My toddler has loved this book since he was six-months old. He loves the pictures and rhymes on each page. It has been a constant favorite and we have read it together over and over and over again. A must have for any toddler's collection.

A book for Babies and Toddlers, Paddington Bear Goes to Market gives a short story that catches the excitement of Paddington Bear's morning shopping. Good uses of repetition and rhyme makes this book very appealing to a younger audience. This was used in a toddler storyhour and the children enjoyed this book. The illustrations, done in watercolors, give great detail which allows for more discussion on the book.

This guide has a complete listing of the books and movies up to "The World is Not Enough." It's a light and entertaining read for casual Bond fans or for people who don't know much about the older Bond movies, like myself. However, I can't imagine that hardcore Bond fans could enjoy this. Probably those fans know more about Bond than is included in this book. The listings for the books are about a page each, and for the movies rarely exceeds two pages. So if you've seen all the movies or read all the books, then I don't recommend it for you. However, if you'd like to have an introduction into the world of Bond, it's an excellent book. I thouroughly enjoyed it from cover to cover.

I've been a James Bond fan my entire life (I was born one year after DR. NO was released), and I found this to be a fun little volume that takes quick looks into Bond's origins, the novels, the films and the phenomenon.

But I really had to wonder how the authors could rate THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN better than ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE and THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. I found a few other errors, but this, to me, is the most glaring mistake in the book.
In "The Girls" chapter, both ladies from YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE are missing.
In the middle of page 170, a quote from Tiger Tanaka is mistakenly attributed to FOR YOUR EYES ONLY.
Bottom of page 246: "sene" instead of "sense."
On page 259, a sentence reads "Bond also appears there to visit the grave of his dead wife Tracy in ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE," which is very odd since Tracy expires in the final seconds of that film!

I also wondered why there was no mention of Sydney Reilly, the World War I British spy of whom Fleming said, "Bond is just an imaginary figure--but he's no Sydney Reilly."
(There are books and a mini-series with Sam Neill called REILLY: ACE OF SPIES available).

These quibbles aside, this is definitely a handy little volume for the James Bond fan.
It's on my Swinging Sixties Spy shelf at home.

This is one of those books for someone who wants to know as much about James Bond as possible in just a short amount of time. It gives you just what it promises, a rough history about Bond. If you truly want to impress people with your knowledge about 007 you need to research more. But if you want to just get by in a conversation about Bond this is the book for you. So I recommend this for anyone who needs to know about the most famous secret agent out there in just 007 minutes.

Surprisingly, this book is enjoyable and easy to read. It contains information, I have not found anywhere else, that is vital to know before investing in savings bonds. If you already own savings bonds, you will benefit from reading this book before you sell them. Savings bonds are not the simple investment most people believe they are. I checked this book out from the library, but found it so valuable I am purchasing a copy for myself.

This book contains more in-depth information than theinformation available from government publications or the website. Use that information and thatwebsite, but also get this book. I use the free downloadable SavingsBond Wizard from the government website, and also set up an Excelspreadsheet to keep up bond statements as outlined in this book--whichis a more effective statement to aid decision-making. Some of theissues covered in this book: don't trust your bank to know whatthey're doing / understanding interest rates / timing issues re:redemption and maturity / organizing your bonds and keeping records /recovering lost bonds / tracking your investment (using the wizardand/or a statement you develop yourself or purchase from a service) /deciding to hold or fold -- evaluating performance of your bonds /comparing savings bonds to other investment options / taxation issuesinluding estate/gift/inheritance tax issues / using savings bonds forretirement / exchanging for HH current-income bonds / purchasing /reissuing / redeeming / tax-free for higher education feature / bondsas gifts / the new I bond / forms of ownership / bonds for minors /resources. This is a completly thorough book on every type of US Savings Bonds with good advice on how to purchase them, when to purchase them, and when to redeem them as well as how to redeem them. It has good structural content, with easy to follow guidelines. It also contains addresses to send to for more information. Like any book in this field, by the time an author has it published, it has some obsolete material, but I must say I still found it very useful. The reason for my most current purchase is that I have purchesed two other copies and have given them each away as gifts.

