Mr. Zoghaib's words are tangibly fluid, bursting with the pure essence of loves' presence. Collectively, the flow of words is like soft dew drops - it gently touches the external body and then resonates, with a warm, sensitive and loving glow, on the soul. Mr. Zoghaib is a King of Romance. His words enable the mind to gracefully drift; calling back a lost love, conjuring up a future love, or basking in the violet rain of an existing love.

Adaptations that would make Fleming proud

Octopussy, the short story by Ian Fleming is a great little story about James Bond paying a visit to a man who murdered one of his friends 20 years earlier and "taking care" of him. It's short, sweet, not too confusing and filled with Flemings trademark, quality writing. As a comic strip, which would normally focus on action, it should have been a disaster. This adaptation by James Lawrence and Yaroslav Horak is AMAZING.
They succeed by using the short story and embellishing it in ways that take nothing away from the original. They add a backstory that fleshes out the characters in great ways.
In the original story the murdered man was one of Bond's mentors, the man that taught him to ski among other things. In the comic version we meet his family and see that there was so much more to the man, and his relationship to 007. Action sequences are added where needed and true to Fleming's style, there are sexy moments.
As if that weren't enough, this volume also contains the story, THE HILDEBRAND RARITY, originally from the FOR YOUR EYES ONLY collection. Again, Lawrence and Horak take one of Fleming's thinner stories and flesh it out to a proper length and character. Again they succeed admirably.
These strips were published in the London Daily Telegraph between November of 1966 and December of 1967, but they feel as fresh today as they did 35 years ago. The stories and the art is timeless- both a tribute to Ian Fleming's work and that of Lawrence and Horak.

A Bit of Literary Nostalgia devoted to Ian Fleming's Creation
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-22
There are two books I find to be superior on the subject of examining Ian Fleming's James Bond novels and short stories. The first and definitive is "Ian Fleming's James Bond: Annotations and Chronologies for Ian Fleming's Bond Stories" by John Griswold. It is an objective research and analysis of the highest order of Ian Fleming's total literary output that he devoted to his fictional hero who operated and existed in a factual and reality based world shaped for his hero's existence. The second book is Kingsley Amis' THE JAMES BOND DOSSIER, which for me was the first serious look of why many people were so enamored by Ian Fleming's James Bond books. Kingsley Amis states in the Preface to his THE JAMES BOND DOSSIER that he too was an Ian Fleming fan and that his book was a result of "a modest article of about 5,000 words" that grew into the essay that became his book. It is a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining book subjectively examined in segregated elements of Fleming's books broken down into chapters by Amis. Written during the same era as O.F. Snelliing's 007 JAMES BOND: A REPORT, Kingsley Amis' book remains an endearing bit of literary nostalgia devoted to Ian Fleming's creation.

James Bond in the cinema

One of the first and still one of the best on Bond!

John Brosnan's "James Bond in the Cinema" was unique when it was first published in the early 1970's. It was to my knowledge the first truely ambitious look at whole Bond movie experience with a freshness and sense of fun. Unlike other critics of the day who seemed to be hung up on series latent sadism (also a potent mix in Ian Fleming's novels), Brosnan(no relation to Pierce) fully understood that walking into a Bond movie was like walking into an entirely different world. Once you get the "joke" so to speak these escapist yarns do work with varying degrees of wit and sophistication.

Indeed from 1962's "Dr. No" till 69's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" the Bond movies were groundbreaking in the same way "Star Wars" and "The Matrix" are to modern audiences. From the animated dots that opened amid John Barry's unmistakable brassy music, you saw art direction, editing techniques, special effects, fight scenes and sly eroticism unlike anything you've seen before. Brosnan captures all these elements vividly in practically scene by scene reviews but he is also a perceptive critic. Quite rightly he realizes the series may have peeked with the near perfect slickness of "Goldfinger" thus turning the series into a perpetual state of trying to recapture that movie's "genie in the bottle" over and over again.

Updated in 1981 to include part of the Roger Moore years (who he dubs "James Bland") the books are wonderfully illustrated with great production stills and both offer an appendix chock full of other Bondian material of special interest. Buy both volumes if you can find them as they are collectable in every sense of the word.
