While I am a many time author and know it's proven that the "101..." titles sell, I usually shy away from them. But thanks to the reviews on Amazon I bought this book. As reviewers wrote, this book is excellent.
It's the "Dog Tricks" part that suggested it isn't a serious dog training book; but serious it is. Yes, some of these could be called "tricks", but all of the basics that are so necessary to teach one's dog to get along in the human world are there: sit, down, stay, come, etc.
The way the book is laid out with two pages for each exercise and the clear writing and backup information makes it super easy for a complete novice to understand and teach themselves and then their dog these exercises.
Dogs love to please us and doing these positive training exercises truly works. Do him or her a favor and stick to a daily training plan.

This book has been great!! I am on my 2nd copy, as I gave the first one away to a friend who fell in love with it, and am planning on buying a 3rd copy to send to another friend.

This book is very easy to follow and a pleasure to page through. The photo's are fun, and make it a good pick for kids, who might not enjoy reading directions, as you can pretty much just follow the pictures. It includes hand signals and verbal cues, a lists of previous tricks to be mastered, and skill level. Whenever I run into a problem I go to the 'trouble shooting' section in the margin next to each trick, and it always has anticipated the snag and offers a helpful solution.

So far my chihuahua can sit, lay down, beg, shake hands, twirl, and roll over!! Not bad for a breed known for being yappy and being carted around like Cleopatra in handbags! I have had the book for about 5 months. We work all the tricks every night after her dinner. It's her 'school' and she loves it! I think she has become more confident since we started training. I know she feels very proud of herself when she does it right.

I highly recommend this book.

This book teaches that the self any of us doubts, feels ashamed of or guilty about is not who we really are, but a fear-driven phantasm - and the destruction that self doubt causes may leave one feeling hopeless. Bonds That Make us Free helps in overriding discouragement. Falsely created images about ourselves can be overriden by truth. Very helpful in discovering who we really are.

Reading some of the other reviews I think some of the readers misinterpreted of misunderstood the purpose of this book. So let me break it down. You are not to blame if you are being abused. This book does not encourage you to take abuse and/or turn the other cheek. It is intended for readers to take a look at their life and simply ask the question "are they really to blame?". Of course you shouldn't put up with abuse. The idea here is to look at smaller things in you life that make you angry, or are upsetting.

An example would be road rage. Of course you didn't deserve to get cut-off in traffic, but I am willing to bet that you wouldn't have noticed this if you weren't in a hurry to get somewhere. Your anger of road rage stemmed from the fact that you let yourself run late. The person that cut you off was an obstacle in YOUR egotistical reality. If you weren't in a rush, this person would be viewed as just another father or mother rushing to get home to their family.

Basically, his message is, "You have to be nice and polite to everyone else, but anyone can hurt you however they want, and if you don't let them, you're only hurting yourself." Why would I want to associate with anyone who has a mindset like that?

Don't buy this book. It's not worth your time or money, and the author doesn't deserve it.

Pictures are Worth Thousands of Words

If a picture is worth, as is said, a thousand words, The Wall Street Journal Guide to Money and Investing is worth many times its purchase price.

The book takes a very basic approach at explaining the components of the investment world. Taken together, the components explained represent a comprehensive view of what is a very complex and broad topic.

One reading doesn't do this book justice, though. Read over and over, however, this book will earn a place on any serious investment student's bookshelf as a resource to return to for a periodic refresher or for clarification.

Bumped to the side by The Wall Street Journal in favor of Dave Kansas' The Wall Street Journal Complete Money and Investment Guidebook, Kenneth & Virginia Morris' book lives on as The Standard and Poors Guide to Money and Investing. Where Dave Kansas' book is complete and chock full of words, the Morris' still succeed at conveying the basics in a way that will forever add value.

As many have said in their reviews, this is a great starting point for those new to investing and financial markets. In fact, it's the best I've ever found and I've looked a lot. The simple, plain English explanations are what makes this book stand out. For the nuances and more detailed information regarding the topics in the book, look to a textbook from a college finance class. But for the person who knows very little, start with this.

BOTTOM LINE:

Cannot recall in recent memory an author and illustrator that made such hilarious children's books! Numeroff's characters breathe life into a normal child's day a'la 'Cat in the hat' - causing situations that range from silly to sometimes bordering on the bizarre! The results are always hilarious and always come full circle. Overall, these books are fun to read, fun to look at, and just pure, magical whimsy.
Love that.

