Indispensable Literary and Cinematic Bond Compendium Review Date: 2007-01-31
a book for the James Bond fan, written by a James Bond fanReview Date: 1999-07-05
THE essential reference work on James Bond. Period.Review Date: 2002-09-30
Excellent analysis of the James Bond phenomenon.Review Date: 2002-03-11
Nonetheless, this is overall, an informative work. Benson provides a chapter on Ian Fleming's background. Of particular note is a chapter in which Benson pieces together the biography of the James Bond character. This is reminiscent of John Pearson's Unauthorized Biography of James Bond. Benson provides an excellent analysis of the James Bond novels. He identifies trends in Ian Fleming's writing nad points to specific examples of what he calls the "Fleming Effect." For hard core fans of the novels this section is excellent. Benson includes analysis of the works of Ian FLeming, Kingsley Amis, and John Gardner. Curiously, many of the apparent criticisms that Benson had of Gardner's work, he is guilty of committing in his own novels. The film analysis is also excellent. Benson provides detailed analysis of every film through the Living Daylights.
It should be noted that this book will probably not be of much appeal to the casual James Bond fan. Benson tries to provide an in depth analysis rather than focusing on the superficial. Of distraction to the hard core fan, are occasional factual errors that appear to be the result of sloppy editing. Additionally, the quality of the text and photos is generally poor. The formatting of the text is somewhat erratic with occasional omissions of glaringly obvious punctuation. The photos are all black & white. The photos are generally blurred. This appear to be the result of poor printing.
Overall, the quality of the author's analysis is generally educational and informative. However, the production of the actual book borders on shoddy. An excellent reference work for the hardcore fan, but if you're looking for color photos of Bond girls and gadgets, then you should look elsewhere.

I didn't know if it was real or not!Review Date: 2002-10-13
I was amazed. I wasn't sure if Bond was real or not, the plot was completely believeble. When I finished it I still wasn't sure then I found that it was a fictional work. Apart from being slightly gutted, I was impressed.
This book is based on the Ian Flemming books not the films but this should not rule out anyone.
It tells both about the "real" James Bond's early and working life and has many short stories that are not in any of the Flemming books.
It doen't rewrite the books but adds and expands on the before and after the stories.

Debunking Bond in the name of realityReview Date: 2005-04-15
As a fan of Fleming, I saw all this as too much and not very true to the people in the books.
At 17, Bond kills his lover and tries to kill himself because, on the basis of old pictures and bad information he was given, he was told she was a spy. His reaction years later: to feel bad for the Service! The were in a jam needing to find a spy, after all. And if they gave him a set of misleading pictures, this is only part of the great Game. Oh and then an friend hires Bond - in his stints between WWII and his 00 - and later tries to have him killed because he thinks Bond and his wife are cheating. Bond does nothing to get back at him, and only quits his job. Any one who has read Thunderball and Bond with Count Lipi, will know that this is not the way James Bond works
So good, almost real.Review Date: 2002-08-01

A Prophet Operating at a LossReview Date: 2002-09-30
He wrote a good book that runs the gambit of his experiences.
Mania or depression are hollow words that bounce off my heart and simply encourage my love for him.
I see a man wrapped-up in his work, as a Coin Dealer and a Writer. I see a man who likes to sleep too much, an drive too slow one day, and too fast the next. I see the man I love.
I see a different man than the one I married in 1985, and I see a book that captured his spirit!

Reviewing a memoir about a manic/depressive's story is a challenge. Be forewarned this book is one helluva fast-forward ride!
I guarantee during the time it takes you to read A PROPHET OPERATING AT A LOSS, you will not see your life in the same way, & perhaps, never the same way again!
For the most part, Zane Bond is coherent & articulate - until you think about what he has written & then you get a whiff of seething synapses & the taste of burnt brain cells.
Zane Bond has a way with words & has been considerate of his readers by keeping his paragraphs short, even though the leaps between them sometimes seem like black holes. His chapters range through a forest of memories, philosophies & insights.
While I occasionally became lost or overcome, A PROPHET OPERATING AT A LOSS is a remarkable effort that will leave you breathless & thinking! What more do you want from a book?

Desire fuels the fire...Review Date: 2003-04-20
Bobby's translation of what it takes to move from leading a race into the winner's circle to leading in business is an analogy well made in this book, particularly for all racing fans who find themselves wanting to gain a winning edge in life.
Paul Pease parlays Bobby Unser's winning focus in driving to be first for the checkered flag into a shared vision for his readers of what it takes to succeed in business. Bobby's lessons learned on the track and in between race days made him a part of one of America's most winning race families in a sport that has literally killed many who took on its challenges.
Bobby's experience in the business of racing and in the business of business in his twenty years of retirement, make him an excellent teacher of valuable lessons for the lay reader. The examples of lessons learned from his years of racing provide an entertaining and enlightening background for the reader to gain perspective on each message Bobby has to offer.
Bobby is clearly a monumental character both on the track and off. Being a willing teacher of what it takes to make a difference in business as in life makes this book very satisfying to the finish.

Great book on winning in business and life (and racing)!Review Date: 2003-07-13
The advice given, although not earth-shattering, is both true and effective. For example, he talks about the desire to succeed and how this is a necessary "fuel" for winning. Many other self-development authors speak about this much as well. It is not anything new. However, He gives vivid examples from his racing career and from other anecdotes of friends and acquaintances. These examples are well-chosen because they are inspiring.
This is similar to other sections of his book. Bobby Unser seems to be very principle oriented as well as a man of integrity. He talk about instances where he could have turned his back on a commitment for monetary gain or to get on a better racing team (he made it seem like it was a somewhat common occurance in auto racing), but he stayed true to his commitment and it ended benefiting him in the end. This is refreshing considering some of the stereotypes of big business today where the search for a dollar seems to be the guiding principle sometimes.
I highly recommend this book. Even though it has a lot of auto racing stories, Unser tells them in a way that non-fans would really enjoy them and get motivation from their example.