This book should not be sold any longer. Since it was published back in 1999 - and is now close to 5 years old - it contains a lot of mis-information. The U S Treasury Department has changed many of the rules and regulations concerning savings bonds - most notably over the past 18 months. A person purchasing this book to learn more about U S Savings Bonds will get good information, and bad information. The problem is that he/she will not know what information is good, and what information is bad. Thus, by not buying the book, the savings bond owner is probably better off. I do not challenge the idea that it is important for savings bond owners to learn all about their own collection of savings bonds. They need to know the rules and regulations, so that they can make informed, intelligent decisions about keeping or cashing in bonds - and the proper time to do it. But any printed book is not the place to find it: the information becomes obsolete too quickly. The internet is the place to find accurate, up-to-date information about savings bonds. Because any web site can be updated quickly and easily, the information presented there is more likely to be current. Because it takes the author so long to prepare the book, and then the time it takes to get it printed (published) and then put into the distribution piepline, I suggest that any book about savings bonds is already obsolete the day it becomes available for sale to the public. Furthermore, according to reliable sources who work for the Savings Bond Division of the U S Treasury Department, numerous additional changes will be forthcoming during the next 2 years. For my money, the internet is the ONLY place to find all the information that you could possibly need to know about U S Savings Bonds. Just type in "savings bonds" in any search engine.

I found this book to be a vast waste of time. There is very little of practical use to the trader. The author spends the majority of the book on his "Triple Crown" of reducing taxes. None of which you can do without a CPA. You would be better off visiting this book at your local bookstore, jotting down the "Triple Crown" and then hiring a CPA to explain it to you. The writing is poor and difficult to follow -- not because of the technical difficulty, but, because the sentences and paragraphs are so poorly constructed. Save the $( ) and look elsewhere.

I just received this book this week after some publishing delays and I'm glad I didn't decide to cancel the pre-publication order. This book is well worth the wait. It's much better than Tesser's previous book. There are lots of examples and even goes into details on estate planning in addition to the tax advantages of trader's status. This book will definitely give you something to think about how to plan and do your taxes!

I own this update and his last book. Basically concepts are good and prose somewhat entertaining. However, here is the catcher. If you are going to use a CPA for doing all this stuff be prepared to hock your house and your family. What the CPA'S do not get the lawyers will when they charge you for setting up your FLP. I saw one bit of communication where the authors states that refiling was not worthwhile when his fees were factored in !!!!. That should tell you something. You do not believe me just call his office for a quote. This guy's has found the hoy grail of relieving most investors...opps ! i mean us traders from our profits !

WHY THE HELL THE GOVT DID NOT MAKE TAXES SIMPLER IS BEYOND ME...!. trust the feds to complicate anythin they touch...!

PROBABLY BECAUSE THE CPA LOBBY LIKE THE TRIAL LAWYERS AND THE NRA HAVE DEEP POCKETS TO KEEP THINGS THERE WAY.

Like the Nici bond scheme, so central to the plot, there is little redeeming value to "Wall and Mean." The book suffers from a number literary flaws such as cartoonish characters, desultory dialog, and plodding plot. The twists and turns the author, Tom Bernard, presents are at best illogical, and at worst (to turn a title) just 'woeful and mean'.
What is successful in this book are the scenes involving stale trading floor antics, overstated trader debaucheries, and recycled Wall Street anecdotes. It is always fun to recall Wall Street excesses brought to literary light in "Liars Poker" and the rest of the Street tell-alls. Read those books instead.
This book breaks no new ground and if not for its one redeeming value, I would have demanded a refund. The author's proceeds are given to autism research, which is quite a worthy cause. But I cannot recommend the book for that reason alone, rather you should donate the entire cost of the book to autism research and cut out the middle-man.

Buy it. Read it. Enjoy it.