If You Give a Moose a Muffin is a childrens story recommended for ages 5-7
Like the classic If You give a Mouse a Cookie, it starts out with a little boy giving a muffin to a moose who just happens to be right outside his house, and then the moose asks for more and more stuff, such as blackberry jam, socks, sweaters, and one or two more muffins. All persons over the age of 7 probably will NOT find this read particularly enjoyable unless reading to a younger child.

Detailing the Game of Kings

Review Date: 2008-06-10
This book was excellent in detailing the development of the ancient game of chess. It begins with ancient Persian roots as a Islamic game which traveled throughout the known world influencing kings and countries. The book is more than a history lesson, it is a lesson into the dynamic effect of chess on culture, science, and human reasoning. The history is told through interesting anecdotes. Throughout the book, the author details the moves of the "immortal game." This is one of the most famous games in history. It was a 1800's century battle of tactics. It was the romantic style of chess perfected. The book details the four historic periods of chess and the style of play in each. Also, the book quickly highlights some of the movement changing players throughout history. This book was an excellent read for those who love this "game of kings."

This review is given of a book I havn't finished. Hoever I have gone a long way through and like what I have found.
This is the book I always thought, "interesting but I have a lot to read." I was also disappointed because I thought from the review on the jacket that it was about chess in general instead of the famous game.
Well, as I found when I got it on my Kindle it was both. It traces the history of Chess through the ages. It also gives an in-depth study of the famous Immortal Game(a notable game played between two masters in a London Gentleman's Club), with illustrations and analysis of every move, which is great as I simply don't have the gift of making a mind picture out of notation. The book is written in an engaging style and gives charming anecdotes. It is not written in a the style of a typical chess manuel but in a way an average reader can comprehend and enjoy.
The book is slightly flawed as regards general history. The distinction between the Middle Ages and the Renaisance was exagerrated. And Islam did not come anywhere near eliminating tribal feuding from Islamic countries except for a brief time. And the amount of Ancient knowledge that was transmuted via Islam, as opposed to Byzantium is also exaggerated(a better way to look at it is that increased contact between Northern Europe and the Meditteranean rim as a whole brought advances in Northern lands). Those however are minor points. And are matters of historical disputation anyway. All that is irrelevant. What the book gives, a rich tapestry of the lore of the Game of Kings is what makes the book worth reading.
The book, on the whole is just what I wanted. A history of chess and chess folklore written in a charming manner. I love the type of book that traces the history and legends surrounding some particular commodity or item and have been wanting something about chess for a long time. In short this book was a great windfall.

I met the author briefly recently (he lives not far from my apartment in Brooklyn), and he gave me a copy of this book. I have to admit that I hadn't played chess in years until I started reading The Immortal Game. I really appreciated David's mix of personal anecdotes (his grandmother's grandfather, Samuel Rosenthal, was one of the greatest players of the late 19th century), history, and technical commentary. His move-by-move rendition of the famous "immortal game" that gives the title to the book is anything but boring, and it ain't easy to make the recounting of a chess game a page turner! You definitely don't need to be an aficionado to appreciate this book, or the game itself.

It's more than just a game...

An easy and enticing read on the roots, history, and impact of chess throughout the centuries. It is not a strategy guide, nor will it teach you any opening or closing strategies, but it will, more likely than not, make you want to pick up the board and play a few games. As an amateur player, I found David Shenk's writing refreshing and enticing - chess is well known for being a very hard game to get good at. Being an active practitioner of the 'Romantic' school (very little directed strategy, and focus on the element of surprise, cleverness, and well, fun), I now have a perspective on the evolution of the game, its impact, and a newfound enthusiasm for learning more about it. Great read.

I've been buying a lot of chess books recently, and this one is so good I bought some extras to give away to my correspondence chess opponents. It gives a general history of the game (not too detailed or tedious, as some readers might find HJR Murray's more detailed work, for instance) that is quite informative. Overlayed on this history is the story of one particular game between two chess champions, each with a drastically different style of play. This game, which is known among chess enthusiasts as "The Immortal Game" is a fascinating story in itself which dovetails nicely with the more general history. If you don't know how to play chess, the actual game description will certainly be less enjoyable, but the book is a great read nonetheless. Highly recommended!

