This was actually BTW's first autobiography. Most people only know of him through UP FROM SLAVERY and the ATLANTA EXPOSITION ADDRESS (often later referred to as the "Atlanta Compromise"). But this is a really interesting work. More candid than his later writings (this was originally written in 1900), he scolds South Carolina's racist Senator Benjamin Tillman for Jim Crowing blacks in SC ("if you think education is expensive, try ignorance"). He also gets raw on the Louisiana Legislature for similar reasons ("I once heard a white boy say "I have seen a man hanged, now I'd like to see one burned." Before I hear a remark like that from one of my sons, I would rather see him in his grave."). This does a lot to expand the public image of BTW from simply that as an "Uncle Tom." There was far more to him than met the eye, and this book shows it.

Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, And The Struggle For Racial Uplift by Jacqueline M. Moore (Associate Professor of History at Austin College, Sherman, Texas) is an informed and informative depiction of two remarkable and quiet different men who helped shape Black American history. Placing each man's work in historical context, and studying the debate conflict of ideas that both had and alternatives to either one's point of view, Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, And The Struggle For Racial Uplift is an intelligently written, scholarly, evenhanded, and "reader friendly" analytical survey and presentation which is strongly recommended for students of Black Studies, as well as non-specialist general readers with an interest in the contributions of Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois to American society and culture.

Dead Water Rites

Review Date: 2002-10-28
Dead Water Rites is the fourth book in the Booker Series by Monty Joynes, however readers new to Joynes will understand its powerful message of man's fate if he continues to rape the earth.

A white man known sometimes as Booker and sometimes as Anglo "searches for new identity and spiritual completeness among the Pueblo people." He learns how water is the very lifeblood of the People, and that they regard it as a "living being." A tribal elder sees the water drying up and dying, and trusts Booker with the mission of finding the source of the "sick water."

If the water is truly dying, then the dead water rites will be performed, and life will cease to exist.

As he searches for the sick water, Booker also continues his journey of spiritual growth. He meets a militant female environmentalist, and begins learning of some of the politics involved in water rights. He also learns that perhaps the celibate life isn't right for him after all.

A group of land developers with the philosophy that "any day is a good day to make money" are also looking at the water. They draw up a proposal for a gambling casino, replete with promises of economic security. Buried in the fine print are the clauses handing over all water rights.

A former real estate developer himself, Booker recognizes the true impact of the casino on the People. He explains this to the tribal elders, who say they will "continue to pray and seek a vision." Booker and the young woman are seriously injured in a car accident, from which it takes months to recover. The developers move ahead unhampered with their plans.

Dead Water Rites "is lucid and literary, an articulate and artful plea to cease our self-destructive exploitation of the environment and native people." Those who read it will gain a new respect for the liquid essential to all life on Earth, and a better understanding of those who seek to keep it alive.

Tragic fall of a family

Review Date: 2003-12-17
Bernice Rubens' novels are difficult to find here in America but are definitely worth reading.
The Elected Member is about the Zweck family, a well-to-do Orthodox Jewish family in England, and how it slowly disintegrated because of their firm hold onto their culture. The novel centers on the eldest son Norman who once was a top lawyer, but had to be admitted to a mental instituion after suffering a nervous breakdown. But what causes his breakdown? Was it his parents who simply hold onto him too tightly? His 2 sisters whom he committed crimes of the heart against? Rubens expertly transport us to the Zwecks' family past and slowly reveals how past mistakes can come back to haunt everyone in a family.

A very good hisorical western mystery by a wonderful writer
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1997-03-31
In the Wyoming Territory, Dr. Theophrastus Herkimer's traveling medicine show arrives in the small town of Le Four. The primary product being tendered is Mirakola, a very popular elixir because it reportedly cures just about every known ailment and even some unknown ills. However, everything goes wrong when numerous customers, including the local sheriff, die after consuming the potion. Though the townsfolk are convinced that Herkimer did it, former sheriff cripple Lobo Blacke believes someone else must have altered the elixir. ....... Lobo and his employee Quinn Booker begin to investigate the deaths. They soon learn that only a few bottles of Mirakola was tainted with poison. Though they prove that there are many suspects, the townsfolk want to lynch Herkimer, who they still blame for the mass murders. Quinn, serving as the sheriff, has to stop the mob from killing an innocent man while working with Blacke to identify the real killer. ....... FATAL ELIXIR is a fast-paced western drama that brings insight to the Old West that only could have come from the pen of one of the masters, William L. DeAndrea. The story line is fast-paced, complex, and fun, and Blacke and Quinn are a great detective team. The first novel in this series, WRITTEN IN FIRE, is also a great tale. Mr. DeAndrea recently died, but left a fantastic legacy behind with this book. .....Harriet Klausner

A VERY WELL DONE ESSAY

Review Date: 2005-02-24
This well done essay from Washington is a bit of a summation of Mr. Washington's many speeches and an accumulation of various articles he wrote through his life time. This work, like most, must be viewed from a historical perspective, i.e. Washington was a product of his times. Agree or disagree with his observatons and recommendations, this is still a great work and wonderful research too. If you can find a copy, buy it and hang on to it...the older the better. If nothing else, it is a good investment. Recommend this one highly.

Finally, a comprehensive history of the modern European Union
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-15
Booker and North have done yeoman work in exploring scores of original sources related to the modern European Union. Most impressively, they have returned to the 1920s, when the contemporary notion of "European Union" began. They note that an element of deception has been present since the very earliest years of the project, demonstrating that the idea's early exponents believed that their utopian ideals, whilst admirable, ought to be realized without the knowledge or participation of the member countries' peoples. In fact, Booker and North reveal that a strong tendency of the strain of Unionists which created the present Brussels regime has been to shun democracy by creating a supranational authority with no meaningful accountability to the people, whilst simultaneously subverting individual states' national sovereignty. A thoroughly absorbing and fascinating read, one essential for anyone interested in contemporary European politics. The defeat in France and the Netherlands of the EU constitution has not rendered this book irrelevant; indeed, it provides a warning about the accumulated power of a body still very much in being and still very zealous to reach the consummation of its endeavors.
