Radical, crystal-clear...Review Date: 2000-09-15
Every chapter take you deeper and deeper into the Word of God. One of the chapter that really impact me was the How do we become a disciple. Why? Because this chapter open my eyes to realize that being a christian is not just go to church and assist to few activities. No, is not. Being a Disciple is - to be able to die to ourselves everyday.
This book is for radical believers willing to commit to Christ. If you are a believer that want to commit to Him, read this book and you will not be the same.
God Bless You!!

Very Informative, Very AccessibleReview Date: 2008-07-31
Jordan chronicles Jacques's life from the University of Paris to his rise to abbot of Chaalis and later Pontigny. The theme of Jacques's life seems to be one of service to his order. Not only did Jacques repeatedly have to defend his orders exemptions, but also he had to manage the financial well being of his abbey during very trying times. Jordan emphasizes that France was torn by war throughout Jacques's lifetime. In addition to the incessant warfare, this period saw crop failures due to poor weather as well as bouts of plague.
Jordan's narrative about the career of Jacques de Thérines illuminates these tumultuous years of the early fourteenth century. Jordan uses the story of Jacques to open a window into the broader world of medieval France. The narrative is slanted in favor of the Cistercians, but this bias preserves the perspective of Jacques and the Cistercians themselves. And the preservation of their perspective is important to historical inquiry in its own right. Besides the historical interest of this book, Jordan has crafted an excellent narrative. It is readable and enjoyable, and he maintains the pace by not straying too far from the career of Jacques. Additionally, Jordan uses the techniques of storytelling to great effect. For example early in the book he describes the burial practices of the Cistercians, and then he revisits the theme at the end when describing Jacques death. All these things make Unceasing Strife, Unending Fear and excellent book.