I completely enjoy Mosley's books, and this one is definitely at the top of his. He gets to the heart of his characters, and every time proves that there is a human condition that is beyond races. The "guts & soul" of a person & their walk in this life makes for the very best of reading. These two brothers are as rich & deep in emotion & heart as you'll find. And what these brothers learn from each other is indeed a great lesson for us all. My sincere thanks to Mr. M for a wonderful book!

Fortunate Son: A Novel
For many years I have enjoyed Mosley's mysteries, so when I saw this book I was curious. I had been looking for a book by a contemporary writer for my English classes and this story seemed promising. When I bagan reading I could not put it down. The writing is so good and the characters so interesting and moving. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

From where does Mosley's knowledge come?

It was clear to me that Mosley's insight into Tommy's character was much greater than his grasp of Eric's. I am curious as to how Mosley determined to portray Ahn's and Tommy's "innocence" throughout their trials ... so accurately capturing the survivor's blindness to the horror that is happening to them at that moment ... the mini-conversations with those present and not present, whether through the dead or through nature. The light that "hurts"? Did Mosley speak to someone or know someone with Asperger's syndrome, for instance, I wonder? Eric and Raela seem afflicted.

The complexity he displays through Tommy rings very true for me, while Eric's life seemed flatter ... by design? A reflection of reality or an absence of true knowledge on the part of the author? It made me wonder, hard, about similar disparities in texture that I THINK I see, too, in American life around me.

I enjoyed this book, reading it in one sitting.

Like Easy More.

I love Walter Mosley. I think he's a gifted and brilliant writer. But for those coming to him for the first time, this wouldn't be the book I'd recommend.I remember reading early publisher reviews of this book and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. This modern day fable takes two boys: a charmed perfect blonde Adonis, and his African American 'brother' whose luck runs from bad to worse. Yet together their karma creates a perfect Ying and Yang that harmonizes both their lives. It's beautifully written, with Mosley writing the kind of searing and insightful passages I'm sure many writers can only aspire to. That said, for some reason I was left cold by the end, which is ironic because everything leading up to it said I should've been completely invested. If you've never read him before, I'd suggest cracking open the first Easy Rawlings mystery, 'Devil In A Blue Dress' which in my mind redefines the mystery genre.

Did I read the same book as everyone else????

Awful, dreadful book. Characters are one dimensional and stereotyped. The plot is simplistic and formulaic. My first review on Amazon because, like the other reader who gave this book one star, I wanted to spare anyone the agony of reading this novel. After a summer spent reading really fine works like Water for Elephants, Eat Love Pray, A History of Love, The Road and more, this novel leaves me scratching my head and wondering where are the emperor's clothes?

If You Take a Mouse to the Movies, then what happens? Your child will have fun finding how one thing leads to another. This book provides endless entertainment for all.

Reasoning: The first reason that someone should buy this book is it shows how to care and be responsible for pets. More then 50% of American families own pets but not many of them know how to treat them so many of them end up dieing. The next reason some one should buy this book is that cheery attitude of this book can help kids out with their problems and make them feel better. The next reason is that the many people can get good advice from this book and the pictures are easy to understand making this book fun for kid's worldwide.

This book's unexpected sequences of this book are loveable. The responsibility it takes to raise a pet is accurate. The cheerful pictures and vocabulary building is excellent for your child to excel socially and academically. This book is a must have!

Great book for reading time together!