The ride to rescue young girls from slaveryReview Date: 2008-03-20
This is another of the stories in the series, and hard to put down once started.
Matt and Sam Two Wolves discover that a slaver is working with renegade Indians to raid small towns and isolated farms and ranches, killing adults and spiriting away young girls.
The girls will be sold to the captain of a cargo ship turned slave vessel, who will transport the girls to various countries where young American girls will bring large sums of money.
They initially encounter Dick Wellman, an old mountain man, and his companion, Laurie, who is seeking her brother somewhere in the West. Dick is trying to find his granddaughter, Jenny, who has been taken by the Indians and presumably sold to Lake.
They track the children to a fortress in Mexico, and with liberal use of dynamite free Jenny and the other young girls.
Then ensues a series of encounters with the criminals and their Indian partners, during which Dick is killed. He had willed his ranch to Laurie and Jenny, and in the end Matt and Sam ride away leaving Laurie sad to lose him.
This is a must-read for anyone who loves Western fiction.

Conversational MemoirsReview Date: 2005-11-28
The book is written conversationally, so it is not scholarly but it is easy to read. It is detailed enough for those with no knowledge about early Hollywood could understand it. However, this makes it so those who do know a lot about it feel a little bored. Bond jumps around a bit chronologically but always finds his way back to where he began.
Bond does a good job of using expert sources to back up his information, especially Leonard Maltin and Richard W. Bann's book about The Little Rascals, but he does not use a bibliography. He does, however, include a filmography of his own appearances in the back of the book.
This book is interesting to Our Gang fans but it is not entirely devoted to information about the series. The beginning deals with it, a little later on talks about it, and the end chapter called Memory Lane talks about the Sons of the Desert reunions and such. The rest is about Bond's life and experiences.

Life Doesn't End When Your Contract's UpReview Date: 2000-10-14
First of all, I think the Little Rascals walk on water. Hundreds of years from now, some extraterrestial on the Moons of Jupiter with all z's and x's in his (its?) name will enjoy these short films as much as I did when I was growing up. They are universal in their appeal. We still haven't got to the point in our society that a Stymie, a Farina, or a Buckwheat can live next door to a Spanky, an Alfalfa, or a Butch. Hal Roach's Little Rascals were way ahead of their time.
Of course, we all know what happened. MGM bought Our Gang from Roach and trashed the whole concept. It was time to move on and -- like so many child stars -- turn to booze, drugs, or crime. But wait a minute! Butch escapes the cliche and turns to radio, film, and even TV. And he marries the Texas beauty queen and lives happily ever after. Bond has this talent for reinventing himself and going from one positive experience to the other.
Now who would have thought that the one member of the Little Rascals you should have grown up emulating was Butch the bully?
This is a book that is not only well written: It will make you feel good about life.

Systemic treatment for traumaReview Date: 2007-02-16

An Exceptional Resource for Experienced CliniciansReview Date: 2007-09-29
Trauma survivors frequently evince high levels of emotional pain, can be hostile and controlling in their attachment interactions, have difficulty trusting their partners, and have high needs for reassurance and emotional security. It is not uncommon for trauma survivors to have histories of early attachment disorganization that, even in adulthood, result in high levels of emotional reactivity, suspicion, hostile attribution, revivification of early traumatic experience, affect dysregulation, deficits in metacognition, and low stress tolerance. These characteristics seriously hinder the formation of secure attachment bonds in adult romantic relationships and present a therapeutic mine field for both the couple and therapist.
Johnson clarifies the underlying issues inherent in the couple dynamics of trauma survivors and describes how she models affective attunement, empathic mirroring, and guides the couple into safe mutual emotional disclosure and responsiveness.
Other reviewers have criticized this book for its dry academic style and lack of accessiblity. Because of this there may be better volumes for those who seek to learn the fundamentals of couple therapy or for those who want to learn the basics of working with trauma survivors. However, for the experienced clinician Johnson provides a concise guide that pinpoints precise clinical leverage points and a theoretically coherent rationale for specific interventions.
Johnson's approach is theoretically and empirically grounded and is written with compassion, sensitivity, and clarity. It is the best resource I've found for this important treatment niche.

Best bonds book for novices Review Date: 2007-04-08
It covers all the major topics without patronizing the reader. My one complaint is about the physical construction of the book. It's not available in HB and the cover is quite flimsy and curls easily. In fact this seems to be characteristic of the "Getting Started" series. The publisher needs to improve the durability of the binding.

Getting Started in Bonds does a great job explaining the various types of bonds available: treasury, municipal, corporate, mortgage backed securities, etc. It will make you aware of the options you have available when searching for a good deal. It also puts you in a good mode for taking all factors into account such as the possible tax advantages of a particular bond, determining how much liquidity you want with your bonds, etc.
Overall, it's a good reference to have on hand. It also helps to read more than once, as there are many things to remember. However, I am surprised at the amount of useful information crammed into this small easy-to-read book. Investors, as well as business students, will find this book Getting Started in Bonds an excellent investment.

After reading through this, though, I think it is also worth noting that it is not particularly well written. So far as I can tell, the facts are accurate; however, it is written in a very elementary style (basic grammar, awkward sentence structure, high in jargon, low in descriptors, etc). This could be good or bad, depending on how you look at it.
Just thought I'd mention it.