George Wilhelm lives in a rarified world where his intellect is celebrated, the newest young phenomenon on the Emerging Markets desk at City Trust Bank in New York, one of a select few. George's singular vice is gambling, but then he has always had the touch... until he doesn't. Then Wall Street meets the mean streets and Wilhelm learns the hard way that bookies don't wait for payday to collect their money. Reeling from a wakeup call delivered by two thugs who have purchased his contract, George is introduced to the sudden brutality of the criminal underbelly that lurks below the surface of big money; and thugs they are, two lowlifes whose massive biceps belie any patience or tolerance when their money is at stake.

While struggling to pay the weekly vig, George comes up with an elaborate scheme to raise the sum he needs to get out from under the threat of bodily harm, taking on a partner to accomplish the sophisticated plan that is inspired by the intricacies of trading in which he excels. One step ahead of the violence that awaits his failure, George juggles work, romance and an increasing panic, mixing with men of questionable repute from Miami to the Bahamas, desperate to escape his compromising circumstances and go back to a normal life. Although George's plan will make more sense to anyone familiar with the vagaries of stocks and hedge funds, clearly the risk is significant, both personally, in his career and potentially, his life.

A former stock broker, the author molds his tale around a young man's hubris and his unfortunate susceptibility to the vice of gambling. George skates to the limit and back over one harrowing long weekend, learning quickly the duplicity of greed. Although the author attempts a bit of American Psycho gallows humor at the end, the whole is uneven, the brutality of George's choices an uncomfortable match with his levity. One is never sure if Wilhelm is a genius or a fool; he is, however, unlikable, as are the rest of the characters, either too self-centered or stereotypical to leave a lasting impression. (A caveat: you can't ignore Bernard's generosity; proceeds from the sale of Wall and Mean go to Autism Speaks and Safe Minds.) Luan Gaines/2007.

This book could have been much better if the author had expanded the story more. The book was too expensive for the amateurish way it was printed. The book was very poorly printed. It was only 129 pages long. The story line was good but not long enough. The characters were very likeable but had little depth. If this was the author's first book, she has potential.

Total disclosure, I don't, as a practice, read many love stories, but having gotten to know the author a little, I decided to give it a read.

I enjoyed this book, especially the premise behind the story. This is what kept my attention, as I began to wonder just how the two main characters were going to meet after their other-worldly encounter. I also liked the unexpected twist at the end.

This story should be made into a movie, since it offers something that a lot of love stories don't, or be made part of an anthology of love stories in a similar vein, just to get the author's name out there with more established and famous writers.

This author's knowledge of the paranormal, her understanding of human nature, and her setting is unsurpassed. I felt like I knew Laura and Julian well by the time I had finished and had been to the places she'd described. Also, the story was conceivable which isn't always the case with books which have paranormal elements, and makes it a keeper for me. I read it long into the night, and could not put it down until I had finished the last word. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a love story with a twist. This book is not to be missed!

Very little in the way of physical explanations for how the devices might work
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-31
While this book is very interesting to read, that interest is generated more by the descriptions of the movies than it is by the explanation of the physics. Parker is clearly a huge fan of 007 James Bond and he lists the movies, the actors that played Bond, the plots and all the incredible stunts and gadgets carried out and used by the super spy. However, there is relatively little space devoted to the physics of the stunts or the devices. There are images of some of the most memorable vehicles as well as simple pictures of Bond's favorite pistol and a GPS receiver. I didn't do a precise count, but it seemed that images of the devices outnumbered the images similar to those you would find in a standard physics textbook.
Don't misunderstand; I loved this book, the summaries of the movie plots kept my interest throughout. However, that is what it really is and the sections where the physics is described generally seem to be an afterthought rather than the primary point of the book.

Physics of James Bond

Review Date: 2006-07-13
This book discusses physics as applied to the world of James Bond 007, but is done for more of entertainment value. It should not be taken to be a serious book, but rather for pleasure. The physics is rather basic/simple in nature, lacking any real depth of content, but does address some physical concepts that 007 may be up against.