BOTTLED IN BOND--A COMPENDIUM OF GOLDEN GURU ADVICE
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-29
Overall, an excellent cd packed with good solid advice--motivational and concrete practical. BUT the David Hedison intro was a complete waste of time, and had me yelling "Hellllp Meeeee..."
The marketing technique of taking much of the standard golden guru wisdom and spray painting James Bond's image over it, is quite clever. There's not a lot of new stuff here, but all the classic self-help advice is convenient to have in one package.
However, if you are going to call this a James Bond Lifestyle, and give advice of don't drink, don't smoke, don't speed--maybe you are talking the James Bond at his real present age--somewhere in his 90s.
There was a lot more that could have been put in the cds--more specific websites for the kind of stuff that the author recommends you get. Also, there are intelligence related organizations that wannabes can join to rub up their spy image. (I could tell you which ones, but then I'd have to kill you).
Bond, would have been in reality, an intelligence disaster, if he were a case officer. Much too showy, too noticeable. He would be more of the paramilitary type dressed in a tux.
As far as the secret to getting women--watch the films--Bond was charming, but exuded a polite indifference to many of the women--and women HATE indifference--until they are intrigued by it.(Check out Daniel Craig in the train to Montenegro dining car scene in Casino Royale with "the money.")
Spend all your cash on some lady, providing fun travel and entertainment? Sure--AFTER you've gotten to know her, and after you've gotten the sex out of the way, as one of my pals in Denmark used to say. There's plenty of cool stuff to do with the nubile newbies that doesn't cost all that much. (Fashion shows, gallery receptions, trade shows, wine tastings, etc.)
The tips on dressing--YES. Once on a cruise in the Bahamas, I was thinking I couldn't score with a fistful of pardons in a woman's penitentiary, when one night I slipped into a Tux and strutted around the casino, like I belonged there. Scored a home run in less than an hour, and discovered that not all women from Arkansas look like Hillary Clinton. "Fashion helps," as Peter Weller said in "Shadow Hours." (And I look a lot more like Telly Savalas as Blofeld, than I do James Bond). Wanna make your foreign travel even more interesting--contact the trade mission or commercial attache' of the country you want to visit, and get some business leads relevant to your gig before you travel. Not only will you likely get VIP treatment when in country visiting your contacts, you can possibly write off part of the trip on your tax return. Did that when I went to Singapore, and had a grand old time. Anyway, you will enjoy this tape, follow its directions (but caveat credit card spender) and you will benefit. Within 24 hours of listening to the CD, I'm getting results already. Take your gold sovreign and get this program, so Goldfinger won't point a laser beam at your "gun."

so i was already in the mode of a Double 0....buying this CD was all i needed to simply push myself forward into being a Double 0 ( no kills please )...in a way the CD purchase was like M promoting me into double 0 status..listening to it was like i am shifting gears upwards...

Every since i bought the CD set and listened to it, i have already noticed changes in myself. I hit the gym more than usual having lost 10 pounds so far, i have a new 007 watch, no not Omega but a Graham by British masters ( i think each agent should choose their own kind of watch ), i have a gold coin just for that good feeling....etc.

This review might seem juvenile to some readers but you must understand that success is not meant for everyone. You must be a person wanting to want it. badly enough i might add. This CD allowed me to see that and push myself forward into what i knew i always wanted.

I think we all need a little imagination in our lives, makes our days a little more adventurous...

Next year i will vacation at Paradise Island at the Ocean Club ( i already hv their number )...go do some diving, i am tryig to work harder and smarter at work to increase my salary base so i can "maybe" afford an aston martin...its a far fetch goal but not impossible, if anything its so worth the try .. plus other things.

So i hope you will too do something that will improve your life. Remember a lot of people will say you are silly or think you are silly but what YOU think of yourself is more important. i used to always listen to my friends and familly i might add....got me nowhere...so i woke up one day and said i am going to listen to ME....in a year i become the owner of some real estate ( on two continents ), swam with stingrays, started organizing my life together, turned everything into missions, got what i needed from Q branch and already found myself improving etc...

so please dont give up on yourself. You are the best thing that ever happened. And if you have the money to spare, then buy this CD set...its a great motivational tool and maybe the kickstart you need to get up from that couch and do something.

Welcome to double 0. See you in the field. Next year you will find me at the Ocean Club playing cards or drinking a martini, or on the beach..trust me you wont miss that double 0 look...if you do see me, say hello....i would love to meet another double 0.

best...F

This audiobook is not what you might expect. Of course I'm a Bond fan which brought my attention to this in the first place but, Mr. Kyriazi is not telling you to "be" James Bond it's about you, upgrading your lifestyle be it money, dress, girls, overall prosperity using several Bond movie references.
I've listened to it twice in a row on my way to and from work and have actually taken some suggestions I've learned in the "book" and applied to my everyday life.
If you are stuck in a rut and looking for some motivation to "get out" I would suggest getting a copy of this audio book.

I had the book, so I knew about the seriousness of the subject, by a guy that's obviously applied what he is preaching. However, this eight hour marathon of one good idea after another, really took me by surprise. The author's authoritative voice, with support of other actors, made going from one disc to the other a real trip, that seemed to cover every possible way to get ahead imaginable. From now on, I probably won't be satisfied with other self-help audio-books, if they only have one speaker, no effects, or music. This audio-book got me spoiled.

