one paragraph!

I had assumed that this would be somewhat of a dry read or just not as good as Hauser's other books on boxing and the world of boxing. I had thought that since it's Hauser's first attempt at writing about boxing that it would be just ok - maaaan was I wrong - THIS is a fantastic book!

Hauser is an amazing writer and is exceptional in all his writings about the sweet science.

This is a great example of a book successfully covering and achieving what it set out to do. You get educated on the inside story of professional boxing and get a great and personal insight into the world of Billy Costello.

I was caught up in every chapter and did not want to put this book down. I've never heard of Billy Costello before this book and found myself being nervous for him, being excited for him, cheering for him and feeling now like I was there with him.

Great book for anyone.

This is a great book by a writer I truly admire. Thomas Hauser wrote an incredible biography of The Greatest, Muhammad Ali, and in this book he really gives the reader an inside look at boxing.

Focusing in the career of former champ Billy Costello, the author provides an interesting view about promoters (Don King included, of course), managers and the terrible agony of the fighter and his fears, in and out of the ring.

Really recommended!

The greatest ... a must-read for boxing fans

I first read The Black Lights soon after its publication in the mid-80s. I felt then that it was as good if not better than any non-fiction examination of boxing. Rereading it recently, I was still impressed by its thoroughness, insight and candor. Sadly, the same characters who held a stranglehold on boxing then are still in charge - King, Sulaiman, Arum. The only new player is HBO, which has replaced the three networks as the major bankroller of big fights. The fighters are still used for all they are worth and then tossed aside.
Billy Costello, whose Nov. 1984 title defense is the book's focus, had a distinguished ring career. Fortunately, he also had Thomas Hauser to record his grace under pressure. You cannot help but admire Costello for his dedication and decency amid the scoundrels who flock to the sport. Readers are sure to come away from The Black Lights with the feelings of true boxing fans - a mixture of fascination, admiration and revulsion.

This Book is a Definite Contenda!

This is a nice quick read that gives a behind-the-scenes view of what it takes to put together a world championship fight. The book follows the career of former Superlightweight champion Billy Costello and the individuals that comprise help him reach the top. Interspersed throughout the book are anectdotes regarding the promoters, trainers, televison execs, and boxers who all want a piece of Costello.

The book really takes off when Costello's camp tries to set up a title defense for the champ. From the stuggles to find an opponent who won't pose much of a risk to Costello's crown, to the virtual soul-selling that occurs to get the fight broadcast, to the fight itself, you feel the turmoil that Costello, his trainer and manager all go through. The description of the actual fight is written so vividly you feel like you're the one in the ring.

This true story makes you sorry you never followed Costello's career as it was happenng in the early 1980's. And as an added bonus, the author gives you one more reason (as if you needed another) to despise Don King.

I just recently discovered the wonderful romance author Lynne Graham and I can't seem to get enough of her books: they are superb. Desert Bride is another gripping story by this author (if not the best I have read so far). I won't really go into the details about the story for it has already been posted, but the hero, Prince Razul was just breathtaking. You can see from the beginning of the story that he is deeply in love with the heroine (Bethany), but very vulnerable due to fear of rejection. I stayed up all night to finish the story and believe me, you won't put it down once you begin.

I first read this book four years ago. It was the first Lynne Graham book I'd ever read, and the second Mills & Boon I'd read. Lynne Graham remains my favourite M&B author, and I avidly wait anything new from her. "The Desert Bride" is a Valentino-esque story of love blossoming in the desert, with Razul as the crown prince of a fictitious middle-eastern country, and Beth,an english scholar researching his country. Beth finds herself stranded in Razul's country after becoming separated from her obligatory male companion. When Beth finds herself in trouble with the airport security upon entering the country alone, we discover that she and Razul knew each other while they were studying at university together some five years before. Beth uses Razul's name to get her out of trouble, at which point she is whisked off to the palace, somewhat against her will. It turns out that Beth and Razul had a rather steamy past - but nothing came of it - until now. Our hero is tall, dark, handsome, and very compelling - and it is hard to understand why it takes so long for Beth to see this! There are the usual elements of romance novels - a jealous woman who threatens to break our couple up; falling in love followed by a misunderstanding, then realisation - and of course, a happy ending. But one thing that is not usual, is that Graham has a remarkable story-telling ability, and her attention to detail and rich portrayal of the scenery our characters are experience is something which pervades all of her novels. 'The Desert Bride' is no exception. Graham's description of the palace both inside and the gardens, is especially beautiful, as are the desert scenes. As such, this is my favourite desert romance novel, and if you like this sort of romance, you will positively fall in love with this one. I also strongly recommend two other novels by Lynne Graham - 'An Arabian Courtship' (another desert romance, but entirely different from this one); 'The Secret Wife' (this is my favourite Lynne Graham, and I highly recommend it, for the strength of the characters and storyline); and 'The Spanish Groom' (for the humor and a heroine who actually has some misgivings about her looks!)

This is a terrific addition to the library of practicing neuropsycologists. The authors have really done their homework and it is clearly evident that they are excellent scholars. Each of the NP tests reviewed in this book (popularly used tests and some lesser known ones), which is by no means an exhaustive review of all NP tests, is a tour de force of a literature review, a critical analysis, and recommendations. The reader is struck by the huge amount of research that the authors did, and the work that went into such integration. I don't think this norm reference, however, can stand alone, notwithstanding its excellence, since it presents a selection of NP tests and does not try to be all inclusive. But rest assured that those tests discussed are presented comprehensively. Practicing neuropsychologists will also want Spreen & Strauss, of course, as well as regular updated norms of other tests. But this text goes a long way in helping to solve the 'norms problem' in contemporary clinical neuropsychology. It really is a must have!

A Heart Traced in Sand is a personnal and intimate account of a father's unconditional love for his daughter and their journey together through the valley of the shadow of death.
Author Steven Boone pulls out his artist's palette and paints an amazing landscape of hard choices, heart breaking emotion, hope, fear, courage, faith and transcendence.
This book, about the loss of a daughter in the bud of her young life, carries with it an uncanny strength. The reader turns the last page feeling honored to have been privy to such intimacy and caring in this important experience of transition. This book is more than a story about loss and grieving, it is a gift of the cherishing of LIFE itself!