Exciting Descriptions and Simple Formulas
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-20
When I bought this book, I was expecting some brief descriptions of the various stunts, gadgets and weapons used in the James Bond movies, along with a brief scientific critique of how realistic they are (or could be) in real life. Although the book's content wasn't quite like that, I did thoroughly enjoy it. The author, who clearly appears to be an avid James Bond fan, has written a book that seems to have a double focus: (i) to describe several scenes from all the James Bond movies along with a summary of each of the plots, and (ii) to describe some of the physics involved regarding some of the stunts, gadgets, weapons and technology portrayed in these movies. The scene descriptions that are presented are very exciting and well detailed (in some cases, too detailed), but most are without commentary on the reality of the physics involved; some of these descriptions are repeated in the book. The physics that is described, complete with simple formulas, is quite entertaining, although there are several misprints and a few errors, e.g., use of "increase" when "decrease" should have been used - something that more careful editing would have easily fixed. In some cases, the author does comment on physical possibility of some of the technology used in these movies. The writing style is very engaging and the book is difficult to put down. Overall, I found this book quite entertaining. I recommend it to James Bond fans, old and new, as well as to those interested in seeing simple formulas used to describe how certain aspects of the world work.

As a scientist who went thru the rigors of getting a PhD in an American public university, I have noticed many subtle but inefficient practices. One of the worst goes as follows. A certain promising doctoral student starts on his (or her) research. His advisor hands him a classic text to read. Said text is nigh incomprehensible, but our prodigal student endeavors and comes to gradually understand the text and apply it to his studies. He graduates, begins his career and eventually gets that tenured position. Years later when he supervises his first graduate student, he imparts said text upon a new sufferer and the process begins anew. This book by W. A. Harrison is such a text. It is extremely hard to read, the words are small, there are few images or graphs or plots, and the examples are not geared for the computer age. But, because this book came out when solid state simulations began to spread in use and multiple free codes came about, it was read and used by many scientists and apprentices. Nowadays, there are dozens of much better books that are much easier to read and understand. Yet I still encounter this text being used. Why? Because many academics fought thru it, are proud of the feat, and somehow intend their trainees to do the same.

I read this book after reading thru over a dozen other books in the same subject, and found this to be the hardest and least understandable. This book is often considered the Bible of electronic structure simulations. This is a correct statement in the worst sense possible because the number of people who understand the Bible is much less than those who swear by it; i.e. very similar to this book. Overall, I do not recommend buying it or reading it. Its only redeeming quality is the exhaustive number of equations.

If you are studying the solid state physics, it is a necessary book for you. It covers various properties of almost all kinds of solid state materials and shows pretty new experimental data from reliable sources. This book also starts with a clear introduction in each chapter so that even for a beginner, it is easy to read. This book will be a good reference book for you to find out the definition of terminologies in this field. Personally, I use this book as a referece frequently.

This book is definitely not a book you can read through quickly but a book where you find out information through your life.

If you are a scientist and interested in solid state physics like semiconductor or metal, this is also a good book to get a good guide and introduction.

The information contained in the book allows first principle calculations of properties of important technological materials like perovskite oxides, semiconductors, etc. I would suggest the reader to consult the papers by R. Haydock and others in Solid State Physics, vol.35 of 1980 to
complemment the methods presented in the book.

Groundwork Training For Your HorseI love this book! I first saw the book in the public library, but was so impressed that I decided to get it for my personal library. It provides simple groundwork ideas from many different trainers. All the trainers have the same basic philosophies in common. They all use gentle, behavioral methods. It is nice to see the best methods by the best trainers put together in one book. You can pick and choose which exercises will work the best with your horse.

It is a nice book, but not what I expected. This book covers mostly the ideas behind some of the prominent "Natural Horsemanship" methods and gives a few basic exercises you can do with your horse (which was pretty much the same one/idea just different method). But then that was it. The book never expanded on what else you can do besides get your horse to go in a circle in a round pen, or walk over/around some poles.

If you want a book to explain the different "natural horsemanship" methods so you can decide which trainer(s) you would like to further learn from - this book will help you. If you are looking for a book which will give you exercises that you can do to get your horse thinking and moving with you, this book falls short.

Lot's of good information and great pictures. It lists the ideas of several trainers so you can try various methods and see what works well for your horse. I carry it to the barn all the time and try to do something everyday. So far I used some of the parelli stuff, join-up and TTEAM, all of which have been helpful in its own way.