I was already using the ideas from the book, but seems like there's double the info, in the 8 CDs. Anyway, double the energy for sure. I like the way each disc is marked for each topic, and unlike the author figured, I didn't skip to the disc on Bond girls first. I listened from the beginning. I'm not a gambler, but his 'always win in the casino' made sense to me, anyway, fun to hear it. And I'll certainly use valet parking if I go to Vegas, after hearing the funny example of parking yourself with your Bond girl.

David Hedison's introduction surrounded by Bond music really kicks it off. I'm thinking he could do his own motivational book, especially for wannabe actors. But for wannabe Bond's, I guess, this would be the course needed. I give it two thumbs up.

I'd been fortunate enough to find the book and original cassette version of this program on amazon years ago. I listened to the tape so many times while driving that I wore it out. This 8 CD set has a lot more information than the original. You can tell Mr. Kyriazi has continued to learn and practice his techniques.

From the introduction by David Hedison (Felix Leiter in two of the James Bond movies) through the "Clearing the Subconscious Mind" session on the last CD, this set places a powerful set of tools in your hands. Tools you can use to improve your lifestyle.

Since I first listened to Mr. Kyriazi's program, I've upgraded my life signifcantly. I found my "Bond girl," got my first novel published, and drive a new Mustang GT. I don't know if any of these things would have happened if I hadn't discovered (and implemented) these well-thought out and explained techniques. Thanks, Paul!

I can't recommend this strongly enough to anyone who is interested in improving his lifestyle.

This book was a load of crap. It was nothing but a bunch of boring common knowledge. They name a subject then give you 1/4 of the info on it. And there was only a couple pics of the bond actors except for Pierce who there was a lot of pics of. I think the author is gay for Pierce. The book was written like someone watched the movies once and wrote down a few facts here and there. I love the bond films but I wouldn't pay a dollar for this book.

The book is fine, some of the reviewers aren't:

This book is done in typical DK style, a fabulous pictorial representation of the people and items associated with the James Bond series of films. If you want to know more about some of what you see on the screen, this is a good choice.

But I have a bone to pick with a couple of the reviewers on this page. First of all, Ray Walker (2/14/03) doesn't seem to realize that "Never Say Never Again" was NOT one of the "official" Bond films; the reason it resembles "Thunderball" is that that was the only Bond script in the public domain, and thus the only one available to another producer. Although not a bad film (thanks in part to Sean Connery), most Bond purists do not include it when discussing the Bond series, and neither the author nor publisher should be blamed for excluding it from this book.

And the reviewer on 5/7/03 needs to realize that this book is not intended to be an in-depth study along the lines of "The Essential Bond", which is another excellent book. The reviewer should have taken into account that this is essentially a picture book, and should be purchased in addition to, and not in place of, the type of book he claims to prefer.

Excellent!!!!!

I've been a Bond fan since my Dad used to take me to the public library so I could take out the hardback versions of Fleming's master spy.

I honestly like this book, although it IS for a younger audience. The cutaway views of the "Bondmobiles" and "Little Nellie" are well rendered and make for a detailed insight behind the sheetmetal.

I would have liked to have seen a newer edition, featuring Brosnan's last film as 007...DIE ANOTHER DAY. I think the VANQUISH and the Jaguar would have only added to the fun aspect of this book.

It's definitely NOT a wordy book, but does offer the missions (films) in a nice concise chronological order, complete with places in these movies of note such as Dr. No's island base, Blofeld's oil rig, Stromberg's "Atlantis", etc.

All in all, a nice addition for ANY Bondian library...or even a good starter book for the "next generation" of 007 fans!

This book was really amazing. It has almost every little detail of every Bond movie from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough. Book also contains some spectacular large photos from the movies. For each section of the movies, it describes basically what it was about, and it gives some of the information about charcters, villains, settings, and the "gadgets" used in the movie. It also contains hand-drawn pictues of scenes and places from the movie. Labels are also on the pictures (pointing out what is what). Really amazing, and you might learn a thing or two as well which is nice. At the end of the book after it has discussed all of Bond's missions, it has info on the movies themselves like the cast and crew. Then there is the index. This is a MUST BUY for any true James Bond fanatic. It is a fun book to look at, and to this day, I look through it as well and it sparks many memories. If you are not too familar with Mr. Bond, then do not bother with this item. A tremendous book, definitly worth your hard earned money.
